We study the occurrence of crease in an elastomer under three loading conditions from both computational and physical points of view. A two-dimensional finite element analysis, including a perturbation force-based approach, is performed to detect the stable creased state, where the crease formation is completed. A mesh convergence study for the energy release and crease depth in the creased state provides a guideline for the finite element mesh requisite for predicting the occurrence of crease. We also visualize the mesh convergence for the critical creasing onset by plotting the set of compressive strain and mesh resolution at the point where the energy release is zero. In addition, the present evaluation method of the surface tension using the energy release and surface area change for an elastomer with a traction-free surface yields a good prediction for the creasing onset delayed by surface tension without additional numerical implementations or adjustment parameters. This facilitates the comprehensive study of the creasing onset delayed by the surface tension under general loading conditions. The results reveal that tensile deformation in the out-of-plane direction encourages the retardation of the creasing onset via the extension of the width and the energy emission. We further demonstrate that energetically preferential crease interval can be used to evaluate the spacing between creases delayed by moderate surface tension.

We propose a new framework for creating a surrogate model of computational homogenization for elastoplastic composite materials that serves as a homogenized constitutive law for decoupled two-scale analysis. Two key ingredients of the proposed surrogate modeling are the introduction of a variable representing the macroscopic strain history along with the macroscopic strain and the application of radial basis function (RBF) interpolation. Not only the coefficients of the RBF but also the type of its function form are considered hyperparameters and are determined by applying an optimization algorithm. In the offline process, numerical material tests (NMTs) are performed on a unit cell consisting of multiple elastoplastic materials subjected to various patterns of macroscopic strain to create a database that stores the discrete relationships between variables representing macroscopic deformation states with the macroscopic stresses. Then, RBF interpolation is applied to represent the macroscopic stress in a continuous function with these input data as independent variables. In the online process, this function is used as a macroscopic constitutive law in the macroscopic analysis, which can be followed by localization analysis using an arbitrary macroscopic strain history if necessary.

This paper introduces a method for the bottom-up fabrication of bio-inspired hierarchical patterns having tunable anisotropic wetting properties. The method exploits the surface instability of bilayers comprising a gold nanofilm attached to a substantially prestretched elastomer substrate. Upon film formation, highly aligned wrinkles spontaneously form on the surface owing to the surface instability driven by the compressive residual stress in the film. Thereafter, uniaxial compressive strain is applied to the film by prestretch relaxation of the substrate, which generates an array of high-aspect-ratio ridges on the surface. Consequently, hierarchical patterns comprising unidirectionally aligned ridges covered with wrinkles are obtained. Water droplets placed on surfaces having the aforementioned hierarchical patterns show direction-dependent contact angles, resulting in elongated shapes, which indicates the presence of anisotropic wetting properties. The magnitude of wetting anisotropy can be tuned by simple control of the applied compressive strain and film thickness.

A variationally consistent formulation is presented to devise a method of fully implicit analysis for predicting thermo-mechanically coupled behavior of thermosetting resin subjected to cure in finite strain theory. To characterize the finite thermo-viscoelasticity coupled with cure kinetics, the dual dissipation potential (DDP) is originally defined in the thermodynamically consistent formulation, which begins with the definition of stored energy. The governing equations are derived as stationary conditions of the relevant total energy rate potential containing internal energy, and viscous and curing DDPs, and then discretized in time and space in order. In the temporal discretization process within a time interval, we utilize the function form of the equilibrium temperature obtained from the Legendre–Fenchel transformation of internal energy. The obtained time discretized equations are spatially discretized by means of the standard finite element method. The present formulation results in a fully implicit algorithm with separate systems of governing equations that can be solved in a monolithic manner. Two representative numerical examples are presented to demonstrate that, while allowing relatively large time increments, the devised analysis method provides a more realistic prediction than the previous method formulated within the framework of small strain theory.

