Abstract Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are sites where thermal energy from Earth’s interior is emitted into the ocean, and sulfide- or sulfate-rich chimneys form by mixing of hydrothermal fluids and ambient cold seawater. Sulfide minerals are semiconductors and can convert thermal to electrical energy. However, regardless of the high-temperature difference (up to 400 °C) between vent fluids and seawater, the significance of thermoelectric power generation by chimneys is poorly understood. We measured the electrical conductivity and thermoelectromotive force (TEMF) of typical sulfide minerals and each part of zoned chimney walls from seafloor hydrothermal vents to evaluate their thermoelectric conversion. Young and porous chimneys consist mainly of fine-grained sulfate and Zn sulfide, with extremely low electrical conductivity, resulting in no thermoelectric conversion. In contrast, mature chimneys with inner walls rich in Cu, Fe, and Pb sulfides are n-type semiconductors with a high thermoelectric conversion performance. Given a temperature difference of 200–300 °C between the vent fluids and ambient seawater, the TEMF of the mature chimneys approaches 10–210 mV, which is comparable to the redox potential between vent fluids and seawater (~500 mV). This TEMF could play an essential role as a power source to overcome the overpotential required for the redox reactions at both sides of the chimney walls. Our findings suggest that seafloor chimneys are a unique self-organized thermoelectric conversion system that supplies substantial electrical energy to deep-sea ecosystems.

Abstract Natural and anthropogenic chelating ligands play important roles in promoting mineral dissolution during water-rock interactions. To address the remaining issue of how chelating ligands participate in the dissolution of minerals, this study investigated the dissolution characteristics of seven types of silicate minerals in the presence of a chelating ligand, N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)-L-glutamic acid (GLDA), which is a glutamic acid derivative, through batch dissolution experiments. The results showed that the dissolution of all types of silicate minerals, i.e., olivine (nesosilicate), epidote (sorosilicate), tourmaline (cyclosilicate), enstatite (single-chain inosilicate), hornblende (double-chain inosilicate), biotite (phyllosilicate), and anorthite (tectosilicate), can be enhanced by up to two orders of magnitude at both pH 4 and 8. The chelating ligand particularly facilitated the dissolution of minerals with a higher Al content, such as tourmaline and anorthite. Furthermore, the presence of chelating ligands enhanced the leaching of not only metals but also Si from minerals, resulting in a more congruent characteristic of mineral dissolution. A possible mechanism is that the chelating ligand adsorbs onto the negatively charged the mineral surface, which attracts more H+ and polarizes Si-O and Mg-O bonds, thereby dissolving the minerals at a faster rate. These results have significant implications for understanding the dissolution of minerals in nature and for the application of chelating agents in geological and materials engineering.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) modified by introducing non-six-membered ring defects, such as five- and seven-membered rings, have attracted considerable attention because their conductivity is enhanced by increasing the electronic density of states at the Fermi energy level. However, no preparation method exists to efficiently introduce non-six-membered ring defects into SWCNTs. Herein, we attempt to introduce non-six-membered ring defects into SWCNTs by defect rearrangement of the nanotube framework using a fluorination–defluorination process. Defect-introduced SWCNTs were fabricated from SWCNTs fluorinated at 25 °C for different reaction times. Their structures were evaluated, and their conductivities were measured by operating a temperature program. Structural analysis of the defect-induced SWCNTs using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and visible–near-infrared spectroscopy did not reveal the presence of non-six-membered ring defects in the SWCNTs but indicated the introduction of vacancy defects. Meanwhile, conductivity measurements performed by operating a temperature program showed that the defluorinated SWCNTs prepared from SWCNTs fluorinated for 3 min (deF-RT-3m) exhibited decreased conductivity owing to the adsorption of water molecules to non-six-membered ring defects, thereby implying the possibility of non-six-membered ring defects being introduced into deF-RT-3m.

In this paper, a spark plasma sintering (SPS) method was employed to solidify single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) only, and the effect of processing conditions on the mechanical properties of the SWCNT solids were examined using a small punch (SP) testing method. The sintering temperatures used was in the range of 600∼1400°C, and the sintering pressures used was 40 MPa and 120 MPa. It was demonstrated that the SPS method allowed SWCNTs to be solidified, without any additives. The experimental results showed that the purification of raw soot was critically importance. The SWCNT solids prepared from purified raw soot showed significant non-linear deformation response, producing quasi-ductile fracture behavior. In contrast, raw soot produced brittle solids. The Young's modulus, fracture strength and work of fracture increased with the increasing sintering temperature and pressure. The Raman and SEM analyses showed that the amount of the graphite-like materials were observed to increase with the increasing temperature and pressure, which indicate that the structure of the SWCNTs was changed partially into the graphite-like materials. The formation of graphite-like materials increased tendency of brittle fracture in the SWCNT solids. TEM observations revealed that the fracture surfaces of the SWCNT solids were characterized by pull out of SWCNT bundles. This observation suggests that it may be possible to improve the mechanical properties of SWCNT solids by increasing the cohesion between SWCNTs.

