A minimally invasive cancer treatment method utilizing magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and magnetic coils, magnetic hyperthermia, generates heat locally inside the body to degenerate cancer cells. The uniformity of the coil's magnetic field is a crucial factor in enhancing the therapeutic effect. In this study, we evaluated the temperature distribution of MNPs on induction heating experiments at various distances using two types of coils. We found that the 2‐turn coil with a larger outer diameter and higher magnetic field uniformity resulted in a treatment temperature region approximately twice as wide as the 4‐turn coil, indicating the enhancement of the treatment effect under the uniform magnetic field distributions. © 2024 Institute of Electrical Engineer of Japan and Wiley Periodicals LLC.

In prior studies focused on transcranial magnetic stimulator (TMS) coils, optimization of coil windings typically occurred on generic curved surfaces, such as planes or cylindrical shapes. However, these surfaces do not consider the challenge of coil misalignment, which arises due to variations in individual head geometries. This misalignment can significantly diminish the coil's effectiveness. To address this issue, we propose a novel coil design approach that identifies the 'best-fit' curved surface, minimizing the likelihood of mismatch with diverse skull geometries. We further enhance the coil winding pattern using the stream function applied to this custom curved surface. Numerical simulations using a hemisphere brain model demonstrate that the coil designed on this 'best-fit' curved surface exhibits a remarkable 22% increase in efficiency and a 41% expansion in stimulation area compared to the conventional butterfly coil. These findings underscore the advantages of our method in crafting high-efficiency and wide-ranging therapeutic TMS coil.

We investigated the magnetization response and heat generation of magnetic particles exposed to high-speed pulsed magnetic fields (PMF) during magnetic hyperthermia cancer treatment. The magnetization measurements exhibited an asymmetric change in the shape of the hysteresis loop, attributable to the rapid and substantial changes in the short-duration PMF (75 mT/μs). We propose a novel parameter to evaluate heat efficiency. The parameter considered disparities in waveforms and served as a valuable metric for evaluating the effectiveness of heat production. Our findings affirmed a substantial enhancement in heat efficiency with the application of PMF. Furthermore, the heat generation stemming from the magnetic energy dissipation within the PMF exhibited direct proportionality to the square of the field amplitude. The heat efficiency is fourfold higher than that generated by conventional waveform.

In the surgical treatment of nonpalpable breast lesions, such as in early-stage cancer, a hook-wire is inserted into the lesion as a marker to enable surgeons to excise the tissue, along with the hook-wire, with a good margin. However, a benchmark technique for intraoperatively determining whether the excised tissue has an appropriate margin around the lesion has not yet been established. In this study, a method for locating a ferromagnetic stainless steel hook-wire inside the excised tissue using a magnetometer is proposed. The magnetometer is placed around a phantom along with the hook-wire at varied locations to map the magnetic field distribution. The three-dimensional coordinates of hook-wire are obtained by executing an optimization algorithm. The experimental results indicate that the location of the hook-wire is successfully obtained. Based on the information regarding the margin around the hook-wire, the surgeon can immediately evaluate the risk of whether some cancer cells still remain in the body.

Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) holds promise for heating magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in cancer therapy, especially for rapidly heating MNPs. This study aims to enhance the FMR-based heating efficiency of multifunctional hybrid gold and iron oxide nanoparticles (Au-Fe3O4 NPs) as theranostic agents. We experimentally investigate the FMR-based heating properties of newly developed dumbbell-like Au-Fe3O4 NPs, which feature ∼5 nm gold and 15 nm iron oxide components, in comparison to our previously developed Au-coated Fe3O4 NPs (Fe3O4 core ∼5.2 nm, Au shell thickness ∼0.5 nm). For comparison, we also synthesize pure Fe3O4 NPs (∼11 nm) under the same experimental conditions as the dumbbell-like Au-Fe3O4 NPs but without 5 nm Au seeds. Temperature measurements are taken at various DC fields (HDC = 0‒1600 Oe) under a radiofrequency (RF) field (fAC = 4 GHz, HAC = 1.265 Oe) for ∼13s. The results reveal a rapid temperature rise during RF field ON, followed by a decline upon RF field OFF. Remarkably, dumbbell-like Au-Fe3O4 NPs achieve a peak temperature increase of 23.4 °C, corresponding to a heating rate of 1.73 °C/s at HDC = 400 Oe, surpassing the combined values of ∼11 nm Fe3O4 NPs (11.0 °C, i.e., 0.83 °C/s at HDC = 1000 Oe) and ∼5 nm Au NPs (3.5 °C). Comparing these results to our previously developed Au-coated Fe3O4 NPs, which achieved a heating rate of 1.29 °C/s (temperature rise 16.9 °C) under HDC = 1200 Oe with an RF field at fAC = 4 GHz and a significantly higher HAC = 4 Oe (i.e. for HAC = 1.265 Oe, the estimated heating rate was 0.129 °C/s with a temperature rise of 1.69 °C), the dumbbell-shaped Au-Fe3O4 NPs demonstrate a substantially higher temperature increase by 13.4 times. These findings highlight the exceptional potential of dumbbell-shaped Au-Fe3O4 NPs for application in magnetic hyperthermia.

In this study, the theoretical feasibility of utilizing optically pumped magnetometers for on-board magnetoencephalography measurements was explored. Simulations were conducted to generate steady-state visually evoked response (SSVER) signals that incorporate vehicle noise, and a noise reduction strategy specifically designed for on-board applications is proposed. Upon engine activation, the magnetic field vibration of a conventional gasoline-powered vehicle measured in an urban environment was found to be approximately seven times greater in the vertical direction than in the horizontal direction. The maximum signal-to-noise ratio of the SSVER in an automotive environment was simulated to be −110 dB. A 350-mm side-length, 20-turn active compensation coil can achieve an attenuation rate of approximately 28 dB at a target frequency of 24 Hz for measurements inside the vehicle cabin. Therefore, an increase in the number of coil turns would result in a higher attenuation rate. Further noise attenuation to the level inside a magnetically shielded room requires approximately 80 dB.

We propose a novel method based on an inverse problem to design a single channel radio frequency (RF) receive coil for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with an optimized signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for imaging the rat kidney. We identified a dedicated curved-surface coil design for use on the rat body surface utilizing inverse problem analysis using direct current calculation and quantitatively evaluated the indicators of coil performance using alternating current calculation. The proposed coil achieved increased SNR and signal intensity responses that were respectively 1.05- and 2-fold higher than those of conventional surface coils. In the future, we will fabricate a prototype coil and perform the MRI of the rat kidney to diagnose kidney diseases.

Temporal interference (TI) stimulation, which utilizes multiple external electric fields with amplitude modulation for neural modulation, has emerged as a potential noninvasive brain stimulation methodology. However, the clinical application of TI stimulation is inhibited by its uncertain fundamental mechanisms, and research has previously been restricted to numerical simulations and immunohistology without considering the acute in vivo response of the neural circuit. To address the characterization and understanding of the mechanisms underlying the approach, we investigated instantaneous brainwide activation patterns in response to invasive interferential current (IFC) stimulation compared with low-frequency alternative current stimulation (ACS). Results demonstrated that IFC stimulation is capable of inducing regional neural responses and modulating brain networks; however, the activation threshold for significantly recruiting a neural response using IFC was higher (at least twofold) than stimulation via alternating current, and the spatial distribution of the activation signal was restricted. A distinct blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) response pattern was observed, which could be accounted for by the activation of distinct types of cells, such as inhibitory cells, by IFC. These results suggest that IFC stimulation might not be as efficient as conventional brain modulation methods, especially when considering TI stimulation as a potential alternative for stimulating subcortical brain areas. Therefore, we argue that a future transcranial application of TI on human subjects should take these implications into account and consider other stimulation effects using this technique.

Virus detection methods based on nonlinear magnetic response of magnetic nanoparticles have been investigated, and magnetic detection methods using the third harmonic are widely applied, owing to their high sensitivity and short measurement time. This paper proposes a virus detection method based on the second harmonic because of its larger signal component. We found that the second harmonic signal is superior to the third harmonic signal for small nanobeads and a large change of the second harmonic signal in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with nanobeads concentration. In addition, a virus detection limit of 100 pg/ml is achieved. Therefore, the proposed method can potentially be utilized for rapid screening of viruses.

