    Abstract Preceding a core-collapse supernova (CCSN), various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande (SK) via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova (pre-SN) neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming CCSN can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and SK, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-SN neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and SK on pre-SN neutrino detection. A pre-SN alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the SK detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-SN neutrino signal from a 15 M star within 510 pc of the Earth at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. For a Betelgeuse-like model with optimistic parameters, it can provide early warnings up to 12 hr in advance.

    Abstract Development of radio-purification for the large-volume liquid scintillator detector is a key to enhance search sensitivities in neutrino physics. In this paper, we describe laboratory studies on the radio-purification of the liquid scintillator detector by using the metal scavenger, aiming at the improved search for the neutrinoless double beta decay in KamLAND-Zen. In the purification tests, the 210Pb reduction efficiency was evaluated. Based on the purification performance in small-scale system, we designed a large adsorption column for the metal scavenging applicable to the KamLAND purification system. We produced the column and constructed a purification test bench, and confirmed the 212Pb reduction efficiency, the process speed, the LS contamination and quality changes, and the stability of chemical components in the Xe-LS. We found that the metal scavenging is a practical method for the large-volume LS purification, and will be effective to reduce metallic radioactive elements.

    Abstract Whether there exist elementary particles having Majorana nature is a fundamental open question that has persisted since the 1930s. The only practical experiments to test the Majorana nature of neutrinos is the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay, which has been a major challenge for nuclear and particle physicists. In the 2000s, a number of experiments using advanced technologies were planned, some of which have already achieved significant improvements in the search sensitivity. In this article, the current status of the neutrinoless double-beta decay searches is summarized, reviewing the progress of KamLAND-Zen, which recorded the world’s best sensitivity in the effective Majorana neutrino mass limit.

    Abstract The decay of the primordial isotopes 238U, 235U, 232Th, and 40K has contributed to the terrestrial heat budget throughout the Earth's history. Hence, the individual abundance of those isotopes are key parameters in reconstructing contemporary Earth models. The geoneutrinos produced by the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium have been observed with the Kamioka Liquid‐Scintillator Antineutrino Detector (KamLAND). Those measurements have been improved with more than 18‐year observation time, and improvement in detector background levels mainly with an 8‐year nearly reactor‐free period, which now permit spectroscopy with geoneutrinos. Our results yield the first constraint on both uranium and thorium heat contributions. The KamLAND result is consistent with geochemical estimations based on elemental abundances of chondritic meteorites and mantle peridotites. The High‐Q model is disfavored at 99.76% C.L. and a fully radiogenic model is excluded at 5.2σ assuming a homogeneous heat producing element distribution in the mantle.

    Abstract We present the results of a search for core-collapse supernova neutrinos, using long-term KamLAND data from 2002 March 9 to 2020 April 25. We focus on the electron antineutrinos emitted from supernovae in the energy range of 1.8–111 MeV. Supernovae will make a neutrino event cluster with the duration of ∼10 s in the KamLAND data. We find no neutrino clusters and give the upper limit on the supernova rate to be 0.15 yr−1 with a 90% confidence level. The detectable range, which corresponds to a >95% detection probability, is 40–59 kpc and 65–81 kpc for core-collapse supernovae and failed core-collapse supernovae, respectively. This paper proposes to convert the supernova rate obtained by the neutrino observation to the Galactic star formation rate. Assuming a modified Salpeter-type initial mass function, the upper limit on the Galactic star formation rate is <(17.5–22.7) M yr−1 with a 90% confidence level.

    The reactor neutrino and gallium anomalies can be tested with a 3-4 PBq<br /> (75-100 kCi scale) 144Ce-144Pr antineutrino beta-source deployed at the center<br /> or next to a large low-background liquid scintillator detector. The<br /> antineutrino generator will be produced by the Russian reprocessing plant PA<br /> Mayak as early as 2014, transported to Japan, and deployed in the Kamioka<br /> Liquid Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector (KamLAND) as early as 2015.<br /> KamLAND&#039;s 13 m diameter target volume provides a suitable environment to<br /> measure the energy and position dependence of the detected neutrino flux. A<br /> characteristic oscillation pattern would be visible for a baseline of about 10<br /> m or less, providing a very clean signal of neutrino disappearance into a<br /> yet-unknown, sterile neutrino state. This will provide a comprehensive test of<br /> the electron dissaperance neutrino anomalies and could lead to the discovery of<br /> a 4th neutrino state for Delta_m^2 &gt; 0.1 eV^2 and sin^2(2theta) &gt; 0.05.

