    Introduction Owing to the increased transmissibility of the Omicron virus, Shanghai implemented a citywide lockdown in 2022. This measure disrupted the normal functioning of the city’s food system and led to incidents related to food insecurity within the city. To mitigate these challenges, the local government and various stakeholders devised various solutions. Methods In this context, we adopted a root cause analysis to report the disruptions caused by the lockdown on Shanghai’s food system. Results According to disruptions, we listed the challenges faced by Shanghai’ food system and solutions implemented by the government and stakeholders. Discussion We discussed the underlying reasons behind food system disruptions and listed advantages of Shanghai’s solutions. We further scrutinized the sustainability of the solutions implemented in Shanghai. Finally, we discussed how to promote the urban food system resilience building based on research findings. The findings of this research are anticipated to provide valuable insights for other areas that may encounter similar challenges in the future while fortify their urban food systems.

    Purpose Nature’s contribution to people (NCP) is a concept that specifically recognizes the relationship of “humans and the natural environment” similarly to concepts of “cultural landscapes” and consistent to “heritage.” These concepts are essential in incorporating a diverse range of stakeholders from different scales, which is important for policy and practice. The paper aims to review the existing peer-reviewed papers in the Philippines, using meta-analysis and systematic review. We addressed the significant interlinkages that help facilitate the transition and strengthen the correlation of cultural ecosystem services (CES) and NCP in a cultural landscape setting. Design/methodology/approach To distinguish and support claims for NCP from CES, we conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review based on the 30-existing peer-reviewed articles on the Philippine cultural ES in the lenses of “heritage” and “cultural landscape.” Findings The results generated a few numbers of the Philippine CES studies, yet it has increased cumulatively year by year consistent with previous international studies. We found that most studies are focused on topics associated with “Indigenous People, Ancestral Domains, Protected Areas/Landscapes, and Indigenous and Local Knowledge” on the linkages concurrently distinguishing NCP to CES, and may signify stronger economic valuation in uncovering the sociocultural dimensions of these scholarships through its relational values in the lenses of cultural landscape and heritage. Research limitations/implications The authors limited the search to peer-reviewed journal articles published from online databases and did not consider Philippine University based and local publications to have a systematic review. This is to prevent underestimating the vast amount of CES literature and avoid gray literature that is not peer-reviewed; hence, being able to analyze and produce focused, yet, credible data. Practical implications In a generalizing perspective, NCP 1, 6, 8, 12, 13, 15, 16, 17 and 18 have the most realized positive correlations of the reporting categories to the Philippine CES studies. The majority of the context-specific perspective NCP has strong conceptual claims in the existing Philippine CES literature through the studies’ variables aside from NCP 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 11 that are still mostly in the nature of generalizing perspective. Originality/value In conclusion, our results imply that the previous and existing CES studies in the Philippines harbor more attributes presented by the NCP reporting categories. This is deemed more suitable, and may signify stronger economic valuation in uncovering the sociocultural dimensions of these scholarships through its relational values in the lenses of cultural landscape and heritage.

    <jats:p>While the relationship between eating habits and mental health has been widely studied, there is limited research focusing on college students during emergency situations such as pandemics. We conducted an online questionnaire survey to address this gap. Clustering analysis was applied to identify students’ eating habits, which are possibly more complex than traditional eating habits. Based on the identified eating habits, the students were separated into five groups. We evaluated the relationship between eating habits and mental health in these five groups using University Personality Inventory scores. Based on the results, the largest group—corresponding to slightly less than half of the participants—had the highest vegetable intake and mental health levels. This aligns with findings from numerous prior studies. However, our novel discovery was the presence of another group within those with higher vegetable intake, who had lower levels of mental health. Conversely, a group with lower vegetable intake had higher levels of mental health; remarkably, students in this group frequently consumed soft drinks, suggesting that, during the COVID-19 emergency, indulgent food and drinks may have played a role in enhancing mental health.</jats:p>

    Best–Worst Scaling (BWS) was applied to assess Chinese consumer preferences for battery electric vehicle (BEV). Although BEV is becoming familiar to Chinese consumers, the share of passenger electric vehicles for yearly sales in 2020 is still 5.8%. BWS has advantages in obtaining rich information on preferences by identifying “best” and “worst” options. An online questionnaire survey was conducted in mainland China in January 2021, and 2064 samples of Chinese consumers were collected. A BWS object case was applied in this study to compare with the previous Japanese case study. Results of the BWS object case revealed that maximum driving range and convenient charging facilities were the most important factors. Conversely, operation costs, the reduction of carbon dioxide and air pollutants were less important factors. Random parameter logit estimates with interaction-terms demonstrated the preference heterogeneity of attributes except for driving performance and battery life and warranty. The results suggest that Chinese consumer preferences and purchasing behaviors are much diverse. Government programs and companies’ efforts to support financially for increasing charging availability and driving range are required to promote the diffusion of BEV in China.

    <p> There is a growing concern that wild bears encroach into cities in Japan, which has adverse impacts on agriculture and human safety. This paper theoretically analyzes the socially optimal land use policies, such as regulating total area of residential and agricultural land and controlling the number of plants that is a main food source of bears, considering the following three externalities: (a) ecosystem services, (b) damages to agricultural products by bears, and (c) farmers' fear of encountering bears. We find that, even if there exist these three externalities, the equilibrium size of residential area is consistent with the social optimum if bears do not enter the residential area, and that the optimal farmland size could be larger or smaller than the equilibrium size, which depends on the tradeoff between the loss in ecosystem services from expanding farmland and the decrease in the number of bears that have damages to the agricultural products and the farmers' fear of encountering bears.</p>

    Although information technology (IT) is common in intensive farming, it is uncommon in extensive farming. In this study, focusing on the effectiveness of information sharing, we applied IT to sugarcane, a major crop in the southwestern islands of Japan, as an example of extensive farming. We developed a mobile application termed "SugarNavi" to support harvest efficiency. Using SugarNavi on a smartphone or tablet, operators of harvesters upload their working locations and operation status to a server, which then changes the schedule of harvest plan according to location, status, and weather conditions. Typically, the information shared by farmers, harvest operators, and sugar refinery staff varies with the progress of harvest. This variation can limit the shared information. Instead, the functions of SugarNavi, information visualization and sharing, could be used to achieve consensus on the harvest schedule. Testing of SugarNavi by users allowed us to identify problems that we will face in actual use.

