Abstract The mechanisms underlying the influence of the surface chemistry of inorganic materials on polymer structures and fracture behaviours near adhesive interfaces are not fully understood. This study demonstrates the first clear and direct evidence that molecular surface segregation and cross-linking of epoxy resin are driven by intermolecular forces at the inorganic surfaces alone, which can be linked directly to adhesive failure mechanisms. We prepare adhesive interfaces between epoxy resin and silicon substrates with varying surface chemistries (OH and H terminations) with a smoothness below 1 nm, which have different adhesive strengths by ~13 %. The epoxy resins within sub-nanometre distance from the surfaces with different chemistries exhibit distinct amine-to-epoxy ratios, cross-linked network structures, and adhesion energies. The OH- and H-terminated interfaces exhibit cohesive failure and interfacial delamination, respectively. The substrate surface chemistry impacts the cross-linked structures of the epoxy resins within several nanometres of the interfaces and the adsorption structures of molecules at the interfaces, which result in different fracture behaviours and adhesive strengths.

Abstract Semicrystalline polymers are extensively used in various forms, including fibres, films, and bottles. They exhibit remarkable properties, e.g., mechanical and thermal, that are governed by hierarchical structures comprising 10–20-nm-thick lamellar crystals. In 1957, Keller deduced that long polyethylene (PE) chains fold to form thin single lamellar crystals, with the molecular chains perpendicular to the flat faces of the crystals (the chain-folding model). Chains inclining to the perpendicular orientation in single crystals have since been reported, along with their effects on the physical properties of PE. For bulk specimens, the chain tilt angle (φ) has been investigated only for model samples with well-annealed internal structures. However, for briefly annealed specimens, the φ values of lamellae and their origins are controversial owing to the disordered lamellar morphology and orientation. Herein, we report the direct determination of molecular-chain orientations in the lamellar crystals of high-density PE using a state-of-the-art electron-diffraction-based imaging technique with nanometre-scale positional resolution and provide compelling evidence for the existence of lamellar crystals with different inner-chain orientations. Clarifying the nanoscale variation in lamellar crystals in PE can allow precise tuning of properties and expedite resource-saving material design.

Abstract We developed an in-situ shear test system suitable for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations, which enabled us to examine the shear deformation behaviours inside soft materials at nanoscale resolutions. This study was conducted on a nanoparticle-filled rubber to investigate its nanoscale deformation behaviour under a large shear strain. First, the shear deformation process of a large area in the specimen was accurately examined and proven to exhibit an almost perfect simple shear. At the nanoscale, voids grew along the maximum principal strain during shear deformation. In addition, the nanoscale regions with rubber and silica aggregates exhibited deformation behaviours similar to the global shear deformation of the specimen. Although the silica aggregates exhibited displacement along the shearing directions, rotational motions were also observed owing to the torque generated by the local shear stress. This in-situ shear deformation system for TEM enabled us to understand the nanoscale origins of the mechanical properties of soft materials, particularly polymer composites.

Abstract Rotaxanes consisting of a high‐molecular‐weight axle and wheel components (macro‐rotaxanes) have high structural freedom, and are attractive for soft‐material applications. However, their synthesis remains underexplored. Here, we investigated macro‐rotaxane formation by the topological trapping of multicyclic polydimethylsiloxanes (mc‐PDMSs) in silicone networks. mc‐PDMS with different numbers of cyclic units and ring sizes was synthesized by cyclopolymerization of a α,ω‐norbornenyl‐functionalized PDMS. Silicone networks were prepared in the presence of 10–60 wt % mc‐PDMS, and the trapping efficiency of mc‐PDMS was determined. In contrast to monocyclic PDMS, mc‐PDMSs with more cyclic units and larger ring sizes can be quantitatively trapped in the network as macro‐rotaxanes. The damping performance of a 60 wt % mc‐PDMS‐blended silicone network was evaluated, revealing a higher tan δ value than the bare PDMS network. Thus, macro‐rotaxanes are promising as non‐leaching additives for network polymers.

Abstract The mechanisms of electron irradiation damage to epoxy resin samples were evaluated using their electron diffraction patterns and electron energy-loss (EEL) spectra. Their electron diffraction patterns consisted of three indistinct halo rings. The halo ring, related to an intermolecular distance of ~6.4 Å, degraded rapidly with electron beam irradiation. Such molecular-scale collapse could have been caused by cross-linking between molecular chains. The degree of electron irradiation damage to the samples changed with the accelerating voltage. Tolerance dose limit of epoxy resin estimated from the intensity of the halo ring was found to be improved at higher accelerating voltage. Changes in low-loss EEL spectra indicated that the mass loss of epoxy resin was remarkable in the early stage of electron irradiation.