Magnetic hyperthermia with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) has been introduced to selective treatment of tumor and the MNPs also has demonstrated diagnosis. For non-invasive treatment, a therapeutic platform with temperature monitoring that can avoid overheating in normal tissues is of vital importance. In this study, we have developed a wireless temperature monitoring system by utilizing the combination of magnetic harmonic signals of the MNPs for magnetic hyperthermia treatment in laboratory experiments. We achieved an accurate measurement with an error of 0.18 °C. For practical use on breast/oral cancer, a detectable distance of at least 10 mm is required. To demonstrate the feasibility toward future biomedical applications, we investigated the dependency on the amount of Resovist® and the error is less than 0.5 °C in a 10 mm distance. Our system can measure the correct temperature regardless of Resovist amount. The results indicate that our system can apply for monitoring temperature on magnetic hyperthermia treatment.

We analyzed a circuit for generating a pulsed magnetic field with a pulse width of 2 μs at 250 kHz using circuit simulation. We developed a circuit that can generate a 12A, 250kHz pulsed current. Next, we conducted heating experiments with small magnetic particles for 200 s using the pulsed magnetic field, and the advantage of the field was 15 times that of a sine wave magnetic field with respect to magnetic energy. This study has the potential to improve the heating efficiency of magnetic hyperthermia, to reduce the amount of magnetic material, and to treat deep inside the body.

Negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have emerged as promising candidates for a wide range of quantum applications, especially quantum sensing of magnetic field. Implementation of nanostructure into diamond is powerful for efficient photon collection of NV centers and chip-scale miniaturization of the device, which is crucial for sensitive and practical diamond magnetometers. However, fabrication of the diamond nanostructure involves technical limitations and can degrade the spin coherence of the NV centers. In this study, we demonstrate the hybrid integration of a silicon nitride grating structure on a single-crystal diamond by utilizing transfer printing. This approach allows the implementation of the nanostructure in diamond using a simple pick-and-place assembly, facilitating diamond-based quantum applications without any complicated diamond nanofabrication. We observed the intensity enhancement in the collected NV emissions both theoretically and experimentally using the integrated grating structure. By applying the increased photon intensity, we demonstrate the improved magnetic sensitivity of the fabricated device. The proposed hybrid integration approach will offer a promising route toward a compact and sensitive diamond NV-based magnetometer.

Abstract Magnetocardiography is a contactless imaging modality for electric current propagation in the cardiovascular system. Although conventional sensors provide sufficiently high sensitivity, their spatial resolution is limited to a centimetre-scale, which is inadequate for revealing the intra-cardiac electrodynamics such as rotational waves associated with ventricular arrhythmias. Here, we demonstrate invasive magnetocardiography of living rats at a millimetre-scale using a quantum sensor based on nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond. The acquired magnetic images indicate that the cardiac signal source is well explained by vertically distributed current dipoles, pointing from the right atrium base via the Purkinje fibre bundle to the left ventricular apex. We also find that this observation is consistent with and complementary to an alternative picture of electric current density distribution calculated with a stream function method. Our technique will enable the study of the origin and progression of various cardiac arrhythmias, including flutter, fibrillation, and tachycardia.