    Marine pollution by red clay outflow from agricultural land is a serious problem at Okinawa. To prevent the outflow, there are several ways that can be done by farmers who grow sugarcane, i.e. construction of green belt, green manure and so on. These methods, however, charge new cost to the farmers. Therefore it is important to elucidate how incomes of farmers change by the new cost. In this paper we analyze data collected from 301 farmers at Ishigaki, Okinawa and find a candidate factor that could affect famers income. As a result, the farmers who have a number of agricultural fields distributed separately face to more negative profit. In addition, this preventing of the outflow leads to improve the marine pollutions. Hence, we finally perform simulation study to explore the possibility whether we can give financial supports to famers by the WTP of the tourists who aim to play marine sports at Ishigaki. This simulation is performed based on the method of benefit transfer from the results of the research at Iriomote Island, which located next to Ishigaki Island. In conclusion, we suggest establishing a new cyclic economics-environmental system.

    近年,クマなどの野生動物がエサを求めて都市へ侵入し,人を襲う被害が増加している.これには都市拡大と温暖化による森林内の木の実不作などが影響している.また,感染症を引き起こすウイルスを動物が運ぶことも多い.そして,ウイルスの発現にも温暖化が影響することが懸念されている.本研究では,都市化や温暖化によってもたらされる都市住民と生物の接触が引き起こすコンフリクトを経済学と生態学の両学問の統合を行い,その解決案を探ることを目的としている. 研究実績としては,Yoshida & Kono (2020)が用いたLotka-Volterra モデルを子供と大人の2世代に生物種を分割したLotka-Volterra モデルに置き換えた.この分割により,子供と大人の生態の違いを反映することができる.本年度構築したモデルでは子育てエリアを特定化しなかったものの,子育てエリアが都市内や森林に散らばるとメタ個体群モデルとなる.すなわち,局所的集団(パッチと呼ばれる)が多数点在し,それぞれのパッチでは生成と消滅を繰り返しながら生物が存続するモデルでなる. 分析結果として,温暖化が進み森林に動物の食物が豊富になるものの,それ以上に動物が増加する時期が来ることで,結果として動物の頭数が減少するというパラドックスを示すことができている.また,その現象における子供と大人の頭数の変化も表現できている.子供と大人を分けていることで,その生態の違い(行動範囲や警戒心の違い)を考慮して,最適な駆除計画を考えることができる.今後は,構築した生態系モデルと都市経済モデルの統合モデルの動学の解の性質について,パラメータを変化させて把握する研究を行う.

    We applied IT mainly focus on the effectiveness of the information sharing to sugarcane. We developed “SugarNavi”, a mobile application, to support harvest being more efficient. Using “SugarNavi” by an operator of harvester, the working location and operation status are uploaded to the server, in which these information are unified and visualized. With a support from “SugarNavi”, appropriate and smooth rearrangement of harvesters also become possible. We next investigate the information of harvest’s situation shared; the information varies according to the progress of harvest. As a result, in many cases, limited information is shared by a part of them, and it is suggested that the function of information visualization and sharing in “SugarNavi” could be applied for consensus forming for the order of harvest. Finally, in this experiment, since all persons concerned used “SugarNavi”, we clarified problems that we face with when “SugarNavi” begins to be used actually.

    気候変動問題に取り組む研究は、マクロレベルの将来シミュレーション、温暖化緩和・適応策のシナリオ研究、ミクロレベルの気候変動対策シナリオ・ロードマップ研究等があるが、これらは個別に実施され、有機的連携がない、という問題があった。そのため本研究では、環境、農業、水、エネルギーの工学と経済学をバックグラウンドとする教員が研究科の枠を超え、研究蓄積を結集して、気候変動の問題に、マクロとミクロをつないで取り組むための学内における研究体制基盤を構築する。具体的なアプローチとしては、長期将来の社会経済シナリオを共通の前提とし、例えば食糧・水・エネルギーなどに関する将来シミュレーションを通じてマクロレベルでのバイオマスエネルギーや食料などの姿を得る。それらの情報をもとに、いくつかの国、県、市町村など、ミクロレベルでとりあげ、温暖化に起因する災害による被害や、脱温暖化対策の検討、例えば農業における被害や適応策の実情把握を実施することで、現実に基づいた信頼性の高い妥当性の検証を行う。従来、個別に行われてきた研究を、異分野融合の相互連携でマクロとミクロをつないで取り組むことにより、今後の国際的研究への貢献につなげる。 本研究により、社会・環境理工学や工学等の学院への配属と目される若手教員の連携を図り、教育改革による新たな組織体制作りに貢献できると考える。更に、国内外のマクロとミクロをつなぐ環境・エネルギー研究に関連する学会の開催誘致活動を行う。実際に開催されれば、環境研究に関する本学の知名度認知度が国内外に高まり、優秀な学生の獲得が期待される。発展の究極目標は「モノづくりの東工大」と並ぶ、「文理融合の東工大」という、昔年からの教育理念である東工大ブランドの創出を目指すものである。
