    The surface chirality was investigated in magnetoelectrodeposition (MED) of copper films on micro-disc electrodes with the diameters of 100 and 25 µm. The MED was conducted in the magnetic fields of 1–5 T, which were parallel or antiparallel to the ionic currents. In the case of 100 µm-electrodes, the MED films prepared in 2 and 3 T exhibited odd chirality for the magnetic field polarity, as expected in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) vortex model. However, the films prepared in the higher fields of 4 and 5 T exhibited breaking of odd chirality. In the case of the 25 µm-electrode, the broken odd chirality was observed in 2 and 3 T. These results indicate that the strong vertical MHD flows induce the breaking of odd chirality. The mapping of chiral symmetry on the axes of the magnetic field and electrode diameter demonstrate that the odd chirality could be easily broken by the fluctuation of micro-MHD vortices.

    <p>The magnetic-field-induced blend films, poly(L-lactide)(PLLA10) (Mn = 1.0 × 105) and poly(DL-lactide) (Mw = 1.0 × 104 (PDLLA1) and 1.0 × 105 (PDLLA10)) were prepared in isothermal process under the magnetic-field 10 T. The effects of amorphous region, i.e., molecular weight of PDLLA effect on crystallization and orientation of PLLA in the films were investigated using wide-angle X-ray diffraction and polarizing microscopy. The crystallinity of each films showed 60% at crystallization growth time tc = 30 hrs irrespective of PDLLA molecular weight. The degree of orientation of PLLA10/PDLLA10 film increased with increasing tc. We concluded that the blending with amorphous high-molecular-weigh PDLLA and crystallization in an applied high magnetic field is effective to achieve the PLLA film that has higher crystallinity and orientation.</p>

    Practical superconducting wires are designed with a composite structure to meet the desired engineering characteristics by expert selection of materials and design of the architecture. In practice, the local strain exerted on the superconducting component influences the electromagnetic properties. Here, recent progress in methods used to measure the local strain in practical superconducting wires and conductors using quantum beam techniques is introduced. Recent topics on the strain dependence of critical current are reviewed for three major practical wires: ITER-Nb&lt;sub&gt;3&lt;/sub&gt;Sn strand, DI-BSCCO wires and REBCO tapes.

    To investigate the size and shape effects of magnetic and electric properties for bismuth nanoparticles, thermal and time conditions and the additives were optimized in the polyol process. We have developed an apparatus that allows observation of the transient rotational motion of the fine particles under high magnetic field in order to determine the anisotropic magnetic susceptibilities. The susceptibility was determined with accuracy for both the nano-plates and nano-spheres and was found to increase monotonically with the particle size along c-axis. A PMMA composite, in which bismuth nano-plates or spheres were dispersed and magnetically oriented, showed large difference between transmittances for two polarized lights and also large birefringence due to difference in their optical constants.

    A new furnace with a transparent glass heater has been developed for diamagnetic susceptibility measurements using a magnetic levitation technique. This furnace allows sensitive and contactless measurements of the susceptibility change and observation of containerless melting and solidification processes up to 300°C, because it is easy to observe a sample from outside of the furnace during heating in high magnetic fields.

    Strong gradient magnetic fields allow levitation of diamagnetic materials against the gravity. This levitation state is equivalent to the microgravity because the magnetic force counterbalances the gravity. The magnetic levitation is thus expected to provide a novel technique for materials processing. Containerless melting is one of the most practical and useful applications of magnetic levitation. The design of a magnetic levitation furnace requires several specific features : The first is to heat samples in high magnetic fields. The second is to install the furnace in a confined narrow space in the hybrid magnet with a 52 mm bore. The third is to observe the behavior of a levitating sample in the furnace. A CO_2 laser furnace is one of heating methods satisfying above requirements. The laser beam is not affected by magnetic fields, and the local irradiation just on a sample allows use of a CCD camera near the sample. Laser furnaces, however, have also disadvantages in heating a levitating sample. When a sample was heated inhomogeneously and thermal conductivity of the sample was very small, the sample was partially heated, causing thermal decomposition. When the diamagnetic susceptibility of a sample increased with increasing temperature, the sample moved upward and lost the horizontal stable position, resulting in a contact with the wall of a magnet bore. We developed a new magnetic levitation furnace. An electric furnace was employed to get homogeneous heating. For the observation of the sample behavior in the furnace, a heat-proof bore scope was used. This new furnace enabled to observe the levitating sample up to 800℃ in the hybrid magnet. We performed containerless melting experiments of a cycloolefin polymer, and succeeded in preparing a spherical sample. We investigated the heat transfer behavior in water under the magnetic levitation conditions and found that strong gradient magnetic fields considerably suppress thermal convection.