Recently, there has been remarkable progress in the field of magnetic nanoparticles, with them now being applied in cancer surgery. During tumor surgery, lymph node dissection is required along with tumor resection. However, in cases such as breast cancer, lymph node dissection can be omitted if no metastasis is found in the sentinel lymph node (SLN; the first draining lymph node from a primary tumor), thereby reducing postoperative sequelae. The presence or absence of SN metastasis alters the surgical procedure; therefore, intraoperative SLN mapping and rapid pathological SLN diagnosis are required. The standard procedure of SLN mapping is a combination of radioisotope and dye methods, but radioisotope methods have problems associated with regulation and safety. To overcome these problems, a SLN mapping method using magnetic nanoparticles has been developed. This technique has already been clinically applied to breast cancer. In this article, a laparoscopic magnetic probe was developed to expand the SLN theory to visceral organs such as the stomach and gallbladder. A preclinical study of SLN mapping was feasible in laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery. Although resected sentinel lymph nodes can be rapidly diagnosed intraoperatively, the diagnostic accuracy of hematoxylin and eosin staining is limited. Conversely, immunohistochemistry, which gives additional information to pathologists by staining particular proteins, has not yet been used for rapid diagnostics because of the time required for staining. A new rapid immunostaining method is magnetically-promoted rapid immunofluorescence staining using functionalized fluorescent ferrite beads. The antigen-antibody reaction is accelerated by magnetic force, and antigen-antibody complexes can be directly observed with a fluorescence microscope. We have succeeded in diagnosing frozen sections within 15 min from fixation to staining. To realize minimally invasive surgery, a detailed understanding of tumor development is essential, and nanotechnology is being applied in this field to address this issue. In this paper, we introduce a SLN biopsy and rapid immunostaining method based on magnetic nanoparticle technology to further this field.

Screening, monitoring, and diagnosis are critical in oncology treatment. However, there are limitations with the current clinical methods, notably the time, cost, and special facilities required for radioisotope-based methods. An alternative approach, which uses magnetic beads, offers faster analyses with safer materials over a wide range of oncological applications. Magnetic beads have been used to detect extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the serum of pancreatic cancer patients with statistically different EV levels in preoperative, postoperative, and negative control samples. By incorporating fluorescence, magnetic beads have been used to quantitatively measure prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a prostate cancer biomarker, which is sensitive enough even at levels found in healthy patients. Immunostaining has also been incorporated with magnetic beads and compared with conventional immunohistochemical methods to detect lesions; the results suggest that immunostained magnetic beads could be used for pathological diagnosis during surgery. Furthermore, magnetic nanoparticles, such as superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), can detect sentinel lymph nodes in breast cancer in a clinical setting, as well as those in gallbladder cancer in animal models, in a surgery-applicable timeframe. Ultimately, recent research into the applications of magnetic beads in oncology suggests that the screening, monitoring, and diagnosis of cancers could be improved and made more accessible through the adoption of this technology.

PURPOSE: Radioisotope (RI) tracers are generally used for preoperative mapping of sentinel lymph node (SLN) and intraoperative detection with a portable γ probe. However, the use of RI has several limitations. Therefore, a method without RI is required for the widespread application of SLN biopsy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of SLN biopsy with a handheld cordless magnetic probe following magnetic resonance lymphography (MRL) using superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) and for clinically N0 early oral cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MRL using SPIO and SLNB with the handheld cordless magnetic probe were performed for 27 patients with clinically N0 early oral cancer. RESULTS: In all 27 patients (100%), SLNs were detected by MRL, and the total and mean number of SLNs were 73 and 2.7, respectively. All SLNs identified by MRL were detectable using the magnetic probe in all patients. CONCLUSIONS: SLNB with handheld cordless magnetic probe following preoperative SLN mapping by MRL using SPIO is feasible, without RI use, for neck management in cases of clinically N0 early oral cancer.

Magnetic hyperthermia (MH) is a promising cancer therapy in which the heating temperature is expected to be a key determinant for its success. A therapeutic system with high-accuracy temperature control is of vital importance to avoid overheating in normal tissues surrounding a tumor. We previously developed a PID-based temperature control system and verified its validity in vitro. In this study, we validate our control system in vivo. First, we investigated both the improvement in heat generation by high-density Resovist® (Ferucarbotran) and the optimal PID tuning method for the high-density Resovist® in vitro. Next, we injected the high-density Resovist® into mice and then performed PID-based temperature control in vivo. We demonstrate that by using our PID-based control system, it is possible to accurately control the therapeutic temperature (e.g., 50°C) in vivo with a standard deviation of 0.05°C in the steady-state. Our system has the potential to be used for MH either alone or together with other cancer treatment modalities for basic and clinical studies.