Abstract Polarized optical microscopy (POM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are widely used for imaging polymer spherulite structures. TEM provides nanometer resolution to image small spherulites of sub-micrometer in diameter, while POM is more suitable for observing large spherulites. However, high-resolution images with a large field of view are challenging to achieve due to the deformations of ultrathin sectioned samples used for TEM observations. In this study, we demonstrated that correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM) combining POM and TEM could effectively characterize the spherulite structures in a wide range from nanometer to several hundred micrometers that neither TEM nor POM alone could cover. Furthermore, the deformations of the TEM ultrathin sections were corrected by referencing to the POM images at the same position of the sample, and large-area TEM images without deformations were successfully produced. The spherulite structures of poly(ʟ-lactic acid) were successfully analyzed using CLEM and TEM in a wide range of spatial scales at the same field of view. The large-area TEM image (250 µm × 250 µm), consisting of 702 TEM images stitched together, was subjected to machine learning to extract the essential structural information of spherulites. Analysis using the convolutional neural network, a well-known algorithm You Only Look Once (YOLO), demonstrated that it was practical to accurately obtain the diameter distribution and the space-filling factor (relative crystallinity) of the spherulites. This study presents a new approach for acquiring high-resolution images with a large field of view and processing the images at a fast speed.

Abstract This paper reviews recent advances and perspectives of electron microscopy and its application to polymer hierarchical structures. Of the various kinds of hierarchical polymer structures, we placed particular emphasis on polymer nanocomposites and polymer crystals based mainly on our recent results. In those nanocomposites, the chemical bonding between the nanometer-size fillers and rubber matrix, a key contributor to the mechanical properties of the material, has been investigated by combining scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The position-dependent EELS spectrum with high spatial resolution of STEM successfully provided revealed the presence/absence of the chemical bonds across the interface. The mechanical properties and fracture mechanism of nanocomposites have been studied by combining structural observations made using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with simulations. They have been further investigated using in situ TEM with a newly designed stretching holder, in which morphological changes, including cavity formation, were visualized and analyzed in terms of local strain distribution. The fracture processes of nanocomposite have been observed at nanometer resolution. The fundamental reinforcement mechanisms have been elucidated from morphological studies of nanocomposites under tensile deformation and during the fracture process. Moreover, nano-diffraction imaging, a position-resolved electron diffraction imaging with STEM, has been applied to a polymer crystal to evaluate the orientation of lamellar crystals at nanometer resolution. All these recent successes with radiation-sensitive polymer materials stemmed from developments made in electron optics and super-sensitive cameras used for advanced electron microscopy.

In order to explain or predict the macroscopic mechanical properties of polymer composites with complex nanostructures, atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based nanomechanics is one of the most appropriate tools because the local mechanical properties can be obtained by it. However, automatic force curve analysis based on contact mechanics would mislead us to the wrong conclusion. The purpose of this study is to elucidate this point by applying AFM nanomechanics on a carbon black (CB)-reinforced isoprene rubber (IR). The CB aggregates underneath the rubber surface prevent us from quantitatively evaluating the ratio of CB and interfacial polymer region (IPR), which is an important parameter to determine the macroscopic mechanical properties. In order to overcome this problem, transmission electron microtomography was incorporated to investigate the 3D structure in the same field of view as AFM nanomechanics. As a result, it was found that there are buried structures that do not appear in the AFM topographic image. In addition, we were able to reveal the existence of a force curve with an inflection point, which is characteristic of such "false" IPRs. To put it another way, we evidenced the existence of true IPRs for the first time by combining these state-of-the-art techniques.

Abstract
In nanocomposites, the adhesion between nanofillers and the polymeric matrix is key to the mechanical properties. The strength and spatial distribution of the adhesive layer around the nanofillers are important, particularly the presence of chemical bonding between the nanofillers and matrix. In this work, we studied a styrene-butadiene rubber composite filled with silica nanoparticles to visualize the spatial distribution of the adhesive layer. A silane coupling agent (SCA) was added to the nanocomposite for strong adhesion. The reaction involving the SCA on the silica surface was investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy-loss spectroscopy. Si-L2,3 spectra of the silica-filled rubber nanocomposite without the SCA were the same around the nanofillers, whereas in the nanocomposite containing the SCA the spectra were position-dependent. The spectra were fitted with the intensity profiles of the Si-L2,3 spectra of silica and SCA by multiple linear least-squares fitting. The fitting coefficients of silica and SCA were used to map the spatial distribution of the chemical bonding between silica and rubber chains. Chemical bonding was observed around the silica nanoparticles but not in the SBR matrix region, providing direct evidence of the reinforcing mechanism in the silica-filled rubber nanocomposite.

We have studied the solvent resistance characteristics of non-cross-linked and cross-linked natural rubber composites reinforced by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). All the MWCNTs were individually dispersed within the rubber matrix where a three-dimensional cellulation structure was created when the added amount of MWCNTs exceeded 16 wt%. The non-cross-linked MWCNT-filled rubber composite was not soluble, but swelled in toluene. Upon detailed studies on the dried sample, it was found that a new phase was formed due to a strong bonding between the MWCNTs and the rubber matrix resulting in the cellulation structure. We found that a continuous three-dimensional structure at the interface between the MWCNTs and the natural rubber was extremely tough, and thus contributed to the improvement in the elastic modulus and thermal stability of natural rubber composites.

