Abstract We examine Ar XVI spectra measured by an x-ray crystal spectrometer to estimate electron temperature anisotropy in high-temperature electron cyclotron heated plasmas in the Large Helical Device (LHD). We calculate the atomic structure and electron impact excitation cross section between magnetic sublevels of Ar XVI. By assuming a bi-Maxwellian electron distribution function and considering the mount parameters of the x-ray spectrometer in LHD, we model the expected intensity ratio q/r as a function of T e⊥B and T e∣∣B , where ⊥B and ∣∣B denote perpendicular and parallel components to the magnetic axis of toroidal plasma, respectively. The calculation results show that the intensity ratio of q and r, which are formed by inner-shell excitation from the ground state of Ar15+, is sensitive to electron temperature anisotropy. We apply the calculation results to the LHD experiments. The ratio of q/r changes with variations in electron density and collision frequency. In the core and low ν e region, T e⊥B is predominant, and the electron temperature becomes isotropic above ν e  > 104 Hz. By combining electron temperature measurements from Thomson scattering and radial profile of Ar15+ ions estimated using the extreme ultraviolet spectrometer, local values of T e⊥B /T e∣∣B are quantitatively estimated using the q/r ratio. The derived T e⊥B /T e∣∣B is compared with collision frequency, radial electric field, and effective helical ripple, and the experimental results are explained qualitatively.

Abstract Superconducting tokamak JT-60SA plays an essential role in fusion research and development by supporting and complementing ITER project, providing directions to the DEMO design activity and fostering next generation scientists and engineers. Since the incident of the Equilibrium Field coil #1 during the Integrated Commissioning (IC) in March 2021, both EU and JA Implementing agencies (IAs) have examined how to ensure safety operation of JT-60SA by mitigating the risk of possible discharge occurrence inside the cryostat. Based on the experience of the Global Paschen tests, the IAs have established a strategy of risk mitigation measures, which is a combination of (i) reinforcement of insulation, (ii) avoiding unnecessary voltage application to the coil systems and (iii) immediate de-energization of the coils when deteriorated vacuum condition is detected. Thanks to the considerable efforts of the Integrated Project Team (IPT) members, the IC restarted in May 2023. After the confirmation of superconducting state of coil systems (TF, EF and CS), the coil energization test and the plasma operation (OP-1) starts. The first plasma was successfully achieved on 23 October 2023 with a limited value of applied voltage and current to the coils. The plasma configuration control will be also confirmed with low plasma current and low auxiliary heating power conditions. Based on the IO-F4E-QST collaboration, activities of JT-60SA have been shared with the IO and provided an important lesson learned for ITER assembly and commissioning, and will provide an outstanding contribution to fusion research at large. After OP-1, Maintenance & Enhancement phase 1 (M/E-1) starts from January 2024, in which in-vessel components are installed, and heating system and diagnostic system are extensively upgraded to allow high power heating experiment planned in OP-2. In order to make the best use of JT-60SA, newly organized JT-60SA experiment team will refine the research plan in the future high heating power operation phase.

Abstract Recently, experiments on basic plasma physics issues for solving future problems in fusion energy have been performed on a Large Helical Device. There are several problems to be solved in future devices for fusion energy. Emerging issues in burning plasma are: alpha-channeling (ion heating by alpha particles), turbulence and transport in electron dominant heating helium ash exhaust, reduction of the divertor heat load. To solve these problems, understanding the basic plasma physics of (1) wave–particle interaction through (inverse) Landau damping, (2) characteristics of electron-scale (high-k) turbulence, (3) ion mixing and the isotope effect, and (4) turbulence spreading and detachment, is necessary. This overview discusses the experimental studies on these issues and turbulent transport in multi-ion plasma and other issues in the appendix.

