Abstract
Macroecological patterns of life history traits, such as larval size, are fundamental to understanding the biogeography and diversity of marine invertebrates. The long-established Thorson’s Rule hypothesizes an increase in maternal energy allocation per offspring with increasing latitude, primarily as an adaptation to offset slower development in cold, food-limited waters. Here, we conduct the largest analysis to date on decapod crustaceans using the size of the first larval instar as a proxy for per offspring investment, to test whether reproductive and developmental patterns are governed by environmental factors on an evolutionary timescale. Our results confirm a strong phylogenetic signal in larval size and reveal that it systematically increases with latitude and greater water depth. This pattern aligns with ambient habitat conditions of lower temperature and higher dissolved oxygen. As expected, we found a strong inverse relationship between larval size and the number of larval stages, confirming that larger, provisioned offspring undergo abbreviated development. In addition, our findings support the hypothesis that increased per offspring investment and larval abbreviation represent a conservative, bet-hedging evolutionary strategy to minimize the vulnerable planktonic duration in cold, high-latitude and deep-sea environments. The deep-sea trend is, therefore, a conceptual extension of the latitudinal gradient into the vertical dimension. This study consolidates the notion that temperature, oxygen and developmental constraint, are the overriding global drivers of offspring investment strategies in decapod crustaceans, shaping their evolutionary pathways and global macroecological patterns.

Slipper (Scyllaridae) and spiny (Palinuridae) lobsters show a complex life cycle with a planktonic larval phase, named phyllosoma. This unique larval form within Achelata (Decapoda) is characterized by a transparent dorsoventrally compressed body and a pair of antennae. This conspicuous morphology has been attributed to adaptive specialization of planktonic life. Early studies suggest that phyllosoma morphology has remained constant over the evolutionary history of Achelata, while recent evidence points out large morphological changes and that diversification of phyllosoma larvae is a consequence of radiation and specialization processes to exploit different habitats. Given the ecological and evolutive significance of phyllosoma, we used shape variation of the first phyllosoma stage (phyllosoma I) and a time-calibrated phylogeny of extant Achelata to study how diversification of phyllosoma I shape occurred along with the evolutionary history of Achelata. Our results show a conserved phyllosoma I with a pear-shaped cephalic shield and large antennae in spiny lobsters and older groups of slipper lobsters, yet highly specialized phyllosoma I with wide rounded cephalic shield and short antennae in younger groups of slipper lobsters. Analyses revealed two bursts of lineage diversification in mid and late history without a slowdown in recent times. Both bursts preceded large bursts of morphological disparity. These results joined with the allopatric distribution of species and convergence of phyllosoma I shapes between largely divergent groups suggest that diversification involves nonadaptive radiation processes. However, the correlation of a major direction of shape with the maximum distribution depth of adults and the occurrence of the second burst of diversification post-extinction of competitors within Achelata presuppose some ecological opportunities that might have promoted lineage and morphological diversification, fitting to the characteristic components of adaptive radiations. Therefore, we conclude that diversification of Achelata presents a main signature of nonadaptive radiation with some components of adaptive radiation.

The Sebastes inermis complex includes three sympatric species (Sebastes cheni, viz Sebastes inermis, and Sebastes ventricosus) with clear ecomorphological differences, albeit incomplete reproductive isolation. The presence of putative morphological hybrids (PMH) with plausibly higher fitness than the parent species indicates the need to confirm whether hybridization occurs within the complex. In this sense, we assessed the dynamics of genetic divergence and hybridization within the species complex using a panel of 10 microsatellite loci, and sequences of the mitochondrial control region (D-loop) and the intron-free rhodopsin (RH1) gene. The analyses revealed the presence of three distinct genetic clusters, large genetic distances using D-loop sequences, and distinctive mutations within the RH1 gene. These results are consistent with the descriptions of the three species. Two microsatellite loci had signatures of divergent selection, indicating that they are linked to genomic regions that are crucial for speciation. Furthermore, nonsynonymous mutations within the RH1 gene detected in S. cheni and "Kumano" (a PMH) suggest dissimilar adaptations related to visual perception in dim-light environments. The presence of individuals with admixed ancestry between two species confirmed hybridization. The presence of nonsynonymous mutations within the RH1 gene and the admixed ancestry of the "Kumano" morphotype highlight the potential role of hybridization in generating novelties within the species complex. We discuss possible outcomes of hybridization within the species complex, considering hybrid fitness and assortative mating. Overall, our findings indicate that the genetic divergence of each species is maintained in the presence of hybridization, as expected in a scenario of speciation-with-gene-flow.
