Abstract In materials science, we have been increasing the number of constituent elements in an alloy and compounds to improve their properties. For example, in magnetism and spintronics, ternary alloys, such as NdFeB and CoFeB have been developed and widely used in permanent magnets and memories/sensors, respectively. It has now been considered to be a time to add more elements to further explore their horizon. For such a complicated development, a manual systematic study is no longer practical, leading to the utilisation of machine learning to predict a candidate. These candidates can then be additionally screened by ab initio calculations before experimental confirmation, which can be performed routinely. Additional use of quantum annealing may also broaden the adoptability of machine learning on the materials development. In this perspective, we plan to offer a standardised process for such a development with some requirements for improvement.

We observed spin-dependent tunneling in Co90Fe10/AlOx/Co90Fe10/AlOx/Co90Fe10 ferromagnetic double tunnel junctions. A middle Co90Fe10 layer, which is inserted between two AlOx layers, is discontinuous due to the difference in the surface energy of these layers. The average diameter of Co90Fe10 particles was estimated to be 2.0-4.5 nm from cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. At low temperature (< 50 K), a Coulomb gap is observed in current-voltage (I-V) curves, and the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio within the gap enhances significantly with decreasing temperature, which indicates that the dominant electron transport is inelastic co-tunneling within the Coulomb gap. These observations in a ferromagnetic tunnel junction with 2-dimensional magnetic nano-particle layer insertion accord well with theoretical predictions by Takahashi and Maekawa [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1758 (1998)].

    More details Close

We successfully grew Co2Cr1-xFexAl full Heusler films (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) with the L21 structure onto GaAs(001) substrates by achieving stoichiometry in an ultrahigh-vacuum molecular beam epitaxy chamber. The films develop epitaxial crystallinity with the relationship of Co2Cr1-xFexAl(001)‹110›||GaAs(001)‹110›, which induces very strong uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy, except for x = 0. For x = 1, in particular, the film is almost a single phase and its magnetic moment per formula unit exhibits Slater-Pauling behavior. Films of this type were used to fabricate magnetic tunnel junctions with 8.8% and 4.9% tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) ratios at room temperature for x = 1 with an Al-O tunnel barrier and x = 0.6 with a MgO barrier, respectively. The TMR ratio can be further enhanced by both realizing an L21 single phase and eliminating lattice distortion.

Polar magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements on epitaxial Cu/22ACo/0-49Å Cu/53Å Ni/Cu/Si(001) structures reveal that the Ni magnetisation is aligned in-plane for zero Cu spacer layer thickness and becomes increasingly aligned out-of plane with increasing Cu spacer layer thickness, whereas an in-plane remanence for Co is always observed. Polarised neutron reflection (PNR) measurements at room temperature yield at room temperature a slightly reduced magnetisation of 1.57 ± 0.08μB for Co and 0.50 ± 0.04μB for Ni for a Cu/22Å Co/10Å Cu/53Å Ni/Cu/Si(001) structure. PNR measurements yield also a reduced in-plane remanence for both Co and Ni. This could suggest either a canted magnetisation or multidomain state at remanence. The Latter mechanism is supported by magnetic force microscopy images.

The martensitic structure and magnetic domain structure of Fe1-xNix system (0.30≤x≤0.32) were investigated by means of non-contact atomic force microscopy and magnetic force microscopy. The martensite has a stripe domain structure whose period decreases with the Ni composition. The magnetic anisotropy constant in the martensite was estimated to be 2×104 J/m3, whose magnitude is the same order as that of Fe or Ni metal.

The martensitic structure and magnetic domain structure of Fe0.75Pt0.25 were investigated by means of noncontact atomic force microscope (NC-AFM) and magnetic force microscope (MFM). The lattice constant and the crystalline structure were determined by X-ray diffactometry. It was found that there exist two types of martensitic structures in Fe0.75Pt0.25. This fact can be explained by a combination of the habit planes of twinning deformation. The magnetic stripe domain structures on the martensites were observed. The relationship between the martensitic and the magnetic structure of Fe0.75Pt0.25 was determined.
