I am an Associate Professor of Contemporary Political Analysis at the Graduate School of Law and Political Science, Tohoku University, one of Japan's leading national universities, and a Visiting Researcher at the SmartNews Media Research Institute. I received my PhD (with the Dean's Award for Outstanding Doctoral Research) from the University of Tokyo in 2021.

My research sits at the intersection of political communication and Japanese politics, with two main lines of inquiry. The first concerns the role of news media in democratic politics — particularly the declining influence of regional newspapers, news deserts, media bias, and the changing landscape of news consumption. I draw on original large-scale datasets of Japanese regional and national newspapers, combining quantitative text analysis with electoral behavior research. The second examines voting behavior and voter attitudes, including issue voting and the design and effects of Voting Advice Applications (VAAs). I have been involved in large-scale original surveys of both voters and politicians, including the University of Tokyo–Asahi Shimbun Joint Survey (UTAS).

My monograph Newspapers and Politics in Contemporary Japan: Regional and National Papers, Voters, and Politicians (University of Tokyo Press, 2023) provides a comprehensive empirical analysis of how newspapers shape voters and politicians in Japan. It received the 10th Uchikawa Yoshimi Memorial Media Studies Award (2025), the Japan Public Policy Studies Association Encouragement Award (2024), and the Japan Electoral Studies Association Outstanding Paper Award (2022), and was reviewed in Social Science Japan Journal.

My peer-reviewed work has appeared in the International Journal of Press/Politics, Social Science Japan Journal, Politics & Gender, and the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties, among others. I have a paper conditionally accepted at Political Psychology, and I am a contributor to Japan Decides 2026 (Palgrave Macmillan), writing a chapter on mass media coverage of the 2026 Japanese general election. I am also scheduled to present at the APSA Annual Meeting in September 2026.

I am planning an overseas research visit from autumn 2027 through summer 2029 and am actively exploring host institutions.

Abstract Understanding the ideological positions of political parties is crucial for empirically testing various theories in political science. In Japan, some studies have assessed each party’s policy outlook through electoral platforms, candidate surveys, or expert surveys, with most studies focusing on the past thirty years. However, limited efforts have comprehensively and longitudinally quantified the conflicts between political parties. Although previous studies have used election-related data to reveal interparty conflicts during elections, interparty conflicts between elections remain unclear. This study determines the stance of Japanese political parties during parliamentary debates. We collected text data from committee speeches from the Diet Proceedings Database from 1959 to 2019 and conducted a quantitative text analysis. By applying the Wordshoal method, we first estimated political party positions on specific policy topics in the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors. Then, we aggregated these policy-specific positions yearly via dynamic factor analysis. Consequently, we succeeded in discerning the axis of conflict in Japanese parliamentary debates and evaluated the longitudinal one-dimensional ideal points for political parties. Additionally, we visualized the changes in each party’s ideological position, identified controversial topics, and explored how these topics changed over time, providing new insights into the study of Japanese politics.

Abstract Electoral gender quotas remain contentious among many publics. One hurdle is the “principle-policy puzzle”: those who espouse gender egalitarianism may nevertheless oppose affirmative action measures because of disagreements about their necessity and worries about government overreach. Based on an original survey in Japan, where women’s underrepresentation is particularly pronounced, we identify two dimensions that drive attitudes toward quotas. First, modern sexism matters: those who attribute underrepresentation to women’s disinterest or who think that quotas will increase the number of unqualified women candidates are less likely to support quotas. Second, appropriateness matters: those who oppose government intervention in gender affairs are less likely to support quotas. Crucially, these differences hold even among those who desire more women in parliament. Our results suggest that public acceptance of quotas depends more on correcting misperceptions about structural gender barriers and the benign consequences of quotas (“policy”), rather than encouraging people to prefer more women in parliament (“principle”).

