Abstract The elucidation of the energy dissipation process is crucial for understanding various phenomena occurring in nature. Yet, the vibrational relaxation and its timescale at the water interface, where the hydrogen-bonding network is truncated, are not well understood and are still under debate. In the present study, we focus on the OH stretch of interfacial water at the air/water interface and investigate its vibrational relaxation by femtosecond time-resolved, heterodyne-detected vibrational sum-frequency generation (TR-HD-VSFG) spectroscopy. The temporal change of the vibrationally excited hydrogen-bonded (HB) OH stretch band (ν=1→2 transition) is measured, enabling us to determine reliable vibrational relaxation (T1) time. The T1 times obtained with direct excitations of HB OH stretch are 0.2-0.4 ps, which are similar to the T1 time in bulk water and do not noticeably change with the excitation frequency. It suggests that vibrational relaxation of the interfacial HB OH proceeds predominantly with the intramolecular relaxation mechanism as in the case of bulk water. The delayed rise and following decay of the excited-state HB OH band are observed with excitation of free OH stretch, indicating conversion from excited free OH to excited HB OH (~0.9 ps) followed by relaxation to low-frequency vibrations (~0.3 ps). This study provides a complete set of the T1 time of the interfacial OH stretch and presents a unified picture of its vibrational relaxation at the air/water interface.

Ozone is a potent environmental oxidant with high chemical reactivity and is present in the ambient environment at a low level of a few tens of ppb. However, only limited information is known about low-level ozone's influence on the respiratory system. In the present study, we systematically investigated the degradation of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC), which is one of the major components of the pulmonary surfactant (PS), enabling breath function of the lung exposed to low ambient-level ozone (40 ± 10 ppb). Using the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technique combined with the Langmuir-Blodgett approach, we first tracked the degradation process of POPC molecules by determining the degradation products during exposure to the ambient environment. As a result, we found that the POPC molecules can be readily degraded from the C═C moiety in 45 min, yielding an aldehyde-type product of 1-palmitoyl-2-(9'-oxo-nonanoyl)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POnPC) and a trace amount of an acid-type one of 1-palmitoyl-2-azelaoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (PAzPC), as well as a pair of secondary ozonide (SOZ) isomers. Furthermore, with prolonged exposure, the SOZ stayed constant but the yield of PAzPC significantly increased with the decrease in POnPC. The low-level ozone-induced oxidation mechanisms for unsaturated lipids are discussed based on the quantitative analyses of these experimental observations. The present results demonstrate that the ground-level ozone is strong enough to induce dramatic oxidation damage to the unsaturated lipids of the PS. These oxidized species may trigger the lung's inflammatory response and be used as biomarkers for oxidative stress and inflammation.

<title>Abstract</title> The uniqueness of water originates from its three-dimensional hydrogen-bond network, but this hydrogen-bond network is suddenly truncated at the interface and non-hydrogen-bonded OH (free OH) appears. Although this free OH is the most characteristic feature of interfacial water, the molecular-level understanding of its dynamic property is still limited due to the technical difficulty. We study ultrafast vibrational relaxation dynamics of the free OH at the air/water interface using time-resolved heterodyne-detected vibrational sum frequency generation (TR-HD-VSFG) spectroscopy. With the use of singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis, the vibrational relaxation (T1) times of the free OH at the neat H2O and isotopically-diluted water interfaces are determined to be 0.87 ± 0.06 ps (neat H2O), 0.84 ± 0.09 ps (H2O/HOD/D2O = 1/2/1), and 0.88 ± 0.16 ps (H2O/HOD/D2O = 1/8/16). The absence of the isotope effect on the T1 time indicates that the main mechanism of the vibrational relaxation of the free OH is reorientation of the topmost water molecules. The determined sub-picosecond T1 time also suggests that the free OH reorients diffusively without the switching of the hydrogen-bond partner by the topmost water molecule.

Molecular-level understanding of interfaces is of crucial importance in many fundamental and applied sciences. Vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy has intrinsic interface-selectivity and has been widely utilized to study molecular structures and dynamics at interfaces. However, conventional VSFG spectroscopy measures the intensity of the signal, providing only information about the square of second-order nonlinear susceptibility, |χ(2)|2. Recently, we developed multiplex heterodyne-detected (HD-) VSFG spectroscopy. This HD-VSFG spectroscopy enables us to measure the imaginary part of χ(2), Imχ(2), which can be directly compared to infrared absorption and Raman spectra. Moreover, we have extended the HD-VSFG spectroscopy to time-resolved (TR-) HD-VSFG spectroscopy and two-dimensional (2D) HD-VSFG spectroscopy by combining with the pump-probe technique. This review describes development of these time-resolved HD-VSFG methods and their applications to the water interfaces.

Electric double layer at electrode interfaces plays an important role in electrochemical reactions. In order to probe interfaces selectively, heterodyne-detected sum frequency generation spectrometer was constructed and was applied to study the reaction of unsaturated lipid monolayers under low-level ozone. Furthermore, reactions at electrode interfaces of lithium-ion and lithium-air batteries were investigated by using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and sum frequency generation spectroscopy.