This study presents a gradient damage model for ductile fracture, in which the damage hardening modulus is degraded by the accumulation of plastic deformation and the volume expansion caused by negative hydrostatic pressure. The proposed model fulfills the thermodynamic requirements, and the governing equations are derived from energy minimization principles. Two parameter studies are carried out to confirm the basic performance of the proposed model, in which some typical ductile fracture responses are demonstrated by changing parameters for degrading the damage hardening modulus. Also, a series of numerical experiments are presented to reveal the ability of the proposed model to successfully simulate the fracture tests of advanced high strength steel sheets with different tensile strengths. It is indeed confirmed by the close agreement with experimental results that the proposed model is capable of realizing the breaking elongation, the transitional behavior from unstable to stable crack propagations, and the corresponding load–displacement curves. Also, the model successfully reproduces and predicts the crack initiation positions in notched specimens with different notch radii.

Swelling of a gel film attached to a soft substrate can induce surface instability, which results in the formation of highly ordered patterns such as wrinkles and folds. This phenomenon has been exploited to fabricate functional devices and rationalize morphogenesis. However, obtaining centimeter-scale patterns without immersing the film in a solvent remains challenging. Here, we show that wrinkles with wavelengths of up to a few centimeters can be spontaneously created during the open-air fabrication of film-substrate bilayers of polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels. When the film of an aqueous pregel solution of acrylamide prepared on the PAAm hydrogel substrate undergoes open-air gelation, hexagonally packed dimples initially emerge on the surface, which later evolve into randomly oriented wrinkles. The formation of such self-organized patterns can be attributed to the surface instability resulting from autonomous water transport in the bilayer system during open-air fabrication. The temporal evolution of the patterns can be ascribed to an increase in overstress in the hydrogel film due to continued water uptake. The wrinkle wavelength can be controlled in the centimeter-scale range by adjusting the film thickness of the aqueous pregel solution. Our self-wrinkling method provides a simple mechanism for the generation of swelling-induced centimeter-scale wrinkles without requiring an external solvent, which is unachievable with conventional approaches.

A core issue in structural multiple bifurcations (MB) in computational engineering is to identify all existing branching paths emanating from the MB point in compound stability problems. The governing MB equations (MBEs) will commonly result in a set of three (or occasionally two) polynomial equations in asymptotic stability theory when the singular stiffness matrix is subject to a rank deficiency of two (i.e., two null eigenvalues). However, no general solution strategy has been established to solve MBEs so far. This study proposes innovative graphical solution ideas to intuitively visualize multiple path branching in 2D- and 3D-spaces of variables. Although the graphical skills display real solutions in specified search areas on a graphical monitor, it is not assured that “all” real roots are detected. The total number of identified real and complex roots of simultaneous equations must be generally consistent with that predicted algebraically to ensure that all real and complex roots are captured in MB. In computational algebra, Gröbner bases are employed to convert a set of polynomial equations into single recursively solvable equations and can be plugged into visualization steps. Therefore, Gröbner bases and graphical skills are complementary and can be applied to numerically solve a set of plate/shell structural MBEs.

Based on the study on characteristic features of existing crack phase-field (PF) models for ductile fracture, we propose a new model endowed with elastic and plastic damage variables. In the review part, the emphasis is placed on the plastic driving force and degrading fracture toughness that enable PF models to represent damage evolution in elastoplastic materials. Attention is also paid to the damage evolution tendency in terms of the definition of the yield function. Based on the reviewed features, we originally formulate the proposed model, which separately accommodates two damage variables for elasticity and plasticity. Its constitutive work density consists of elastic, plastic hardening, and damage hardening components. Evolution laws for plasticity and damage are derived by using separate threshold (yield) functions while having similar formats so that those for damage hold variational and thermodynamic consistencies. Also, the proposed model is equipped with thresholds and coefficients to control the amount of damage driving force. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the characteristic features of the proposed model and the ability to mimic the typical fracture behavior of elastoplastic materials.

In this study, we investigate the diversity of the bifurcations and deformations during evolution of periodic patterns on compressed films bonded to compliant substrates. Three-dimensional finite element analysis is performed assuming that the first bifurcation has either the hexagonal or square (i.e., checkerboard) dimple mode. Step-by-step eigenvalue buckling analysis is performed to explore sequential bifurcations on the bifurcated paths. It is found that at the second bifurcation, a rectangular checkerboard or stripe mode occurs depending not only on the Young's modulus ratio of the film and substrate, but also on the magnitude of the imperfection prescribed by the first bifurcation mode. Different bifurcation modes give a family of herringbone deformation patterns with different dimensions, i.e., the evolutional process is multiple and robust. Further, superposition of the identical modes in symmetric directions elucidates the existence of distinctive patterns cognate with the herringbone pattern, including a variety of experimentally observed patterns.