    We propose to test for short baseline neutrino oscillations, implied by the<br /> recent reevaluation of the reactor antineutrino flux and by anomalous results<br /> from the gallium solar neutrino detectors. The test will consist of producing a<br /> 75 kCi 144Ce - 144Pr antineutrino source to be deployed in the Kamioka Liquid<br /> Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector (KamLAND). KamLAND&#039;s 13m diameter target<br /> volume provides a suitable environment to measure energy and position<br /> dependence of the detected neutrino flux. A characteristic oscillation pattern<br /> would be visible for a baseline of about 10 m or less, providing a very clean<br /> signal of neutrino disappearance into a yet-unknown, &quot;sterile&quot; state. Such a<br /> measurement will be free of any reactor-related uncertainties. After 1.5 years<br /> of data taking the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly parameter space will be tested<br /> at &gt; 95% C.L.

    Solar neutrino observations utilizing tiny cross section of neutrinos have revealed the long-standing "solar neutrino problem." The problem was a breakthrough in measurement of neutrino properties and in new theories beyond the standard particle theory. It has contributed to an evolution of particle physics. The resolution of the problem has been obtained by solar neutrino experiments and the KamLAND reactor neutrino experiment. KamLAND has obtained a clear signature of oscillatory neutrino behavior and, as a result, it has determined a neutrino oscillation parameter related to neutrino mass very precisely. Now the accumulated knowledge on neutrino propagation opens new research area by using neutrinos as a prove of interior of the earth and the sun.

    A verification test to enhance the detector performance for the neutrino-less double beta-decay search, hunting for Majorana neutrinos, was performed by using a prototype detector. We realized a high-light-yield prototype detector by combining all improvements, such as new liquid scintillator, light-collecting mirror, and high efficiency light sensor. The present study shows that the expected improvements of the liquid scintillator detector performance are feasible, and increases the chance of observing the Majorana neutrino mass in the double beta-decay experiments.

    ニュートリノや暗黒物質が関わる希少事象探索は、宇宙・素粒子の未解決問題を解き明かす鍵となっていると考えられており、神岡地下で進行する極低放射能環境を活用した実験的研究の重要性が高まっている。新しい純化手法の候補として、有機合成分野において近年開発が進んでいるメタルスカベンジャー(金属捕捉材)による吸着法が挙げられる。 本研究では、これまで小規模装置で開発を行ってきたシリカゲルにアミノプロピル基を付けたメタルスカベンジャーによる放射性重金属の吸着純化技術をさらに発展させ、十分な純化速度が得られる液体シンチレータ純化装置の製作・稼働を行い、液体シンチレータ検出器における主要なバックグラウンド源に対する除去率を評価する。これまでの研究において、液体シンチレータの主成分であるリニアアルキルベンゼン(LAB)を130 L/h程度で純化する直径10 cmの直管型吸着カラムを製作した。感度波長において9 cm 光透過率は0.24%以内で安定しており、純化してもLABの高い光透過率が維持できることを示した。また、LABに発光剤を添加した液体シンチレータの発光量についても誤差2%の範囲内で有意な変化は見られず、発光性能への影響が十分に小さいことを確認した。放射性鉛除去についてはLABの流量を最適化しても、4回までの循環では目標の90%の除去率が達成できなかった。そこで、吸着カラムの吸着層の厚みを2 cmから4 cmに拡張することでメタルスカベンジャーの使用量を約2倍に増やし、カラムプロセスにおける鉛吸着効率の向上を試みた。その結果、3回の循環によって約90.4±0.4%の除去率を達成できることが分かった。本研究によって、メタルスカベンジャーによる吸着純化は液体シンチレータの成分を変化させずに放射性鉛を除去する実用的な方法であることが示された。

    キセノン含有液体シンチレータを用いてニュートリノを放出しない二重ベータ崩壊を探索するKamLAND-Zen実験では、検出器の極低放射線環境と拡張性において非常に優れた性能を発揮し、世界の実験を大きくリードしている。これまでの液体シンチレータ検出器は、光到達時間から再構成した位置情報のみを基にして発光点がどちらの層にあるかを区別してきたが、本研究ではこれに発光時定数の情報を加えた検出器を開発する。二重ベータ崩壊核が存在する内層に短時定数発光、外層に長時定数発光の液体シンチレータを導入し、発光時間波形の違いによって外層での発光の寄与の有無を判定する。これまでの研究で大型の検出器において使用実績のあるプソイドクメン(PC)とリニアアルキルベンゼン(LAB)をベースとした液体シンチレータを比較して、発光時定数に違いが現れることを確認している。シンチレーション光に対する吸収・再発光や散乱の効果を正確に評価するため、発光時間波形・波長情報と散乱角度を同時に測定する光学パラメータ測定装置を製作した。暗室内部で角度依存性を自動スキャンするため、遠隔制御のロータリーステージを用いている。LABベースの液体シンチレータを用いて、波長360 nmの吸収に対する再発光確率、及び長波長(> 400 nm)の散乱確率とその角度依存性を測定した。これらの結果を入力値とした光学シミュレーションを行うことで、正確な集光率及び発光時間波形の予測から発光点識別能を評価できるようになる。