Abstract Spectroscopic studies of emissions released from tungsten ions combined with a pellet injection technique have been conducted in LHD for contribution to the tungsten transport study in tungsten divertor fusion devices and for expansion of the experimental database of tungsten line emissions. The spectral intensities of W5+, W24+–W28+, W37+, W38+, W41+–W43+, W45+, and W46+ emission lines were measured simultaneously over a wide wavelength range from X-ray to visible. Time evolutions of the various tungsten line spectra indicate that the tungsten confinement time depends on the electron density of the plasma and is long in high density plasmas, on the order of seconds, and short in low density plasmas, on the order of sub-seconds. When the confinement time was long, the tungsten ions remained in the plasma until the end of the discharge, changing their dominant charge with the change in electron temperature. When the confinement time was short, the tungsten ions rapidly decreased in all charge states and disappeared. Space-resolved EUV and visible spectroscopy measurements have revealed that tungsten ions stayed in the core region of the plasma with changing their dominant charge state depending on the electron temperature in the discharges with the long confinement time. Detailed analysis of soft X-ray emission suggested that the confinement time increases with density and becomes saturated when the central electron density exceeds 2 × 1013 cm-3.

Abstract Recently an improved confinement regime, characterized by reduced turbulent fluctuations has been observed in the Large Helical Device upon the injection of boron powder into the plasma (Nespoli et al 2022 Nat. Phys.18 350–56). In this article, we report in more detail the experimental observations of increased plasma temperature and the decrease of turbulent fluctuations across the plasma cross section, on an extended database. In particular, we compare powders of different materials (B, C, BN), finding similar temperature improvement and turbulence response for the three cases. Modeling of the powder penetration into the plasma and of neoclassical electric field and fluxes support the interpretation of the experimental results. Additionally, we report evidence of the temperature improvement increasing with powder injection rates and decreasing for both increasing density and heating power. Though, plasma turbulence response varies depending on the initial conditions of the plasma, making it difficult to draw an inclusive description of the phenomenon.

This study has systematically investigated the atomic number (Z) dependence of spectra from gallium-like (Ga-like) ions of heavy elements. We have mainly analyzed the experimental spectra recorded in high-temperature plasmas produced in the Large Helical Device (LHD) for various elements with atomic numbers from 57 onward. The measured wavelengths are compared with theoretical values calculated with a multi-configuration Dirac Fock code. As a result, we have successfully obtained Z-dependent wavelengths of several prominent transitions of Ga-like ions, including a magnetic dipole (M1) transition. Many of them have been experimentally identified for the first time in this study. The present results manifest the significant effects of configuration interaction and spin–orbit interaction for highly charged heavy ions.

Abstract Toward real-time wall conditioning, impurity powder dropping experiments with boron powder were performed in the 22nd experimental campaign of the Large Helical Device. To examine the deposition and desorption process of boron, we focus on boron hydride (BH) molecules which presumably populate near plasma-facing components. We performed spatially-resolved spectroscopic measurements of emission by boron ions and BH molecules. From the measurement, we found that BH and B+ were concentrated on the divertor viewing chord, which suggest boron deposition in the divertor region. By comparing Hγ emissions with and without boron injection, neutral hydrogen shows uniform reduction in the SOL region, whereas less reduction of neutral hydrogen is confirmed in the divertor region. Although emissions from BH and B+ increased linearly, emissions by B0 and B4+ became constant after the middle of the discharge. Continuous reduction of carbon density in the core plasma was confirmed even after B0 and B4+ became constant. The results may show reduction of hydrogen recycling and facilitation of impurity gettering by boron in the divertor region and thus effective real-time wall conditioning.