This study aims to enhance the crack phase-field model for ductile fracture by introducing a novel degrading fracture toughness to reflect damage evolution based on the phenomenological justification for the failure mechanism in elastoplastic materials. The free energy consists of elastic, pseudo-plastic and crack components. The governing equations are derived as stationary conditions for the corresponding local and global optimization problems within the continuum thermodynamics framework. Then, we introduce a degrading fracture toughness to reflect the evolution of micro-defects and their coalescences that are caused by both plastic deformation and negative hydrostatic pressure. Equipped with this implement, the proposed crack phase-field model realizes the reduction of both stiffness and fracture toughness to simulate the failure phenomena of elastoplastic materials. Two numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the capability of the proposed model in reproducing typical ductile fracture behaviors.

This study investigates the effects of initial imperfection and mesh resolution on the wrinkling and creasing. Finite element analyses are conducted to simulate compression behaviors of an incompressible Neo-Hookean elastic plane with a V-shaped notch as initial imperfection, so that the occurrences and evolutions of wrinkle and crease are evaluated quantitatively. As a result, it is demonstrated that the origins of wrinkle and crease can be determined by the overall and local strains even for the introduction of a V-shaped notch. Further, we illustrate that the converged specific local strain with respect to the increase of mesh resolution almost coincides with the condition of the occurrence of wrinkle (i.e., εw = 0.456) when the depth of a V-shaped notch is sufficiently small. We also show that the sizes of wrinkle and crease do not converge due to strain localization around a V-shaped notch. In the investigation of pattern evolutions about initial imperfection, we illustrate that two kinds of pattern evolution can be comprehensively discussed by varying the depth of a V-shaped notch, so that the condition of the occurrence of crease can be organized by the sharpness of a V-shaped notch.

This paper presents a formulation for the Cam-clay model based on the finite deformation theory with the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient. We developed an implicit stress-update scheme using the return-mapping algorithm and derived the consistent tangent modulus analytically. We also demonstrated that the scheme had high accuracy and quadratic convergence. By conducting the finite element analysis, we obtained the following conclusions. 1) Even though the Cam-clay model has compressibility both elastically and plastically, volumetric locking occurs. That is because the model shows the nearly incompressible property in the vicinity of the critical state. 2) F-bar method is useful for avoidance of the volumetric locking.

The extended theory is implemented into a commercial finite element package using a user-defined material subroutine. The accuracy of the implementation is verified by analyzing Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of swollen elastomers undergoing large deformations. Further, the inflation of a spherical balloon made of swollen elastomers is computed as an example.
In the thermodynamically consistent formulation of the material behavior of thermosetting resins subjected to curing, a dual dissipation potential (DDP) for the cure state is originally derived in conjunction with that for viscoelasticity, and the free energy combined with these DDPs is applied to the incremental variational framework (IVF) to construct an algorithm to efficiently solve the equilibrium problem. By the introduction of the 'cure' multiplier as an internal variable to the cure's DDP, a flow rule for the degree of cure (DOC), which is equivalent to the stationary condition of the Legendre-Fenchel transformation, is defined as a constraint condition for the rate of change of the total energy in the IVF. The flow condition of the DOC for the prescribed flow rule that is analogous with that of viscoplasticity is transformed along the lines of Perzyna's viscoplastic over-stress theory and is therefore fully consistent with the vairational structure of mathematical theory for plasticity. As a result, the governing equation for the global equilibrium and the constitutive equations for local material behavior, which correspond to the stationary conditions of the rate of change of the total energy within the IVF, are also variationally consistent so that all the state variables can be implicitly solved in the numerical scheme. The verification analysis is carried out to confirm that the proposed method provides the same numerical result with that obtained by the conventional framework.

