    Applying vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy, we directly reveal hydrated-state supramolecular chirality in K+-responsive chiral supramolecular hydrogels. Combined VCD and induced circular dichroism measurements confirmed that K+-triggered self-assembly enables long-range chirality transfer from a chiral D- or L-alanine residue to an otherwise achiral supramolecular framework.

    X4-tetrabromo[2,3]thienylene (1, Br4-tetra[2,3]thienylene) and X4-tetraiodotetra[2,3]thienylene (2, I4-tetra[2,3]thienylene) were used to investigate the formation of various guest inclusion crystals through intermolecular halogen···halogen (X···X) interactions and the dynamics of guest molecules. 1 and 2 formed host-guest crystals with aromatic molecules such as benzene (Bz), toluene (Tol), anisole (An), and chlorobenzene (ClBz). X-ray crystal structure analysis revealed the formation of a channel structure where 1D chains formed by intermolecular X···X interactions were arranged in a grid pattern. Host lattices of 1 and 2 were capable of reversibly adsorbing and desorbing Tol molecules while maintaining crystallinity. Dielectric measurements showed dielectric relaxation due to molecular motion of polar guest molecules (Tol and ClBz) in the host lattice formed by molecule 2. In particular, crystals containing ClBz exhibited rotational dynamics of guest molecules with increasing temperature. These results provide important insights for the design of flexible porous materials using halogen···halogen interactions and the creation of dielectric materials based on guest molecule dynamics.

    The control of crystal structure and proton conductivity was evaluated by stepwise protonation of tetraphenylene molecules (ImTP) containing a imidazole group. By controlling the degree of protonation from neutral ImTP to H1ImTP⁺, H2ImTP2⁺, and H4ImTP⁴⁺, we demonstrated that the balance between intermolecular hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions affects structural stability and proton conductivity. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that neutral ImTP forms a 2D hydrogen bond network, while H1ImTP⁺ exhibits enhanced structural stability due to N─H⁺···Cl- electrostatic interactions. H2ImTP2⁺ forms a 3D network, and H4ImTP⁴⁺ becomes amorphous. Under 40% relative humidity conditions, these compounds adsorb H2O to form proton conduction pathways, exhibiting conductivities of 3.20 × 10- 7, 3.38 × 10- 6, 1.35 × 10- 6, and 6.20 × 10- 6 S cm- 1 at ∼363 K for n = 0, 1, 2, and 4 of HnImTPn⁺Cl- n system, respectively. In particular, H1ImTP⁺ exhibits an optimal balance between hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, resulting in high structural stability, reversible H2O adsorption, and proton conductivity.

    An intermediate state of the plastic crystal (PC) phase between solid and liquid has attracted much attention due to its potential applications for ionic conductors, ferroelectrics, and barocaloric materials. In general, it has been considered difficult to maintain a polarized orientation state in the PC phase due to the loss of orientational order caused by the isotropic rotation of molecules. In this study, we succeeded in realizing a unique polarized orientation state in the PC phase of sucinonitrile (SN), which exhibits hysteresis in the polarization-electric field (P-E) curve. In the PC phase, the trans and gauche conformations coexist, and the conformation and orientation of the molecules change in response to an external electric field. Interestingly, the polarization state in the PC phase relaxes upon removal of the electric field and does not exhibit the nonvolatile memory effects seen in conventional ferroelectrics. However, two different polarization mechanisms emerge due to the molecular orientational and conformational degrees of freedom. As a result, a characteristic double P-E hysteresis behavior with two different coercive fields, which is not observed in conventional ferroelectrics, is observed. This result provides an important guideline for the design of organic materials for the realization of next-generation multilevel memory.

    Abstract Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is a prototypical conducting polymer. When a polar solvent is used during film fabrication, the hole-doped PEDOT oligomers form crystalline clusters in the films, exhibiting high conductivity. However, whether hole carriers exhibit band transport has not been clarified yet. Here, we employ a multilayer spin-coating method using an aqueous solution with ethylene glycol, with additional procedures of dipping the films in ethylene glycol or dropping sulfuric acid onto the films, to achieve a high DC conductivity of ∼1000 S cm−1 or higher. Using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and far-infrared-to-ultraviolet reflection spectroscopy, we derive complex optical conductivity $$\widetilde{\sigma }$$ spectra, which are reproduced by the sum of the Drude response, and Lorentz-oscillator responses due to phonons. These results demonstrate the band transport, which is further confirmed by the Hall effect measurements. The hole mobility estimated from the spectral analyses is 7–11 cm2 V−1 s−1, a significantly large value. The reported evaluation methods for broadband $$\widetilde{\sigma }$$ spectra can help elucidate carrier transport mechanisms in various conducting films.

    N,N'-dihydroxy-1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide (NDI-(OH)2) has attracted much attention in recent years, because its doubly deprotonated state, (O-NDI-O)2-, has metal-coordination ability and characteristic electronic transition useful for designing electronic and optical functions. In contrast, a molecular crystal with the mono-deprotonated (HO-NDI-O)- ion remains unknown. We herein report an organic crystal containing non-disproportionated  (HO-NDI-O)- ions, which are connected by very strong O-H-O hydrogen bonds. Its lowest energy absorption band (450 to 650 nm) is observed in between that of NDI-(OH)2 (380 nm) and isolated (O-NDI-O)2- (500 to 850 nm) species, consistent with the molecular orbital calculations. This absorption originates from the electronic transition from deprotonated imide-based orbitals to NDI-core orbitals, which can be influenced by the hydrogen bonds around imide group. Consequently, the optical properties of NDI-(OH)2 can be modulated by the stepwise deprotonation and hydrogen-bonding interactions.