Abstract For plasma spectroscopy, Stokes spectropolarimetry is used as a method to spatially invert the viewing-chord-integrated spectrum on the basis of the correspondence between the given magnetic field profile along the viewing chord and the Zeeman effect appearing on the spectrum. Its application to fusion-related toroidal plasmas is, however, limited owing to the low spatial resolution as a result of the difficulty in distinguishing between the Zeeman and Doppler effects. To resolve this issue, we increased the relative magnitude of the Zeeman effect by observing a near-infrared emission line on the basis of the greater wavelength dependence of the Zeeman effect than of the Doppler effect. By utilizing the increased Zeeman effect, we are able to invert the measured spectrum with a high spatial resolution by Monte Carlo particle transport simulation and by reproducing the measured spectra with the semiempirical adjustment of the recycling condition at the first walls. The inversion result revealed that when the momentum exchange collisions of atoms are negligible, the velocity distribution of core-fueling atoms is mainly determined by the initial distribution at the time of recycling. The inversion result was compared with that obtained using a two-point emission model used in previous studies. The latter approximately reflects the parameters of atoms near the emissivity peak.

An energy transfer phenomenon between energetic ions, which cannot be explained only considering the Coulomb scattering process, was observed on a large helical device (LHD). This phenomenon often occurs in fusion reactivity enhancement and fast-ion slowing-down process that can be observed as a delay in the decay time of the D(d,n)3He neutron generation rate. The transferred energy required to induce such a reactivity enhancement or delay in the fast-ion slowing-down time (neutron decay time) was examined based on the Boltzmann−Fokker−Planck analysis in which a discrete energy transfer process, called nuclear elastic scattering (NES), is included. It was shown that even though the cross section of the NES is smaller than that of the Coulomb scattering, enough knock-on population appears in the energetic region in ion distribution function to induce the observable NES effects; thus, enough energy is transferred from beam ions to fast component of bulk ion distribution function indirectly and the transferred energy per unit time via NES is comparable to the Coulomb scattering rate. This study analytically demonstrates that the observed phenomena on LHD can be explained smoothly by considering the alternative indirect energy transfer channel between energetic ions, which can be comparable with the one via Coulomb scattering.

Spectroscopic studies for emissions released from tungsten ions have been conducted in the Large Helical Device (LHD) for contribution to the tungsten transport study in tungsten divertor fusion devices and for expansion of the experimental database of tungsten line emissions. Tungsten ions are distributed in the LHD plasma by injecting a pellet consisting of a small piece of tungsten metal wire enclosed by a carbon tube. Line emissions from W0, W5+, W6+, W24+–W28+, W37+, W38+, and W41+–W46+ are observed simultaneously in the visible (3200–3550 Å), vacuum ultraviolet (250–1050 Å), and extreme ultraviolet (5–300 Å) wavelength ranges and the wavelengths are summarized. Temporal evolutions of line emissions from these charge states are compared for comprehensive understanding of tungsten impurity behavior in a single discharge. The charge distribution of tungsten ions strongly depends on the electron temperature. Measurements of emissions from W10+ to W20+ are still insufficient, which is addressed as a future task.

Abstract Isotope effects are one of the most important issues for predicting future reactor operations. Large helical device (LHD) is the presently working largest stellarator/helical device using super conducting helical coils. In LHD, deuterium experiments started in 2017. Extensive studies regarding isotope effects on transport have been carried out. In this paper, the results of isotope effect studies in LHD are reported. The systematic studies were performed adjusting operational parameters and nondimensional parameters. In L mode like normal confinement plasma, where internal and edge transport barriers are not formed, the scaling of global energy confinement time (τE) with operational parameters shows positive mass dependence (M0.27; where M is effective ion mass) in electron cyclotron heating plasma and no mass dependence (M0.0) in neutral beam injection heating plasma. The non-negative ion mass dependence is anti-gyro-Bohm scaling. The role of the turbulence in isotope effects was also found by turbulence measurements and gyrokinetic simulation. Better accessibility to electron and ion internal transport barrier (ITB) plasma is found in deuterium (D) plasma than in hydrogen (H). Gyro kinetic non-linear simulation shows reduced ion heat flux due to the larger generation of zonal flow in deuterium plasma. Peaked carbon density profile plays a prominent role in reducing ion energy transport in ITB plasma. This is evident only in plasma with deuterium ions. New findings on the mixing and non-mixing states of D and H particle transports are reported. In the mixing state, ion particle diffusivities are higher than electron particle diffusivities and D and H ion density profiles are almost identical. In the non-mixing state, ion particle diffusivity is much lower than electron diffusivity. Deuterium and hydrogen ion profiles are clearly different. Different turbulence structures were found in the mixing and non-mixing states suggesting different turbulence modes play a role.

