Although a widely used and important industrial chemical, carbon disulfide (CS2) also poses a number of hazards due to its volatility and toxicity. As such, the development of multifunctional materials for the selective capture and easy recognition of CS2 is one of the crucial issues. Herein, we demonstrate completely selective CS2 adsorption among trials involving H2O, alcohols, volatile organic compounds (including thiol derivatives), N2, H2, O2, CH4, CO, NO, and CO2. We also showcase its fine detection using remarkable luminescent response in an Au(I)‐based metal−organic framework (MOF) of {ZnII(pz)[AuI(CN)2]2} (pz = pyrazine; 1) with a two‐fold interpenetration network. Ex situ single crystal X‐ray diffraction for 1 and CS2 accommodated 1 suggested that the Au···Au atoms are not only luminescent centers but also act as interaction sites for CS2 modulating the Au···Au contacts. These experiments revealed the specificity of CS2 and how changes in the CS2‐induced structure. Based on the obtained structural formation, 1 exhibited a sensitive detecting ability for CS2 with an ultrafast response time of less than 10 s. Ex situ time‐resolved photoluminescence analyses developed in this work implied that CS2 varied the energetic relaxation at the excited states related to the luminescent efficiency of the resultant MOF system.

N,N'-dihydroxy-1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide (NDI-(OH)2) has attracted much attention in recent years, because its doubly deprotonated state, (O-NDI-O)2-, has metal-coordination ability and characteristic electronic transition useful for designing electronic and optical functions. In contrast, a molecular crystal with the mono-deprotonated (HO-NDI-O)- ion remains unknown. We herein report an organic crystal containing non-disproportionated  (HO-NDI-O)- ions, which are connected by very strong O-H-O hydrogen bonds. Its lowest energy absorption band (450 to 650 nm) is observed in between that of NDI-(OH)2 (380 nm) and isolated (O-NDI-O)2- (500 to 850 nm) species, consistent with the molecular orbital calculations. This absorption originates from the electronic transition from deprotonated imide-based orbitals to NDI-core orbitals, which can be influenced by the hydrogen bonds around imide group. Consequently, the optical properties of NDI-(OH)2 can be modulated by the stepwise deprotonation and hydrogen-bonding interactions.

<title>Abstract</title>The creation of low-dimensional heterostructures for intelligent devices is a challenging research topic; however, macro- and atomic-scale connections in one-dimensional (1D) electronic systems have not been achieved yet. Herein, we synthesize a heterostructure comprising a 1D Mott insulator [Ni(chxn)2Br]Br2 (1; chxn = 1R-2R-diaminocyclohexane) and a 1D Peierls or charge-density-wave insulator [Pd(chxn)2Br]Br2 (2) using stepwise electrochemical growth. It can be considered as the first example of electrochemical liquid-phase epitaxy applied to molecular-based heterostructures with a macroscopic scale. Moreover, atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy images reveal a modulation of the electronic state in the heterojunction region with a length of five metal atoms (~ 2.5 nm), that is a direct evidence for the atomic-scale connection of 1 and 2. This is the first time that the heterojunction in the 1D chains has been shown and examined experimentally at macro- and atomic-scale. This study thus serves as proof of concept for heterojunctions in 1D electronic systems.

Theoretical calculations are typically utilized for examining intermetallic interactions. However, to validate theory, experimental confirmation of the existence of these interactions is necessary. We synthesized new heterometallic Ln–Pt complexes, NEt4{[Pt(PhSAc)4]Ln[(PhSAc)4Pt]}·2DMF (Ln: lanthanoid = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3), PhSAc = benzothioacetate, NEt4 = tetraethylammonium), in which both diamagnetic Pt(II) ions interact with the central Ln(III) ion. Typically, these interactions are not detected, because the distance between Ln and Pt atoms (~3.6 Å) is much larger than the covalent radius (~3.3 Å) and ionic radius (~3.10 Å). Pt-LIII resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) analysis was conducted to experimentally confirm the unique influence of the hidden Ln–Pt interaction on the luminescence of the Tb–Pt molecule, where the interaction induced emission properties in the Tb and Pt ions, with high quantum yield (59%). Quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis was also used to confirm the experimental results. RIXS analysis allowed the identification of several distinctive characteristics of the coordination environment, including the existence of heterometallic interactions, that affected the observed luminescence.