<p>A data-driven approach is developed for micro-macro coupled multiscale analysis of hyperelastic composite materials. The offline process in this approach is to make a database that stores the microscopic stress distributions in response to various patterns of macroscopic deformation gradients. This can be done by carrying out an adequate number of numerical material tests on a periodic microstructures, or equivalently, a unit cell and followed by the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) to extract the principal components of the data along with the corresponding basis vectors. In order to realize FE2-type two-scale analysis in the online process, we interpolate each of the coefficients with the radial basis functions as a function of a macroscopic deformation gradient and make the resulting continuous function gently varying by means of the L2-regularization followed by the cross-validation and Bayesian optimization techniques. Each of the functions thus obtained is referred to as "data-driven function" of the microscopic stress distribution and can be used to obtain the macroscopic stress by the averaging process in the homogenization method. A representative numerical example is presented to validate the proposed data-driven FE2 analyses in comparison with high-fidelity direct FE2.</p>

We propose a new method of multi-scale analysis for plate-like devices such as a flat plate cell of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), which is classified into a composite plate composed of in-plane periodic structures. To characterize the macroscopic nonlinear mechanical behavior of the in-plane periodic structure, the method of numerical plate testing is employed. Since the obtained relationships between macroscopic generalized strains and stress cannot be represented by an equivalent homogeneous plate with a single material, we introduce a surrogate model composed of homogeneous layers that is expected to exhibit the same macroscopic responses. After the material parameters of these layers are identified, the macroscopic analysis becomes possible by use of a laminated structure with continuum solid shell elements available in a general-purpose finite element program. Representative numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the capability of the proposed multi-scale analysis method.

<p>We propose a rheology-based viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model in which the deformation gradient is mutiplicatively decomposed into viscoelastic and viscoplastic components. The viscoelastic and viscoplastic rheology elements are connected in series, and the stress is determined only in the former element, which is modified by the back stress introduced in the latter one to represent the hardening due to orientation of molecular chains. The standard generalized Maxwell model is used to characterize the viscoelastic material behavior at small or moderate strain regime, while a proven finite strain viscoplastic model is employed to realize the transient creep deformations due to frictional resistance of molecular chains. After identifying the material parameters with reference to experimental data and verifying the fundamental performance of the proposed model in reproducing typical material behavior of resin, we carry out two kinds of numerical analyses for simple structures to demonstrate its applicability for practical use.</p>

<p>We propose a set of constitutive equations of earthenware material subjected to the firing process and appropriate ways of determining their function forms and relevant material parameters from a series of respective experiments. The firing process under a specific heat curves is generally divided into three different phases; "thermal dilatation phase", "sintering phase" and "thermal contraction phase". These non-mechanical deformations are assumed not to be coincident, and the mechanical ones are assumed to be represented by viscoplastic constitutive model. Then, the key issue must be how to determine sintering strains by calibrating the employed function form of the densification rate with the data obtained from the stairway thermal cycle (STC) tests. Also, the presentations of the dependencies of the elastic and creep properties on both temperature and density are of particular importance to accurately predict the overall deformation of earthware. All the relevant material parameters as well as coefficients of thermal expansion and contraction are identified with the data obtained from respective mechanical experiments conducted in testing equipments for thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA) under several levels of termperature. The method of differential evolution, which is one of the metaheuristic optimization techniques, is employed to identify the creep parameters, since the mechanical responses to several levels of loading during firing processes involve all the non-mechanical and mechanical deformation of specimens simultaneously. The calculation results with the proposed constitutive equations are compared with the original experimental data to demonstrate the applicability for practical use of their function forms determined by the proposed strategy.</p>

A method of numerical plate testing for composite plates with in-plane periodic heterogeneity is proposed. A thick plate model with transverse shear deformation is employed at macro-scale, while three-dimensional solids are assumed at micro-scale. The homogenization process to evaluate the macroscopic plate stiffnesses is called "numerical plate testing" (NPT) in this study, which is in fact a series of microscopic analysis on a unit cell. The specific functional forms of microscopic displacements are originally presented so that the relationship between the macroscopic resultant stresses/moments and strains/curvatures to be consistent with the microscopic equilibrated state. In order to perform NPT by using general-purpose FEM software, we introduce control nodes to facilitate the multiple-point constraints for in-plane periodicity. Numerical examples are presented to verify that the proposed method of NPT reproduces the plate stiffnesses in classical plate and laminate theories. We also perform a series of NMT (homogenization analysis), macroscopic and localization analyses for an in-plane heterogeneous composite plate to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method.