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra of highly charged praseodymium (Pr) and neodymium (Nd) ions have been investigated in optically thin high-temperature plasmas produced in the Large Helical Device (LHD), a magnetically confined torus device for fusion research. Discrete spectral lines emitted mainly from highly charged ions having 4s or 4p outermost electrons were observed in plasmas with electron temperatures of 0.8–1.8 keV. Most of the isolated lines of Ga-like to Cu-like Nd ions were identified by a comparison with the recent data recorded in an electron beam ion trap (EBIT). The isolated lines of Pr ions corresponding to the identified lines of Nd ions were easily assigned from a similarity of the spectral feature for these two elements. As a result, some of the lines of Pr ions have been newly identified experimentally for the first time in this study.

Abstract Tungsten W46+ lines were successfully observed in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelength range of 7 ∼ 8 Å in the Large Helical Device (LHD). Tungsten ions are distributed in the neutral beam injection (NBI) heated LHD plasma by injecting a pellet consisting of a small piece of tungsten metal wire enclosed by a carbon tube. While the electron temperature has a sudden drop due to the pellet injection, it can be recovered by applying electron cyclotron heating (ECH) together with continuous NBI heating. It is found that a W46+ line at 7.93 Å is emitted when the central electron temperature ranges around 3.4 keV with relatively high intensity and is isolated from other intrinsic impurity lines. The 7.93 Å line consists of two lines of forbidden transitions which are blended with each other; an electric quadrupole (E2) transition at 7.928 Å and a magnetic octupole (M3) transition at 7.938 Å. Observation of W46+ lines in the stellarator experiments is reported for the first time in the present study while the lines have been already observed in several tokamak experiments. The electron temperature dependence of the emission intensity of the 7.93 Å line agreed well with that of the fractional abundance of W46+ ions calculated using the ionization and recombination rate coefficients available in the ADAS database under the assumption of the collisional ionization equilibrium. The 7.93 Å line observed in this study will be used as tools for further spectroscopic researches, such as the measurements of spatial profile of W46+ ions using a space-resolved EUV spectrometer developed in LHD.

<p>The termination process of long pulse plasma discharges in the Large Helical Device (LHD) have been observed with fast framing cameras, which shows that the reason for the termination of the discharged has been changed with increased plasma heating power, improvements of plasma heating systems and change of the divertor configuration, etc. For long pulse discharges in FYs2010-2012, the main reason triggering the plasma termination was reduction of ICRF heating power with rise of iron ion emission due to electric breakdown in an ICRF antenna. In the experimental campaign in FY2013, the duration time of ICRF heated long pulse plasma discharges has been extended to about 48 minutes with a plasma heating power of ∼1.2 MW and a line-averaged electron density of ∼1.2×1019 m−3. The termination of the discharges was triggered by release of large amounts of carbon dusts from closed divertor regions, indicating that the control of dust formation in the divertor regions is indispensable for extending the duration time of long pulse discharges.</p>

<p>Two-dimensional (2-D) distribution of edge impurity line emissions has been measured for CIV, CVI, FeXV and FeXVIII using a space-resolved extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrometer in Large Helical Device (LHD). The top and the bottom edges of the distribution show a strong emission trajectory along the plasma boundary. In this study, the poloidal distribution of the impurity emissivity is evaluated by analyzing the 2-D distribution against magnetic flux surfaces calculated with a three-dimensional (3-D) equilibrium code, i.e., VMEC. The inner and outer boundaries of the edge impurity locations are estimated by analyzing the vertical profile of each impurity emission measured at different toroidal positions. The observation chord length passing through an emission contour is calculated on the basis of the radial thickness of the impurity emission location. The poloidal distributions of CIV, CVI, FeXV and FeXVIII with different ionization energies are thus reconstructed from their 2-D distributions. A non-uniform poloidal distribution is clearly observed for each of these impurity species at different plasma radii. It is experimentally confirmed that the poloidal distribution becomes gradually uniform as the radial location of the impurity ions changes from the ergodic layer toward the plasma core. The non-uniform poloidal distribution of the CIV emissivity is further confirmed by a simulation with the 3-D edge transport code, EMC3-EIRENE.</p>

