    More details Close

    Proton-transfer mechanisms and hydration states were investigated in chitin films possessing the functionality of fuel-cell electrolytes. The absolute hydration number per chitin molecule (N) as a function of relative humidity (RH) was determined from the OH stretching bands of H2O molecules, and the proton conductivity was found to enhance above N = 2 (80%RH). The FIR spectrum at 500–900 cm−1 for 20%RH (N < 1) together with first-principles calculations clearly shows that the w1 site has the same hydration strength as the w2 site. The molecular dynamics simulations for N = 2 demonstrate that H2O molecules with tiny fluctuations are localized on w1 and w2, and the hydrogen-bond (HB) network is formed via the CH2OH group of chitin molecules. Shrinkage of the O–O distance (dOO), which synchronizes with the barrier height, is required for proton transfer from H3O+ to adjacent CH2OH groups or H2O molecules. Nevertheless, dOO is hardly modulated for N = 2 because H2O molecules are strongly constrained on w1 and w2, and therefore, the transfer probability becomes small. For N = 3, novel HBs emerged between the additional H2O molecules broadly distributed on the w3 site and H2O molecules on w1 and w2. The transfer probability is enhanced because large fluctuations and diffusions in the whole H2O molecule yield large modulations of dOO. Consequently, long-range proton hopping is driven by the Zundel-type protonated hydrates in the water network.

    The purpose of this study is to elucidate the low-temperature photoreactive dynamics by terahertz waves and to develop their applications, using the formation and cleavage of hydrogen-bonded networks observed in the temperature-dependent terahertz spectral spectrum as an index. Terahertz and synchrotron infrared spectrum measurements and first-principles calculation were performed on microcrystal samples of five water-soluble vitamins, amorphous sample DMAPS showing biocompatibility, and single crystal samples of vitamins that capture hydrated salt ions. The structure of the harvested single crystal sample was determined by low-temperature X-ray crystallographic analysis. In particular, the anharmonicity evaluation, the replacement of the temperature effect by the permittivity, and the capture of liquid-like hydrated salt ions into a single crystal, which were developed in this study, provide useful information to pursue terahertz-driven low-temperature photoreactive dynamics.

    The 1-D water nanotube-like cluster (WNT) stabilized by channel pores in a nanoporous molecular crystal can confine some gases as methane and xenon. Their WNT forms a gas hydrate stabilized even at room temperature and in the high pressure at ~20 atm, we have found that they reversibly can take and release a great deal of methane and xenon gas. Meanwhile, when the electrolytic ions are confined to WNT, the ionic conductivity is as high as that in bulk aqueous solution. That is the reason why the coherent interaction would be probably caused of the electrolytic ions with 1-D regular arrays.

    We developed novel prober system in combination with LCR meter and impedance analyzer. Employing extremely small single crystal, complex impedance is available to measure at 20 Hz~3 GHz. By considering an appropriate equivalent circuit, we have clarified the dynamics of the water network in molecular porous crystal Ni(cyclam), and the erythritol-intercalated water network. The dielectric constant in wide range of frequency (700 Hz‐16.3 GHz) indicates the dielectric dispersion due to configurational change of electric dipole concerning strongly hydrated water molecules in the primary and secondary hydration shells. The relaxation time is three orders of magnitude smaller than one in free water. The erythritol-intercalated water network shows large dielectric constant and isotope effect, which reveal a local proton transfer generated near the erythritol molecule. We have successfully opened the way for the study of individual biological molecules by utilizing hydrophilic nanospaces.

    The gas handling apparatus was made to control relative humidity and pressure inside the pressure cell, which is equipped in our Fourier transformed infrared spectrometer. Employing the system, we tried the experiments on gas sorption of CO2, N2, Xe into the 14- and 18-sided cavities consisting of water molecules in the nanochannel. The appropriate relative humidity was determined to dehydrate the water molecules inside the water cage. In spite of infrared inactive molecular vibrations, noble infrared band due to the gas molecule hydrated in the water cage seems to appear, because charge polarization may be induced owing to strong hydrations and interfacial interactions. From the microwave conductivity and infrared spectra, we clarified that proton and protonic hole in the water network form an Eigen-type hydrate with a local distortion. The proton and protonic hole are generated by the self-dissociation of water molecules directly hydrogen bonded to the framework molecule.

