    A pinacolborane (Bpin) group attached to dinaphtho[2,3- b :2′,3′- f ]thieno[3,2- b ]thiophene (DNTT) significantly reduced the ionization energy of the DNTT solid via reducing the vacuum level, leading to enhancing the carrier density by air-oxidation.

    Controlling the crystal structures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by regioselective methyl chalcogenolation is an effective strategy for realizing superior molecular semiconductors showing ultrahigh mobility, as exemplified by methylthiolated pyrene and peropyrene. Following the strategy, we designed and synthesized 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(methylthio)coronene (MT-coronene) and 1,4,7,10-tetramethoxycoronene (MO-coronene) as potential candidates for high-performance molecular semiconductors. Since the coronene core is highly symmetric, the regioselective functionalization at the 1, 4, 7, and 10-positions seemed to be challenging, and thus, we tested two strategies for constructing such regio-selectively functionalized coronene derivatives: one was the direct functionalization of the parent coronene via the iridium-catalyzed borylation reaction, and the other was the stepwise construction of the coronene core with functionalized naphthalene derivatives. Interestingly, the former was suitable for the synthesis of MT-coronene, whereas the latter was suitable for MO-coronene. The crystal structures of MT- and MO-coronene were significantly different from the γ-structure of their parent and were classified into the brickwork and the sandwich herringbone structure, respectively. In accordance with the brickwork crystal structures with isotropic but small intermolecular HOMO overlaps, the MT-coronene-based single-crystal field-effect transistors (SC-FETs) showed decent transistor responses with a carrier mobility of up to 0.5 cm2 V-1 s-1. On the other hand, the SC-FETs of MO-coronene, the solid-state electronic structure of which was zero-dimensional due to the sandwich herringbone structure, were far inferior to those of MT-coronene. Based on the crystal structures and theoretical calculations on MT- and MO-coronene, we analyzed the tendency of the intermolecular interactions and intermolecular HOMO overlaps in the solid state, which explains the performances of the coronene system as molecular semiconductors. Furthermore, we compared the solid-state structures of a series of methylthiolated PAHs, pyrene, perylene, peropyrene, and coronene, to determine the differences in their performances as molecular semiconductors, which gave us new insights into the relationship between the molecular structure, packing, and electronic structure in the solid state, providing perspectives for superior molecular semiconductors.

    A series of dicyanomethylene-substituted thieno[3,2-b]- and thieno[2,3-b]-thiophenes and their α-halogenated derivatives (CNTTs) were developed as electron-withdrawing terminal units of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) for bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics (OPVs). The series of CNTTs was combined with a [1,2,5]thiadiazolo[3,4-e]thieno[2'',3'':4',5']thieno[2',3':4,5]pyrrolo[3,2-g]thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indole (BTP) unit, the electron-donating core of Y6, a representative NFA, to afford a series of NFAs (BTP-CNTTs). The BTP-CNTTs, particularly the ones with α-chlorinated or brominated CNTT units, exhibit longer absorption wavelengths than that of Y6 and have low-lying LUMO energy levels comparable to that of Y6. Bulk heterojunction OPV devices based on the BTP-CNTTs blended with a representative donor polymer, PBDB-T, exhibited power conversion efficiencies of over 10% under AM1.5 irradiation. These results suggest that the CNTTs are good candidates as electron acceptor building units for NFAs or n-type organic semiconductors.

  4. Isoelectronic Substitution of a High‐performance Organic Semiconductor with Selenium Atoms: Synthesis and Characterization of Methylthiolated Dibenzo[cd,gh][2,5]diselenapentalene 査読有り