<p>Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectra of emissions released from tungsten ions at lower ionization stages were measured in the Large Helical Device (LHD) using three 20 cm normal incidence spectrometers in the wavelength range of 300 to 2400 Å. Tungsten ions were introduced in the LHD plasma by injecting a pellet consisting of a small piece of tungsten metal and polyethylene tube. The VUV spectroscopy revealed that WVI 639.683 Å, 677.722 Å, and 639.683 × 2 Å lines were useful lines for monitoring tungsten ion behaviors because they had large intensities and were isolated from other intrinsic impurity lines.</p>

<p>Zeff profile analysis has been carried out in a low-density and high-Ti discharge with carbon pellet injection. The evolution of the Zeff profile shows a centrally peaked profile just after the pellet injection while the profile gradually returns to an original flat profile as a function of time. Comparison between the evolution of Zeff and Ti profiles in the plasma center strongly suggests that there is a positive relation between Zeff and Ti.</p>

TOKASTAR-2 is a small tokamak-helical hybrid device which can generate tokamak and helical configurations independently. In tokamak discharge experiment, the conductive shell was installed to increase plasma current by controlling the displacement of ohmically heated (OH) plasma. The suppression of the vertical displacement was demonstrated, but the OH plasma was still located slightly above the mid plane. To compensate this displacement, the balance between up and down vertical field coil currents should be adjusted. In addition, the construction of additional helical field coils is planned to form closed vacuum magnetic surfaces. The magnetic field line tracing analysis was carried out to determine the detailed shape and location of additional helical field coils. From the simulation, it was clarified that the location of magnetic surfaces and the averaged value of rotational transform can be controlled by adjusting coil current ratios.

The compact spherical tokamak-stellarator hybrid system, TOKASTAR, has been proposed, and particle orbit analysis in this pure-stellarator configuration has been carried out. In the original configuration produced by an outboard-side helical coil and central straight coil post, the average rotational transform is rather small, and several improved configurations were evaluated. Improved confinement of charged particles was achieved by replacing the central straight coil post with an inboard-side helical coil system. To demonstrate the original configuration concept experimentally, the Compact-TOKASTAR device (C-TOKASTAR) was constructed, and the existence of magnetic surfaces and electron confinement are suggested using the stellarator diode method.

In fusion reactors, high-Z materials will be used to balance the need to accommodate high heat load on divertor plates against consistency between fusion burning plasmas and plasma facing component (PFC) materials. However, high-Z impurities from these PFCs cause large radiation loss even if the amount of impurities is quite small. High-Z impurity transport analysis including sawtooth effects is carried out using the toroidal transport analysis linkage (TOTAL) code. The Bohm-type anomalous transport model for the core plasma and the anomalous inward flow model for impurity ions are used in addition to neoclassical transport. After comparisons with Joint European Torus (JET) impurity transport data, sawtooth effects on impurity transport in ITER are clarified with a simplified full magnetic reconnection model. The critical levels of impurity concentration in ITER are found to be 4.0 % for carbon, 0.1 % for iron, and 0.008 % for tungsten with respect to electron density. Forming an internal transport barrier (ITB) for electron density can prevent high-Z impurity accumulation. Also, sawtooth oscillation is shown to be beneficial, reducing radiation loss from the plasma core by about 20 %, although it might lead to unfavorable fusion power fluctuation of 10 %.

