Abstract We present a new mechanism to generate a coherently oscillating dark vector field from axion-SU(2) gauge field dynamics during inflation. The SU(2) gauge field acquires a nonzero background sourced by an axion during inflation, and it acquires a mass through spontaneous symmetry breaking after inflation. We find that the coherent oscillation of the dark vector field can account for dark matter in the mass range of 10-13 – 1 eV in a minimal setup. In a more involved scenario, the range can be wider down to the fuzzy dark matter region. One of the dark vector fields can be identified as the dark photon, in which case this mechanism evades the notorious constraints for isocurvature perturbation, statistical anisotropy, and the absence of ghosts that exist in the usual misalignment production scenarios. Phenomenological implications are discussed.

Abstract We study the stability of the electroweak vacuum during and after the Starobinky inflation, assuming the existence of the non-minimal Higgs coupling to the Ricci scalar. In the Starobinsky inflation, there exists R2 term (with R being the Ricci scalar), which modifies the evolution equation of the Higgs field. We consider the case that the non-minimal coupling is sizable so that the quantum fluctuation of the Higgs field is suppressed and that the Higgs amplitude is settled near the origin during the inflation. In such a case, the Higgs amplitude may be amplified in the preheating epoch after inflation because of the parametric resonance due to the non-minimal coupling. We perform a detailed analysis of the evolution of the Higgs field in the preheating epoch by a numerical lattice simulation and derive an upper bound on the non-minimal coupling constant ξ in order to realize the electroweak vacuum in the present universe. We find that the upper bound on ξ in the Starobinsky inflation model is more stringent than that in conventional inflation models without the R2 term.

The puzzles of (a) the small neutrino mass, (b) the baryon asymmetry of the universe, and (c) the dark matter are the keys to reveal the history of the universe. In this theoretical research project, which is one of the projects in the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas "Revealing the history of the universe with underground particle and nuclear research", we have worked on various topics related to above three puzzles, and published 141 papers and gave 104 talks in conferences and workshops. For example, we have given predictions on the neutrino physics, including the neutrinoless double beta decay that is searched for in the research projects A01 and A02 in this Innovative Area. We have also studied various phenomenological aspects on dark matter and clarified the roles of the direct search experiments conducted by the research projects B01 and B02 in this Innovative Area.

We have systematically explored methods to probe whether the unified theory called string theory is the ultimate theory of Nature in terms of observations of phenomena caused by fields and particle in the hidden sector specific to superstring theory. As a result, we have proposed lots of new methods such as the observation of gravitational waves produced by the interaction between black holes and a scalar field called axion, observations of gamma rays from high-energy astrophysical objects and cosmic infrared background radiations, observations of electromagnetic and gravitational waves passing through axion dark matter, new particle searches by accelerator experiments, CMB observations of inflation in the early universe. Further, we have constructed some concrete examples of superstring compactifications that are consistent with both the standard model of elementary particles and cosmology.

There are increasing observational evidence of the existence of accelerated expansion era in the very early Universe, called inflation. On the other hand, the physics of ``reheating'' after inflation has been unclear both theoretically and observationally. I studied the physics of reheating in detail, and found rich phenomena which had not been known so far, for example, the decay of Higgs vacuum during reheating, violent particle production phenomena, reheating through gravitational effects. All these results are important as new probes of inflationary Universe.

In order to open up a new observational/experimental window to the ultimate theory, we have studied axions from both the cosmophysics phenomenology aspect and the superstring/supergravity aspect and have published more than 200 papers. The main achievements are demonstarations of the axion bose nova phenemenon caused by a rotating black hole by numerical simulations and the discovery of its observability by gravitational wave experiments, derivation of a parameter range for axion to resolve the conflict between the high energy gamma-ray observations and the infrared background observation, evaluations of the influences of axions produced by the decay of heavy moduli on cosmic microwave background and derivation of constraints on the compactification of extra-dimensions on the basis of this estimation, derivation of constraints on elementary particle models from cosmological influences of axionic isocurvature perturbations and topological defects.
