    Abstract This study aimed to accurately measure the density (ρ), normal spectral emissivity (ε), heat capacity at constant pressure (C p ), and thermal conductivity (κ) of the Ti–6 mass % Al–4 mass % V (Ti64) melt by electromagnetic levitation with a static magnetic field and laser modulation calorimetry. A static magnetic field was applied to the levitated Ti64 melt to suppress the surface oscillation and translational motion of the droplets, and to suppress the convection flow inside the droplet for each property measurement, as needed. The measurement uncertainty was analyzed for all of the thermophysical property data. The excess volume and excess heat capacity of the Ti64 melt obtained in this study were compared with those evaluated using the ideal solution model. The contribution of the thermal vibrations of the atoms in κ for the Ti64 melt was evaluated from the difference between the measured thermal conductivity (κ) value and the κ values calculated using the Wiedemann–Franz law.

    Abstract The temperature dependence of density, normal spectral emissivity, heat capacity at constant pressure, and thermal conductivity of the V melt were measured with high accuracy using electromagnetic levitation in a static magnetic field. Surface vibration, translational motion, and convection of the electromagnetically levitated droplet sample were suppressed by the magnetic field. In the measurement of thermal conductivity, convection in the V-melt was sufficiently suppressed by the application of a field of 7 T or higher. In this study, the measured emissivity and thermal conductivity are compared with those evaluated using the free-electron models (Drude model and Wiedemann–Franz rule). Correlations between the density of states and thermal diffusivity at the Fermi energy of transition metals in the liquid state are investigated and the applicability of Mott's s–d scattering model is discussed.

    Abstract This study is part of a series of studies aimed at measuring the thermophysical properties of molten phase change material-type metallic thermal energy storage materials near 873 K (600°C). The target material is Al–Si based alloys. First, as a feasibility study, density measurements of the molten state of three Al–Si binary alloys (Al–12.2Si, Al–50Si and Al–90Si in atomic%) were performed. A highly accurate non-contact density measurement method based on the static magnetic field superposition electromagnetic levitation (EML) method was employed as the density measurement method. The validity of this experimental method was confirmed, and density of molten Al–Si base alloys (ADC12 and Al–5.9mass%Si–1.6mass%Fe) were measured as a function of temperature with an expanded uncertainty of 1.2%. In addition, the surface tension of the alloys was measured by the droplet oscillation method using the EML technique. The surface tension was successfully obtained as a function of temperature with expanded uncertainty of 2.3%.

    We propose a new AlN crystal growth method using Fe-based fluxes. AlN single crystals with a thickness of 67–212 µm were epitaxially grown on an AlN bulk substrate by a solution growth method using type 430 ferritic stainless steel flux. The full width at half maximum values of the x-ray rocking curves of (0002) and (10–12) of the synthesized AlN were 137 and 83 arcsec, respectively. The impurity concentrations of carbon were significantly decreased from 3 × 1019 atoms/cm3 in seed crystal to 6 × 1017 atoms/cm3 in synthesized crystal. The features of the method developed in this study are described as follows: (1) steel-based alloys are used as a flux, which are readily available and low-cost; (2) the growth temperature is 1700 °C, which is much lower than that of the sublimation method; (3) no high-pressure vessel is required because growth can be performed under 1 atmospheric pressure conditions; and (4) waste gas detoxification equipment is not required because only N2 gas is used and no toxic or flammable gases are used. Because of the above features (1) through (4), this is an effective crystal growth process from the perspective of ensuring the economics and safety of the facility.

    The applicability of the dual-wavelength reflectance-ratio (DWR) method to emissivity-free radiation thermometry of electromagnetically levitated high-temperature liquid metals was investigated. To establish the measurement technique, the DWR method was applied to liquid Ni levitated in a static magnetic field, which suppresses the surface oscillation and the translational motion. In a previous study, temperature of the levitated liquid metals measured by DWR showed deviations of about 95 K to 175 K from the temperature measured by a calibrated pyrometer. Since this discrepancy could be attributed to the imperfect contribution of the auxiliary light, the effect of the optical setup of the auxiliary light on the temperature measurement was investigated in this study. By using a reflecting collimator for the auxiliary optical system and adopting the radiance ratio determined considering the geometrical arrangement of the measurement system, the difference between temperature of liquid Ni kept near its melting temperature (𝑇𝑚 = 1728 K) measured using DWR and the temperature measured by a pyrometer calibrated using the melting point of Ni was 12 K on average and the standard deviation in the temperature measurement was 25 K (𝑛 = 5).