Lanthanide (Ln) compounds are common research targets in the field of magnetism and optics. Their properties arise from the electron localized in the f-orbital. Moreover, the effect of the covalency between lanthanide and ligands on magnetism attracted significant attention. We provided insight into the Gd–Pt bond (of the heterometallic Ln-Pt complexes: {[Pt(PhSAc)4]Ln[(PhSAc)4Pt]} NEt4·2DMF (Ln = Y(0), La(1), Gd(2); PhSAc = thiobenzoate, NEt4 = tetraethylammonium)); single-crystal polarized X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) reveal the electronic states around metal ion, where spectra of Gd-LIII edges show the Gd–Pt direction has the highest covalency (less ionic) around Gd ion in 2. In addition, calculating natural bonding (NBO) analysis, natural population analysis (NPA), LOL, and atoms in molecules (AIM), ab initio calculations reveal the role of metallic and organic ligands in the electronic and magnetic properties of Ln complexes. The slow magnetization relaxation of the Gd complex, which has not been reported previously in the Pt–Gd–Pt system, was observed up to 45K, the highest temperature reported to date among isolated Gd-complexes.

<title>Abstract</title> Lithium-ion-encapsulated fullerenes (Li+@C60) are 3D superatoms with rich oxidative states. However, no current studies have reported Li+@C60 as ligands. Here, we report a conductive and magnetically frustrated metal–fullerene-bonded framework {[Cu4(Li+@C60)(L)(py)4](NTf2)(hexane)n (1) prepared from redox-active dinuclear metal complex Cu2(L)(py)4 and lithium-ion-encapsulated fullerene salt (Li+@C60)(NTf2), where ligand L denotes 1,2,4,5-tetrakis(methanesulfonamido)benzene, py pyridine, and NTf2 the bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonamide anion. Electron donor Cu2(L)(py)2 bonds to acceptor Li+@C60 via eight Cu‒C bonds. Cu–C bond formation stems from spontaneous charge transfer (CT) between Cu2(L)(py)4 and (Li+@C60)(NTf2) by removing the two-terminal py molecules, yielding triplet ground state [Cu2(L)(py)2]+(Li+@C•‒ 60), evidenced by absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, magnetic properties, and quantum chemical calculations. Moreover, Li+@C•‒ 60 radicals (S = ½) and Cu2+ ions (S = ½) interact antiferromagnetically in triangular spin lattices in the absence of long-range magnetic ordering up to 1.8 K; thus, compound 1 is a potential candidate for an S = ½ quantum spin liquid.

The studies of crystal structures with hydrogen bonds have been actively pursued because of their moderate stabilization energy for constructing unique structures. In this study, we synthesized a molecular conductor based on 2,6-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,4,5,8-tetrathiafulvalene (trans-TTF-py2). Two pyridyl groups were introduced into the TTF skeleton toward the structural exploration in TTF-based molecular conductors involved by hydrogen bonds. In the obtained molecular conductor, (trans-TTF-py2)1.5(PF6)·EtOH, short contacts between the pyridyl group and the hydrogen atom of the TTF skeleton were observed, indicating that hydrogen bonding interactions were introduced in the crystal structure. Spectroscopic measurements and conductivity measurement revealed semiconducting behavior derived from π-stacked trans-TTF-py2 radical in the crystal structure. Finally, these results are discussed with the quantified hydrogen bonding stabilization energy, and the band calculation of the crystal obtained from density functional theory calculation.

Metal complexes have originally many kinds of bistability owing to charge, spin, lattice etc. Recently, there has been much effort for controlling the macroscopic properties by the molecular bistability through cooperative phenomena. In the one-dimensional systems, especially, dynamics can be expected owing to the bistability of molecules because cooperativity is not so strong comparing to three-dimensional systems. We have studied on the charge dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional halogen-bridged metal complexes by using charge bistability of metal ions. In this review, a method for creating the charge bistability by reducing band gap energy and new method for detecting such a charge bistability by using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been reported.

We synthesized quqsi-one-dimensional metal complexes and gold halide perovskite complexes to realize the charge bistability. We have succeeded in synthesized bromo-bridged palladium complex with new in-plane ligand 2,3-diaminobutane-1,4-diol(dabdOH). This compound has the shortest Pd-Pd distance (5.18A) and largest electrical conductivity.

We have synthesized novel organic cage molecule with using tetraphenylmethane or triptycene. We synthesized porous organic polymer by linking each cage molecule. We masured 13C NMR and confirmed the linking. However, we found that diyne has reacted. In addition, surface area determined by N2 sorption at 77 K indicated that this compound possesses poor porosity. This indicates that the porous framework has collapsed, which is probably related with reaction of diyne part. Thus, we next synthesized alkyl linked framework. We will make characterization and measurements in near future.