Fluorescence imaging is a critical tool to understand the spatial distribution of biomacromolecules in cells and in vivo, providing information on molecular dynamics and interactions. Numerous valuable insights into biological systems have been provided by the specific detection of various molecular species. However, molecule-selective detection is often hampered by background fluorescence, such as cell autofluorescence and fluorescence leakage from molecules stained by other dyes. Here we describe a method for all-optical selective imaging of fluorescent nanodiamonds containing nitrogen-vacancy centers (NVCs) for wide-field fluorescence bioimaging. The method is based on the fact that the fluorescence intensity of NVCs strictly depends on the configuration of ground-state electron spins, which can be controlled by changing the pulse recurrence intervals of microsecond excitation laser pulses. Therefore, by using regulated laser pulses, we can oscillate the fluorescence from NVCs in a nanodiamond, while oscillating other optical signals in the opposite phase to NVCs. As a result, we can reconstruct a selective image of a nanodiamond by using a series of oscillated fluorescence images. We demonstrate application of the method to the selective imaging of nanodiamonds in live cells, in microanimals, and on a hippocampal slice culture obtained from a rat. Our approach potentially enables us to achieve high-contrast images of nanodiamond-labeled biomolecules with a signal-to-background ratio improved by up to 100-fold over the standard fluorescence image, thereby providing a more powerful tool for the investigation of molecular dynamics in cells and in vivo.

A key challenge in cardiology is the non-invasive imaging of electric current propagation occurring in the cardiovascular system at an intra-cardiac scale. A promising approach for directly mapping the current dynamics is to monitor the associated stray magnetic field. However, in this magnetic field approach, the spatial resolution deteriorates significantly as the standoff distance between the target and the sensor increases. Existing sensors usually remain relatively far from the target and provide only centimetre-scale resolution because their operating temperature is not biocompatible. Here we demonstrate millimetre-scale magnetocardiography of living rats using a solid-state quantum sensor based on nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond. The essence of the method is a millimetre proximity from the sensor to heart surface, which enhances the cardiac magnetic field to greater than nanoteslas and allows the mapping of these signals with intra-cardiac resolution. From the acquired magnetic images, we also estimate the source electric current vector, flowing from the right atria base via the Purkinje fibre bundle to the left ventricular apex. Our results establish the solid-state quantum sensor's capability to probe cardiac magnetic signals from mammalian animals and reveal their intra-cardiac electrodynamics. This technique will enable the study of the origin and progression of myriad cardiac arrhythmias including flutter, fibrillation, and tachycardia.

<p>The quantitative detection of the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) can help to diagnose cancer metastasis for breast cancer patients because the SLN (i.e., 1st SLN) containing the largest amount of the MNPs has the metastasis with the highest probability. In this study, we have optimized the frequency of alternating current (AC) magnetic fields under the application of direct current (DC) magnetic fields to achieve the highly-sensitive detection, and demonstrated the intraoperative detection of the MNPs accumulated into the SLNs to reduce the injection amount. Considering the noise signal and hysteresis loss, AC fields with 2-5 kHz was effective for the detection. The clinical trials with breast cancer patients, for the MNP detection using a developed device, revealed that the MNP amount of 1st SLN was ~40 ug. We will pursue the further detailed magnetic characteristics of the device and the MNPs for biomedical applications.</p>

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy is a standard staging procedure for early axillary lymph node-negative breast cancer. As an alternative to the currently used radioactive tracers for sentinel lymph node (SLN) detection during the surgical procedure, a number of studies have shown promising results using superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticles. Here, we developed a new handheld, cordless, and lightweight magnetic probe for SPIO detection. METHODS: Resovist (SPIO nanoparticles) were detected by the newly developed handheld probe, and the SLN detection rate was compared to that of the standard radioisotope (RI) method using radioactive colloids (99m Tc) and a blue dye (indigo carmine). This was a multicenter prospective clinical trial that included 220 patients with breast cancer scheduled for sentinel node biopsy after a clinical diagnosis of negative axillary lymph node from three facilities in Japan. RESULTS: Of the 210 patients analyzed, SLN was detected in 94.8% (199/210 cases, 90% confidence interval [CI]) with our magnetic method and in 98.1% (206/210 cases, 90% CI) with the RI method. The magnetic method exceeded the threshold identification rate of 90%. CONCLUSION: This was the first clinical study to use a novel handheld magnetometer to detect SLN, which we demonstrate to be not inferior to the RI method.