In this paper, a spark plasma sintering (SPS) method was employed to solidify single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) only, and the effect of sintering conditions on the mechenical properties of the SWCNT solids were examined using a small punch (SP) testing method. The sintering temperature used in the range of 600-1 400°C, and the sintering pressure used 40 MPa and 120 MPa. It was demonstrated that the SPS method allowed SWCNTs to be solidified, without any additives. The experimental results showed that the purification of raw soot was critically importance. The SWCNT solid prepared from purified raw soot showed significant non-linear deformation response, producing quasi-ductile fracture behavior. In contrast, unpurified raw soot produced brittle SWCNT solids. The Young's modulus, fracture strength and work of fracture increased with increasing sintering temperature and pressure. The Raman scattering and SEM observations showed that the amount of the graphite-like materials were observed to increase with the increasing temperature and pressure, which indicate that the structure of the SWCNTs was changed partially into the graphite-like materials. The formation of graphite-like materials increased tendency of brittle fracture in the SWCNT solids. TEM observations revealed that the fracture surfaces of SWCNT solids were characterized by pull out of SWCNT bundles. This observation suggests that it may be possible to improve the mechanical properties of SWCNT solids by increasing the cohesion between SWCNTs.

Stratified materials are defined as materials with nano-sized stratification that have been artificially controlled and designed. They are exemplified as a thin layer or stacked layers formed on surface of semiconductors. The present research is aiming at formation of controlled and designed stratification on surface of fine particles, leading to improvement of properties of fine particles which has been difficult to accomplish through the conventional particles engineering, and to development of novel properties created by the stratification.<BR>Here, we describe the method of the development of the nano-size CdS catalyst with stratified structure that efficiently separates electron and hole during photolysis, especially, to produce hydrogen gas from hydrogen sulfide, H2S. Furthermore, as an approach for the development of the practical use photocatalyst, ZnS-carbon nanotube complex was also made and examined. In a way, the stratified structure is considered to enable the production of a reaction system which simulates function in biological cells. Using this catalyst in the solution mixed with various materials such as, calcium hydroxide, seawater and H2S, we succeeded in producing about 7.5l/h m2 of hydrogen gas under the sunlight.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have single- or multi-cylindrical graphene structures that possess diameters of a few nanometers, while the length can be up to a few micrometers. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) possess a high tensile strength and ultra-light weight, and have excellent chemical and thermal stability. They also possess semiconducting and metallic conductive properties. These anomalous features have led to many proposed applications in the biomedical field, including biosensors, drug and vaccine delivery. However, CNTs could have unusual toxicological properties, in that they share intermediate morphological characteristics of both fibers and nanoparticles. This review presents the cytotoxicity and biocompatibility of CNTs. Finally, we report the activation of the human acute monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1 in vitro and the response in subcutaneous tissue in vivo to MWCNTs of different lengths.

To take advantage of the strength of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) in composites, it is necessary to have strong interactions between the layers of nanotubes to transfer the load to all layers of nanotubes, not only the outermost nanotubes are loaded. However, there is no method for evaluating interlayer strength at all. In this study, the shear vibration modes related between the layers of nanotubes were detected in the low-frequency region using Raman scattering spectroscopy. The deformation of nanotube structure caused the disappearance of the Raman shear vibration mode of MWCNT and the appearance of the Raman shear vibration mode of graphite, indicating the nanotube structure transforms into graphite.

In both planar carbon skeletons (graphite) and curved carbon skeletons (carbon nanotubes), a high concentration of pyridinic nitrogen species (Pyri-N) was successfully introduced into the carbon skeleton by the fluorination-defluorination method. It was also found that heat treatment in inert gas causes Pyri-N to decompose and undergo structural transition to graphitic nitrogen species (Grap-N), which is stable structure, and the ratio of Grap-N increases in the carbon framework. The electronic state of carbon materials is highly dependent on the curvature of carbon framework, revealing that the increase in the electron density by doping Grap-N around nanosized edges is essential to enhance oxygen reduction reaction catalytic activity.

We have demonstrated that composites of carbon nanohorns and bisphosphonate drugs could be phagocytosed into osteoclasts to significantly inhibit their bone resorptive function. In addition, carbon fiber and anticancer drug composites were observed to effectively reduce cancer cell number in both in vitro and in vivo studies. The carbon fiber also acted as osseous scaffolding and promoted bone tissue regeneration. Thus, when introducing carbon materials complexed to bioactive molecules into metastatic bone for interactions with osteoclasts, cancer cells, and osteoblasts, the metastatic bone environment can be controlled spatially as well as temporally by a series of responses, namely, bone destruction termination, cancer cell suppression, and bone repair promotion.

