    More details Close

Abstract To adsorb and separate platinum-group metals efficiently from simulated high-level liquid waste, two adsorbents, N,N,N′,N′-tetra-n-hexyl-3,6-dithiaoctane-1,8-diamide (THDTODA)/SiO2-P and (THDTODA + dodecanol)/SiO2-P, were prepared by impregnation of THDTODA with or without dodecanol into macroporous silica/styrene–divinylbenzene copolymer composite particles SiO2-P. The effect of the addition of dodecanol to THDTODA fixed silica-based adsorbents on the separation of platinum-group metals and other metals was evaluated by batch adsorption and chromatographic separation experiments. THDTODA/SiO2-P adsorbed Ru(III) and Rh(III) more than (THDTODA + dodecanol)/SiO2-P did in concentrated HNO3 solution. From the calculated thermodynamic parameters, dodecanol was considered to have little effect on the temperature dependence of the adsorptions of Ru(III), Zr(IV), Mo(VI), and Re(VII) onto the THDTODA adsorbents. Furthermore, in the results of column chromatography experiments, the effects of dodecanol addition on the separation properties were observed for Ru(III), Zr(IV), and Mo(VI), but little effect was observed for Pd(II) and Re(VII).

The redox behavior of chromium was investigated under three conditions for the nitric acid solutions considering the operating conditions of the reprocessing plant -atmospheric-pressure boiling, reduced-pressure boiling, and atmospheric-pressure non-boiling-to determine the relationship between the corrosion of austenitic stainless steel (R-SUS304ULC) and this behavior. The oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) in 8 M boiling nitric acid was increased over that in non-boiling nitric acid, even at the same temperature by measuring the time dependence of the chromium concentration and thermodynamic calculations. These results show that Cr(III) is more likely to oxidize under boiling than non-boiling conditions. On the other hand, the apparent rate of Cr(VI) reduction, as consumed by corrosion of the stainless steel, was more than 10 times greater than the rate of Cr(III) oxidation in 8 M nitric acid solution. This is evidence that the rate of Cr(VI) reduction by corrosion is kinetically faster than the rate of Cr(III) oxidation. In addition, the apparent rate of Cr(VI) reduction and the corrosion rate of R-SUS304ULC were positively correlated. Therefore, these indicate that the corrosion of R-SUS304ULC apparently follows Arrhenius' law in 8 M nitric acid solution containing Cr(VI), regardless of the boiling or non-boiling conditions.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident caused radioactive pollution by 131I, 134Cs and 137Cs. The surface of the ground was contaminated at a volume of 3 × 107 m3. The government has mandated that the top 5 cm of the contaminated soil be removed and stored, in this way, it is desirable to reduce its volume. Soil samples were collected from a mountain, a rice field and a vegetable field in northern Japan, and the silt was extracted from the muddy water by washing the soil. Next, the silt was sprayed with a solution of cesium carbonate (Cs2CO3). We determined the amounts of Al, Si, K and Cs in the silt particles using micro-particle-induced X-ray emission (micro-PIXE) analysis. The silt particles from a vegetable field, a rice field and a mountain were mainly formed from smectite or vermiculite, which absorbs Cs atoms. The measurements at multiple detection angles confirmed that Cs atoms were uniformly absorbed within silt particles less than [Formula: see text] in diameter. This resulted that the radioactive Cs atoms were adsorbed in silt particles within [Formula: see text] of the surface.

Tc extraction and separation experiments were performed basing on PUREX technique with using spent UO2 fuel with burn-up of 44 GWd t-1. The experimental results were examined with performing calculations by a simulation code ESSCAR (Extraction System Simulation Code for Advanced Reprocessing). It was demonstrated that Tc can be extracted almost quantitatively from a dissolver solution and that extracted Tc also can be recovered almost quantitatively by scrubbing. Further, it is clearly presented with the calculation results of ESSCAR that Tc extraction mechanism is dominated by the synergistic effect of Zr and U.

Electrolytic reduction of Tc (VII) in a nitric acid solution was examined to recover Tc as well as rare metals (Pd, Ru, and Rh) by an electrolytic extraction method, i. e. electro-reductive deposition, from a spent fuel solution for future nuclear fuel reprocessing. An absorption peak at 482 nm observed after electrolytic reduction of Tc (VII) in 3 M HNO3 at -0.3 and -1.0V vs SSE (standard silver electrode) suggests the reduction of Tc (VII) to Tc (IV). When Pd is present together with Tc in 1 M HNO3, the concentration of Tc decreased to 85% of the initial concentration by electrolysis at ±0.0 V vs. SSE for 60 min, suggesting acceleration of Tc deposition by Pd (promoter effect). The Tc concentration, however, increased returning to the initial value after further electrolysis. The Pd deposit from Tc-Pd-Ru-Rh solution redissolved more easily than that from Pd-Ru-Rh, as a consequence of a change in the oxidation-reduction property of the Pd deposit due to the presence of Tc in the solution.

Ruthenium, one of the useful elements contained in high-level liquid waste (HLLW), was expected to be converted into resource by separation and recovery. On the other hand, ruthenium complexes were important materials as dye for dye-sensitized solar cell. In this study, a new separation and recovery process of ruthenium from HLLW constructed by using novel sulfur-containing diamide and hydroxyl oxime extractant-impregnated macroporous silica-based adsorbents. In addition, an available dye for dye-sensitized solar cell was synthesized from the recovered ruthenium. These results indicated the possibility of effective reuse of HLLW for energy generation.

Development of X-ray detectors using a compound semiconductor, thallium bromide (TlBr), was performed for realizing high-sensitive flat-panel detectors. High-pure TlBr was obtained by the horizontal zone purification method. Small pixel electrodes were formed successfully on TlBr single crystals. Thin-film detectors were fabricated from TlBr thin films deposited on ITO glass substrates by the vacuum evaporation method. The fabricated thin films exhibited high resistivity at room temperature.

    Srに高選択性のDtBuCH18C6(di-t-butylcyclohexano-18-crown-6)化合物抽出剤をスチレン・ジビニルベンゼンポリマーを被覆した多孔性シリカ担体粒子(SiO_2-P)に含浸担持してDtBuCH18C6/SiO_2-P吸着材を創製した。
