This article reports the influence of annealing treatment on magnetic properties of submicron sized amorphous Fe–Co–B particles synthesized by an aqueous solution reduction method. The structure of Fe–Co–B particles was mainly amorphous for the annealing temperature less than 250 °C, a precipitation of bcc phase from the amorphous at the annealing temperature of 300 °C, and further transferred to the bcc structure at the annealing temperature above 350 °C. Their static magnetic properties such as saturation magnetization and coercivity were improved markedly at lower annealing temperatures, compared to those of as-synthesized particles, due to the enhancement of short-range order and the relaxation of internal stress. The imaginary part of complex permeability was maintained as almost zero in the frequency range of 0.3–0.5 GHz, meaning the suppression of eddy current. Therefore, these results suggest that the appropriate annealing treatment for submicron sized amorphous Fe–Co–B particles has considerable potential to develop the constituent materials of the next-generation magnetic elements.

This paper reports the core loss of soft magnetic composite toroidal cores consisting of submicron-sized amorphous Fe–B particles with spherical shape synthesized by an aqueous reduction reaction method. The core loss of Fe–B composite cores was as low as 0.0015 J/m3 in the frequency range of 10 kHz to 4 MHz at a maximum magnetic flux density Bm of 1 mT, meaning that the eddy current loss can be suppressed. This result can be derived from a combination of the reduction of the particle size, amorphous structure and their relatively higher resistivity. In contrast to Fe–B particles, the toroidal core consisting of the commercial carbonyl iron particles showed the increase of core loss at the frequency more than 200 kHz, which may be attributed to the increment of eddy current loss originating from their relatively larger particle size and decrement of resistivity induced by particle coarse after compaction. Therefore, these results suggest that submicron-sized amorphous Fe–B particles is one of the candidate materials for the next-generation magnetic passive components in the frequency range of MHz.

The influence of annealing temperature on the structure and magnetic properties of 10 μm-thick Fe-1, 2, and 3 wt. %Si foils was investigated. The coercivity of each foil decreased and its relative permeability increased as the annealing temperature increased, meaning the improvement of soft magnetic properties of these foils. The core loss of each foil at 100 kHz under a maximum magnetic flux density of 500 mT showed a decrease intendency with the increase of annealing temperature, owing to the suppression of the hysteresis loss by grain growth after annealing. Furthermore, from the loss separation of each foil, it was found that the eddy current loss slightly decreased and excess loss tend to increase with the increase of annealing temperature regardless of Si content. Therefore, these results suggest that an appropriate annealing temperature can improve the magnetic properties and core loss of ultra-thin Fe–Si foils, making them applicable as magnetic materials for next generation passive components in the frequency range up to several hundreds kHz.

Abstract This paper reports change in the structure and magnetic properties of ultra-thin electrolytic Fe ribbons with the annealing temperature between 873-1173 K. The structure of the ribbon was polycrystalline with the bcc phase regardless of the annealing temperature, while the crystal orientation changed from (200) and/or (211) to random as the annealing temperature increased. As for magnetic properties of the ribbons, their saturation magnetization remained almost constant for all annealing temperatures except 873 K, and their core loss did not change in the measured frequency less than 20 kHz regardless of the annealing temperature. Therefore, these results suggest that the ultra-thin electrolytic Fe ribbons are one of the candidates as the core materials in the frequency range below several tens kHz.

Abstract We present a methodology for characterizing the millimeter-wave properties of ultra-lightweight absorbers composed of single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in a cellulose-based aerogel matrix, aiming to optimize process condition. The absorbers were evaluated over the frequency ranges of 22-42 GHz and 57-90 GHz using the free-space method. Effective permittivity and conductivity were estimated by fitting a transmission-line model to the measured S-parameters. The result reveals that the real part of permittivity agrees with the Maxwell-Garnett mixing rule, and the effective conductivity is directly proportional to the CNT content. These findings confirm that the CNTs are well-dispersed and electrically isolated. Furthermore, the electromagnetic simulations using the estimated parameters indicated that Joule loss, rather than dielectric loss, is the dominant absorption mechanism. These results propose a design principle: absorption performance can be controlled by tuning CNT content, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed methodology to support developing composite material design.

This paper reports the influence of rare-earth (RE) doping on static and dynamic magnetic properties of 50-nm-thick Fe-Ga films grown on a glass substrate. With the addition of RE elements, the magnetic softness of Fe-Ga films improved at higher RE content, which might be attributed to the induction of in-plane uniaxial anisotropy by RE doping. As for the dynamic properties of Fe-Ga-RE films, an overall increased effective in-plane damping constant (α//,eff) were observed as the increase of RE content, except for a decreased α//,eff from 0.0228 to 0.0151 at low RE contents. These results suggest that the addition of RE could induce tunable magnetic properties in Fe-Ga films, making resultant Fe-Ga-RE films as one of the promising candidates for the sensing applications and high frequency microwave magnetic devices.

This paper reports the effect of annealing speed on the structure, and magnetic properties of submicron sized amorphous Fe-B particles synthesized by a chemical reduction method. The shape of the synthesized particles was spherical, and their median size became approximately 708 nm. The DSC curve of the particles showed a crystallization temperature of 463 °C. The structure of the particles maintained an amorphous state at an annealing speed of less than 100 °C /min, while α-Fe and Fe3B coexisted at an annealing speed of 200–400°C/min. As the speed increased up to 100°C/min, the saturation magnetization and the intrinsic permeability of the particles increased to 153 emu/g and 17, respectively, and their coercivity decreased to 23 Oe. These results demonstrate that the magnetic properties of Fe-B particles can be improved markedly by the relaxation of internal stress in the particles as the range of annealing speed between 50-100 °C /min below crystallization temperature.

In order to planarize the diamond surface at atomic scale, we investigated the mechanism of low energy ion beam generation using a photoemission-assisted plasma ion source. It was found that photoelectrons are more likely to be emitted by adsorption of hydrogen on the diamond surface and a low energy ion beam suitable for surface planarization can be generated. In addition, instead of expensive diamond substrates, planarization demonstration experiments using inexpensive diamond like carbon (DLC) film was carried out, and the growth mechanism of DLC was clarified.
