Abstract There remains much ambiguity regarding the structure of red phosphorus. We report the adsorption and photo-polymerisation of P4 molecules encapsulated in an indium(III)-based metal-organic framework to afford a double-helical chain composite comprising of [P8] units. The similarity between the Raman spectrum of bulk red phosphorus and of the metal-organic framework – (P8)n adduct suggests the presence of such helical chains in the structure of amorphous red phosphorus. This provides crystallographic evidence of the structural building blocks of the red phosphorus allotrope stabilized within the pores of a metal-organic host. The (P8)n inclusion compound is an air-stable semiconductor with a band gap of 2.3 eV, which is relevant for gas detection and photo-catalysis. We demonstrate that this phosphorus adduct demonstrates a 10-fold increase in conversion in the oxidation of methyl orange dye compared with the parent metal-organic framework material.

Chiral magnetic textures give rise to unconventional magnetotransport phenomena such as the topological Hall effect and nonreciprocal electronic transport. While the correspondence between topology or symmetry of chiral magnetic structures and such transport phenomena has been well established, a microscopic understanding based on the spin-dependent band structure in momentum space remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate how a chiral magnetic superstructure introduces an asymmetry in the electronic band structure and triggers a nonreciprocal electronic transport in a centrosymmetric helimagnet α-EuP 3 . The magnetic structure of α-EuP 3 is highly tunable by a magnetic field and closely coupled to its semimetallic electronic band structure, enabling a systematic study across chiral and achiral magnetic phases on the correspondence between nonreciprocal transport and electronic band asymmetry. Our findings reveal how a microscopic change in the magnetic configuration of charge carriers can lead to nonreciprocal electronic transport, paving the way for designing chiral magnets with desirable properties.

The behavior of low concentrations of methanol (0.5 and 1.0 wt% of water) as a promoter for hydrate formation in seawater or pure water metastable solutions of methane was investigated using the classical molecular dynamics method at moderate temperature and pressure. The influence of methanol on the dynamics of the re-arrangement of the hydrogen bond network in seawater and pure water solutions of methane was studied by calculating order parameters of the tetrahedral environment and intermolecular torsion angles for water molecules, as well as by calculating the number of hydrogen bonds, hydrate, and hydrate-like cavities. It was found that hydrate nucleation can be considered a collective process in which the rate of hydrate growth is faster in systems with low concentrations of methanol, and confident hydrate growth begins earlier in a metastable solution without sea salt with a small amount of methanol than in systems without methanol.

Abstract 2D phases of matter have become a new paradigm in condensed matter physics, bringing in an abundance of novel quantum phenomena with promising device applications. However, realizing such quantum phases has its own challenges, stimulating research into non‐traditional methods to create them. One such attempt is presented here, where the intrinsic crystal anisotropy in a “fractional” perovskite, EuxTaO3 (x = 1/3 − 1/2), leads to the formation of stacked layers of quasi‐2D electron gases, despite being a 3D bulk system. These carriers possess topologically non‐trivial spin textures, indirectly controlled by an external magnetic field via proximity effect, making it an ideal system for spintronics, for which several possible applications are proposed. An anomalous Hall effect with a non‐monotonic dependence on carrier density is shown to exist, signifying a shift in band topology with carrier doping. Furthermore, quantum oscillations in charge conductivity and oscillating thermoelectric properties are examined and proposed as routes to experimentally demonstrate the quasi‐2D behavior.

Two-dimensional superconductivity is primarily realized in atomically thin layers through extreme exfoliation, epitaxial growth, or interfacial gating. Apart from their technical challenges, these approaches lack sufficient control over the Fermiology of superconducting systems. Here, we offer a Fermiology-engineering approach, allowing us to desirably tune the coherence length of Cooper pairs and the dimensionality of superconducting states in arsenic phosphides As x P 1− x under hydrostatic pressure. We demonstrate how this turns these compounds into tunable two-dimensional superconductors with a dome-shaped phase diagram even in the bulk limit. This peculiar behavior is shown to result from an unconventional valley-dimensionality locking mechanism, driven by a delicate competition between three-dimensional hole-type and two-dimensional electron-type energy pockets spatially separated in momentum space. The resulting dimensionality crossover is further discussed to be systematically controllable by pressure and stoichiometry tuning. Our findings pave a unique way to realize and control superconducting phases with special pairing and dimensional orders.

