Abstract Contact electrification, or triboelectrification, is a charging mechanism at the liquid–solid interface, inspiring water-droplet triboelectric nanogenerators. This study reveals a flow-coupled charge removal effect during charging by testing grounded and insulated metal plates under high-speed nanodroplet spraying. Under grounded conditions, capturing the instantaneous charge transfer, the on-plate current has a maximum at a nozzle-to-plate distance of 1 mm (37.5 nA for aluminum and −35.9 nA for copper) and decreases monotonically with distance. The current of reflected flow after impingement exhibits opposite polarity but a similar distance-dependent trend, indicating charge separation. The electrostatic elimination rate shows the same distance dependence, with a maximum of −5000 V s –1 at 1 mm. In contrast, under insulated conditions as a steady state, the surface potential exhibits a non-monotonic dependence on distance, peaking at 5 mm (2531 V for aluminum and −2889 V for copper). At 1 mm, the lower steady-state potential of −1868 V, compared with the 5000 V s –1 charging rate, indicates partial charge removal during impingement. Moreover, the reflected-flow current retains the same polarity and a similar trend to the surface potential, indicating charges carried away by the impinging flow. Therefore, the net charge on the insulated plate arises from both charge generation and removal, which together determine the steady-state charging behavior under high-speed nanodroplet impingement, revealing a flow-coupled charging in a steady state.

This study explores the mechanism of charge generation when high-speed water nanodroplets impact metal surfaces. Using a condensation-based nanodroplet generator, we measured the electric potential and current upon droplet collisions with various metals. Results showed a clear dependence on metal type, with charge polarity and magnitude following a descending trend from positive to negative: Pb > Al > Fe > Cu > Sn. The observed trends correspond strongly with the triboelectric series, indicating that triboelectric charging is the primary charge generation mechanism. Other factors, such as electrochemical reactions, thermoelectric effects, wettability, and pre-existing droplet charge, showed limited influence. These findings not only address a fundamental gap in the understanding of droplet-induced electrification at the nanoscale but also lay the groundwork for advanced applications in charge-controlled nanodroplet technologies.

High-temperature, high-pressure steam plays a critical role in industrial applications such as sterilization, power generation, and chemical processing. However, the presence of non-condensable gases (NCGs), such as air, can impede heat transfer, lower vapor pressure, and compromise the efficiency of processes like sterilization. This study proposes a novel real-time detection method for NCGs using a discharge-based probe near a cooling area. By monitoring emission intensities of nitrogen gas (a representative NCG) at a benchmark wavelength of 500 nm, the accumulation and release dynamics of NCGs under varying temperature conditions were analyzed. The experimental results demonstrated that the emission intensity trends correlated with NCG concentration difference caused by condensation, validating the probe’s ability to effectively detect and quantify NCGs. This approach not only enables precise monitoring of steam purity but also offers insights into collecting the NCGs in steam-based processes for enhanced safety and efficiency.

Abstract Rock fragmentation by high-voltage pulsed discharge (RHPD) has gained significant attention in various engineering fields, yet the mechanism of rock fracture induced by the instantaneous high temperature of plasma remains insufficiently quantified. This study establishes a numerical model of thermomechanical damage in rocks under RHPD conditions, analyzes the time evolution of plasma temperature at different fragmentation distances, and proposes a method for calculating the time response of plasma temperature. Based on the discrete element model (DEM), the study simulates the thermal diffusion and thermally induced fracture process inside the rock under the instantaneous high temperature of plasma, revealing the multi-field coupling fracture mechanism induced by high-voltage pulses. The results indicate that plasma-induced high temperatures cause localized mineral particles inside the rock to heat up. However, due to the inherent physical properties of the rock, the range and magnitude of temperature changes remain limited. The bonding between minerals, the presence of voids, and the rock’s low thermal expansion coefficient, low thermal conductivity, and high specific heat capacity collectively result in low heat transfer efficiency, making the effect of transient thermal loading on rock fracture negligible. Even under extreme thermal loading conditions (80000 K, 100 μs), although the range of temperature change increases and a small number of fractures are generated, the contribution of thermomechanical damage remains much smaller than that of shockwave-induced fracturing. The findings of this study enhance the understanding of thermomechanical coupling mechanisms in RHPD and provide a reference for the development of multi-phase medium coupling models.