Block copolymers, consisting of multiple, chemically dissimilar sequences covalently linked together, exhibit highly periodic nano-scale structures. Classical block copolymer nanostructures include spheres of A (B) on a body-centered cubic lattice in a B (A) matrix, cylinders of A (B) on a hexagonal lattice in a B (A) matrix, and coalternating lamellae. Of considerable recent interest are several complex (bicontinuous) nanostructures-the perforated lamellar (PL), gyroid (G), and double-diamond (D) morphologies. Here we show direct three-dimensional (3D) visualization of the gyroid structure using an emerging 3D imaging technique, the transmission electron microtomography (TEMT). Some crystallographical analysis to determine the space group of the gyroid will be given. In addition, epitaxial relation during the order-order transition from the gyroid to cylinders was clearly demonstrated using the 3D structures obtained using TEMT.

We recently found that the acrylic rubber (ACM) /epoxy adhesive via reaction-induced spinodal decomposition showed high peel strength when it was cured with diaminodiphenylmethane. Transmission electron microscopy observation revealed : (1) epoxy-rich particles are densely deposited near the surface of polyimide film (adherend), (2) by peeling, the particles are highly deformed and then fragmented via cavitation, and (3) a lot of cavities of 10-30nm diameter are generated also in ACM-rich matrix. The damaged zone by cavitation is formed in deep (800nm depth from the interface). It implies that a huge peeling energy is consumed by the massive damage and it leads to the high peel strength. By contrast, in a week adhesive cured with 1-cyanoethyl-2-phenylimidazole, the damaged zone was very thin (ca.20nm).

Recently, three-dimensional (3D) direct observations and analysis of polymer morphologies draw considerable attention because they not only provide intuitive understanding of the morphologies but also offer novel structural parameters that can never be obtained by other technique. The most sophisticated transmission electron microtomography (TEMT) achieves spatial resolution of less than 1 nm in the 3D reconstructed images. In the present paper, applications of TMET to polymer nanostructures, that is microphase-separated structures of block copolymers (Gyroid-structures), were reported in order to demonstrate huge and promising capabilities of the new technique.

In a sol-gel system accompanied by spinodal decomposition, co-continuous macroporous silica has been obtained as a result of structure freeze by gelation and solvent phase desolvation. The obtained co-continuous macroporous silica has been a fascinating separation media, but the flow behavior in co-continuous structure is still poorly understood. In order to prove the relationship between liquid transport behavior and geometry in co-continuous structure, three dimensional observation of the obtained co-continuous macroporous silica has been done by laser scanning confocal microscopy and Hg porosimetry. The influence of silica phase viscoelaticity has been considered on the structural formation.

A microscopy that can offer three-dimensional (3D) images of nanometer-scale has been developed. The methodology, called transmission electron microtomography (TEMT), is a combination of the conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and computerized tomography (CT). A series of TEM images of an object taken at different tilting angles ranged from 60° to the other side of 60° with an increment of a couple of degrees is subjected to CT in order to reconstruct 3D images of the object.
TEMT was used to investigate a self-organized nano-scale structure of a block copolymer. Under the conventional TEM, the structure appeared to be too complicated to characterize, while a periodic double-network structure consisting of one of the block constituents was clearly observed by TEMT. A 3D image analysis, i.e. 3D thinning, was used to estimate geometry of the network structure, which revealed that the coordination number at junctions were mainly 3. Combining this experimental result with crystallographic analysis of the network structure undoubtedly demonstrated that it has Ia3d symmetry and hence is based on one of the periodic minimal surfaces, Gyroid. Moreover, it is worth noting that the structures so far unexplored due to the lack of dimensionality, e.g., defects and grain boundary in crystals, will be able to be studied only by TEMT.

Phase-separated siloxane gels with co-continuous porous structures in the length scale from nanometers to micrometers have been synthesized in confined spaces especially in short cylindrical pores within porous medium. Morphology of the phase-separated gels derived from both methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) inside the porous medium was significantly affected by preferential wetting by siloxane phase on the internal surface of the mold. When spinodal wavelength of the guest gel becomes larger than pore size of the porous medium, wetting transition has been observed in the systems with strong affinity between siloxane phase and the internal surface of the mold.

Siloxane gel with co-continuous structure derived from methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) and tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) were synthesized in 2- and O-dimensional confined spaces by inducing spinodal decomposition during sol-gel transition. The resultant macroporous gel morphology was 3-dimensionally examined by a laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). The depth profile of volume fraction of gel phase oscillated near both hydrophobic and hydrophilic glass surfaces due to the attractive interactions between phase-separating siloxane phase and surfaces and/or shrinkage during aging stage. In 0-D confined space, surprisingly fine but disordered TMOS-derived gel has formed in broadened composition rage while MTMS-derived gel did not.
