    Abstract Energy-efficient and selective hydrocarbon reforming techniques are crucial for a sustainable future. This study develops a highly active and selective NiO/CeO 2 oxygen carrier (OC) for low-temperature chemical looping partial oxidation of methane and water splitting. By using cubic CeO 2 (cCeO 2 ) as support and precisely tailoring the size and electronic structure of Ni active sites, simultaneous low-temperature CH 4 activation and high syngas selectivity (CH 4 -to-syngas selectivity: > 98.5%) were achieved, effectively suppressing CH 4 cracking and complete oxidation. The as-synthesized NiO/cCeO 2 OCs operate efficiently at 600 °C, significantly lower than the conventional temperature, 800–900 °C. Nearly pure H 2 is produced in the water splitting step. High selectivity eliminates the need for additional gas separation and purification units. It is noteworthy that reaction-driven OC activation pretreatment plays a significant role in achieving the stable low-temperature activity, which leads to the moderate aggregation (10–20 nm) of Ni species and transforms Ni 2+ from a low-spin state into a high-spin state. The OC structural evolution during reaction, key active sites responsible for water splitting, and the support effect are systematically investigated. The highly precise microstructural manipulation strategies outlined here are expected to guide further advancements in high-performance low-temperature OCs for chemical looping processes.

    Abstract Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) has demonstrated great potential in photochemical, electrochemical, and organic catalysis. Developing surfactant‐free and scalable synthesis methods is essential for its real application. Conventional batch methods often suffer from inconsistent product quality and limited scalability. In this work, an efficient continuous microflow synthesis system is developed, and the design principles of the flow synthesis system are systematically elucidated. A kinetic control strategy on the millisecond‐to‐second timescale is proposed to precisely regulate intermediate size and dynamic structural evolution without using surfactants, thereby adjusting particle size and exposed crystal facets, which transformed the conventional thermodynamic control paradigm. Specifically, varying the interval time (0.02→6 s) between precipitant (sodium hydroxide, NaOH) and reductant (ascorbic acid, AA) addition significantly altered nanocube size (75→196 nm), while reversing the feeding sequence (AA before NaOH) led to much smaller nanocubes (76→14 nm) due to changes in the microenvironments for particle formation. Moreover, Cu 2 O polyhedrons exhibited a greater number of exposed facets at shorter residence times, indicating a non‐equilibrium state from the thermodynamic perspective. It is expected that such a continuous microflow synthesis system can be directly integrated with downstream catalytic processes to fully exploit the activity of Cu 2 O.

    We propose a compressed ilmenite-hematite solid solution as a new potential source of Earth's magnetic anomalies. The 0.5FeTiO3·0.5Fe2O3 solid solution compressed by collision synthesis with super-high-energy ball milling showed a decrease in molar volume of approximately 1.8%. Consequently, the sample showed a saturation magnetization of 1.5 ampere square meter per kilogram (Am2/kg) at 300 kelvin, a Curie temperature of 990 kelvin, and a magnetic exchange bias below 100 kelvin, e.g., 1.7 × 105 ampere per meter at 60 kelvin. Ilmenite-hematite solid solutions are common mineral systems in most mafic igneous and metamorphic rocks, and the compressive force in the rocks is generated by the high pressure in the upper mantle or by shock events with high pressure such as the collision of these rocks with meteorites. Therefore, we consider that the compressed ilmenite-hematite solid solution is an additional candidate source of other planetary magnetic anomalies including those in the Moon and Earth.

    Titania (TiO2) has attracted much attention recently for reducing bacterial diseases by the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) under UV irradiation. However, demand for higher photocatalytic activity due to higher recombination of electron and hole remains. The aims of this study were to make titania with higher antibacterial property and show the mechanisms of the bactericidal effect. In this study, we hydrothermally synthesized TiO2 nanosheets (NS) with highly-oriented structures. Samples were divided into five groups, depending on the fluorine/titanium ratio in the raw material, namely NS1.0, NS1.2, NS1.5, NS1.8, and NS2.0. Facet ratio and nanosheet size increased with an increase of fluorine/titanium ratio. The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanosheet was assessed by the generation of ROS. Hydroxyl radicals and superoxides were generated efficiently by ultraviolet light irradiation on NS1.5 and NS1.0, respectively. Antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans was assessed in the presence and absence of UV irradiation; NS1.0 showed superior antibacterial properties compared to commercially available TiO2 nanoparticles, under both conditions, due to the oxidation of intracellular components and cell membrane. These results together suggested TiO2 nanosheet induced bacterial cell death by oxidation, and TiO2 facet engineering resulted in enhancement of both photocatalytic and antibacterial activities of TiO2.