    In the mesoporous carbon CMK systems, there exist a wide variety of structures. We have carried out the measurements on the electrical conductivities and magnetic susceptibilities in these CMK systems. As a result, we have clarified that low-temperature conducting properties are caused by a two-dimensional variable range hopping mechanism. Under zero-field cooling, the magnetic susceptibility takes a maximum in the vicinity of 60K though, under field cooling, the susceptibilities only exhibit an increase. These facts indicate a formation of spin-glass states in these mesoporous carbon systems. We expect that the spin originates from non-bonding π-electrons in graphen sheets composing the mesoporous structure. In order to detect dynamical properties of low-dimensional electronic systems, we have realized spectroscopic measurement in the range of terahertz frequency. We employ the transmission measurement based on time-domain spectroscopy. The frequency dependence of complex conductivity and complex dielectric constant are determined from 0.1 to 2 THz. Since we have much interests in the low temperature dynamics, the optical cryostat has been installed in the terahertz unit. Now the minimum measuring temperature is achieved to be 2 K. With use of the terahertz spectrometer, we have measured niobium films, self-organizing DNA films and various mesoporous systems to obtain high-frequency dynamics. In addition, the microwave conductivity and infrared spectra were measured for artificially synthesized dry DNA crystals. We have found the importance of the role of primary hydration even in the dry DNA systems.

    In this study, we constructed a hypersonic system to measure sound absorptions in microwave frequency range of low dimensional electronic systems with strong correlations. The excitation and detection of hypersonics were too difficult to realize, so that only a few studies were reported on a hypersonic absorption of solids. Our group possesses both ultrasound and microwave techniques, which are fundamentally required to build up the hypersonic system. We developed reentrant cavities with high Q values made of an oxygen free copper to generate and detect hypersonics. Most difficult thing was to control precisely the resonant frequency of the cavity, because the frequency varied with temperatures. A huge amount of times were necessary to develop the control mechanisms. Finally we achieved the frequency control by changing cavity volumes with three manipulators mounted on a top flange of the insert at room temperature. The electric circuits were based on a superheterodyne detection to increase resolution. We carried out longitudinal hypersonic measurements of single crystal quartz with 1 cm on length. First and second echo signals were successfully detected, and the temperature change of the absorption coefficient was identified to follow T^3 dependence.

誘電率ε_1(σ_2に比例する)の解析は、金属シフトγ/n(γ:充填係数、n:分極定数)の取り方に敏感である。

    We have studied the microwave response on the following systems. (1) organic conductors forming the quasi two-dimensional systems such as BEDT-TTF and BEDT-TSF salts. (2) Semiconductor superlattice. (3) Strongly correlated electron systems with low-carrier density. The microwave experiments with frequency 10〜200 GHz have been performed at the temperature 0.5〜300 K under the magnetic field up to 10 T. The research results are briefly summarized below. (A) We have measured the surface impedance in rare-earth intermetallic superconductor CeRuィイD22ィエD2. The complex conductivity has been determined as a function of temperature. There appears a remarkable coherence peak just below TィイD2cィエD2. The penetration depth follows the BCS theory for strong coupling. Our microwave experiments confirm that CeRuィイD22ィエD2 is a conventional BCS superconductor with s-wave symmetry. (B) Cyclotron resonance and electron spin resonance have been measured in low-carrier density system YbィイD24ィエD2AsィイD23ィエD2. The cyclotron mass can be obtained as 0.7mィイD20ィエD2, which is consistent with the band structure calculations. D2 (X=H,D) indicates that the cyclotron mass of πelectron is never changed by the deuteration. Reflecting the Kohn's theorem, the cyclotron mass is lighter than the mass obtained by SdH and dHvA effects. (D) In connection with the microwave, we have carried out the measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, NMR and acoustic dHvA effect, etc.

    Three years ago we found out room-temperature ferromagnetic behavior in 1 : 2 mixed salts of TCNQ or TCNQF_4 with TCNQF_4 radical anion. The similar behavior was also recognized in 1 : 2 mixed salts of diethyl-substituted TCNQ or tetracyanonaphthoquinodimethane with their radical anions. This observation is quite remarkable, since the highest temperature of spin ordering is 36 K for purely organic ferromagnets and weak ferromagnets obtained so far. However, the saturation magnetization observed in these 1 : 2 mized salts is only 0.1% of the value (5,580 emu.mol^<-1>) obtained by one S=1/2 spin per formula unit. For the 1 : 2 mixed salt of dimethyl-substituted TCNQ with its radical anion, metal-like high electrical conductivity was observed together with room-temperature ferromagnetic behavior. Accordingly, this mixed salt can be regarded as an analogue to a ferromagnetic metal such as iron, cobalt and nickel. Much interest is directed toward the interaction between the interaction between conducting pi electron and localized d spin, while this mixed salt should be noted as a new molecular system involving both conducting pi electron and localized pi spin. In summary, room-temperature ferromagnetic behavior can be in common observed in 1 : 2 mixed salts of TCNQ, substituted TCNQ's and TCNQ analogue, but the mechanism of spin ordering remains to be still not elucidated. Further study is necessary in order to elucidate the mechanism of spin ordering and to search a room-temperature (ferro)magnet with larger saturation magnetization.
