Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Tatsuki Tsujimori is a professor of geological sciences at Tohoku University. After serving for 9 years at the Center for Northeast Asian Studies (CNEAS) on the Kawauchi Campus, he transferred to the Earth Science Department of the Graduate School of Science on the Aobayama Campus on December 1, 2024. At the same time, he established a new research group called “KREATE (KR8).” His expertise includes petrology, geochemistry, and tectonic processes, with a focus on metamorphic rocks such as blueschists, eclogites, jadeitites, and serpentinites.

He earned his Ph.D. in 1999 from Kanazawa University and completed post-doctoral training at Okayama University of Science and Stanford University. He has held academic positions at Okayama University Misasa (2006.12–2015.9) and Tohoku University (2015.9–present). Elected as an MSA Fellow in 2013 and a GSA Fellow in 2014, he received the JAMS Award in 2021. He serves on the editorial boards of nine scientific journals.

Prof. Tsujimori's research covers geological, geodynamic, and geochemical processes at convergent margins, addressing temporal and spatial scales from mineral equilibria to plate tectonics. He connects ancient high-pressure metamorphism with present-day geophysical observations, offering new insights into these processes.

Abstract The dissolved silica structures in quartz-saturated 0.50 and 1.50 m [mol kg H2O–1] Na2CO3 and 0.47 m NaOH solutions at up to 750 °C and 1.5 GPa were investigated by in-situ Raman spectroscopy using a Bassett-type hydrothermal diamond anvil cell. The solubility of quartz in the solutions was determined by in-situ observations of the complete dissolution of the grain. The Raman spectra of the quartz-saturated Na2CO3 and NaOH solutions at high pressures and temperatures exhibited the tetrahedral symmetric stretching band of silica monomers. The lower frequency and broader width of the band than those in pure H2O indicated the presence of both neutral and deprotonated monomers. In addition, we newly confirmed the intense bridging oxygen band and the tetrahedral symmetric stretching band of Q1 (silicate center having a single bridging oxygen atom) in the spectra of the Na2CO3 solutions. The integrated intensity ratios of the bridging oxygen band to the monomer band increased with the addition of Na2CO3 and NaOH to fluids, corresponding to an elevation of the measured quartz solubilities. These observations indicate that the formation of silica oligomers in addition to neutral and deprotonated monomers explains the high dissolved silica concentrations in the solutions. The presence of deprotonated monomers under the experimental conditions suggests that deprotonated oligomers exist in the solutions, because the production of the latter more significantly reduces the Gibbs free energy. The anionic silica species and oligomers formed in alkaline silicate fluids may act as effective ligands for certain metal ions or complexes in deep subduction zones.

<title>Abstract</title> In collision-type orogens, where high-pressure and ultrahigh-pressure (HP–UHP) metamorphism usually occurs, deeply subducted continental slabs with eclogitized mafic rocks often undergo recrystallization/overprinting with various geothermal gradients after the peak conditions at lower-to-middle-crustal levels. During the crustal stabilization, the transition from eclogite- to granulite-facies is common. We conducted metamorphic petrology and zircon geochronology on (1) bimineralic and (2) partially granulitized eclogites from the Neoproterozoic Ufipa Terrane (Southwestern Tanzania). Microtextural relationships and mineral chemistry define three metamorphic stages: eclogite metamorphism (M1), HP granulite-facies overprinting (M2), and amphibolite-facies retrogression (M3). The bimineralic eclogite has a basaltic composition and lacks M2 minerals. In contrast, the kyanite eclogite is characterized by a gabbro-dioritic whole-rock composition and contains inherited magmatic zircon. Although the matrix is highly granulitized, garnet and kyanite contain eclogite-facies mineral inclusions. Phase equilibria modeling revealed P–T conditions of ~2.1–2.6 GPa and ~650–860°C for the M1 stage, and ~1.4–1.6 GPa and ~750–940°C for the M2 stage. Zircon with eclogite-facies mineral inclusions from the bimineralic eclogite lack Eu anomaly in the REE patterns and yielded the M1 eclogite metamorphic age of 588 ± 3 Ma. Zircon overgrowths surrounding the inherited Paleoproterozoic magmatic cores in kyanite eclogite yielded 562 ± 3 Ma. A weak negative Eu anomaly in the REE patterns and the absence of eclogitic mineral inclusions suggest the zircon growths at the M2 HP granulite-facies metamorphic stage. These new data indicate an eclogite- to granulite-facies transition time of 26 ± 4 million years (Myr), suggesting a rate of HP rock exhumation toward a lower crustal level of ~0.7–1.5 mm/yr. Furthermore, the density evolution model indicates that buoyant host orthogneiss with low-density gabbro-dioritic eclogite, plays an important role in carrying high-density basaltic eclogite. Our 2D thermomechanical modeling also suggests that a slab break-off with a lower angle subduction of &amp;lt;~20° triggers the exhumation of the HP slab sliver with ~20–30 Myr eclogite-to-granulite transition time of large HP–UHP terranes in major collision zones.

