Abstract This study presents a thermodynamic analysis of the behavior of oxygen (O) during the early stage of solidification in titanium–rare-earth (Ti–RE) alloys in the presence of rare-earth fluorides (REF 3 ) and rare-earth oxyfluorides ( $${\text{RE } }_{x}{ { \text{O } } }_{y}{ { \text{F } } }_{z}$$ ). The partitioning of rare-earth elements (RE) and O between the melt and $$\upbeta $$ -Ti that precipitates at 1943 K (1670 $$^{\circ }$$ C) during cooling of Ti-rich Ti–RE alloys was estimated using thermodynamic data. The present analysis provides thermodynamic trends rather than exact quantitative predictions, owing to uncertainties in high-temperature thermodynamic data near 1943 K (1670 $$^{\circ }$$ C). For example, when molten Ti–Y alloy with Y concentration of 1 mass pct (10,000 mass ppm) is cooled, $$\upbeta $$ -Ti containing 0.2 mass pct Y (2000 mass ppm Y) is obtained. In addition, when solidification proceeds in equilibrium with liquid YF 3 and solid Y 5 O 4 F 7 , the resulting $$\upbeta $$ -Ti contains approximately 0.053 mass pct O (530 mass ppm O). These results indicate that combining RE–REF 3 flux deoxidation with solidification refining offers a potential route to producing high-purity solid Ti with both low RE and low O concentrations directly from molten Ti. Consequently, this technique provides a promising approach for advancing upgrade recycling (upcycling) technologies for Ti scrap.

Abstract Titanium (Ti) scrap is attracting increased interest as a circular resource, but its widespread use is constrained by oxygen contamination that degrades material properties. Currently, no effective deoxidation method has been established at the industrial scale for recycling Ti scrap. In this study, a novel high-temperature, solid-state deoxidation process is proposed, using rare-earth metals (RE = Y, La, Ce, Nd) as deoxidants and their corresponding fluorides as fluxes to reduce oxygen potential in the system through the formation of rare-earth oxyfluorides (REOF). Thermodynamic calculations demonstrate that several chemical equilibria such as Y/YOF/YF 3 can reduce the oxygen concentrations in solid Ti to 200 mass ppm or less at 1900 K, well below the 500 mass ppm threshold required for industrial applications. Kinetic modeling for oxygen diffusion in solid Ti indicates that the oxygen concentration of a 40 mm-diameter Ti sphere can be lowered from 4200 to below 600 mass ppm within 6 hours at 1900 K. This deoxidation rate is over 5000 times higher than that achieved at conventional processing temperatures around 1300 K, demonstrating the potential of this high-temperature approach to produce low-oxygen Ti feedstock suitable for remelting and industrial use.

Abstract Development of an efficient deoxidation method for titanium (Ti) is desired to recycle oxygen (O)-contaminated Ti scrap. In this study, the utilization of thulium (Tm) as a deoxidant for Ti in various halide fluxes was investigated. Tm is a rare-earth metal, which is a by-product of other rare-earth metals with high demand and has limited industrial uses. When NaCl or KCl flux was installed in the deoxidation experiments, the impurity oxygen in Ti was removed to the concentrations of 140–590 mass ppm O, which are lower than that achieved under the equilibrium between Tm and Tm2O3 (290–530 mass ppm O). The results show that the nominal activity of the deoxidation product (Tm2O3) was lowered by the presence of halide fluxes in the reaction systems. The combination of Tm and halide fluxes in a new deoxidation technique holds promising potential for both accelerating the Ti recycling and exploring novel applications for Tm. Graphical Abstract

Abstract As the demand for titanium (Ti) continues to grow, so too does the use of Ti scrap, underscoring the need for innovative techniques for the efficient removal of oxygen (O) impurities from Ti scrap. Despite the immense challenge of directly removing oxygen from Ti–O solid solutions and the current lack of industrially applicable deoxidation methods, the current work explores a groundbreaking approach to address this issue. The thermodynamic analysis of a new technique for eliminating oxygen dissolved in solid Ti was conducted, leveraging the deoxidation properties of rare earth metals (REMs) such as Sc, Y, and La. This cutting-edge method relies on the in-situ production of REMs through the metallothermic reduction of REM halides. It was shown that Sc or Y metal can be synthesized via the reduction of ScCl3 by Mg or YCl3 by Li or Na, respectively. Ti with oxygen concentrations below 100 mass ppm can be obtained by leveraging the deoxidation properties of the Sc and Y metals produced in situ during the metallothermic reduction process, which contribute to deoxidation through their subsequent oxychloride-forming reactions. Employing REM halides in tandem with Li, Na, and Mg enables the efficient removal of oxygen impurities from Ti, even though these reactive metals have only weak deoxidation properties for Ti on their own. Remarkably, the proposed technique achieves oxygen concentrations significantly lower than those obtained using Ca metal as a deoxidant. In the future, this pioneering deoxidation method could be used to reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption during Ti production while promoting resource circulation as a key technology for Ti recycling.

Abstract Titanium (Ti) is an attractive material, abundant in nature and possessing superior mechanical and chemical properties. However, its widespread use is significantly hampered by the strong affinity between titanium and oxygen (O), resulting in elevated manufacturing costs during the refining, melting, and casting processes. The current work introduces a high-throughput technique that effectively reduces the oxygen content in molten titanium to a level suitable for structural material applications (1000 mass ppm, equivalent to 0.1 mass%). This technique aspires to streamline the mass production of titanium by seamlessly integrating the refining, melting, and casting processes. The developed method leverages the high affinity of rare-earth metals, such as yttrium (Y), for oxygen. This method utilizes the formation reaction of their oxyhalides (YOF) to directly remove oxygen from liquid titanium, resulting in titanium with a significantly reduced oxygen content of 200 mass ppm. This technique enables the direct conversion of titanium oxide feeds into low-oxygen titanium without requiring conversion into intermediate compounds. Additionally, this process offers a pathway for the upgrade recycling of high-oxygen-content titanium scrap directly into low-oxygen titanium. Consequently, this technology holds the potential to dramatically lower titanium production costs, thereby facilitating its more widespread utilization.

    More details Close

A significant amount of titanium scrap containing oxygen is generated during the titanium fabrication process. This study aimed to develop a technique to remove oxygen from titanium using cerium, a rare earth metal, for recycling oxygen-containing titanium scrap. Experimental investigations were conducted to remove oxygen from titanium using cerium in various chlorides. The results clarified the oxygen removal limit, the effect of chlorides, and the thermodynamic data of a cerium compound. Furthermore, a new reaction mechanism for oxygen removal from titanium utilizing vapors of metal and chloride was proposed.