    The normal spectral emissivity at 807 and 940 nm and heat capacity at constant pressure of Pd–Fe melts were measured under electromagnetic levitation with a static magnetic field. The samples were made of Fe of mass purity 99.9985%. The present emissivity of Fe melts was relatively low compared with previously reported data using Fe with purity lower than 99.95% mass purity. The spectral emission of the Fe melts was analyzed using their normal spectral emissivity obtained from the Drude model. The excess heat capacity of Pd–Fe melts was evaluated from the measured heat capacity of Pd–Fe melts. Applying the Lupis–Elliot rule, we concluded from the obtained excess heat capacity that the enthalpy of mixing and excess entropy of the Pd–Fe melts should be negative. The composition dependence of the enthalpy of mixing, excess entropy, and excess Gibbs energy of Pd–Fe melts were evaluated using data obtained in this study and the literature.

    We have developed the system PROSPECT for measuring thermophysical properties at high temperature. Precise thermophysical measurements provide accurate excess functions, which represent non-ideality of solutions. We use excess functions to discuss solution models on the basis of electronic structure and thermodynamics. Pd-Fe systems show positive excess volume VE with negative excess Gibbs energy GE. The phase diagrams of these systems have common features with those of other Pd-X and Pt-X systems (where X is Fe, Ni, Co, or Cu), which means they all have order-disorder transitions. The correlation between VE and GE is discussed in terms of the electronic structure of the alloys, and an energy diagram is proposed to understand this correlation. The excess heat capacity CpE of Fe-Ni melts is positive over a whole composition range and a wide temperature range. We estimate the temperature dependences of the excess enthalpy HE and excess entropy SE of Fe-Ni melts from CpE. The Lupis-Elliott rule is satisfied for HE and SE with positive CpE.

    AlN is a promising substrate materials for AlGaN-based ultraviolet light emitting diodes, because of its high thermal conductivity, high ultraviolet transmittance and small lattice mismatch with AlGaN layers. Heteroepitaxial growth techniques of AlN layer on sapphire substrates should be improved to satisfy the increasing demand for large-size sapphire substrates. Recently, we have developed a new liquid phase epitaxial growth technique to grow AlN films on the nitrided sapphire using Ga-Al fluxes. Influential factors such as flux composition, growth temperature and crystal orientation of sapphire were studied. Details of the experimental results of the Ga-Al flux technique and its thermodynamic principle are introduced in this article.

    A method of accurately measuring the densities of high-temperature liquids levitated by electromagnetic levitation (EML) technique within the static magnetic fields is proposed. The method is based on the electromagnetic effect on the moving electrical conductivity materials. The liquid metal sample levitated by EML technique is oscillating by the electromagnetic force, and also is moving in the coils. For the liquid samples, if we apply a static magnetic field, the Lorentz force by the interaction between the electrical conductive sample and the static magnetic fields reduces the surface oscillation and translational motion of samples. For the effect, we can precisely obtain the correct volume of levitated liquid samples like a solid body. For applying the technique, we can measure the density of high-temperature liquid silicon in the range 1100 to 2000K. Using the technique we succeeded to reduce an order of magnitude compared with previously reported data. From the precise measurement of liquid silicon density, we found that the density has the maximum value in undercooled regions expected from the first principle molecular dynamics (FPMD) simulations. We also performed the structural analysis of liquid silicon by x-ray diffraction combined with the EML technique. Based on these results, we discuss about the temperature dependence of liquid silicon density from the view point of the structure of liquid silicon based on the tetrahedral coordination in the short range order. From these discussions, we show the importance of density measurement of high-temperature liquids for crystal growth simulations and understanding of the liquid structure and properties.

    Structural study on the BBO (BaB_2O_4) melts including the undercooled state and the glassy state have been performed by using the high-energy x-ray diffraction method combined with the conical nozzle gas-flow levitation technique (CNL). In this study, the CNL apparatus for the high temperature liquid sample was optimized for the x-ray diffraction experiments. The obtained structure factors, S(Q)&#039;s, of the BBO show no significant changes for the temperature dependence in the liquid state even for the undercooled state. On the other hand, the S(Q) of the BBO glass was slightly different as for the position of the first peak with the liquid states.