2023年度は前年度にCrowd Worksを通じて取得したWeb調査データを分析し、その結果を9月に開催された日本社会心理学会で報告した。ここで報告した主な知見としては、「培養理論研究の知見とは異なり、ミーンワールド症候群的な認知・価値観とテレビ視聴は正の関連を持っておらず、「暴言」とは負の関連を持つ」「・インターネット利用については利用内容により結果が異なっており、SNS利用が「侵略」と正の関連を持つ一方で、ミーンワールド尺度とは負の関連を持っており、SNS・動画以外のインターネット利用が、「暴力」「侵略」と正の関連を持つ一方で、ミーンワールド尺度とは正の関連を持っていた」「異なる尺度に含まれる質問項目・因子のうち、庶民としての感覚を重視することと関連する項目が、いずれもテレビ視聴時間と正の関連を持っていた」といったものである。少なくとも現代の日本ではテレビがミーンワールド症候群をもたらすとは考えられない。一方で、インターネットサービスについての知見からみると、「暴力に満ちた」という世界観と「冷たい（他者を信頼できない）」という世界観は分けて考える必要があるといえる。また、自分達をエリートや富裕層と対置した庶民という存在として認識する世界観が、テレビ視聴によって培養される可能性が示唆された。上記の知見を踏まえた上で、2023年11月にLancersを通じて2回目のWeb調査を行い、メディア利用が関連し得る変数として、新たに正当世界信念をピックアップした。 2024年3月に、これらの2回の調査結果を元にしたWeb調査を行った。この調査はインテージ社のシングルソースパネルを利用したものであり、2024年2月中のメディアへの接触ログ（テレビ、PCモバイルによるインターネットサイト利用）と質問項目への回答（人々の価値観）を紐づけた分析が可能になっている。

本研究は、有権者に限らない様々な政治主体が政治情報を受容・発信する条件を整理し、インターネット時代に各主体（有権者同士または有権者と政治家）が円滑にコミュニケーションをとるための方策を提案することを目的として、政治学の立場から、現在の日本における政治的コミュニケーションの発受信両面にわたるルートを解きほぐし、それらのミクロ・マクロ双方の効果を世論調査とサーベイ実験を併用しながら推定するものである。研究期間１年目の2023年度においては、数次にわたる研究会を実施すると共に、各研究分担者による共同作業を通じて、主に以下の事項を実施した。第１に、2015年以降に日本語または英語で出版された政治コミュニケーション分野のレビュー論文、主要雑誌掲載論文、図書をリストアップし、そのうち学術的な検討を行うに値すると思われる210点に関して文献メモを作成した。第２に、文献メモを整理し、最終的な研究成果目標である図書刊行に向けたアウトラインの第一次案を作成した。これは、単なる先行研究のレビューにとどまらず、政治コミュニケーションの主要トピックスのうち、日本において未だに通説と呼びうる実証研究が得られておらず、本研究において挑戦すべきものを洗い出す作業でもあった。第３に、人々の政治コミュニケーション環境に関する調査、並びに接触した記事に対する評価または信頼度に対するニュースレーベルおよびコンテンツの影響に関する調査を実施した。

本研究の目的は、現代日本の有権者に関して、マスメディア不信の不均質性・形成過程・克服可能性を、インターネット利用との関連を軸に解明することであった。以下では、本年度中に得られた主な研究成果について記述する。まず、有権者のマスメディア認識の多様性の実態を解明するため、独自に実施したインターネット世論調査のデータを、混合分布モデルと呼ばれる統計手法を用いて分析する研究に取り組んだ。その結果、回答者のクラスターを抽出することに成功し、各メディアの左右イデオロギーに対する日本の有権者の認識には明確な不均質性が存在するほか、自身の政治的傾向とも関連していることが分かった。この分析結果は学会にて報告された。また、マスメディア報道が有権者の政治意識や投票行動に与えるポジティブな影響を分析すべく、オリジナリティの高いオンライン上のフィールド実験を、2021年衆院選に合わせて実施した。その結果、特に新聞社のボートマッチのページを閲覧した回答者は、衆院選の投票参加率が統計的有意に高まることや、政党と自身の政策面での近さの認識率が向上することが分かった。この分析結果は学会での報告に至っている。さらに、ポータルサイト上のニュース記事のコメント欄に関して、有権者がその政治的傾向をどのように認識するかや、自身の政治意識に影響を与える可能性を分析するために、大規模なサーベイ実験を実施した。分析の結果、コメント欄に表れる他のユーザーの意見は、回答者の多数派認知や争点態度に影響を与えることが分かった。これらの研究成果は、現代日本の有権者のメディア・バイアス認知を詳細に明らかにするとともに、メディアが政治意識や投票行動に与える影響を再発見する意義があると考えられる。今後は、分析結果の一貫性や妥当性の検討をさらに深め、現代社会における健全な政治コミュニケーションのあり方を考察するための知見を提供していきたい。
