    A vector beam is a type of topological beam in which the polarization direction of light rotates around a singularity on the wavefront. This paper proposes a method to generate a vector beam by tightly focusing a pump beam in the crystalline direction such that the second-order nonlinear optical effect is forbidden. The directional dependence of the effective nonlinearity in zincblende crystals, such as ZnTe, was analytically investigated. Two types of nonlinear polarization singularities were found in [111] and [100] directions. Their polarization topological charge ℓ was +1 and −1, respectively. To experimentally demonstrate the proposed method, a (111) cut ZnTe crystal was selected as the nonlinear crystal. The polarization state of the generated terahertz (THz) beams was measured with a custom-built THz spectroscopic polarization imaging system. Radially polarized distributions were observed within the entire generated spectral region. Such a broadband feature of the generated vector beam is likely due to the topological nature of the focused pump beam, where the wavevectors are winding once about the optical axis. This simple method for generating THz vector beams will accelerate its applications.

    Phase singularities are seen in optical vortex beams, which are located in a two-dimensional spatial plane. Phase singularities in optical spectra are not common, but exploiting the extreme phase behavior around the singularity point could improve conventional optical devices for molecular-/bio-sensing, large phase modulation, etc. Recently, spectral phase singularities have been reported in reflection-type metamaterials but have not yet been reported in transmission. In this work, we demonstrate a spectral phase singularity in a transmission-type double-layer metamaterial. We attribute the mechanism to two different types of resonances in the double-layer metamaterial, namely a hybrid resonance and an anti-parallel dipole resonance. By controlling the lattice size of the double-layer metamaterial, we can manipulate the coupling of the two types of resonances. At a critical-coupling point, the phase singularity occurs in a spectrum-lattice diagram. We developed film metamaterial devices to experimentally demonstrate the phase singularity. Our results could enable investigation of coupled resonator systems, and may have applications in tunable metamaterial device design and improved sensing techniques.

    モアレは2つの周期が重なり干渉するときにできる新たな周期です。これまで2次元周期モアレはある種のベクトル場として扱うことができトポロジカルチャージと呼ばれる渦構造が並んでいることがわかってきました。本研究提案では、モアレのもつトポロジカルな性質を、光を媒介させて物質系へ転写する方法を提案します。もし実現できれば物質系に新たな振動状態の励起や秩序状態の発現など新たな物性物理の開拓へとつながります。

    A moire pattern appears when two kinds of periodic structures with some deformations are interfering. The moire pattern of two-dimensional periodic structures can be treated as a kind of the vector field. We designed moire-type meta-surfaces which consist of two layers of 2D periodic metal structures with deformation and whose operation frequency range are in the THz frequency region. The deformation was systematically changed to investigate the feature of the vector field. Then, we developed the method to actively control the vector field. We revealed that the phase distribution of electromagnetic wave provided by the moire-type meta-surface had the universality independent on the operation of the deformation. In addition, by introducing the incident angle modulation method inspired from the moire pattern appearing due to the parallax, we succeeded to modulate the vector field felt by an electromagnetic wave.

    次世代無線通信規格(Beyond 5G/6G)に向けて、要素技術となるアンテナで捕集され導波路を伝搬するサブテラヘルツ帯電磁波の位相制御デバイスを開発する。設計指針はすでに申請者が理論的に予言してきたアンテナ-導波路結合構造における位相制御手法に基づく。デバイスの作製には、近年著しい発展を見せる金属3Dプリンタを用いる。デバイスの評価には、申請者が構築してきたテラヘルツ時間領域分光イメージング手法を基軸に用い、位相制御性を実証する。本デバイスの実証ができれば、同時に予言されている方向性結合技術や今後発展が見込まれる量子暗号操作技術への応用展開も十分期待される。

    By means of experiments, electromagnetic field simulation and theoretical analysis, novel electromagnetic responses in sub-wavelength artificial structures have been investigated, focusing on periodic metamaterials in optical regime. Microscopic mechanism of photo-induced voltage due to optical rectification in structured thin-metallic film was clarified further after experiments of various designs and conditions. Basic theory on topology optimization for metamaterials was established. Opitcal lighography based on microscopic electric field distribution near the metallic metamaterial surfaces were proposed. Giant magnetochiral effect in metamolecule consisting of ferite and copper coil was discovered experimentally in microwave region and analyzed theoretically.

    In this research program, we have developed "programmable metamaterial circuits" which can enable us to control the optical response arbitrary and actively in terahertz region. Simulation results were shown that a split-tube array structure on a Si substrate irradiated with a CW light source can modulate amplification and phase of THz wave near the resonance frequency. The behavior of modulation was observed in our experiments although the signal was smaller than the simulation.

    Photo-induced voltage is generated due to the second order optical nonlinearity in 40nm-thick semi-transparent Au film with regular array of holes or dielectrically modulated structures. Experiments on these artificial structures are performed and investigated from the view point of electromagnetic field phase in the structure. Furthermore topological insulators are considered theoretically and discussed because some analogy can be found from completely different our systems.

  2. 光励起キャリアによる可動メタマテリアルの生成とその駆動に向けた基礎研究

    本研究では半導体基板上に空間的に分布した励起光のパターンを照射し、テラヘルツ(THz)帯の可動なメタマテリアルを作製することを試みる。 半導体において、バンドギャップよりも高いエネルギーの光でキャリアを励起することによりTHz領域でプラズマ周波数が変調可能である。つまり、励起光を照射した部分のみ、キャリア密度を上げTHz光に対する金属へと変化させられる。このことは励起光の空間的なパターンによりTHz光に対する人工構造(光励起キャリアメタマテリアル)を作製できることを示唆している。本研究ではその基礎研究として光励起キャリアメタマテリアル生成し、THz領域の光応答を調べることを目的とする。そのための励起光の空間的なパターンの生成に安価なプロジェクターを導入し改良することが本研究のアイディアである。