We compared the CO2 emissions of several fusion reactors. The magnetic confinement systems evaluated here are the tokamak reactor (TR), helical reactor (HR), and spherical tokamak reactor (ST). These models are calculated by the Physics-Engineering-Cost (PEC) code. The inertial confinement fusion reactor (IR) is also evaluated, assuming its driver energy and driver efficiency. In addition, different blanket modules and fuels are considered in the TR designs. To calculate life-cycle CO2 emission from fusion reactors defined by plasma parameters and radial build, we used a basic unit for CO2 weights (kt-CO2/t-material). Calculation results indicate that CO2 is emitted mainly in the construction stage of superconducting magnet systems for magnetic confinement fusion reactors. For the IR design, the driver system construction and pellet fabrication stages involve considerable CO2 emission. By comparing fusion reactors with other electric power generation systems in terms of CO2 emission, we confirmed that fusion reactors emit less CO2. Therefore, introducing a carbon tax has little effect on the economics of fusion reactors, and the cost of electricity (COE) from fusion reactors might be lower than that of oil-fired electric power plants when a carbon tax of around several hundred yen/t-CO2 is introduced.

A tokamak-helical hybrid device TOKASTAR-2 with outboard helical field coils located outside the toroidal field coil system was constructed. Initial plasmas are produced by the electron cyclotron heating scheme, and the plasma electron density profile is measured using electrostatic double Langmuir probes. The peak location of measured electron density profile in the radial direction agrees with the first electron cyclotron resonance layer at initial beak-down period and at final disappearance period of the plasma discharge. The suppression of bursting electron density oscillations and the shift of plasma density profile are observed in the case of applying outboard helical magnetic field.

On tokamak plasmas like ITER, it is necessary to stabilize neoclassical tearing mode (NTM) because the NTM reduces plasma temperature and fusion power output. For the analysis of stabilizing NTM in fusion plasmas, the electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD) and the non-resonant external helical field (NRHF) application are simulated using the 1.5-dimensional equilibrium/transport simulation code (TOTAL code). The 3/2 NTM is stabilized by only external helical field, but the 2/1 mode is not stabilized by only external helical field in the present model. The stabilization time becomes shorter by the combination of ECCD and NRHF than that by ECCD alone.

The coherent MHD oscillation, which consists of the fundamental frequency of several kilohertz and its higher harmonics, (harmonic oscillation: HO) has been observed in Compact Helical System. HO consists of two pairs of harmonic series. One is located in the core region near the ι = 0.5 rational surface (denoted as "HO (core)"), the other is located in the edge region near the ι = 1.0 rational surface (denoted as "HO (edge)"). In the present study, bispectral analysis is applied to the fluctuation data, for which HO is measured by beam emission spectroscopy (BES) and using magnetic probes. The analysis has revealed that fundamental mode of HO in both the magnetic and core density fluctuations have phase correlation with the harmonics including fundamental oscillation, while HO in edge density fluctuation does not have such phase correlation. Mode numbers of HOs are identical for harmonic components having different frequencies, i.e., m/n = -2/1 for HO (core) and m/n = -1/1 for HO (edge). It suggests that the generation of harmonics cannot be interpreted simply as mode coupling because the summation rule for the wavenumber is not satisfied, even though the bicoherence value is significant. The bicoherence value and relative amplitude of higher harmonics correlate with each other, which suggests that bicoherence indicates the degree of distortion of the signals.

In charge exchange spectroscopy (CXS), a simultaneous observation in different plasma toroidal cross sections and/or viewing ports is required to investigate radial distributions of ion temperatures Ti(r), and poloidal rotation velocities Vp(r) in magnetically confined toroidal plasmas. In recent studies of the edge transport barrier (ETB) in the Compact Helical System (CHS), a simultaneous viewing of the vertically elongated and the horizontally elongated plasma cross sections is used to improve the spatial resolution at the edge region. The 90 fibers used for this purpose are connected to one spectrometer, and a 256 × 243 pixel sampling CCD is used to detect the diffraction image. It is found that there is a localized edge ion temperature pedestal region with ΔTi ≈ 100 eV and Δr/a ≈ 0.1, where r and a are flux surface averaged minor radii of measured surfaces and the outermost flux surface, respectively. The negative radial electric field at the edge is increased in the high confinement phase because of the increased ion pressure.