Fast magnetic reconnection mechanism triggered by current sheet ejection is studied in plasma merging laboratory experiment with a strong guide field. The current sheet is hardly compressed in the presence of the guide field and slow steady reconnection evolves in the early phase. It then transits to impulsively fast magnetic reconnection when the current sheet is ejected from the X point region. Behavior of the current sheet is investigated in detail by comparison with the fast reconnection case provided by anomalous resistivity.

A novel 2D toroidal plasma flow velocimetry has been developed using tomographic reconstruction technique. The 2D imaging of local (R-Z) toroidal velocity is achieved by the vector tomographic reconstruction technique and multi-chord 2D spectroscopy by 35-channel optical fiber array. Numerical simulation for reconstruction of bi-directional toroidal velocity profile suggests that the cost-effective arrangement of the optical fiber for a toroidal plane is 7. We installed the system with 7 × 5 chords arrangement to the TS-4 device. This system successfully measured 2D bi-directional toroidal velocity profile around X point with 10% accuracy during the counter-helicity magnetic reconnection experiment.

Hollow-structured Fe3O4 nanoparticles, with an increased surface area compared to solid counterparts, show promise in cancer therapy through potential applications in magnetic hyperthermia and drug delivery via encapsulation. This study investigates the shell thickness-dependent heating efficiency of hollow Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a magnetic vortex structure less prone to magnetization reversal. Using the solvothermal method, we maintained a nearly constant inner diameter (230 nm) while varying shell thickness (400 nm, 530 nm, and 720 nm in outer diameter denoted as H400, H530, and H720) by adjusting only the outer diameter through a change in reagent ratio and heating temperature. Under an applied AC magnetic field of 270 kHz, 429.5 Oe, the specific absorption rate (SAR) values of H400, H530, and H720 samples (calculated based on the initial temperature rising rate observed during the time interval of 0 to 30s) were 265.1, 130.2, and 120.9 W/g, respectively. These findings, supported by DC hysteresis loss experiments and micromagnetic simulations of AC hysteresis loss, indicate that particles with thinner shells at the same inner diameter exhibit enhanced heating efficiency due to a stable magnetic vortex structure and significant hysteresis loss. This highlights the potential utility of hollow nanoparticles with thin shells as a particle shape for magnetic hyperthermia.

Magnetoencephalography(MEG)enables non-invasive measurements of magnetic signals that originate from neuronal electrical activities. These measurements can help to assess brain activities, the visual cortex, and ocular muscles. An optically pumped magnetometer(OPM), which does not require a cryogenic cooling apparatus, has been developed as an alternative to su perconducting quantum interference device(SQUID)systems. A diamond nitrogen-vacancy(NV)magnetometer based on quantum magnetic sensing potentially offers superior spatial resolutions and integrations, where the device placement is more flexible and closer to the scalp for revealing brain activities. In this study, we observed and compared an MEG signal of a human steady-state visually evoked field using both SQUID and OPM systems under the application of variable stimulation patterns. We evaluated the optimal stimulation conditions, brain magnetic-field mapping, and the systemʼs dependence on the standoff distance between the sensor and the source of the magnetic field. This evaluation reveals the potential sensing capabilities of diamond NV for detecting bio-magnetic fields.

Wearable intelligent devices for improved safety and comfort have become a hot topic in recent years. The brain-computer interface (BCI) method is typically based on electroencephalography (EEG), enabling users' direct interaction with devices in real time. However, rigid contact through EEG is inconvenient for daily applications. Magnetoencephalography (MEG), a noncontact brain signal measurement with high temporal and spatial resolutions, can be an excellent alternative for developing the BCI. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of wearable magnetometers, such as diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers, and optically pumped magnetometers for potential applications in on-board MEG. For the stimulation setting, we considered the steady-state visual-evoked response (SSVER), which is an essential brain activity for users. To investigate the presence of SSVER and denoising, we optimized the sensor array position and orientation. The results show the potential of intelligent devices for user interaction.

