    Abstract Atomic mobility and thermodynamic assessments of the fcc Co–Cr–Mn system were performed using the ternary diffusion data. Diffusion couples in the Co–rich region of the ternary fcc Co–Cr–Mn system were prepared and annealed at 900, 1050, and 1150 °C. The concentration profiles across the joint interface were measured using an electron probe microstructure analysis technique. The interdiffusivities were evaluated using the Whittle–Green method, and the atomic mobility parameters of the fcc phase were evaluated via numerical analysis of the diffusional flux. The thermodynamic parameters of the binary fcc Cr–Mn alloy were also determined using the CALPHAD method during the assessment of the mobility parameters in the Co–Cr–Mn system. The atomic mobility and thermodynamic descriptions obtained in this study were used to simulate the ternary concentration profiles. The excellent agreement between the experimental and simulated diffusion data validates the atomic mobility and thermodynamic parameters evaluated in this study. Graphical Abstract

    Chromium sulfide produced by self-propagating high temperature synthesis, which is a simple and low cost process, was investigated on the properties of tribology and microstructures. The material showed coefficeient of kinetic (or dynamic) friction of less than 0.18, which is preferable value as a solid lubricant. Also, the material indicated that though frictional property degraded once as oxidation accompanied with heat treatment,it was improved after further oxidation.

    Fe2(Dy0.73Tb0.27) alloys have been received great attention as vibration-powered generator materials. In this study, the fiber shape single crystals of Fe2(Dy0.73Tb0.27) alloys were prepared by the micro-pulling-down method. Optimum conditions for the crystal growth, the solidification behavior and physical properties of them were investigated. As the results, the single crystal wires approximately 2 mm in diameter could be grown by 30mm/h pulling-down-rate using CaO crucible under Ar+6%H2 atomspherre. The effective distribution coefficient of them approximately is unit, suggesting that the macroscopic segregation is very small. The saturation magnetostriction increases with increasing the annealing temperature although the crystals annealed higher than 1173 K were broken. In addition, Zr additions increase the saturation magnetization. The sample annealed at 1173 K showed the maximum saturation magnetization about 1900ppm.

    A visualization method has been developed, where local and transient anodic events occurring in initiation processes of stress corrosion cracking can be observed in a wide window and in real time. The initiation process was found to be intermittent and very small-scale anodic events and their repassivation. Cracks tend to initiate at the location where a few anodic events occur in proximity to each other. In most cases, oxide inclusions containing Si, Mg, or Al, provided initiation sites. Stress corrosion cracks tend to retard when they reach δ-ferrite located on grain boundaries (especially on triple points). We may be able to effectively improve SCC initiation life of steels by locatingδ-ferrite on grain boundaries as much as up to a few % of volume fraction.

    Heusler alloys such as Ni-Mn-Ga and Ni-Mn-In alloys have received much attention as ferromagnetic shape memory alloys and metamagnetic shape memory alloys. These alloys are formed the solid solution of bcc-base ordered structure at high temperature in the composition range from NiMn-B2 phase to Ni2MnX-L21 phase. This bcc-base ordered phase transform to the martensite phase with unique magnetic properties. In the case of alloys with Al, Ga, In, Sb of metalloid groups, the stability of bcc ordered structure have been studied well, but in the case of Si, Ge, Pb, Bi in the same metalloid groups, those are not clarified yet. In this study, Ni59Mn50-xXx(X : Si, Ge, Pb, Bi)was prepared and the phase stability of these alloys in the temperature range from 850. C to 1000. C was investigated. Alloys added small amount of Si and Ge showed the martensitic structure, and the solubility of Si and Ge in the NiMn-B2 structure is 4 at%and 7at%, respectively. Both Ni50Mn35Si15 and Ni50Mn35Ge15 alloys showed the single-phase structure. But the crystalline structure of these alloys is. 2 phase with Ni3Mn2Si2 structure not solid solution phase with bcc ordered structure. In the Ni-Mn-Ge system, 1, 2, T were newly founded. In the case of alloys with Pb and Bi, the solubility of these elements in NiMn-B2 phase is less than 1 at%and the structure of the martensite phase are 2M structure

    Thermodynamic database on Co-base alloys has been constructed based on the experimental determinations and thermodynamic assessments by Calphad (Calculation of Phase Diagrams)approach. Using this database, a new type of Co-base superalloys strengthend by the L1_2 compound of γ' Co_3(Al, W)phase has been designed. The developed wrought Co-base superalloy shows the expected creep strength of 100MPa at 800 oC for 10^5 hours, while the cast Co-base superalloy has been applied to the FSW (Friction Stir Welding)tool for practical use. It is shown that the Co-W thin film and Co-based Heusler alloys are attracted for magnetic recording media and spin electronics, respectively. Furthermore, the optimum conditions for compositions and heat treatment to form porous structure on the surface to develop drug eluting stent have been obtained by microstructural control of γ (fcc)/β (B2)lamellar structure of Co-Al-based alloys.