ABSTRACT Although the development of disinfection technologies with novel mechanisms has stagnated, we demonstrate the bactericidal effects and mechanisms of high-speed nanodroplet generation technology. The first development of this technology in 2017 gushes out a water droplet of 10 nm in size at 50 m/s; however, the target surface does not become completely wet. Nanodroplets were exposed to biofilm models of Staphylococcus aureus , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Escherichia coli , and Serratia marcescens . This phenomenon was verified when the nanodroplets collide with the surface of the bacteria at an impact pressure of ~75 MPa. S. aureus was exposed to nanodroplets for 30 seconds at 75 MPa, which exploded the bacterial body and completely sterilized. Eighteen MPa damaged the bacterial surface, causing peptidoglycan leakage. S. aureus was repaired and survives in this state. In contrast, in Gram-negative bacteria, nanodroplets with 18 MPa penetrated some biofilm-forming bacteria but did not hit all of them, and the viable count was not significantly reduced. Although all three bacterial species were completely sterilized at 75 MPa, the disinfectant effect was affected by the biomass of the biofilm formed. In summary, our findings prove that nanodroplets at 18 MPa on the bacterial surface were ineffective in killing bacteria, whereas at 75 MPa, all four bacterial species were completely sterilized. The disinfection mechanism involved a high-velocity collision of nanodroplets with the bacteria, physically destroying them. Our results showed that disinfection using this technology could be an innovative method that is completely different from existing disinfection techniques. IMPORTANCE Although existing disinfection techniques demonstrate bactericidal effects through chemical reactions, concerns regarding human toxicity and environmental contamination have been raised. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first in the world to reveal that the use of this technology, with nanodroplets of less than 100 nm, can destroy and sterilize bacterial cells by colliding with biofilm-forming bacteria at 75 MPa. Furthermore, because this technology uses only water, it can solve the problems of human toxicity and environmental contamination caused by existing disinfection techniques. Because of its minimal water usage, it can be employed for sanitation worldwide without being limited to specific regions. Our report proposes an unprecedented physical disinfection approach that utilizes a high-speed nanodroplet generation technology.

Abstract Plasma medicine is a novel field of research that has the potential in life sciences, including cancer treatment. It has been believed that all of these potential applications depend on the chemical factor of the plasma. However, the electrical factors that are produced simultaneously with the chemical factors have not been researched thoroughly. To assess the effect of plasma on the response of cells, a system that enables simultaneous comparison of the effects of chemical and electrical factors of plasma with equal electricity was invented. This system separates the polarity of plasma and isolates the chemical species from the electric stimulation. Using this system, HT-1080 cells were exposed to plasma for 10 min, 1 h, and 24 h. The 10 min plasma treatment showed a clear difference in the polarity of plasma, where cells under exposure to positive plasma died while cells in other conditions survived. An hour of plasma treatment affected the cells under the negative plasma, where the cell viability was reduced to half. Meanwhile, the electric stimulation did not affect the cell viability but did alter the cell membrane. Collectively, this study demonstrates the differential effects of three factors (electric factor, positive plasma, negative plasma) under the same condition: both the electrical and chemical effects of plasma-generated stimuli with equal amounts of electricity were successfully observed.

Abstract Rock fragmentation by high-voltage pulsed discharge (RHPD) is widely utilized in resource recovery and energy extraction due to its low energy consumption and high efficiency. However, observing the plasma development process during RHPD presents challenges, and the frequency dependence of dielectric properties further complicates plasma path prediction and the analysis of fracturing properties in the axial direction of the plasma. To address these issues, we analyzed the development properties of plasma within rocks and established a segmented breakdown criterion that considered the propagation velocity of plasma. Additionally, utilizing a transient electromagnetic field model and a particle flow model (PFM), we established a multi-physics field model and proposed a predictive method for the plasma path in a rock–liquid combination environment. This allows for the quantification of the velocity, potential, and length of the plasma. Furthermore, we computed the time response of shock waves and analyzed the loading mechanism of shock waves. Based on the spatial distribution of plasma, the PFM was applied to simulate the fracturing properties of rocks under shock wave loading. Finally, we established a comprehensive experimental platform for RHPD and conducted three-dimensional reconstructions of the fractured area to validate the accuracy of plasma path prediction methods and fracturing properties analysis. This study significantly advances plasma development theory and provides insights for optimizing rock fragmentation efficiency.

