Abstract
The global transition to sustainable energy systems requires breakthroughs in electrochemical storage technologies that are not only safe, but also resource-efficient. Solid-state batteries (SSBs), which use superionic solid electrolytes (SEs) instead of flammable liquid electrolytes, are at the forefront of this transformation. In general, SEs promise increased safety, access to high-voltage cathode and metal anode chemistries, and new avenues for circular design and recyclability. However, to reach their full potential, intertwined challenges related to ion transport, (electro)chemical stability, manufacturing, processing, and cost must be overcome. This “2026 Roadmap on Next-Generation Solid Electrolytes for Battery Applications” outlines new directions that will contribute to research in the field of SSBs over the next decade. It provides an overview of the current state of the art in sulfide- and halide-based solid electrolytes for Li and Na systems, examines post-Li/Na chemistries (K, Mg, and others), and highlights advances in hydroborates, fully reduced (irreducible), and compositionally complex (high-entropy) electrolytes, as well as glass-ceramic electrolytes. Beyond material innovation, the paper emphasizes the critical role of redox activity in SEs, scalable processing, high-throughput synthesis, and machine learning, as well as operando analytics and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to accelerate discoveries and gain a better understanding of structure-property relationships. Finally, the growing importance of recycling and circular design for ensuring sustainability is highlighted. By combining insights from chemistry, materials science, data (computational) science, and manufacturing, this article assumes that future SEs will progressively evolve from passive components to active design elements in high-energy-density electrochemical systems. The integration of multidisciplinary innovations will be crucial to realizing the potential of SSBs in practical technologies that power a decarbonized world.

Abstract
Traditional selectivity of gas sensors determined by the magnitude of the response value has significant limitations. The distinctive inversion sensing behavior not only defies the traditional sensing theory but also provides insight into defining selectivity. Herein, the novel definition of selectivity is established in a study with VO2(M1). The sensing behavior of VO2(M1) is investigated after its synthesis conditions optimization by machine learning. In gases of the same nature, VO2(M1) shows remarkably selective for NH3 marked with unique resistance increase behavior. Such anomalous behavior is attributed to the formation of the Schottky junction between VO2(M1) and the electrode. The “work function‐electron affinity” relation is summarized as the selectivity coefficient, a parameter for predicting the selectivity of the sensing material effectively.

Abstract
All‐solid‐state batteries have attracted much attention because of the expected high energy density and inherent safety stemming from their nonflammable property. While improving the energy density of the cathode poses a significant challenge, here we introduce a novel battery design strategy to enhance energy density by employing bifunctional cathode material, allowing the weight ratio of the active material to be increased without using an electrolyte for the cathode. By employing lithium‐containing vanadium halide Li2VCl4, serving as both active material and electrolyte, the all‐solid‐state battery cell with no electrolyte for the cathode with a capacity approaching the theoretical limit is demonstrated. In addition, we present a guideline for improving capacity retention from the perspective of interfacial stability. Notably, thermodynamic analysis revealed interfacial instability between Li2VCl4 and sulfide material. A double‐layer separator, incorporating halide materials for the cathode side, was implemented to enhance the interfacial stability and mitigate the capacity degradation. Furthermore, it was found that the rate capability depends on the lithium content in synthesized Li2‐xVCl4 and does not change with the state of charge significantly. This study will contribute to designing the bifunctional cathode material for an all‐solid‐state battery and describe its unique properties.