    We could obtain stably Cr sulfide, Ti and Zr-systems carbosulfides by using the combustion synthesis method. From the transmission electron microscopy, the layered structures were observed in the carbosulfides, as well as MoS2 of the typical solid lubricant. The high-temperature oxidation resistance tests showed that the carbosulfides were difficult to use as dispersants for improving machinability of steel under an oxidation atmosphere because their oxidation resistance degraded over 500℃. On the other hand, their dynamic friction coefficient,μ, indicated 0.11 to 0.12, which was equivalent to MoS2.Finally, it was concluded that the sulfide and carbosulfides could be expected sufficiently as one of the promising solid lubricants.

    Phase stabilities and magnetic properties of the Co- and Ni-based functional Heusler alloys showing magnetic shape memory effect, magnetocaloric effect and half-metallic properties were investigated. By the present project, some new magnetic shape memory alloys, such as NiCoMnAl, FeMnGa and PdFeIn, have been developed and the magnetocaloric properties for the NiCoMnIn alloys have been evaluated. Furthermore, a new halh-metallic magnet Co_2(Ti, Fe)Al showing an excellent half-metallicity has been proposed.

    コンピュータのハードディスク等に用いられるCo-Cr基磁気記録媒体は,急速な高記録密度化に伴う結晶粒径の微細化等のため,熱揺らぎによる記録状態の劣化などが顕在化しつつある.対熱揺らぎ特性の改善には,高い磁気異方性エネルギーを有する磁性薄膜の開発が必要不可欠である.現在,高い磁気異方性を有するFePt-L1_0型合金が注目され,微細な孤立粒子状薄膜を作製するためのプロセスの研究が盛んに行われている.しかし,規則化温度が従来プロセスと比較して高温なことや,磁性粒子の孤立化などで実用化への課題が山積されている. Co-Cr基磁気記録媒体は,Co-richの強磁性hcp構造粒子をCr-richの常磁性hcp構造層が取り囲む2相分離組織となっていることが,優れた磁気記録特性を示す一つの要因であった.この2相分離は,Co-Cr系状態図のCo側の磁気変態点に沿って現れる2相分離に起因していると考えられる.従って,Co-Cr基合金と同様の2相分離組織を示し,高い磁気異方性エネルギーをもつ材料が磁性薄膜材料が次世代磁気記録媒体の候補として適していると考えられる.予備研究の結果より,Co-MoおよびCo-W系がCo-Cr系よりも数倍高い磁気異方性エネルギーを持ち,更に,計算状態図より,これらの系にCo-Cr系と同様の2相分離が存在することが明らかにし,そこで,Co-MoおよびCo-W系を次世代磁気記録媒体の基本系として提案している.更に,Cr, NiAlおよびNiAlV合金を下地層としてCo-W薄膜を作製した結晶配向性および磁気特性について調査した結果,NiAl下地が配向制御だけでなく,磁気特性の改善にも有効であることが明らかとなった.更に,NiAlを下地としてCo-W薄膜の膜厚を変化させた結果,僅か10nmの膜厚でも1kOe以上の高い保磁力をもち磁気記録媒体として有望であることを示した.

    Shape memory (SM) material which possesses double functions of thermo-sensor and actuator is one of the typical smart materials. Although the SM devices yield larger power and displacement than the ferroelectric one, they have a very serious problem in which the response for input signal is too slow, because the thermal conductivity in the SM devices is a rate determining process. Recently, ferromagnetic Shape memory (FSM) alloys that can be operated by magnetic field have been developed in the Ni-Mn-Ga system. In the present study, new type of FSMAs, Co-Ni-Al alloys with B2 bcc ordered structure were investigated.. The details of results obtained by the present work are as follows: (1) Transformation temperatures: Martensitic transformation temperature (Ms) and Curie temperature (Tc) were determined by DSC and VSM measurement. Some alloys have Ms and To in relatively high temperatures region over room temperature. This result means that the Co-Ni-Al alloys can be a candidate of the promising FSMA. (2) Crystal structure: The parent and martensits phases have B2 and Ll_0 structures, respectively. The c/a ration of the Ll_0, phase is 0.81. (3) Shape memory and mechanical properties: Coexistence with γ phase improves the ductility of alloys and a perfect SM can be obtained by a training treatment. (4) Magnetic properties: Magnetic anisotropies of austenite and martensite phases were determined using single crystals, and magnetostriction of about 0.3% was detected.
