    In the present article, the creation of a 3D glassy state by gradient thermal history distributed in a monolithic Zr50Cu40Al10 metallic glass using the proposed thermal gradient treatment is discussed. In this thermal method, a rod sample is annealed while sandwiched between BeCu25 jigs and cooled down by tilting contact against a liquid nitrogen‐cooled Cu mesh. This allows one side of the edge of the rod sample to cool down rapidly from the supercooled liquid region and introduce a temperature/cooling rate difference in 3D in a single process. Specific heat measurement, indentation test and evaluation of incubation time for crystallization reveal creation of 3D gradients throughout the whole sample. In the present study, a new technique of creating a 3D heterogeneity of glassy state to the desired distribution by gradient thermal history in metallic glasses will be promoted, and the development of functionally graded monolithic bulk metallic glasses will be encouraged in near future.

    Abstract A novel thermal rejuvenation treatment facility for Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) was developed, consisting of a rapid heating and indirect liquid nitrogen quenching process. The re-introduction of free volume into thermally rejuvenated BMG results in more disordered state. The rejuvenation improves ductility, implying that the re-introduced free volume aids in the recovery of the shear transformation zone (STZ) site and volume. Actually, it is confirmed that relaxation significantly reduces STZ volume; however, it is recovered by thermal rejuvenation. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations also indicate that rejuvenation enhances homogeneous deformation. The current findings indicate that the thermal rejuvenation method is extremely effective for recovering or improving the ductility of metallic glass that has been lost due to relaxation.

    <title>Abstract</title>Pressure-induced structural changes in metallic glasses have been of great interest as they are expected to open new ways to synthesize novel materials with unexpected properties. Here, we investigated the effect of simultaneous high-pressure and high-temperature treatment on the structure and properties of a Zr50Cu40Al10 metallic glass by in situ X-ray structure measurement and property analysis of the final material. We found the unusual formation of Cu-rich nanocrystals at high pressure and temperature, accompanied by significant strength and hardness enhancement. Based on reverse Monte Carlo modeling and molecular dynamics simulations, the structure of the metallic glass changed to a densely packed, chemically uniform configuration with high short-range and medium-range ordering at high pressure and temperature. These results show that high-pressure annealing processes provide a new way to improve and control properties without changing their composition.

    <title>Abstract</title>An anomalous glass was discovered through high-pressure heat treatment (5.5 GPa at 850 K) followed by rapid cooling of a Zr50Cu40Al10 metallic glass. Despite a reduction in the crystallization temperature and enthalpy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that the collected bulk sample maintained a fully amorphous structure. The density of the sample was 0.6% larger than that of the as-cast state and was even larger than that of the partially crystallized state. These results suggest the formation of an ultradense packing glass that cannot be obtained through conventional annealing. Compression test results indicated a significant increase in the Young’s modulus and fracture strength, supporting the creation of an anomalous metallic glass. In addition, plasticity was observed in the treated sample. It was therefore concluded that the high-pressure heat treatment enabled the creation of a new type of glass that is normally overshadowed by the crystallized phase at atmospheric pressure. We explained the creation of the ultradense glass by introducing a pressure parameter (<italic>P</italic>) to the conventional volume (<italic>v</italic>) - temperature (<italic>T</italic>) diagram.

    Amorphous alloys have disorderd structres, and the degree of structral ralaxation is one of the important quantities to evaluate their structure. Some studies have reported that mechanical propeties depend on the degree of structral relaxation, and thus it is improtant to understand the mechanism of strcutral relaxation and how to control it. In this study, we investigated the structral relaxation during cooling process from liquid using molecular dynamics techniques. Amorphous models are consturcted via melt-quench process from liquid. During melt-quemch process, cooling rates are changed at various temperature in order to investigate the relation between cooling rate and dgree of structral relaxation. Moreover, mean square displacement indicates that relaxation dynamics become slower slightly above the glasss transition temperatue. Based on these results, we discuss the relaxation dynamics during the melt-quench process.

    We develop a new heating-quenching process above the glass transition temperature and establish a technique for controlling the relaxation state by introducing non-affine strain in metallic glass. In particular, the introduction of the gradient relaxation state distribution in the radial direction of the cylindrical sample announced in 2020 provides a novel material control method that renews the conventional wisdom of metallic glass materials. By such material control, we succeeded in producing a metallic glass showing excellent plastic deformability (toughness). In addition, structural evaluation by molecular dynamics simulations revealed structural changes at the atomic level due to the introduction of non-affine strains, and was able to elucidate the mechanism of relaxation state control and construct the theory.

    Rapid cooling system for bulk meallic glassy samples was constructed and Zr,Pd based samples with various random structures were successfully prepared. TEM observations were conducted to observe the initial nucleation and crystal growth stages in metallic glasses and viscoelastic measurements were performed to evaluate the residual amorphous states. It was difficult to clarify which relaxation regions relates to each crystallization step, but we got another new findings cocerning the crystallization of metallic glasses. We revealed for the first time that the crystallization and rejuvenation area, which are apparently oposite energy state regions, can be coexisted in the glassy structure. Our findings will provide beneficial information for the crystallization studies of metallic glasses.