The sensing of bio-magnetic fields originated from biological tissues, such as the brain and heart, enables to elucidate activities of humans and animals. However, due to the very-weak signal of bio-magnetic fields (10-14~10-12 Tesla) compared with geomagnetic fields (4-5 x 10-5 Tesla), a magnetically shielded room (MSR) and active magnetic cancelling coils are required to reduce environmental magnetic noises while sensing. The aim of this study is to develop a movable-MSR with 9-layers of permalloy and to achieve the highest level of shielding factor. The outside and inside dimension of the cubic-shaped MSR is 1000 and 300 mm for biomedical applications with small animals such as rats. We report the magnetic shielding performances against constant and alternating current magnetic fields by using highly-sensitive magnetic sensors (e.g., optically-pumped magnetometer and diamond nitrogen-vacancy center). As future works, we demonstrate high accuracy measurements of bio-magnetic fields such as magnetoencephalography and magnetocardiography.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has been widely used for research and clinical applications of neurological disorders. Existing methods for designing TMS coils are either based on researchers experience or based on optimize the combination of basis functions in specific surface like plane and sphere, which cannot be used when consider the curve of head. We want to develop a numerical method capable of optimizing TMS coils shape on arbitrary surfaces. In this work, We first derive the relationship between the induced electric field and the stream function analytically. Then we solve the stream function directly from the target electric field by Tikhonov regularization. Finally, the corresponding coil shape can be obtained by drawing the contour lines of the stream function. The result of coil shape is similar to fig-8 coil on the flat plane, which illustrates the effectiveness of our method.

Sentinel lymph node biopsy using Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) is a promising method for breast cancer treatment. However, due to too much SPIONs accumulated in the injection position, a large susceptibility artifact arises in the Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI), causing information around the injection position cannot be acquired. In order to reduce this artifact, studies were carried out on clinic MRI system to find a superior MRI sequence upon Spin Echo, Gradient Echo and Ultra-Short TE sequences also with optimizing the parameter setting including echo time(TE) and voxel size. Concentration of Fe in the sample we used is 27.875mg/ml,The result shows Spin Echo Sequence with short TE provide image with smallest area of artifact.

<p>Magnetic immunostaining can significantly promote the immunoreaction using a magnet and antibody-labeled fluorescent ferrite (FF) beads and diagnose the cancer metastasis during operation. We proposed a convex magnet for uniformly attracting antibody-labeled FF beads toward antigens on an entire tissue section and evaluated the magnet configuration by the curvature radius in the magnet surface. In numerical analysis result, the optimal curvature radius was 55 mm.</p>

    &lt;p&gt;Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) using magnetic tracers is a promising technique in the treatment of breast cancer to evaluate the presence of metastasis in sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs). Selection of the first SLN, which contains the largest amount of iron of magnetic nanoparticles, in some resected nodes can help to investigate the metastasis because cancer most likely metastasizes to that node. However, iron distributions in SLNs of varied sizes (generally 3-20 mm) are unidentified.In this study, we developed a device can quantify iron amount in SLNs without the dependencies of the distributions and sizes. The device, currently, quantified the iron in magnetic phantoms that is the size of 3-20 mm with varied iron-distributions, within the error of 10%. These results indicate the developed device is useful for quantifying the magnetic nanoparticles accumulating in SLNs.&lt;/p&gt;

The magnetic technique using a magnetic tracer and handheld magnetic probe with permanent magnet can be alternatives to the radioisotope technique as a noninvasive promising method for sentinel lymph node biopsy. To identify one sentinel lymph node, 5 mm spatial resolution of the probe is required because sentinel lymph nodes are often clustered in axillary lymph nodes. The aim of this study is to demonstrate a spatial resolution of the magnetic probe by a sensitivity mapping measurement with high spatial resolutions. The longitudinal sensitivity and lateral resolution of the probe was approximately 8 mm and 4 mm, respectively, for 5 μL of the magnetic tracer (Resovist). The probe discriminated the one phantom from two phantoms separated 4 mm in the lateral direction. These results indicate that the magnetic probe with the permanent magnet has the ability to identify one sentinel lymph node from the node clusters in actual usages.