    The development of a liquid scintillator detector to search for the Majorana neutrino mass was performed. We found that molecular sieve and activated charcoal are effective to remove light absorbing materials in the liquid scintillator, resulting in improved performance. The increase of the light output and transparency of the scintillator will enhance the detector performance. The present study enables us to reduce the cost of constructing a large detector and increases the chance of observing the Majorana neutrino mass with a liquid scintillator detector.

    世界をリードする地下素核研究に向けて実験の一層の高感度化を実現するためには、低放射能化技術の強化が必要である。本研究では、メタルスカベンジャーを用いた放射性重金属の吸着手法を開発するため、液体シンチレータ中の金属に対する除去率を評価した。原子核反応を起源とする放射性金属を液体シンチレータ中に溶かしこませるため、ラドンガスのバブリングによって放射性鉛を液中で内部生成させた。メタルスカベンジャーの候補を選定するため、5社12製品の試薬に対してバッチプロセスによる鉛の吸着除去試験を行った。除去率が高いものに対しては試薬を増量した吸着試験も行い、最大約95%の除去率が得られることを確認した。また、実機の純化では液体シンチレータを試薬入りのカラムに連続して送り込むカラムプロセスによる吸着が必要となるため、小規模な装置を構築しカラムプロセスでの吸着性能を評価した。その結果、最も高い吸着性能を示したシリカゲルにアミノプロピル基を付けたメタルスカベンジャーが候補として有力であることが分かった。また、カラムプロセスでは一定流量で処理し続けても除去率は維持されることを確認した。吸着材の使用量あたりの除去率が最大となるように吸着条件を決定すると、94%の除去率が得られた20 mmの吸着層の長さが最適な条件となる。このカラムプロセスを繰り返すと除去率は増大し、最大98%の除去率が得られる。純水と液体シンチレータを撹拌する液液抽出法での純化では最大80%程度の除去率であったことから、メタルスカベンジャーは極性の小さい有機金属に対しても吸着性能を示している可能性がある。また、一定流量で処理し続けても除去率は維持されることを確認した。さらに、液体シンチレータ中の発光材(PPO)の吸着による発光量の低下や不純物混入による光透過率の低下が起こらないことを確認した。

    We aim to achieve the discrimination of light output points to reduce backgrounds in a double-layer liquid scintillator detector, based on a light sensor sensitive to the wavelengths of the light source. Using a small prototype, we performed photon counting of the liquid scintillator with different wavelengths in scintillation using a combined system which consists of a wavelength shifting plate and a photomultiplier tube, and confirmed a discrimination ability as expected from a simulation. As a consequence, the study has reached the stage to start to discuss a detailed plan for a future large detector to discriminate light output points.

    Re-analysis of past reactor neutrino experiments is suggesting the existence of the 4th neutrinos. KamLAND experiment that has achieved important measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters has a potential to explore the 4th neutrinos. Technical design of implementing an anti-neutrino generator into the KamLAND has been developed in this study. It has been shown that it is feasible to perform an experiment to explore the 4th neutrinos with KamLAND.

    The development of devices highly sensitive to neutrino-less double-beta decays using isotopically enriched xenon was performed. The specially-shaped light-concentrating mirrors for the large volume liquid scintillator detector (KamLAND) were produced from aluminum metalizing PET film, and the increase of light collection efficiencies for scintillation light coming from distant points was confirmed. In addition, the purification by distillation and adsorption to enhance the optical performance of linear-alkylbenzene-based liquid scintillator was performed, resulting in better performance than the original liquid scintillator in use. The present study allows us to suggest a specific plan to test the inverted hierarchy neutrino masses by the neutrino-less double-beta decay experiment.