    Deformation and in-situ structural transition in Zr-based metallic glasses have been analyzed using high-energy x-ray diffraction by the evaluation of macroscopic, microscopic (medium-range) and atomic (short-range) strains. We found that change in microscopic strain strongly depends on the difference of inhomogeneous local structure, which is enhanced in the metallic glass with multi-components. Meanwhile, atomic strain is affected by the kind of pairs among the constitutional elements. Thus, it is important to investigate the deformation mechanism in metallic glasses using multi-scale analysis due to the different behavior with scale length.

    Relaxation of glassy alloys is generally regarded as one of the important phenomena originating from the intrinsic random structure. Due to a strong correlation with structure, transformation, mechanical and magnetic properties of metallic glasses, we have to control the relaxation state carefully for industrial use. Relaxation state depends on a cooling rate just above glass transition temperature, Tg. We have investigated the recovery of the less relaxation state by low temperature annealing just above Tg and various cooling conditions in several glassy alloys by experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies. The enthalpy of relaxation increases by such low temperature annealing at higher cooling rates with a significant mechanical softening. The MD simulation clearly indicates that the glassy alloys can be rejuvenated in the case of higher cooling rates than the initial one (i.e., cooling rate in the initial preparation of glass) by annealing over Tg. Such rejuvenation is saturated in the temperature range over 150 K above Tg. The result is consistent with the experimental one using Cu mold casting. The present study on recovering and controlling relaxation state provides useful information on the application of metallic glasses.

    We discussed their physical properties, such as the thermal stability, the structure relaxation, the glass transition and the fragility , by constructing the structural model based on the three fundamental structures, i.e. the area (P) where the local atomic arrangements are similar with those of the crystals precipitated in the amorphous matrix, the area (I) consisting of densely packed icosahedral clusters, and the area (W) belonging to neither of them.

    Using a new custom-made single mode microwave irradiation machine (operated at 915 MHz) which allows electrical and magnetic field separation and is equipped with an alumina (Al_2O_3) press, production of the large-scale samples (30 mm in diameter and larger) of the metallic glasses, crystal-glassy and glassy-polymer composites as well as nanocrystalline dispersed glassy composites has been carried out in a vacuum and inert atmosphere. A theoretical explanation of microwave heating of metallic powders in microwaves using effective medium approximation for core-shell composite has been proposed. The hydrogen absorption behaviour, the structure change and dehydrogenation properties for metal hydrides and complex hydrides by microwave irradiation were investigated.

    We observed that the nucleation mode in supercooled liquid can be controlled by changing atmosphere in the Cu mold casting technique. Zr-based bulk metallic glasses containing Pd or Nb exhibit a good plasticity. It is due to the deformation-induced dynamic nanostructure change. We also investigated that the synergy effect of dynamic nanostructure change and glassy structure control is very important on the improvement of mechanical properties such as plasticity in metallic glasses.

    Development of the multi-functional materials which have two or more functions has been required for a high integration, high functionality and energy saving of the next-generation device. In this research, it succeeded in preparation of the multi-functional materials thin films which have both magnetic and dielectric properties such as Y-Fe-O and Co-Nb_2O_5 thin film by chemical vapor deposition and RF sputtering methods.     (1)The formation pf nanostructured-metallic glass composite has been found in the rapidly quendied Cu-(Zr or Hf)-Ti alloys. (2)The nanocrystalline particles have a fine grain size of 5 to 10 nm in diameter and are dispersed homogeneously in the glassy matrix. (3)The nanocrystalline particles have a metastable cubic structure with Cu-rich composition, which are brought us the formation mechanism of the stable Cu-rich clusters in the supercooled liquid state. (4)The primary transformation process is clarified in both the alloy systems, where another metastable CuZr phase is formed remaining the nanocrystalline cubic phase in the as-quenched state in the Cu-Zr-Ti alloy. However, the glassy and metastable cubic phases are transformed into the Cu8Hf3 phase in the Cu-Hf-Ti alloy. (5)The high mechanical strength is exhibited in the nanostructured-metallic glass composite in the Cu-Zr-Ti alloy and it is improved in the primary crystallized state. It is due to the formation of two different nanocrystalline phases. (6)Nano icosahedral quasicrystalline phase formation is found in the primary stage in the Zr65Al7.5Cu27.5 metallic glass, where the icosahedral cluster has a high stability in the supercooled liquid state. (7)The fracture mechanism of the nano icosahedral quasicrystal dispersed Zr-Pt binary amorphous alloy is investigated. We have found that the fracture takes place in the glassy region among the dispersed icosahedral particles. (8)In these studies, we can conclude that the nanoscale structure control based on the metallic glasses using the stable duster and/or local structure is very effective on the improvement of mechanical properties as well as is very important on the investigation of fundamental properties such as the formation mechanism and transformation process in the materials.