Abstract A direct electrosynthesis of H2O2 from either O2 or H2O is an attractive strategy to replace the energy‐intensive industrial anthraquinone process. Two‐electron water oxidation reaction (2e‐WOR) offers several advantages over the oxygen reduction reaction such as better mass transfer due to the absence of gas‐phase reactants. However, 2e‐WOR is a more challenging and less studied process with only a handful of metal oxides exhibiting reasonable activity/selectivity properties. Herein, we employ density‐functional‐theory calculations to screen a variety of metal‐nitrogen‐graphene structures for 2e‐WOR. As a consequence of scaling between the adsorption energies of reaction intermediates, we determine a linear relation between selectivities for the first and second reaction steps of 2e‐WOR, viz. that if selectivity toward adsorbed OH is improved, then selectivity toward H2O2 at the subsequent step is decreased. We also find that selectivity and activity are linearly scaled in such a way that a higher activity (i. e., a lower overpotential) leads to a lower selectivity for the H2O2 formation step. Based on the obtained results several chemistries, e. g., containing NiNx−C moieties, are predicted to rival the best‐performing metal oxides such as ZnO and CaSnO3 in terms of combination of their activity/selectivity characteristics for 2e‐WOR.

Using molecular dynamics, the evolution of a metastable solution for “methane + water” was studied for concentrations of 3.36, 6.5, 9.45, 12.2, and 14.8 mol% methane at 270 K and 1 bar during 100 ns. We have found the intriguing behavior of the system containing over 10,000 water molecules: the formation of hydrate-like structures is observed at 6.5 and 9.45 mol% concentrations throughout the entire solution volume. This formation of “blobs” and the following amorphous hydrate were studied. The creation of a metastable methane solution through supersaturation is the key to triggering the collective process of hydrate formation under low pressure. Even the first stage (0–1 ns), before the first fluctuating cavities appear, is a collective process of H-bond network reorganization. The formation of fluctuation cavities appears before steady hydrate growth begins and is associated with a preceding uniform increase in the water molecule’s tetrahedrality. Later, the constantly presented hydrate cavities become the foundation for a few independent hydrate nucleation centers, this evolution is consistent with the labile cluster and local structure hypotheses. This new mechanism of hydrogen-bond network reorganization depends on the entropy of the cavity arrangement of the guest molecules in the hydrate lattice and leads to hydrate growth.

A study of the morphology and evolution of the microstructure during thermal decomposition of Y2(C2O4)3·10H2O was conducted, and the stages and factors having the greatest impact on particle size and specific surface area were identified. The effect of the yttrium oxalate hexahydrate phases on the course of decomposition was also investigated. The evolution of the morphology and microstructure of decomposition products was explained from the analysis of volume shrinkage at various stages of the reaction. The formation of oxycarbonate is accompanied by the largest shrinkage during the reaction. At this stage, there is a significant increase in the specific surface area to 60–90 m2/g. Conversely, the morphology and microstructure of the particles during the transformation of oxycarbonate into yttrium oxide change insignificantly. Yttrium oxide powders obtained from the monoclinic and triclinic hexahydrate phases have the same specific surface area, but different morphology and bulk density due to pseudomorph formation. The carbon formed during thermolysis was shown to affect the specific surface area of the decomposition product. Two methods for producing yttrium oxide with high specific surface area have been proposed, and nanocrystalline yttrium oxide with a specific surface area of 65 m2/g was obtained.

  1. エネルギー・環境問題を目指したガスハイドレート相図作成手法の確立

    More details Close

    More details Close
