This paper reports on a design concept for an adjustable thermoelectric generator (TEG) comprising multiple thermoelectric (TE) modules. This TEG allows for controlling the output power and internal resistance of the TEG by adjusting the number of TE modules connected. First, plate‐type TE modules were fabricated by depositing an Al layer on a Fe plate (using easily available materials). TEGs were fabricated by connecting up to eight modules by alligator clips, and the TE performance of TEGs with different numbers of modules was evaluated. It was verified experimentally that the Seebeck coefficient of the TEGs increased in proportion to the number of TE modules. However, the maximum output power did not do so due to the high connection resistance of the alligator clips. Next, the connection resistance between Fe and Al plates was measured when the plates were stacked in various ways and found that Cu plates (sandwiched between the plates and fixed with a jig) realized low connection resistance. Based on the above experimental results, the relationships between TE performance of the TEGs and the number of TE modules connected were predicted by a theoretical model considering the connection resistance between TE modules. This paper introduces the design concept of a TEG, which controls output power and internal resistance by adjusting the number of TE modules to take into account the resistance of the device being powered.

Metal/metal interfaces play a crucial role in the practical applications of common metallic thermoelectric modules (TEMs), which economically convert heat to electricity in an environmentally friendly manner. The effect of modulation of Fe/Al interface states, introduced by the application of large bias currents, on the thermoelectric properties of the Fe/Al-based TEMs was investigated. The Seebeck coefficients of TEMs after applying bias currents in the Fe → Al and Al → Fe directions increased from 2.1 and 2.5 to 2.5 and 2.9 μV K−1, respectively, with prolonged applying them. The densities of Fe/Al interface states, calculated based on the capacitance– and conductance–frequency characteristics of the only Fe/Al interfacial samples, decreased from 2.6 × 1014 to 1.8 × 1011 cm−2 eV−1 with prolonged applying the bias currents. These results indicate that the TEMs’ Seebeck coefficients and the densities of Fe/Al interface states were negatively correlated. To enhance Seebeck coefficients, reductions in densities of interface states between dissimilar metals provide an alternative strategy for designing high-performance metallic TEMs.

Abstract Sensors for detecting chloride ions have been required for routine monitoring of industry and human health. This study proposes a concept of an ion sensor based on CuO x nanofilms with different oxygen contents. The CuO x -based sensors exhibited an increase in DC current for those with low oxygen content and a decrease for those with high oxygen content following exposure to a chloride ion solution. AC impedance analysis suggested differential reactions of chloride ions in the bulk and surface regions of CuO x , dependent on the oxygen content. For the CuO x -based sensors with a ratio of 0.78 oxygen to copper atoms at chloride ion concentrations of 10−1000 ppm, the sensitivity in the bulk region calculated from AC impedance was 61−2926, which was higher than the sensitivity of 1.3−2.6 calculated from DC impedance. Finally, CuO x -based sensors demonstrated identifiability for chloride ions compared to sodium and calcium ions.

Many Cu oxide/TiO2 p–n nanojunctions were fabricated by introducing the concept of using n-type TiO2 layers to the fabrication method of p-type Cu oxide nanowires by stress-induced migration. Cu oxide/TiO2 nanojunctions were formed along with nanowire growth by heating a Cu thin film with TiO2 passivation layers of different thicknesses. The presence of p–n nanojunctions at the Cu oxide/TiO2 interface was analyzed by current–voltage and electrochemical impedance measurements. The sheet resistance of the samples decreased as the TiO2 thickness increased from 0 to 20 nm and then increased with increasing TiO2 thickness. The shapes of Nyquist plots consisted of two semicircles, one distorted semicircle, and two distorted semicircles for samples without a TiO2 layer, with 2 or 20 nm TiO2 layer, and with 100 or 200 nm TiO2 layer, respectively. The TiO2 thickness dependence of these electrical characteristics suggests that electrical conduction in the sample heated with a TiO2 passivation layer was through the Cu oxide grain surface, Cu oxide/TiO2 interface, and Cu oxide nanowires. In the equivalent circuit representing this electrical conduction, the capacitance values at the Cu oxide/TiO2 interface decreased with increasing TiO2 thickness. These results suggest that a thicker TiO2 passivation layer led to the formation of more p–n nanojunctions at the Cu oxide/TiO2 interface.