The 3-D spatial structure - radial locality and poloidal/toroidal mode numbers - of the magnetohydrodynamic fluctuation called "edge harmonic oscillation (EHO)" in the compact helical system (CHS) was investigated using beam emission spectroscopy (BES) as the diagnostic method of the local density fluctuations and the magnetic probe array. We found two groups of harmonic oscillations in CHS, one with a frequency of 4.0 kHz and a harmonic located in the edge region of the normalized minor radius ρ = 0.95 near the rotational transform ι = 1 surface, and the other with a frequency of 3.5 kHz and a harmonic located in the core region ρ = 0.53 near the ι = 0.5 surface. The magnetic probe signals showed that the poloidal/toroidal mode numbers of the edge mode and the core mode were -1/1 and -2/1, respectively. They were consistent with the rotational transform of the magnetic field at the locations of those modes.

An improved confinement mode with reheat and edge transport barrier is observed in the Compact Helical System (CHS). This mode provides enhanced confinement in high density region (ne ˜ 1.2 × 1020 m-3) due to the increase in temperature while high density is maintained in the peripheral region.

A clear transition of edge particle transport was observed for the neutral beam heated plasmas in CHS. The heating power threshold for the transition is about 1 MW for a plasma with 2 × 1019 m-3 average density. The Hα emission drops within 1 msec and the increase of the local edge density at the transition was confirmed by means of YAG Thomson scattering and beam emission spectroscopy. When the heating power is well above the threshold, the transport barrier is maintained for the full duration of NBI heating (100 msec). A clear back transition appears when the heating power is decreased during the discharge.

Atomic and molecular processes in volumetric recombination phenomena relevant to divertor detachment are investigated in a divertor simulator MAP (Material and Plasma) -II. In the recombining plasmas, quantitative measurements of parameters, especially using a Langmuir probe, are difficult, so that the development of alternative diagnostics is important. Recombination can be induced in He plasma by puffing of He or H2. In the He puffing case, the Rydberg spectra show an electron temperature of lower than 0.1 eV, while in the H2 puffing case, the Rydberg spectra disappear even though the reduction of the ion flux is apparent, showing that another type of recombination occurs. Negative hydrogen ions are observed in the peripheral region of the plasma column.

In a magnetically confined nuclear fusion reactor, the excessive heat load on the plasma facing component (PFC) is a crucial issue. In order to mitigate the heat load, radiation cooling of edge plasma is considered as a possible scheme. We have investigated the impact of 3D edge magnetic field structure on the radiation cooling. It has been found that, the application of external magnetic perturbation field enhances radiation cooling from impurity ions of lower charge states, the enhanced radiation region is located outside of the confinement region, the total heat load on the PFC decreases, but there appears an increased region locally, and that the amount of radiation cooling is independent of the strength of the perturbation field. It is also found that the current transport model of plasma has to be improved in order to reproduce the experimental results.

In this research, 2-dimensional (2D) density fluctuation measurement system using beam emission spectroscopy (BES) has been prepared to obtain MHD and high-frequency turbulent fluctuations. Especially, target of this research is to clarify the oscillations obtained before H-mode transition triggered by high-intensity gas puffing in Heliotron J. The frequency-wavenumber vector has been obtained by the preparation of the 2D-BES system. By applying envelope analysis to the high-frequency density fluctuation observed before the H-mode transition, a clear correlation between the high-frequency fluctuation and the low frequency density fluctuation corresponding to the particle exhaust phenomena has been found. One candidate to explain the phenomena is non-linear coupling between the two fluctuations.

炉心プラズマ解析研究として、独自の輸送解析コードTOTAL(Toroidal Transport Analysis Linkage)による燃料注入のモデリングを発展させた。