We have succeeded in synthesizing the novel Pd-Br chain compound with averaged valence state which is stable up to 400 K. We measured physical properties of this compound. This compound showed extremely high electrical conductivity (40 Scm-1at room temperature), which is 10^6 higher than previous Pd-Br compound. The averaged valence state was stable up to 443 K(decomposition temperature). Such a stable averaged valence state has not been shown in the previous Pd-Br chains. This is because hydrogen bond between hydroxy group of the dabdOH ligand and Br- ion made 1D chains far away each other, and resultantly compression of 1D chain direction occured. We also measured thermoelectoric property of a series of MX chain compounds. We measured [Ni1-xCox(chxn)2Br]Br2. The pure [Ni(chxn)2Br]Br2 showed negative Seebeck efficient, whereas the absolute value of that decreased with increasing Co ratio.

Our research purpose is to create charge dynamics based on the charge bistability in quasi-one-dimensional halogen bridged metal complexes. In this study, we have succeeded in synthesizing the novel bromo-bridged palladium complex [Pd(cptn)2Br]Br2 (cptn=1R-2R-diaminocyclopentane). We have shown to show that this complex shows phase separation phenomena over wide temperature range. We also succeeded in visualize local electronic state by using scanning tunneling microscope. In addition, we synthesized new bromo-bridged palladium complex with new counterion. This complex showed phase transition between mexed-valence to averaged-valence state around room temperature. This is important when we use this complex as a photo switching optical materials.

Our purposes of this project are to create the new physical properties and functionalities in superparamagnets by switched with the external stimulus. One strategy that we have employed is to prepare conducting SMMs, like [Pc_2Tb]Cl_0.6, which has a blocking temperature of 47K and whose magnetic properties showed hysteresis below 10K. This SMM shows negative magnetoresistance below 8 K. In our second strategy, we have incorporated planar memory into a double-decker Tb(III) SMM (Pc_2Tb). In addition, we have observed a Kondo Effect at 4.8 K by using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) for the first time. We can control the appearance and disappearance of the Kondo peak by injecting an electron using an STS. This is considered to be the first single-molecule memory device. In our third strategy, we have prepared field effect transistor (FET) devices of SMMs. The Pc2Dy device shows ambipolar (n- and p-type) behavior, whereas the Pc2Tb device shows p-type behavior. This difference is explained by the energy levels of the lanthanide ions. In the fourth strategy, we have doped Cs atoms onto Pc_2Y. Although Pc_2Y molecules show Kondo peaks due to the unpaired spin in the Pc ligand, when doped, Kondo peaks are not observed due to coupling of the radical Pc and the 6s electrons of the Cs atom. Finally, by doping with and manipulating the Cs atoms, we could write the letters T and U, which are the initials of Tohoku University.

Quasi-one-dimensional metal complex has been attracting much attention because they show physical properties. All of the Ni compounds and Pd and Pt compounds form MH and CDW states, respectively, without exception. In the our former research, we have succeeded in realizing Pd (III) MH state. In this study, we measured ^<15>N-NMR spectra and succeeded in observing that CDW amplitude gradually decreased with decreasing temperaure for the first time. In addition, we tried to realize Pt (III) MH state by introducing long alkyl chains into iodo-bridged Pt compounds. As a result, we have clarified that Pt-Pt distance is gradually decreased with longing alkyl chain length.

Quasi-one-dimensional halogen-bridged Pd compounds take a Pd(II)-Pd(IV) mixed-valence state or charge-density-wave state or Peierls Insulator due to the electron-phonon interaction. In order to realize a Pd(III) Mott-Insulator we used the sulphonic acid counter anions with long alkyl chains. In the raw of the five alkyl chain, the Pd compound shows the phase transition from the Pd(II)-Pd(IV) Peierls Insulator into the Pd(III) Mott-Insulator about 200K with hysteresis, which is the inverse Peierls transition. This phenomena were evidenced by ESR, X-ray single-crystal analyses, single-crystal reflection spectra, electrical conductivities, etc. In the case of the ten and twelve alkyl chains, the Pd(III) Mott-insulators are the ground state even in mom temperature, which is the first example. These interesting phenomena are well explained by the fastener effect or chemical pressure of the long alkyl chains. In the Pd(III) Mott-Insulator at 15 K the photo-irradiation with the energy of the charge transfer band (0.5eV) produced the Pd(II)-Pd(IV) Peierls Insulator state, while the photo-irradiation with L5 eV produced the metallic state. Such photo-induced phase transitions occurred in femto-seconds, which are available for the ultra-fast optical communication.
