Abstract The < 110 > directional solidification of silicon under varying overall temperature gradients was investigated using an in situ observation system. The growth velocity of an atomically rough interface was found to decrease with increasing temperature gradient. A theoretical model of the thermal field taking undercooling into account was developed to describe this phenomenon and was demonstrated to be valid. The results of this work indicate that the reported linear relationship between growth velocity (V) and undercooling (ΔT), given by V (mm s−1) = 120ΔT (K), is most accurate in the case of a rough interface. In the case that the overall temperature gradient is small, the melting point isotherm moves rapidly such that it becomes more difficult for the interface to keep pace with the isotherm compared with a large temperature gradient. This effect leads to increased undercooling at the interface and consequently a rapid growth velocity. Thermal field calculations confirm that a rapid increase in the ratio of the temperature gradient in the crystal to that in the melt should increase the latent heat release, again providing a more rapid growth velocity.

The defect structures of impurity-doped congruent lithium niobates (c-LN) were investigated by combining lattice constant measurements with thermodynamic analyses. On the basis of the "Li site vacancy model", six kinds of defect structures in impurity-doped c-LN are possible. Using thermodynamic constraints, these can be narrowed down to two kinds. The thermodynamic analyses showed impurities are located at only the Li or Nb site in the range where antisite niobium exists. Based on the thermodynamic analyses, lattice constant measurement revealed that divalent and trivalent impurities were located at Li sites in LN, whereas tetravalent impurities were located at Nb sites. This result provides good clues for controlling intrinsic point defects.

To obtain high quality colloidal crystals, control of impurity behavior during crystallization is required. We have investigated impurity partitioning quantitatively for the colloidal crystal. We applied conventional partition model of normal crystal growth such as Thurmond and Struthers model and Burton Prim Slichter (BPS) model to colloidal crystal growth, which provides equilibrium partition coefficient (k0). Discussion on the basis of free energy derived from volume fraction of colloidal particles well account for variation of k0s for impurity of different size. In-situ observation revealed detailed partition behavior, including orientation-dependency, the effect of the grain boundary, and the morphology of solid-liquid interface. These new findings contribute to constructing methodology for growing high quality colloidal crystal as well as understanding general concept of partitioning that takes place during phase transition.

We carried out a numerical simulation of shock-wave heating event in early solar system. A shock wave heats and evaporates micron-sized silicate dust particles and generates a dust vapor. We found that the dust vapor cools to be supersaturated behind the shock front. The typical size and the morphology of condensates were discussed based on the classical nucleation theory.

Fine particles of magnetite frequently occur in some primitive meteorites which experienced aqueous alteration. We newly found that the colloidal crystals composed of 〜150nm diameter of magnetite particles have bcc structure and 200nm have fcc structure. The fcc colloidal magnetite crystals consist entirely of anomalous morphology. The structure of colloidal crystal dependent on the size and morphology could reflect the formation environments on the immature parental body with ice-water evaporation.

Formation process of matrix olivine surface microtopography was experimentally simulated Few μm sized 2-dimentional nucleation growth islands were observed on the surface. It was thought that the difference of the shape of step between sharp and rough depends on whether supersaturation excess the critical supersaturation or not Our experiment indicates that some matrix olivine remained the record that they cooled rapidly more than 500K/sec.

Growth steps on the olivine (001) were observed in the matrix of a primitive carbonaceous chondrite using FE-SEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope) and AFM (Atomic Force Microscope). These steps are regarded to be formed at first from vapor and then from melt via liquid phase (VLS), which indicates that early solar nebula was very dynamic condition such as generating locally rapid heating or cooling.

Growth steps on the olivine (001) were observed in the matrix of a primitive carbonaceous chondrite using FE-SEM (Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope) and AFM (Atomic Force Microscope). The lowest step height was measured to be 1.2nm which approximately corresponds to double of the elementary steps (0.59nm) on the (001). Such a step could be developed during vapor-growth in the free space. Thus, microtopography can evaluate the formation conditions of cosmic materials which were formed at 4.6 billions years ago.

To understand the environment of the early solar system, we have investigated the relation between the growth condition and dust morphology. The aggregation behaviors of SiO_2 glass indicate that high oxygen fugacity increases the interfacial free energy of the dust particles. The forsterite morphology indicates that the dust condensation condition in the early solar system was about 200 K below from its equilibrium temperature.

Colloidal crystals are expected to be used for innovative optical devices such as photonic crystals. The detailed mechanisms of nucleation and crystal growth of colloidal crystals have been clarified by in-situ observation, which is critical for growing high-quality crystals. We have succeeded in understanding the fundamental phenomena of crystal growth, such as two-dimensional nucleation on the cover glass and on the crystal surface, relation between step velocity and kink formation mechanism. In addition, we found an important growth mode in binary colloidal crystals consisting of two particles with different sizes, which can be used to control the structure and crystallization phase.

A colloidal crystal, periodic array of colloidal particles, is a promising material that can be applied to various novel functional devices such as photonic crystals. However, there are some issues to be overcome for practical application, an impurity incorporation is one of critical problem. The detailed mechanism of impurity partitioning during colloidal crystallization has been revealed by using fluorescent particles in the present study. Orientation-dependent impurity partitioning and effect of grain boundary on partitioning was investigated quantitatively. These new findings significantly contribute to the control of impurity during colloidal crystallization.

We have succeeded in the growth of lithium tetraborate with periodic twin structure forming during growth by applying an electric field or manipulating a growth orientation relative to the twin boundary. Since lithium tetraborate is not ferroelectric, the conventional method for the formation of the quasi-phase matching structure (QPM) is not possible. By revealing the formation mechanism of (100) and (010) twins, we managed alternative twin formation with these orientations, which made the periodic twin structure with small period. This structure can be served as a QPM structure and the secondary harmonic generation of Nd:YAG laser was successfully obtained. It is a remarkable result that the QPM formation is possible for non-ferroelectric material.

A new LiNbO_3 bulk crystal (cs-MgO : LiNbO_3)has been developed by including MgO combined with vacancy and the crystal successfully has the congruent point coincident with the stoichiometric point. Activities of all crystal-constituent elements including Mg and vacancy are unity. The cs-MgO : LiNbO_3 has a much more homogeneous composition than the conventional LiNbO_3 crystals and its SHG conversion efficiency is comparable to the optimum value reported.