Abstract Rock breaking by high-voltage pulse discharge (rock breaking by high-voltage pulse discharge, RHPD) is an efficient technology for rock breaking. A single discharge will lead to the initiation or expansion of cracks inside the rock, and the expansion of cracks after multiple discharges will lead to the destabilization of the rock and finally produce a fractured zone. Because of the difficulty in quantifying the spatial damage characteristics of the fractured zone, in this paper, based on the discrete element method and theoretical analysis, the spatial damage model (spatial damage model, SDM) of rock is established. For a typical liquid-solid combination, from the microscopic point of view, the damage characteristics of the fractured zone on the radial cross-section of the plasma are quantified. The changing characteristics of the damage characteristics were analyzed for multiple discharges. In addition, an experimental platform has been built, and the accuracy of the SDM has been verified by the experimental results. The results show that the increase in the discharge distance will improve the deposition energy and crushing effect, and will also improve the accuracy of the model. The findings of this paper provide a technical reserve for the application of RHPD.

This study presents a general methodology and an experimental approach to identify the gas components within laser-induced cavitation bubbles. A needle electrode inside the cavitation bubble, which introduces low electric energy into the bubble, produces a homogenous plasma discharge inside the vapor cavity. The primary bubble dynamics remain identical while the rebound bubble becomes about twice as large when a discharge is applied. The effect of non-condensable gases and the electric charge on bubble dynamics is explored theoretically, and the role of the electric charge is found to be significant. Optical emission spectroscopy reveals the evolution of emission lines from gases inside bubbles. H lines and OH lines are persistently observed in all cases, providing a dominant presence of water vapor. The results also confirm that the gases, which are initially present in the water rather than transported from the water, contribute to the optical emission characteristics with different dissolved gases.

To analyze the damage characteristics of rocks during high-voltage pulse fragmentation (HVPF), two kinds of loads, shockwave and cavity, are determined by optical observation, and the pressure–time characteristics of these two and their mechanism of damage to rocks in mesoscopic view are analyzed. A model of dynamic damage characteristics of brittle rock under multiple loads is established, which includes numerical calculation and discrete element simulation. In the discrete element simulation, the rock is simplified as a circular region without reflection boundary with a certain size of the circular hole inside, and the grains in the region are discretized as rigid spheres with a definite bonding relationship. The shockwave is considered the time-varying pressure loaded to the grains of the circular hole, and the cavity is considered the quasi-static pressure loaded to the grains on both sides of the fracture. The results of the model show that shear cracks and tensile cracks are produced during the shockwave action, but tensile cracks are predominant. The shockwave acts as a preload for the expansion of cracks, and the damage radius is small. Most of the cracks in HVPF are caused by the cavity. A comparison of the numerical calculation results with the discrete element simulation results shows that the model can describe the distribution characteristics of cracks under multiple loads, which lays a foundation for further analysis of the internal mechanism of HVPF.

The interventional treatment of cerebral aneurysm requires hemodynamics to provide proper guidance. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is gradually used in calculating cerebral aneurysm hemodynamics before and after flow-diverting (FD) stent placement. However, the complex operation (such as the construction and placement simulation of fully resolved or porous-medium FD stent) and high computational cost of CFD hinder its application. To solve these problems, we applied aneurysm hemodynamics point cloud data sets and a deep learning network with double input and sampling channels. The flexible point cloud format can represent the geometry and flow distribution of different aneurysms before and after FD stent (represented by porous medium layer) placement with high resolution. The proposed network can directly analyze the relationship between aneurysm geometry and internal hemodynamics, to further realize the flow field prediction and avoid the complex operation of CFD. Statistical analysis shows that the prediction results of hemodynamics by our deep learning method are consistent with the CFD method (error function <13%), but the calculation time is significantly reduced 1,800 times. This study develops a novel deep learning method that can accurately predict the hemodynamics of different cerebral aneurysms before and after FD stent placement with low computational cost and simple operation processes.
