PURPOSE: To compare the image quality and acquisition time of thoracic great vessels using a novel, 3D isotropic non-contrast-enhanced MR angiography that combines respiratory compensation, electrocardiogram-triggering, compressed sensing, and Dixon water-fat separation at 3T (CS-MRA) to a conventional MRA employing parallel imaging and spectral attenuated inversion recovery (cMRA). METHODS: This study included 20 healthy volunteers and 19 patients with thoracic vascular diseases. All scans were performed on a 3T MRI scanner using a T2-prepared 3D fast low angle shot (FLASH) sequence. Visual image quality of thoracic great vessels was assessed using a 4-point scale. Quantitative parameters including SNR, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), contrast ratio (CR), and coefficient of variation (CV) were evaluated. Aortic diameters were measured, and reproducibility was assessed using Bland-Altman analysis and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Image acquisition times were also compared. RESULTS: Visual assessment demonstrated significantly higher scores with CS-MRA compared to cMRA across all evaluated thoracic vessels in both volunteers and patients (median score: 3 vs. 2, P < 0.05). Quantitative analysis showed that CS-MRA yielded significantly higher SNR, CNR, and CR (P < 0.05 for all), along with better signal homogeneity (lower CV). CS-MRA showed excellent intra- and inter-observer agreement for aortic diameter measurements, with ICCs ≥ 0.91 in volunteers and ≥ 0.95 in patients. CS-MRA also achieved significantly shorter acquisition times (volunteers: 5.3 ± 1.4 min vs. 6.0 ± 1.7 min, P < 0.01; patients: 5.1 [4.6-6.3] min vs. 6.9 [5.0-9.6] min, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: CS-MRA provides superior image quality, comparable measurement reproducibility, and significantly reduced acquisition times compared to cMRA. These findings support the clinical utility of CS-MRA as an efficient and reliable non-contrast technique for thoracic vascular evaluation.

PURPOSE: For diffusion MRI (dMRI) parameter estimation, machine-learning approaches have shown promising results so far including the synthetic Q-space learning (synQSL) based on regressor training with only synthetic data. In this study, we aimed at the development of a new method named synthetic X-Q space learning (synXQSL) to improve robustness and investigated the basic characteristics. METHODS: For training data, local parameter patterns of 3 × 3 voxels were synthesized by a linear combination of six bases, in which parameters are estimated at the center voxel. We prepared three types of local patterns by choosing the number of bases: flat, linear and quadratic. Then, at each location of 3 × 3 voxels, signal values of the diffusion-weighted image were computed by the signal model equation for diffusional kurtosis imaging and Rician noise simulation. The multi-layer perceptron was used for parameter estimation and was trained for each parameter with various noise levels. The level is controlled by a noise ratio defined as a fraction of the standard deviation in the Rician noise distribution normalized by the average b = 0 signal values. Experiments for visual and quantitative validation were performed with synthetic data, a digital phantom and clinical breast datasets in comparison with the previous methods. RESULTS: By using synthetic datasets, synXQSL outperformed synQSL in the parameter estimation of noisy data sets. Through the digital phantom experiments, the combination of synXQSL bases yields different results and a quadratic pattern could be the reasonable choice. The clinical data experiments indicate that synXQSL suppresses noises in estimated parameter maps and consequently brings higher contrast. CONCLUSION: The basic characteristics of synXQSL were investigated by using various types of datasets. The results indicate that synXQSL with the appropriate choice of bases in training data synthesis has the potential to improve dMRI parameters in noisy datasets.

Our purpose in this study was to elucidate the relation between the one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) noise power spectra (NPSs) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We measured the 1D NPSs using the slit method and the radial frequency method. In the slit method, numerical slits 1 pixel wide and L pixels long were placed on a noise image (128 × 128 pixels) and scanned in the MR image domain. We obtained the 1D NPS using the slit method (1D NPS_Slit) and the 2D NPS of the noise region scanned by the slit (2D NPS_Slit). We also obtained 1D NPS using the radial frequency method (1D NPS_Radial) by averaging the NPS values on the circumference of a circle centered at the origin of the original 2D NPS. The properties of the 1D NPS_Slits varied with L and the scanning direction in PROPELLER MRI. The 2D NPS_Slit shapes matched that of the original 2D NPS, but were compressed by L/128. The central line profiles of the 2D NPS_Slits and the 1D NPS_Slits matched exactly. Therefore, the 1D NPS_Slits reflected not only the NPS values on the central axis of the original 2D NPS, but also the NPS values around the central axis. Moreover, the measurement precisions of the 1D NPS_Slits were lower than those of the 1D NPS_Radial. Consequently, it is necessary to select the approach applied for 1D NPS measurements according to the data acquisition method and the purpose of the noise evaluation.

As an acceleration technique for use with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), compressed sensing MRI (CSMRI) was introduced recently to obtain MR images from under sampled k-space data. Images generated using a nonlinear iterative procedure based on sophisticated theory in informatics using data sparsity have complicated characteristics. Therefore, the factors affecting image quality (IQ) in CS-MRI must be elucidated. This article specifically describes the examination of the IQ of clinically important MR angiography (MRA). For MRA, the depictability of thin blood vessels is extremely important, but quantitative evaluation of thin blood vessel depictability is difficult. Therefore, we conducted numerical experiments using a simple numerical phantom model mimicking the cerebral arteries so that the experimental conditions, including the thin vessel positions, can be given. Results show that vessel depictability changed depending on the noise intensity when the wavelet transform was used as the sparsifying transform. Decreased vessel depictability might present difficulties at the clinical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) level. Therefore, selecting data acquisition and reconstruction conditions carefully in terms of the SNR is crucially important for CS-MRI study.

The noise power spectrum (NPS), an index for noise evaluation, represents the frequency characteristics of image noise. We measured the NPS in PROPELLER (Periodically Rotated Overlapping ParallEL Lines with Enhanced Reconstruction) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, a nonuniform data sampling technique, as an initial study for practical MR image evaluation using the NPS. The 2-dimensional (2D) NPS reflected the k-space sampling density and showed agreement with the shape of the k-space trajectory as expected theoretically. Additionally, the 2D NPS allowed visualization of a part of the image reconstruction process, such as filtering and motion correction.