    Abstract A selenium variant of one of the best molecular semiconductors, 1,3,6,8‐tetrakis(methylthio)pyrene (MT‐pyrene), namely 1,3,5,7‐tetrakis(methylthio)dibenzo[cd,gh][2,5]diselenapentalene (1), was designed, synthesized, and fully characterized through single‐crystal X‐ray analysis and single‐crystal field‐effect transistors. Although the crystal structure of 1 was a brickwork‐related structure similar to that of MT‐pyrene, the transport properties of 1 were far inferior to that of MT‐pyrene. This is attributed to subtle differences in the crystal structure, where the large displacement along the molecular short‐axis direction diminishes the efficient two‐dimensional overlap of HOMO. Since such displacement can be caused by steric congestion of three chalcogen atoms at both sides of 1, two from the methylthio group and one from the core, we also synthesized 1,5‐bis(methylthio)dibenzo[cd,gh][2,5]diselenapentalene (2). However, 2 gave a less intermolecularly interactive crystal structure or one‐dimensional anisotropic structure, which were also not promising as molecular semiconductors, judging from the calculated electronic structures in the solid state. As the selenium‐containing core, dibenzo[cd,gh][2,5]diselenapentalene, has an isoelectronic molecular structure with pyrene and a smaller reorganization energy than pyrene, it is expected to be a promising π‐conjugated structure as organic semiconductors. However, methylthiolation was concluded not to be a suitable molecular‐design strategy to bring out the potential of the core.

    Rational design, synthesis, and characterization of a new efficient versatile n-type dopant with a closed-shell electronic structure are described. By employing the tetraphenyl-dipyranylidene (DP0) framework with two 7π-electron systems modified with N,N-dimethylamino groups as the strong electron-donating substituent, 2,2',6,6'-tetrakis[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-4,4'-dipyranylidene (DP7), a closed-shell molecule with an extremely high-lying energy level of the highest occupied molecular orbital, close to 4.0 eV below the vacuum level, is successfully developed. Thanks to its thermal stability, DP7 is applicable to vacuum deposition, which allows utilization of DP7 in bulk doping for the development of n-type organic thermoelectric materials and contact doping for reducing contact resistance in n-type organic field-effect transistors. As vacuum-deposition processable n-type dopants are very limited, DP7 stands out as a useful n-type dopant, particularly for the latter purpose.

    ConspectusThe crystal structure of organic semiconductors has been regarded as one of the crucial factors for realizing high-performance electronic devices, such as organic field-effect transistors. However, although the control of crystal structures of organic semiconductors has been examined in the last two decades of intensive efforts of the development of organic semiconductors, active measures to control crystal structures enabling high carrier mobility are still limited. In 2016, our research group noticed that regioselective methylthiolation could provide a selective crystal structure change from an ordinary herringbone structure to a pitched π-stacking structure, similar to the crystal structure of rubrene, in the benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) system. Following this serendipitous finding, our group systematically investigated the relationship between the molecular and crystal structures of a range of methylthiolated aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds.This Account provides a comprehensive overview of our research efforts and advancements in the development of methylthiolated small-molecule-based organic semiconductors (molecular semiconductors). We first describe the outline of the past development of molecular semiconductors, focusing on the types of crystal structures of high-performance molecular semiconductors. Then, we describe our findings on the drastic crystal structure change in the BDT system upon methylthiolation, detailing the causes of the change in terms of the intermolecular contacts and intermolecular interaction energies. This is followed by the confirmation of the generality of the crystal-structure change by methylthiolation of a series of acene and heteroacenes, where the herringbone structure in the parent system is unexceptionally transformed into the pitched π-stacking structure, a promising crystal structure for high-mobility molecular semiconductors well exemplified by the prototypical molecular semiconductor, rubrene. In fact, the methylthiolated anthradithiophene afforded comparable high mobility to rubrene in single-crystal field-effect transistors. Then, we demonstrate that the sandwich herringbone structures of peri-condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, including pyrene, perylene, and peropyrene, change into brickwork crystal structures upon methylthiolation and that, among these compounds, very promising molecular semiconductors, methylthiolated pyrene and peropyrene, showing ultrahigh mobility of 30 cm2 V s-1, are realized.Through the studies, by gaining insights into the underlying mechanisms driving the crystal structure changes, we lay a strong foundation for tackling challenges related to controlling the crystal structures and developing high-performance molecular semiconductors. This will be a distinct approach from the past activities in the development of molecular semiconductors that mainly focused on molecules themselves, including their synthesis, properties, and characterization. We thus anticipate that our findings and the present Account will open the door to a new era of the development of molecular semiconductors.