In this study, in order to provide the carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) for clinical application of the dentistry, we observe the biodegradability of carbon nanohorns (CNHs) and modify antibiotics (minocycline) and growth factors (bone morphogenetic proteins) to CNHs. The control of sustained release by LED irradiation of them and their effects were confirmed. Furthermore, we developed titanium with CNHs modified on the surface. We also observed in vivo kinetics of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) locally implanted in mice and suggested that CNTs remain at the site of implantation and do not accumulate in detectable quantities in other organs. These proof-of-concepts will promote future studies on the application of CNMs as smart Nano-Biomaterials which are multifunctionalized for the dentistry.

In this research and development, we report a newer approach of power and energy efficiency with the use of a simple structure employing the highly crystalline single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) produced by arc discharge method with high-temperature annealing. We successfully fabricated elements of a planar lighting device using a phosphor screen emitting visible light in a simple diode structure composed of the cathode containing the highly crystalline SWCNTs. The anode, on the other hand, was made with phosphor deliberately optimized by coverage of silicon oxides, and it will be assembled together with the cathode by the new stable assembling process resulting to stand-alone flat plane-emission panel. And the phosphors were attempted to control light emission convolution employing long time afterglow of phosphors. We succeeded in clarifying the efficacy and applicability underlying the electrical conductivity of SWCNT by controlling their crystallinity.

Nitrogen-doped vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Nx-VAMWCNTs) and defluorinated VAMWCNTs (deFx-VAMWCNTs) were prepared from fluorinated VAMWCNTs. N500-VAMWCNTs and deF500-VAMWCNTs were modified with doped nitrogen atoms and a small amount of fluorine groups without destroying the alignment structure of the nanotubes. The specific capacitance of the N500-VAMWCNT electrodes was 12.0 F/g at a scan rate of 100 mV/s, which is approximately 1.8 times the value obtained for the as-grown VAMWCNT electrodes. Based on the order of self-potential of each sample in three-electrode cell system, combined cells were assembled with the deF550- and N500-VAMWCNTs as positive and negative electrodes, respectively. As a result, the open circuit voltage of combined cells exhibited +0.16 V, and their cell voltage and energy density were larger than those of normal cells (N500-VAMWCNT electrodes) when each cell was provided with equivalent electric charges per unit mass of the electrode.

We investigated the properties of lithium ion capacitors (LICs) using highly crystalline single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) thin films with carboxyl groups as an anode. The decrease of the capacity of LICs was suppressed at a high rate, and also the decrease of the capacitance and the increase of the internal resistance were suppressed at overcharging voltages. If the capacitance of SWCNTs is large, we can fabricate a high performance LICs. In contrast, the properties of the LICs decrease at over-discharging voltages. In the future, we need to clarify phenomena caused in SWCNT electrodes in over-discharging. We synthesized ethylenediaminated SWCNTs (EDA-SWCNTs) from fluorinated SWCNTs and investigated the properties of electric double-layer supercapacitors (EDLSCs) with EDA-SWCNTs as electrodes. Free-standing EDA-SWCNT electrodes for EDLSCs are effective as electrodes and improve the properties of EDLSCs in comparison to binder-free COOH-SWCNT electrodes.

From the results of electrochemical analysis, it become clear that catalytic reaction between polysulfide ion and fullerenes and oxygen was progress at the water - organic solvents interface. As the results, polysulfide ion (by products of photo catalytic reactions) was successfully changed into elemental sulfur and/or fullerenes-sulfur compounds. Moreover, polysulfide ion can be changed into industrial materials, such as polysulfide rubber which has high resistance properties. Synthesized elemental sulfur can be changed into hydrogen sulfide, which is the origin of photo catalytic reaction. Thus, environmental friendly hydrogen generation system by using sulfur can be constructed.

In this study, we prepared high crystalline single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) thin film (transmittance 9.0 %)/bulk film (transmittance 2.3 %) interfacial structured film cells and investigated the photoelectromotive force. When a light (solar simulator AM1.5 with 100 mW/cm2) was irradiated toward the bulk film side (10×10 mm2) of the cells, the photoelectromotive force of 0.90 mV occurred. The Seebeck coefficient was estimated to be +66.4 μV/K, and the carrier of high crystalline SWCNT was a positive hole. Additionally, the interface of thin/bulk film was not Schottky junction but Ohmic since the I-V curve of the cells showed a liner shape. The photoelectromotive force in the SWCNT film/bulk interface cell is considered to be thermoelectromotive force derived from thermal gradient generated by photo-excitation electron converted into heat.

