Abstract In photonic quantum applications, optical routers are required to handle single photons with low loss, high speed, and preservation of their quantum states. Single-photon routing with maintained polarization states is particularly important for utilizing them as qubits. Here, we demonstrate a polarization-maintaining electro-optic router compatible with single photons. Our custom electro-optic modulator is embedded in a configuration of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer, where each optical component achieves polarization-maintaining operation. We observe the performance of the router with 2%–4% loss, 20 dB switching extinction ratio, 2.9 ns rise time, and >99% polarization process fidelity to an ideal identity operation.

Experimental test of the error-disturbance uncertainty relations in quantum measurement is described. Using generalized, strength-variable measurement of a single photon polarization state, we demonstrate that the Heisenberg relation is violated, yet the Ozawa and Branciard relations are valid.

© 2018 SPIE. As optical quantum information processing protocols and experiments become increasingly more complex, integrated optics provide a small and robust alternative to traditional bulk optics. Specifically, waveguide technology allows for the creation of bright single-photon sources based on the fact that photon pairs can be created at any location along the waveguide. For our goals, we are working on the characterization of a highly nondegenerate Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion (SPDC) waveguide source on a periodically poled KTP (PPKTP) crystal. Our current waveguide source uses type-II phase-matching to create collinear signal and idler photons at 1550 nm and 810 nm, respectively, with the promise of generating simultaneous time-bin and polarization entanglement in future iterations. Our intended source application is for use in quantum key distribution and superdense teleportation protocols between a space platform and collection telescopes on Earth.

We report the experimental realization of the four-partite bound-entangled state, i.e., Smolin state [1] and demonstrate the superactivation of the bound entanglement. Bound entanglement is a class of multipartite entanglement that cannot be distilled into pure entanglement under local operations and classical communication (LOCC). Despite its undistillable property, this class of entanglement has interesting properties that are expected to be useful in quantum information processing (QIP). For instance, in the Smolin state, the bound entanglement can be activated into distillable entanglement when two of the parties get together. The process is called unlocking [1], and has been demonstrated experimentally [2]. More importantly, the bound entanglement can be activated with the help of entanglement in other systems [3]. The activation of bound entanglement, i.e., superactivation, plays an essential role in the QIP protocols using bound entangled states (e.g., remote information concentration [4]). © 2011 IEEE.

The scope of the study is to make efficient generation and manipulation of quantum state of light from inefficient processes and components, using repeated process, or time multiplexing. We demonstrated the highest single-photon generation via time-multiplexing technique. Also, we developed a highly pure heralded single-photon source and low-loss, long-life-time optical quantum memories. Our developed techniques and devices will largely improve the efficiency and precision in generation and manipulation of quantum states of light, and will be key components in large-scale single-photon based quantum computing and arbitrary photon number manipulation.