This paper introduces an information processing architecture named ROS-TMS for informationally structured environment. This architecture enables to handle several practical service tasks such as state estimation in a room using accumulated information in a database, and automatic planning and execution for suitable service tasks. As an application of the proposed ROS-TMS, we present an emergency detection and alert system using distributed sensors and a service robot.

The type IIc Na+-dependent phosphate cotransporter (NaPi-IIc) is specifically targeted to, and expressed on, the apical membrane of renal proximal tubular cells and mediates phosphate transport. In the present study, we investigated the signals that determine apical expression of NaPi-IIc with a focus on the role of the N- and the C-terminal tails of mouse NaPi-IIc in renal epithelial cells [opossum kidney (OK) and Madin-Darby canine kidney cells]. Wild-type NaPi-IIc, the cotransporter NaPi-IIa, as well as several IIa-IIc chimeras and deletion mutants, were fused to enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP), and their cellular localization was analyzed in polarized renal epithelial cells by confocal microscopy and by cell-surface biotinylation. Fluorescent EGFP-fused NaPi-IIc transporter proteins are correctly expressed in the apical membrane of OK cells. The apical expression of N-terminal deletion mutants (deletion of N-terminal 25, 50, or 69 amino acids) was not affected by truncation. In contrast, C-terminal deletion mutants (deletion of C-terminal 45, 50, or 62 amino acids) did not have correct apical expression. A more detailed mutational analysis indicated that a domain (amino acids WLHSL) in the cytoplasmic C terminus is required for apical expression of NaPi-IIc in renal epithelial cells. We conclude that targeting of NaPi-IIc to the apical cell surface is regulated by a unique amino acid motif in the cytoplasmic C-terminal domain.

Recent studies have demonstrated that klotho protein plays a role in calcium/phosphate homeostasis. The goal of the present study was to investigate the regulation of Na-Pi cotransporters in klotho mutant (kl/kl) mice. The kl/kl mice displayed hyperphosphatemia, high plasma 1,25(OH)2D3 levels, increased activity of the renal and intestinal sodium-dependent Pi cotransporters, and increased levels of the type IIa, type IIb, and type IIc transporter proteins compared with wild-type mice. Interestingly, transcript levels of the type IIa/type IIc transporter mRNA abundance, but not transcripts levels of type IIb transporter mRNA, were markedly decreased in kl/kl mice compared with wild-type mice. Furthermore, plasma fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) levels were 150-fold higher in kl/kl mice than in wild-type mice. Feeding of a low-Pi diet induced the expression of klotho protein and decreased plasma FGF23 levels in kl/kl mice, whereas colchicine treatment experiments revealed evidence of abnormal membrane trafficking of the type IIa transporter in kl/kl mice. Finally, feeding of a low-Pi diet resulted in increased type IIa Na-Pi cotransporter protein in the apical membrane in the wild-type mice, but not in kl/kl mice. These results indicate that hyperphosphatemia in klotho mice is due to dysregulation of expression and trafficking of the renal type IIa/IIc transporters rather than to intestinal Pi uptake.

It is expected that the control the magnetic field at micro wave range for MRI application results in super resolution of MRI images. In this study, we have investigated the structures which can focus the micro wave range. In though the simulations, we found the optimum structure to enhance the magnetic field. In addition, we confirmed the designed structure resulted in the magnetic field enhancement. Finally, we succeeded to confirm the fabricated structure resulted in the improvement of the contrast in the MRI images.

Low frequency waves are excited in the high beta region of magnetically confined plasmas by magnetic reconnection during plasma merging process. These waves partly contribute to the conversion from magnetic energy to ion thermal energy. When the reconnection includes significant guide magnetic field perpendicular to the reconnection magnetic field, monotonic large-amplitude waves are excited as kinetic Alven waves. However, these waves are not dominant factors providing the observed ion heating. On the other hand, when there is no guide field, very low fewquency waves are globally excited. These shear Alfven waves directly drive ion flows and eventually provide conversion from magnetic to ion thermal energy. It is concluded that these very low frequency waves work for the heating method for high beta plasmas.