  24. Carbonyl-Terminated Quinoidal Oligothiophenes as p-Type Organic Semiconductors

    A series of quinoidal oligothiophenes terminated with carbonyl groups (nTDs, n = 2–4) are studied as p-type organic semiconductors for the active materials in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) both by the theoretical and experimental approaches. The theoretical calculations clearly show their high-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels (EHOMOs), small reorganization energies for hole transport (λholes), and large contribution of sulfur atoms to HOMOs, all of which are desirable for p-type organic semiconductors. Thus, we synthesized nTDs from the corresponding aromatic oligothiophene precursors and then evaluated their physicochemical properties and structural properties. These experimental evaluations of nTDs nicely proved the theoretical predictions, and the largest 4TDs in the series (4,4′′′-dihexyl- and 3′,4,4″,4′′′-tetrahexyl-5H,5′′′H-[2,2′:5′,2″:5″,2′′′-quaterthiophene]-5,5′′′-dione) can afford solution-processed OFETs showing unipolar p-type behaviors and hole mobility as high as 0.026 cm2 V−1 s−1.

    COVID-19の影響のため、今年度計画していたフランス・ボルドー大学での共同実験はすべて実施できなかったため、国内での材料合成とデバイス評価体制の構築に注力した。 具体的には、川畑が中心となり、可溶性アセンジチオフェンジオン系材料の開発を実施し、ベンゾジカルコゲノフェノジオン(フラン、チオフェン、およびセレノフェン)系に加え、ナフトジチオフェンジオン系について周辺ドナー部位を順次変化させることで、近赤外吸収領域を制御しつつ、新材料を得ることに成功している。これらの新規材料の半導体特性は電界効果トランジスタ構造により評価されており、近赤外吸収のみならず比較的良好なキャリア輸送特性を持つことを確認している。これに加え、薄膜における分子凝集様式を変化させることで吸収領域の制御を行うことにもチャレンジし、キノイド骨格中央部に適切にアルキル基を導入することで、J会合体様の凝集が実現でき、比較的小さな分子であるにもかかわらず1000nmを超える長波長吸収を実現できることが明らかにできた。更に単結晶構造解析により、アルキル基がどのように分子集合体構造に影響を及ぼすのかも明らかにできており、本分子設計における構造化学的な意義を見出すだけでなく、さらなる長波長吸収の実現に向けて極めて有用な手法であることも確認している。一方、ナフトチオフェンジイミド系においては、澤本を中心に効率的合成法の開発を検討し、市販のナフタレンジイミド誘導体から効率的なチオフェン環構築法とCH活性化を経るカップリング反応によりオリゴマー半導体を効率的に合成する手法を確立できている。 一方、太陽電池およびフォトディテクタ素子の作製・評価技術についてはフランス・ボルドー大チームと打ち合わせを進めており、特に太陽電池については新たに開発した近赤外吸収材料を用いて7%程度の光電変換効率が実現できることを確認している。

    近赤外光受光素子に利用可能な近赤外吸収有機半導体の開発を目的とし、アセンジカルコゲノフェンジオンと呼ばれる、縮環キノイド構造を基盤とするドナー-アクセプター-ドナー型の有機半導体の合成と評価を行った。合成した一連の有機半導体は中性閉殻分子であるにも関わらず、薄膜における吸収帯が1000 nmから1800 nmにも及ぶ近赤外吸収を示した。この薄膜を活性層とした有機電界効果トランジスタは大気中で安定な電荷輸送を示し、電荷移動度が最大で0.2 cm2/Vs程度の良好な半導体特性を示し、本縮環キノイド構造が近赤外吸収有機半導体における有望なビルディングユニットであることを明らかにした。
