    In disaster-affected areas, the impact of land use changes from the past to the present on disaster risk is often discussed, but most of these observations are qualitative. However, quantitative analysis could provide valuable information for disaster prevention and mitigation. This study aims to analyze the impact of land use changes through a series of heavy rainfall disaster simulations. Past and present models of a real region that experienced an extreme rainfall disaster were prepared, with flooding and landslides represented in the simulations. The results quantitatively demonstrated that, to reduce flood damage effectively, it is essential not only to implement basin maintenance, but also to prioritize safety in residential area selection and to proceed with land development in a careful manner. Finally, the potential advantages and limitations of the proposed approach are discussed.

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Slope stability analysis based on the limit equilibrium theory has been widely employed in practice. However, the application of the three-dimensional (3D) limit equilibrium method (LEM) for multiple slopes over a large area has not been extensively discussed. In this study, a 3D LEMs-based slope stability analysis was conducted over a large area with actual terrain data under the conditions of shallow failures that occur during heavy rainfall events. The results confirmed that the three different methods have similar trends in receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves though each evaluated factor of safety is different. In other words, under the conditions of shallow landslides, the Hovland method, which has the lowest computational cost among 3D LEMs, can produce results comparable to those of more advanced methods only by changing the threshold of the factor of safety.</jats:p>