Maruyama et al. (2011) noted; "Some researchers insist that the Dabie-Su Lu metamorphic belt, which was formed by the North China-South China collision, and the Sangun metamorphic belt of Japan were generated along the same trench, based on their similar radiometric ages (Ishiwatari and Tsujimori, 2003; Ernst et al., 2007). This idea is completely wrong." Omori and Isozaki (2011) also criticized these papers as "a synthesis that misleads to cause confusion" and "a strange paleogeographic reconstruction" using the same logic. These criticisms are based on the idea that the continental collision-type (A-type) and oceanic subduction-type (B-type; also called Cordilleran-type or Pacific-type) orogenic belts are different and exclusive of each other. However, it is evident that both A- and B-type processes took place simultaneously along each of the Appalachian-Caledonian and Hercynian belts (Maruyama et al., 1996), and the Himalayan continental collision and Indonesian oceanic subduction are currently occurring along the same plate boundary. We provide an objective discussion to counter those criticisms, and point out some discrepancies in the large-scale superficial nappe model of Omori and Isozaki (2011) for the geology of Korea. We believe that our "Yaeyama promontory" hypothesis has inspired constructive international discussions about the configuration of the Earliest Mesozoic collision belt in East Asia, and we think our sinuous configuration model still persists.

The Japanese islands were formed during a long-sustained active Pacific-type orogen resulting from subduction, oceanward-accretion, and landward-erosion, which began in the early-Paleozoic. The earlier stage of the accretion of oceanic and continental materials took place between 500-300 Ma, reflecting the convergence of two or more paleo-Pacific plates and the stable, non-subducted Middle and Late Proterozoic continental lithosphere. In Japanese Paleozoic geo-tectonic units, two different high-pressure metamorphic rocks with the Pacific-type protoliths are associated with serpentinite bodies of Early Paleozoic Oeyama ophiolite: blueschist-facies pelitic and mafic schists with phengite K-Ar ages of 350-280 Ma (Renge) and high-pressure epidote-amphibolite-facies amphibolite and pelitic schist with 480-400 Ma hornblende and phengite K-Ar age (Kitomyo-Fuko Pass). The Early Paleozoic Kitomyo-Fuko Pass high-pressure metamorphic rocks provide a petrotectonic constraint on the earliest subduction event in the Japanese orogen. The presence of Middle to Late Paleozoic Renge lawsonite-blueschist and glaucophane-eclogite provides evidence of a cold geotherm in the paleo-subduction zone. Metamorphic and geochronologic data provide important constraints on tectonic development during the earliest stages of orogenic growth associated with the subduction of the paleo-Pacific oceanic plates. The lack of Paleozoic batholith belt and fore-arc sediments coeval with either Renge or Kitomyo-Fuko Pass metamorphism and the presence of blueschist-facies metamorphosed fore-arc ophiolititic materials (fragments of the Oeyama ophiolite) in the Renge metamorphic rocks suggest that a significant landward subduction erosion has occurred since early-Paleozoic time; the eroded material must have been recycled back into the mantle during subduction of the paleo-pacific plate. Thus, the early history of subduction-related orogenesis—after the dramatic tectonic conversion from a passive to active convergent margin—in the Japanese islands is comparable to the modern island arc system occurring worldwide. To further our understanding of the continuous paleo-subduction record in the Japanese Paleozoic geotectonic units, a more detailed and comprehensive approach to geology, petrology, and geochronology of high-pressure metamorphic rocks and associated rocks is required than that documented in previous studies.

Glaucophane-epidote eclogite occurs in the eclogitic unit of the Omi serpentinite melange, SW Japan. The eclogite has a peak mineral assemblage of garnet+omphacite+glaucophane+epidote+quartz+rutile±phengite. A P-T pseudosection for a bulk composition appropriate to the eclogite has been calculated using the THERMOCALC 2.75 program in the model system Na_2O-CaO-FeO-MgO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2-H_2O (NCFMASH) with quartz and water in excess. In the calculated phase diagram, a trivariant field of garnet+omphacite+glaucophane+zoisite occurs within the high-pressure divariant field of garnet+omphacite+glaucophane+hornblende (sensu lato)+zoisite-it is consistent with the previous P-T estimation of peak metamorphism at T=550-600℃ and P>1.8GPa. The P-T pseudosection and average-P calculations using THERMOCALC reveal a significant pressure gap between two contrasting high-grade rocks in the eclogitic unit and the non-eclogitic unit. The glaucophane-epidote eclogite may have experienced higher pressure relative to the non-eclogitic paragonite-garnet amphibolite characterized by a trivariant field of garnet+paragonite+hornblende (sensu lato)+zoisite. Considering inferred thermal structure of present-day subduction zones, glaucophane-epidote eclogite may record subduction metamorphism of young and warm slab.