    The development of CdWO4 crystal scintillator sensitive to low-energy anti-neutrinos emitted by Potassium nucleus decays was performed to measure the radiogenic heat contribution in Earth's heat production, and its performance was evaluated. The prototype detector based on measured parameters was already designed, and built a realistic technic for a new anti-neutrino detection device. As a consequence, the study has reached the stage to start to discuss a plan for a future large detector to measure the Potassium anti-neutrino flux at about 20% uncertainty.

  14. 低エネルギー太陽ニュートリノ観測によるCNOサイクルの検証の研究

    KamLAND実験では、これまでの原子炉・地球反ニュートリノ観測に加え、さらに低エネルギーの太陽ニュートリノ観測を目指している。太陽内部の核融合反応では、ppチェーンとよばれる一連の反応と、炭素・窒素・酸素の原子核が触媒的に作用するCNOサイクルとよばれる一連の反応が関係する。本研究では、これまでに観測されていないCNOサイクルで作られるニュートリノを高精度で測定し、太陽モデルにおける重元素量の検証を目標とする。 CNO太陽ニュートリノの観測を行うためには、現在約40mBq/m^3の崩壊率で最大のバックグラウンド源となっている^<210>Pbを3桁以上削減する必要がある。液体シンチレータの純化には蒸留法を用いるが、小規模実験装置においてPbを約4桁の削減できることが確認されている。平成18年度は、前年度において建設された蒸留装置を用いてKamLAND検出器の液体シンチレータの純化を行った。しかし、一回の循環で^<210>Pbに対して約1/4程度の除去率しか得られていないことが分かった。予測よりも悪い除去率となった原因として、循環の途中で純化後と純化前の液体シンチレータが検出器内で混合してしまったことが挙げられる。しかし、混合が起きる前の除去率も2桁程度であったことから蒸留装置自体にも問題があると考えられる。そこで、^<210>Pbに対する除去性能を高めるために、蒸留装置自体の改造を計画した。この改造により、小規模実験装置と同様の蒸留のコントロールが可能となり、目標の削減レベルが得られることが期待できる。また、循環中の液体シンチレータの混合を防ぐための温度コントロールのための熱交換器を導入した。今後は、再純化を行い改造後の蒸留装置の性能評価を行うとともに、^<210>Pbの削減後に最大のバックグラウンドとなる宇宙線起源の^<11>Cの解析的な除去効率を確認する。

    KamLAND (Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector)実験では、液体シンチレータの大発光特性を生かし、平均距離、約180kmの原子炉や地球から飛来する反ニュートリノの観測を行なっている。昨年度までの原子炉ニュートリノの研究で、99.998%の信頼度でニュートリノの消失を確認すると同時に、ニュートリノ振動の重要な特徴となるスペクトルの歪みも99.78%の信頼度で確かめられた。KamLANDにおいて振動パラメータをさらに精密に測定するには、統計量の拡大と系統誤差の縮小が必要となる。統計量の拡大にはこれまでの半径5.5m球の有効体積(697m^3)を拡大し検出器外側のデータも解析に取り入れることが目標となる。 有効体積を拡大するにあたって、最も顕著なバックグラウンドは検出器外側と低エネルギー領域にある偶発イベントであるが、これらのイベントは検出閾値を高くすることで除かれる。また、ミューオン起源の高速中性子は検出器外側に集中する。エネルギーの高い領域では、高速中性子のバックグラウンドが支配的になるため、ミューオンの軌跡と中性子生成のプロセスを含めた詳細なシミュレーションが必要となる。 検出器に到達する高速中性子数を見積もる際に、最も不定性が大きいのはミューオンによる中性子の生成プロセスである。この不定性を抑えるために、検出器外側にある外部検出器を通過したミューオンを用いて、中性子生成量に対する校正を行なう。外部検出器との同時計測を用いて観測された中性子生成量とミューオンフラックスから予想される生成量との違いは1.5倍程度であった。また、ミューオンが外部検出器を通過しない場合でも、約半数はミューオンがおこす電磁シャワーによって外部検出器で観測できることが分かった。この結果、原子炉ニュートリノの観測エネルギー領域において高速中性子のバックグラウンドは全体積で0.002events/day程度となり、原子炉ニュートリノイベント数0.8events/dayに対して十分に小さくなることが確かめられた。 2002年3月9日から2004年10月31日までのデータ(749.1日)を用いて解析を行い、3.0MeV以上のエネルギー領域において有効体積をこれまでの半径5.5m球から半径6.0m球に拡大したところ、統計量は1.3倍となり振動パラメータに対する感度が向上した。その結果、>99%の信頼度で振動パラメータを質量2乗差Δm^2=7.9x10^<-5>eV^2付近のみに絞り込むことができた。