A high crystallinity single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) film/Ag cell was fabricated. When the SWCNT/Ag interface of the cell was irradiated with a visible light (650 nm), photovoltaic electromotive force of 0.16mV occurred. After checking the current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of the cell at the time of the light irradiation, the slope of the curve showed the constant linear nature, and the interface of SWCNT/Ag was found to be ohmic junction. As a result of having measured the electromotive force outbreak properties for the on/off of light irradiation, the electromotive force showed relaxation time. We found that the photovoltaic electromotive force was derived from thermoelectromotive force by light absorption having changed for heat.

HA was partially grown on the surface of amide-functionalized MWCNTs, and the three bending strength and young’s modulus of the HA/MWCNT composites were 120 MPa and 15 GPa, respectively. As the young's modulus of the resulting composites was lower than that of the free-standing HA compacts, MWCNT were found to give the composites flexibility and to work as reinforced filler.

This year, we concentrated our research on the following topics aiming the accomplishment of solar energy conversion system (SECS) 1.Development of highly efficient photocatalyst- This year, we succeeded in scaling up the photocatalyst synthesis process (developed last year) to obtain necessary quantity of CdS particles for efficient SECS. As a consequence, this year' s research was focused on the development of a photocatalytic cell that utilizes hydrogen sulfide (H_2S) dissolved in alkaline solution as raw material and separate the hydrogen evolved effectively. 2.Removal of by-products evolved during reaction- When H_2S is photosplit, besides hydrogen, sulfur clusters (SC), which hinders the reaction is also produced as a by-product. Thus, a physical separation process based on electron transfer characteristics was developed to recover SC without degrading the reactants in the system. In this process, fullerene (C_<60>), which stably disperses in highly alkaline conditions, was used as an electron donor. When fullerene was introduced into the yellow colored suspension dispersing SC, the suspension turned colorless instantaneously. Furthermore, sulfur (S) recovered by heat-treating sulfur-contained fullerene was used for the preparation of the raw material to produce H_2S. 3.Reproduction of hydrogen sulfide from recovered sulfur Though circulation of sulfur was attempted by treating the same with water under hydrothermal conditions until last year, reproduction of H_2S using sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) was attempted this year. As a result, we succeeded in the production of biogas containing 15 % of H_2S, which is equivalent to methane fermentation. 4.Enrichment of hydrogen sulfide Since the H_2S produced by treating sulfur with SRB is associated with large quantities of methane and carbon dioxide, solid and liquid absorbents based enrichment technology was developed to obtain nearly 100 % H_2S. Solar energy conversion system was accomplished by carrying out the above researches.

In this project, the synthesis of magnetic metal and alloy nanoparticles by using the chemical method called "polyol process" was investigated in detail. The reaction parameters such as type of polyol, synthesis temperature, metal ion concentration, reaction promoting agents, and nucleating agents were effectively utilized to control the reaction kinetics to obtain magnetic nanoparticles with required physical properties such as size and crystal structure. This paved the way for the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles with varying magnetic properties. For example in the cases of transition metal nanoparticles such as cobalt and nickel, the synthesis of particles with diameters ranging from few micron to few tens of nanometer and varying crystal structures was realized. For example, the bulk cobalt is known to have fcc phase at temperatures as high as 421.5℃. However, the cobalt metal particles synthesized using the modified polyol process were found to posses fcc structure at micron size levels. When the reaction kinetics was enhanced, the particle size was reduced to submicron and even to few tens of nanometer. Along with size reduction, the crystal structure also changed from fcc at micron size range, coexistence of fcc and hcp in the submicron size range and to s and hcp cobalt at nanometer size range. On the other hand, we also succeeded in the synthesis of non-magnetic hcp-Ni nanoparticle of few tens of nanometer in diameter. In the case of the synthesis of magnetic alloy nanoparticles for magnetic recording, we have successfully demonstrated the direct synthesis of L1_0 FePt nanoparticles at low temperature of 553 K using "modified polyol method" without subsequent annealing, whose diameter is 5-10 nm and the intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy field (H_k) is 31 kOe. This indicates that precise control of the reaction kinetics, especially low reduction rate through optimizing the polyol/Pt salt mole ratio and type of polyol are very important for directly synthesizing the L1_0 FePt nanoparticles. CoPt nanoparticles with high magnetocrystalline anisotropy and also particle sizes of 7 nm in diameter were prepared by using the modified polyol process. Furthermore, we also succeeded in selectively fixing FePt and CoPt nanoparticles on a silicon substrate by using APTS as the coupling layer, which prevents the grain growth even at higher annealing temperatures. Though the presence of the highly anisotropic phases was identified the potential of the particles were well below the anticipated values. Although the successful fabrication of recording media using magnetic particles for portable compact memory was not realized, considerable information and knowledge related to both the synthesis of nanoparticles and the fabrication of nanoparticle monolayer film was gathered. Thus, using this information as the base, we will work towards the development of high-density recording medium.

    More details Close

    More details Close