Ultramafic rocks of the Omi serpentinite melange are extensively serpentinized. However, newly discovered Cr-spinels in chromitite and massive serpentinite provide a key to decipher the origin and metamorphism of serpentinites. Cr-spinels show distinct chemical zoning: the cores have high Cr# [=Cr/(Cr+Al) atomic ratio] (0.70-0.77); Mg# [=Mg/(Mg+Fe^<2+>) atomic ratio] decreases remarkably towards the rim through a transition zone between core and ferritchromite rim. Moreover, the cores of zoned Cr-spinel in chromitite contain abundant tiny inclusions of mainly pargasitic amphibole (up to 3.8 wt.% Na_2O) and rare diopside. These inclusions were completely replaced by secondary tremolitic amphibole and chlorite at the rim, and by dolomite at the Ti-enriched metasomatized rim. Although the Mg# of the core (0.20-0.43) is significantly lower than those of Cr-spinel in both Alpine and abyssal peridotites, the observed mineral inclusions and the analysed Cr# at the core are interpreted to be relics of igneous stage. Compositional characteristics and the occurrence of hydrous mineral inclusions of the zoned Cr-spinel exhibit critical features that suggest a supra-sub-duction origin. Serpentinites of the Omi serpentinite melange may have derived from the mantle wedge above a subduction zone and sub-sequently metamorphosed at low- to mid-temperature condition of probably eclogite or amphibolite facies.

The Fuko Pass metacumulate is a tectonic block (4.5×1.5 km in size) within the Oeyama peridotite body in the Inner Zone of southwestern Japan. It was metamorphosed under the high-pressure and moderate-temperature condition to form a mineral assemblage hornblende+clinozoisite+kyanite+paragonite+albite+rutile. K-Ar ages were determined on hornblende separates from four epidote amphibolite samples, yielding 443-403 Ma. This suggests a Siluro-Ordovician subduction-related metamorphic event for the Fuko Pass metacumulate, which is distinct from the Late Paleozoic high-P/T type metamorphic events of the Renge metamorphic belt in the Inner Zone of southwestern Japan. The Fuko Pass metacumulate is correlated, in age, with the Early Paleozoic high-P/T type schists (445-402 Ma) of the Kurosegawa klippe in the Outer Zone.

Eclogitic glaucophane schist occurs as a boulder (about 4 m diameter) among many other garnet glaucophane schist and epidote glaucophane schist of the late Paleozoic Renge metamorphic belt in the Yunotani valley, western Omi area. The eclogitic glaucophane schist forms a mafic layer (1.2 m wide) intercalated within pelitic schist (garnet-paragonite-phengite schist). It consists mainly of glaucophane (modal volume : 37%), garnet (21%), omphacite (19%), epidote (19%), and small amount of quartz, albite, phengite, chlorite, rutile and titanite. The eclogite facies mineral assemblage 'garnet+omphacite+glaucophane+epidote+rutile+quartz' is slightly replaced by secondary chlorite, albite, calcite and rarely actinolite, and form penetrative schistosity (S_1). The preceding epidote blueschist facies mineral inclusions 'glaucophane+epidote+titanite+quartz+albite' forming earlier schistosity (S_0) are preserved in the rotated garnet core. These petrographic features show progressive transition from the epidote blueschist facies to the eclogite facies with little retrogression. Although the relict eclogite facies minerals have been previously found in some retrogressive Renge metamorphic rocks, the Yunotani eclogitic glaucophane schist first provides evidences for the progressive P-T path leading to the eclogite facies.

Eclogitic glaucophane schist has been discovered as a boulder (about 4m diameter) from the Yunotani valley in the western Omi area of the late Paleozoic Renge metamorphic belt (Fig.1). The eclogitic glaucophane schist (Fig.2) occurs as a mafic layer (1.2m wide) intercalated within pelitic schist (garnetparagonite-phengite schist), and is characterized by the mineral assemblage garnet (modal volume: 21%)+omphacite (19%)+ glaucophane (37%)+epidote (19%)+rutile+phengite+albite+quartz (Fig.3). This is the first finding of the late Paleozoic eclogite facies metabasite, which is almost devoid of retrogression and preserving textural evolution (Fig.4) and mineral zoning (Fig.5) during progressive metamorphism. This rock provides an evidence for the eclogite facies metamorphism in the late Paleozoic Western-Pacific margin. More detailed description will appear in Tsujimori et al. (in press).

The main subject of this research was development of in-situ zircon dating method by the secondary ion mass spectrometer. The author succeeded to develop sample polishing technique to get the very flat surface and to prepare reliable zircon standards by conventional techniques, then established new dating method, which can be applied less than 10 micron zircon grain. The method had been applied to the Kohistan high pressure metermorphic rocks and determined ~45 Ma as their metermorphic age.