    This review reports a new method for the fabrication of ordered metallic nanostructures such as nanowire, nanogrids and nanoparticles based on the use of DNA templates. DNA has negative charge on phosphate groups, so that the DNA conformation can be attempted to mineralize metals e. g., palladium (Pd) on its atructure at a relatively high concentration of metals. We were successful in the formation of unique Pd nanoparticles by controlling reductive reaction. We showed the utilization of the Pd nanoparticles for the highly-sensitive hydrogen sensor.

    This paper describes specific features of supercritical hydrothermal synthesis method of nanoparticles. In the method, metal salt aqueous solution is mixed with high temperature water to rapidly increase the temperature of the metal salt solution and thus reduce the reactions and crystallizations during the heating up period. By using this method, we succeeded in the continuous and rapid production of nano meter size single crystals. Specific features of this method is l) rapid nanoparticles production, 2) morphology control with a little change of temperature or pressure, 3) control of oxidation state by introducing oxygen or hydrogen gas, and 4) highly crystallized single crystal formation. By introducing organic reagents in the reaction atmosphere, organic-inorganic fused materials could be synthesized. For the rational design of this process, a thermo^fluid model combined with nucleation and particle growth theory has been developed.

    In situ production and surface modification of cobalt oxide nanoparticles and titanium oxide nanoparticles were carried out by hydrothermal synthesis in subcritical and supercritical water condition at 200, 300 and 400°C. In order to modify the surface of these metal oxides, several modifiers as CH3(CH2)5OH, CH3(CH2)4CHO, CH3(CH2)4COOH and CH3(CH2)5NH2 were examined. By using the Fourier transform infrared spectra for investigation of modified surfaces, it was found that, these modifiers can modify the surface of cobalt oxide nanoparticles. The surface of titanium oxide nanoparticles are also modified by these reagents. Crystalline structure and size of synthesized nanoparticles were studied by using X-ray diffractometer patterns and transmission electron microscopy, respectively.

    Highly selective base-pairing rules in DNA can be utilized as a tool for forming nano architecture. Holliday Junction, where two different DNA double strands intersect and replace each complement strand, is an important artificial motif for forming two-dimensional "plane" conformation of DNA. In this study, we controlled the growth of the DNA "plane" conformation by changing temperature. A set of DNA single chains were cooled from 90°C to 4°C for10 minutes, to form the DNA "plane" conformation. The influence of the cooling procedure on the DNA conformation was observed by AFM (atomic force microscope), and it is found that the DNA "plane" conformation is strongly dependent on the cooling process. Further, we assembled gold nano particle using the DNA conformation, and observed the assembly of gold nano particle on the DNA conformation by AFM and TEM (transmission electron microscopy).

    Herein a unique mechanochemical approach to produce sophisticated nanocarbons is reported. It is demonstrated that unique carbon nanostructures, including carbon nanotubes, carbon onions, and new carbon nanorings are synthesized by super-high-energy ball milling of steel balls. It is considered that the gas-phase reaction takes place around the surface of steel balls under local high temperatures induced by the collision energy in super-high-energy ball milling, which results in phase separated unique nanocarbons. This study also shows the mechanochemical synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles such as ilmenite with a high-temperature and high-pressure phase by the super-high-energy ball milling.

    We report a novel approach to tailor-made inorganic nanocrystals by means of organic ligand-assisted liquid phase reaction. We also report a novel mechanochemical approach to unique carbon nanostructures, including carbon nanotubes, carbon onions, and new carbon nanorings by the high-speed ball-milling process.