The numerical study is made to illustrate the applicability of the <i>method of decoupled multi-scale analysis</i> to the micro-macro evaluation of the mechanical behavior of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) that exhibit inelastic deformations and internal damage of the matrix material. During the course of this illustration, it is confirmed that the reliability of the decoupled method can be guaranteed if the macroscopic constitutive model is introduced so as to inherit the microscopic material behavior. To this end, with reference to the results of the numerical material testing on the periodic microstructures (unit cells) of CFRP, we propose an anisotropic elasto-plastic-creep-damage combined constitutive model to represent the macroscopic material behavior and demonstrate the characteristics of the inelastic deformations that resemble the material behavior assumed for plastics at micro-scale. With the identified macroscopic material parameters, the macroscopic structural analysis, which is followed by the localization analysis consistently, can be an actual proof of the utility value of the decoupled method in practice.

We study the linear viscoelastic properties of polyacrylamide hydrogels over a wide range of swelling and deswelling states. The experimental data of dynamic moduli demonstrate that deswollen hydrogels exhibit the linear viscoelastic behaviors while swollen hydrogels behave as a purely elastic material. To capture the linear viscoelastic nature of deswollen hydrogels, we advocate the time-swelling superposition principle inspired by the swelling-dependent linear viscoelasticity model. In this principle, the Williams-Landel-Ferry type equation and the scaling law prescribe the horizontal and vertical shift factors as a function of the volume swelling ratio, making it possible to organize the dynamic moduli in the deswelling state. The resulting master curves elucidate that the dynamic moduli have a positive power-law correlation with the angular frequency. In addition, two shift factors reveal that deswelling enhances both frequency sensitivity and elastic property in dynamic moduli. The scaling exponents of the elastic moduli in the deswelling state are, in particular, larger than those in the swelling state, regardless of the contents of monomer and cross-linker. The generalized Maxwell model equipped with identified material parameters quantifies the linear viscoelastic behaviors that depend on frequency and water content.

When subjected to a cyclic loading, rubber exhibits a hysteresis behavior due to internal damage, known as the Mullins effect. Rubber has a self-healing ability and can recover slowly over time. This damage recovery phenomenon of rubber can be accelerated by injecting heat from the outside. In this study, we developed a mathematical model that can describe such a series of phenomena. In addition, the numerical analysis illustrates that the seismic isolation function of a structure can be restored by recovering from the damage of rubber isolation bearings caused by earthquake damage.

In order to resolve the problem of deterioration of underground structures after construction due to swelling of rock mass we have developed a new multiscale multi-physics rock mechanics approach. We carried out laboratory swelling tests of montmorillonite and formulated a thermodynamics model for the swelling behavior. We also formulated a numerical analysis model based on the modified Cam-Clay model that can predict deteriorating strength and stiffness of rock mass along with a rigorous return-mapping algorism. Then we developed a multiscale multi-physics analysis model for swelling rock mass by Incorporating the thermodynamics swelling model into the Cam-Clay type model. A series of analyses of a tunnel within a swelling rock mass predicted displacement and stress distribution around the tunnel in good agreement with measured data. We conclude therefore the validity and effectiveness of this proposed multiscale multi-physics rock mechanics theoretical model.

Based on the co-rotational formulation to deal with large displacements and rotations of a solid, we propose a method of multi-stage failure simulation of brittle materials and structures involving dynamic frictional-contact behavior. In order to simulate dynamic behavior of the structure, we adopted mid-point algorithm along with energy-momentum method. Also, we employed the penalty method to represent the brittle fracture due to gluing/separation of the elements, and the augmented Lagrange method to consider the frictional contact effects. Verification tests were conducted for the formulation with a simple structure subjected to the large displacements and rotations. Also, some simple numerical examples were presented to demonstrate the capability of the proposed method to simulate the multi-stage failure process.
