    Abstract Surface tension plays an important role in the micrometer-sized fluid interface, but only a few methods can measure it remotely. On spatially restricted surfaces, plural eigenmodes of thermally induced capillary wave resonance are observed, and their resonant frequencies depend on the surface tension. Incident laser light is scattered by the capillary wave with Doppler shift. The resonant peaks corresponding to the eigenmodes are observed in the power spectra. In this study, a spectrum fitting algorithm utilizing the theoretical frequency ratio of the plural eigenmodes is proposed. In addition, the position dependence of the fitting quality on the position along the diameter axis was also investigated. As a result, the algorithm worked well in the circular center area. This algorithm and knowledge will be valuable for various applications such as environmental and biological surface science.

    In the first fiscal year of this research project, I successfully completed the instrumental setup, performed preliminary experiments and collected scientific data on the surface tension of spherical water droplets exposed to surfactant. The early stages of the project focus on the instrument creation and optimization as well as collection of preliminary data. <BR> In the early phase of the project, the scientific instrument necessary for collecting raw experimental data was obtained (a quasi-elastic laser scattering system), and the instrumental configuration was studied and refined to obtain reliable results. <BR> The initially collected experimental results focused on the characterization of surface tension properties of spherical aqueous droplets on a one-dimensional substrate. These initial results have shown new information on the behavior of surface tension at the micrometer dimension and will serve as the basis for new studies on the topic.
