A fluidized-bed biomass drying system based on self-heat recuperation (SHR) technology, which recovers both sensible and latent heat effectively, is developed. The required energy for drying of biomass from 75% (wet basis) of moisture content to 10% was calculated. It was found that this drying system with self-heat recuperation can significantly reduce both primary energy consumption and CO_2 emission compared with other conventional drying systems.

Biomass can be converted into carbon through carbonization processes (pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization) and activation (physical and chemical). The resulting carbon has a high potential as a supercapacitor electrode material due to its porous structure, which supports rapid ion transport. Various methods have been developed to extract or transform biomass into porous carbon. One of the newly developed nanocarbon materials is carbon nanotubes (CNTs) because they have advantages in terms of mechanical, physical, chemical, and electrical properties. This review discusses various kinds of CNT synthesis as activated carbon composites for supercapacitors. The synthesis of these CNTs can be conducted through chemical and physical methods, including arc discharge, laser vaporization, and chemical vapor deposition (CVD). This work reviews various methods of CNT synthesis and analyzes the best methods to be used as composites for supercapacitors for electric vehicles. It is concluded that CVD is the best method for synthesizing CNTs. Its main advantage is that CNTs can be used directly without purification unless the catalyst particles need to be removed. However, further experimental studies are required to find the most optimal conditions for each composite from a type of mesoporous activated carbon and CNTs in terms of preparation and performance outcome.

Transformers are crucial equipment in electrical distribution systems but have a significant potential for failure. Insulation materials, including transformer oil (TO), play a primary role in transformer failures. A fire involving the TO can lead to a large explosion, causing the main tank to rupture and resulting in extensive damage to the entire transformer and the surrounding area. Mineral oil (MO) is the most widely used type due to its availability and relatively low cost compared to other types of oil. However, MO has a critical disadvantage, which is its very low flash point. The low flash point makes MO highly flammable. When the oil fires in an enclosed space, such as a transformer tank, the pressure inside the tank increases, leading to a large explosion. Therefore, research on increasing the flash point of MO is highly necessary. The application of nanotechnology is a promising approach to increasing the flash point of base fluids. Research on the effect of nanoparticles (NPs) on flash points is very limited in the literature; thus, there is significant potential for further research in this field. The majority of studies indicate an increase in flash points with the addition of NPs to MO. There is only one study that shows a decrease in flash point, which is −1.33% compared to MO. From all the reviewed studies, it can be concluded that NPs are a potential solution to increase the flash point of MO. Despite their benefits, NPs require a thorough examination of health and environmental impacts, along with proper waste management, to ensure their advantages.

State-of-the-art integrated processes for hydrogen production from low rank coal (LRC) consisting of drying, gasification, chemical looping, and hydrogenation is proposed based on enhanced process integration (EPI). This paper focuses mainly on the performance of drying module, especially related to energy efficiency during drying. EPI, which is a combination of exergy recovery and process integration, in developed in order to minimize the total exergy destruction throughout the integrated processes. Each process module is designed initially based on exergy recovery to maximize the recirculated heat amount in each process module. Furthermore, the developed process modules are integrated based on process integration, hence the exergy destruction throughout the integrated processes can be minimized. LRC is initially dried in drying module employing exergy recovery and utilizing steam as drying medium. Hot dried-LRC is fed directly to gasification module for conversion producing syngas. The produced syngas is then flowing to chemical looping module to produce hydrogen, CO2 and power. Finally, the produced hydrogen is then stored in liquid organic hydrogen carrier (toluene-methylcyclohexane). On the other hand, the separated CO2 can be sequestered to achieve a clean coal conversion. From process calculation, the proposed drying module shows very high energy efficiency, which is about one sixth to which is required in drying with conventional heat recovery.

An advanced energy saving system with air as a drying medium was proposed based on self-heat recuperation technology in this work. Results show that energy consumption could be reduced to 1/4-1/6 of a conventional heat-recovery dryer. Finally, it is confirmed that the proposed drying system achieves stable performance in the experiments.

Fluidized-bed biomass drying based on self-heat recuperation (SHR) technology recovering both sensible and latent heat effectively is developed. The energy efficiency of the proposed technology is evaluated and compared to the vapor recompression (VRC) based drying. As the result, it is significant that the proposed system can reduce the energy consumption to about 2/3 that is required in VRC based drying.

In this study, two technologies, exergy recovery and process integration, are considered simultaneously, and an original energy conversion system specialized for industrial waste biomass is proposed. In order to achieve highly efficient energy conversion, chemical looping with three reactors is introduced as the main conversion technology. The overall process is constructed and optimized, and relevant operating parameters are clarified. Modeling of the chemical looping reaction in conducted to clarify the reduction and oxidation reaction mechanisms and identify the appropriate operating conditions. In addition, the results of experiments and modularization are used as the main input data to integrate the entire process. The proposed system can achieve a high energy efficiency of about 60%, and from the results of the economic evaluation, the system is considered promising. <BR> Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)
