In this paper, we construct new models for the Anderson duals $(I\Omega^G)^*$ to the stable tangential $G$-bordism theories and their differential extensions. The cohomology theory $(I\Omega^G)^*$ is conjectured by Freed and Hopkins [FH21 ] to classify deformation classes of possibly non-topological invertible quantum field theories (QFT's). Our model is made by abstractizing certain properties of invertible QFT's, thus supporting their conjecture.

Abstract We discuss a topological reason why global symmetries are not conserved in quantum gravity, at least when the symmetry comes from compactification of a higher form symmetry. The mechanism is purely topological and does not require any explicit breaking term in the UV Lagrangian. Local current conservation does not imply global charge conservation in a sum over geometries in the path integral. We explicitly consider the shift symmetry of an axion-like field which originates from the compactification of a p-form gauge field. Our topological construction is motivated by the brane/black-brane correspondence, brane instantons, and an idea that virtual black branes of a simple kind may be realized by surgery on spacetime manifolds.

  15. Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem from axial anomaly

We give a very simple derivation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) index theorem and its small generalization by using the path integral of massless Dirac fermions. It is based on the Fujikawa's argument for the relation between the axial anomaly and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, and only a minor modification of that argument is sufficient to show the APS index theorem. The key ingredient is the identification of the APS boundary condition and its generalization as physical state vectors in the Hilbert space of the massless fermion theory. The APS $\eta$-invariant appears as the axial charge of the physical states.

Abstract We describe how Goldstone bosons of spontaneous symmetry breaking G → H can reproduce anomalies of UV theories under the symmetry group G at the nonpertur- bative level. This is done by giving a general definition of Wess-Zumino-Witten terms in terms of the invertible field theories in d + 1 dimensions which describe the anomalies of d-dimensional UV theories. The hidden local symmetry $$ \hat{H} $$ , which is used to describe Goldstone bosons in coset construction G/H , plays an important role. Our definition also naturally leads to generalized θ-angles of the hidden local gauge group $$ \hat{H} $$. We illustrate this point by SO(Nc) (or Spin(Nc)) QCD-like theories in four dimensions.

  17. Witten effect, anomaly inflow, and charge teleportation

We study a phenomenon that electric charges are "teleported" between two spatially separated objects without exchanging charged particles at all. For example, this phenomenon happens between a magnetic monopole and an axion string in four dimensions, two vortices in three dimensions, and two M5-branes in M-theory in which M2-charges are teleported. This is realized by anomaly inflow into these objects in the presence of cubic Chern-Simons terms. In particular, the Witten effect on magnetic monopoles can be understood as a general consequence of anomaly inflow, which implies that some anomalous quantum mechanics must live on them. Charge violation occurs in the anomalous theories living on these objects, but it happens in such a way that the total charge is conserved between the two spatially separated objects. We derive a formula for the amount of the charge which is teleported between the two objects in terms of the linking number of their world volumes in spacetime.

Supersymmetry is a very important symmetry of modern high energy physics, and plays a central role in both phenomenology and string theory. The most important consequence of this symmetry is that quantum corrections in quantum field theory tend to cancel. However, this property of supersymmetry causes an apparent contradiction, which is known as the anomaly puzzle. In this article I would like to discuss this anomaly puzzle.
