In everbearing strawberry cultivars, understanding the effects of high temperature is crucial. Long-day everbearing cultivars are promoted for summer and autumn production whereas this is off-season for June-bearing varieties. This study investigated the effects of high temperature on the development and fruit quality of the everbearing cultivars Natsuakari and Dekoruju in a phytotron-simulating summer condition. Both cultivars showed a smaller number of flowering inflorescences at 30°C/25°C (day/night) compared to 20°C/15°C, indicating that flower bud development is sensitive to high temperatures. Fruit set rates were also negatively affected by the higher temperature. Fruit sugar composition of ‘Natsuakari’ fruits showed an increased sucrose concentration during the developmental stage from 75% colored fruit to 100% colored fruit. In the ripe fruit of ‘Natsuakari,’ the sugar content was measured higher due to greater amount of sucrose accumulation, whereas a remarkable decrease in the sucrose concentration was observed at 30°C/25°C temperature compared to 20°C/15°C. These results suggested that summer high temperatures negatively impacted flowering, fruit set, and sucrose content in everbearing cultivars, ultimately leading to reduced fruit production and quality. Additionally, the temperature effects varied between the two cultivars strawberry.

The effect of light quality on flowering in everbearing strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.), a long-day plant, was investigated under night illumination conditions. Two everbearing strawberry cultivars, ‘Natsuakari’ and ‘Suzuakane,’ were tested. Flowering was promoted under far-red light, but it was almost inhibited under red light at 30/25°C (day/night temperature) in a natural light type phytotron. In another treatment, plants were grown under night illumination in a glass house from September. In this case, flowering was reduced under red light conditions compared with under an incandescent lamp. In everbearing strawberry cultivation, flowering is markedly promoted and plants may die due to self-topping under high temperature and long-day conditions. However, the mortality rate due to self-topping was lower under red light in this study. These results reveal the flowering response of everbearing strawberry cultivars to red and far-red light under relatively high temperatures, and the possibility of using red light to maintain vegetative growth by regulating flowering.

Incandescent light bulbs are widely used in light culture to promote flowering in long-day cut flowers. However, alternative energy-efficient light sources need to be developed. This study evaluated the flowering-promoting effect of two bulb-type three-color LEDs on two Gypsophila paniculata cultivars. The LEDs are equipped with far red, red, and blue colors and can be attached to the socket of an incandescent light bulb. Regarding the number of days to flower budding, LEDs exerted a flowering-promoting effect equivalent to that of incandescent light bulbs. However, incandescent light bulbs were more effective compared with LEDs in terms of the number of days to flowering in one of the two cultivars and number of leaves at flowering in both cultivars. The LED use resulted in an equal or superior fresh weight, stem length, and number of inflorescence units as the cut flower quality than those achieved with incandescent light bulbs. Although there may be an influence of light quality other than the three colors on flowering, the potential of bulb-type three-color mixed LEDs with a marked energy-saving effect was shown for the promotion of flowering.

Four everbearing strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) cultivars, ‘Kaho’, ‘Ohishi-shikinari’, ‘Miyoshi’ and ‘Yamato-shikinari’, which were overwintered, were grown at day (6:00–18:00)/night (18:00–6:00) temperatures of 30/25°C under 12-, 13-, 14- and 15-h photoperiods for 16 weeks. ‘Yamato-shikinari’ was also grown under a 16-h photoperiod. Under such a high temperature condition, these cultivars were found to be qualitative long-day plants. Flower bud initiation was inhibited under 14-h or shorter photoperiod in ‘Kaho’, under 13-h or shorter in ‘Ohishi-shikinari’, under 12-h in ‘Miyoshi’ and 15-h or shorter in ‘Yamato-Shikinari’. Non-chilled ‘Kaho’ and ‘Ohishi-shikinari’ plants were also tested. The photoperiods under which their flower bud initiation was inhibited were the same as those of overwintered plants. The critical photoperiod for flower bud initiation in everbearing strawberry plants grown under high temperature varied among cultivars.
The effects of red light and far-red light on the main shoot elongation and flowering of long-day plant stock [Matthiola incana (L.) R. Br.] were compared. During the day, plants were covered with the films which convert light quality of sunlight into different red/far-red photon flux ratio, whereas at night the plants were irradiated with compact self-ballasted fluorescent lamps of red or far-red light. Plants exposed to high red/far-red photon flux ratio during the day and red light at night, flowered late and developed short internodes, whereas the opposite occurred on plants grown under low red/far-red photon flux film during the day and irradiated with far-red light at night, i.e., flowering was advanced and internodes were elongated. The same findings were obtained regardless of planting date. However, the contrast between the two lighting conditions was especially apparent between autumn-sown, winter-cultivated plants, and summer-sown, autumn-cultivated plants because temperatures are colder during the winter flowering period. In this experiment, spring-sown, summer-grown plants had shorter internodes and more leaves ; anthesis was advanced compared with plants sown at other times of the year. This finding will contribute to the efficient production of long-day flowering plant because advancing flowering by far-red light improves the utilization of the horticultural facilities by hastening crop turnover and reducing heating costs in winter.

Flowering control with light quality is now attracting attention as LEDs become more popularized and genetic researches make more advancement. In some model plants used in experiments, a mechanism of flowering in long-day plants promoted by far-red light has been revealed. In addition, a research concerning effects of light quality in the flowering control of cut flowers conducted in Tohoku district reveled that the long-day treatment with far-red light is effective in promoting flowering of Eustoma and stock.

In Japan, most strawberry cultivars grown for fruit production are June-bearing, single-cropping type strawberries. Unlike June-bearing strawberry cultivars, everbearing strawberry cultivars are suitable for summer cropping. However, fruits production decreases and fruits quality were poor under high temperature in summer. To improve the fruits production and fruits quality, everbearing strawberry plants were grown under high temperature and detailed factors which lower the production and quality were investigated. There is not a correlation between rate of fruit set and fruit quality. And good tasted fruits have high sucrose content even under high temperature.

In plant, it is rare that long-day variety and short-day variety exist in the same species and strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa Duch.) is one of such a plant. In strawberry cultivars, long-day cultivars can produce fruits through the year so this characteristic is called “everbearing". This characteristic is very important in agricultural production. Because strawberry is an octoploid plant, inheritance in strawberry is complex. Thus, we studied “everbearing" characteristic using F. vesca which is a diploid plant and model plant of Fragaria. Self- and cross-pollinated lines were bred and grown under long-day condition. Some of these lines exhibited everbearing characteristic.

The effects of light quality on the flowering of Gypsophila paniculata were investigated using light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Flowering and flower budding were observed under long-day conditions with far-red (FR), while no flowering was observed under short-day conditions. Promotion of flowering and flower budding was increased under FR supplemented with red R compared to FR alone. Although generally R inhibits flowering in long-day plants, a certain intensity of R may be necessary for effective promotion of flowering. In contrast, blue (B)supplementation of FR was not effective in inducing flowering and flower budding.
