Hydrogen can be stored in the interstitial sites of the lattices of intermetallic compounds. To date, intermetallic compound LaNi5 or related LaNi5-based alloys are known to be practical hydrogen storage materials owing to their higher volumetric hydrogen densities, making them a compact hydrogen storage method and allowing stable reversible hydrogen absorption and desorption reactions to take place at room temperature below 1.0 MPa. By contrast, gravimetric hydrogen density is required for key improvements (e.g., gravimetric hydrogen density of LaNi5: 1.38 mass%). Although hydrogen storage materials have typically been evaluated for their hydrogen storage properties below 10 MPa, reactions between hydrogen and materials can be facilitated above 1 GPa because the chemical potential of hydrogen dramatically increases at a higher pressure. This indicates that high-pressure experiments above 1 GPa could clarify the latent hydrogen absorption reactions below 10 MPa and potentially explore new hydride phases. In this study, we investigated the hydrogen absorption reaction of LaNi5 above 1 GPa at room temperature to understand their potential hydrogen storage capacities. The high-pressure experiments on LaNi5 with and without an internal hydrogen source (BH3NH3) were performed using a multi-anvil-type high-pressure apparatus, and the reactions were observed using in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction with an energy dispersive method. The results showed that 2.07 mass% hydrogen was absorbed by LaNi5 at 6 GPa. Considering the unit cell volume expansion, the estimated hydrogen storage capacity could be 1.5 times higher than that obtained from hydrogen absorption reaction below 1.0 MPa at 303 K. Thus, 33% of the available interstitial sites in LaNi5 remained unoccupied by hydrogen atoms under conventional conditions. Although the hydrogen-absorbed LaNi5Hx (x < 9) was maintained below 573 K at 10 GPa, LaNi5Hx began decomposing into NiH, and the formation of a new phase was observed at 873 K and 10 GPa. The new phase was indexed to a hexagonal or trigonal unit cell with a ≈ 4.44 Å and c ≈ 8.44 Å. Further, the newly-formed phase was speculated to be a new hydride phase because the Bragg peak positions and unit cell parameters were inconsistent with those reported for the La-Ni intermetallic compounds and La-Ni hydride phases.

Abstract Hydrides based on magnesium and intermetallic compounds provide a viable solution to the challenge of energy storage from renewable sources, thanks to their ability to absorb and desorb hydrogen in a reversible way with a proper tuning of pressure and temperature conditions. Therefore, they are expected to play an important role in the clean energy transition and in the deployment of hydrogen as an efficient energy vector. This review, by experts of Task 40 ‘Energy Storage and Conversion based on Hydrogen’ of the Hydrogen Technology Collaboration Programme of the International Energy Agency, reports on the latest activities of the working group ‘Magnesium- and Intermetallic alloys-based Hydrides for Energy Storage’. The following topics are covered by the review: multiscale modelling of hydrides and hydrogen sorption mechanisms; synthesis and processing techniques; catalysts for hydrogen sorption in Mg; Mg-based nanostructures and new compounds; hydrides based on intermetallic TiFe alloys, high entropy alloys, Laves phases, and Pd-containing alloys. Finally, an outlook is presented on current worldwide investments and future research directions for hydrogen-based energy storage.

REMgNi4-based alloys, RE(2−x)MgxNi4 (RE: rare-earth metals; 0 < x < 2), with a AuBe5-type crystal structure, exhibit reversible hydrogen absorption and desorption reactions, which are known as hydrogen storage properties. These reactions involve formation of three hydride phases. The hydride formation pressures and hydrogen storage capacities are related to the radii of the RE(2−x)MgxNi4, which in turn are dependent on the radii and compositional ratios of the RE and Mg atoms. The crystal structures formed during hydrogen absorption reactions are the key to understanding the hydrogen storage properties of RE(2−x)MgxNi4. Therefore, in this review, we provide an overview of the crystal structures in the hydrogen absorption reactions focusing on RE(2−x)MgxNi4.

Materials science on hydrides with high-density hydrogen was greatly advanced; by synthesizing new hydrides composed mainly of 3d-Transition-Metals (TMs) for which hydrogen-densification is difficult (so called, the Hydride-Gap), by analyzing and building-up databases on them, and by enhancing their energy-related functions. The typical research outputs are as follows; synthesizing of the novel high-density hydrides composed of complexes with six- to nine-fold hydrogen coordination, clarifying the densification process, and developing as fast-ionic conducting materials for battery device application.

NaAlH4 is light weight and high hydrogen density material but the hydrogen desorption speed is very slow in the solid state. Ti-additives improves the speed 10 times. It is important to reveal the mechanism of the kinetics improvement by the Ti-additives to make NaAlH4 practical hydrogen storage material. The purpose of this study is to reveal the improvement mechanism of Ti-additives with neutron scattering, X-ray absorption, X-ray anomalous scattering and positron annihilation. It was found that the chemical state of Al is changed by Ti-additives. Also, existing of two type of Ti position was found: one is the Al site of NaAlH4 and the other is Ti-Al allow outside of NaAlH4.

A deutrization cell for high-pressure neutron diffraction measurement has been developed and was applied to in situ obseravtion of the deuterization process of iron at pressures up to 10 GPa. In solid-solution face-centered cubic FeDx formed at 988 K and 6.3 GPa, deuterium atoms occupied the octahedral and tetrahedral interstitial sites of the metallattice with an occupancy of 0.532(9) and 0.056(5), respectively, which gave a deuterium composition x of 0.64. During the deuterization process, the metal lattice was found to expand sucessively and linearly with deuterium composition. The phase boundary between the hydrogen rich phases EuHx-III and EuHx-IV was determined by X-ray diffraction and infrared absorption measurements over a temperature range of 300-600 K and a pressure range of 5-10 GPa. The III-IV phase transition was likely accompanied by hydrogen absorption and resulting valence change of Eu cation: EuHx(x=2.2, divalent)→EuHx (x=3, trivalent).

Combination of neutron scattering and large crystal-growth techniques obtained new and important results on the relation between magnetism and electric conductivity for metallic magnets including superconductors. (1)The magnetic-superconducting phase diagram was comprehensively studied for cuprate superconductors by neutron scattering and X-ray scattering. As a result, we succeeded in discriminating common and material-dependent features of the phase diagram, which provide key information towards higher superconducting transition temperature. We proposed a simple model to describe qualitatively the unique and common magnetic excitation of metallic magnets which cannot be understood by a conventional spin-wave model. (2)High quality large single crystal of Cu2MnAl was reproducibly obtained and vertically focused neutron polarizer was constructed for the first time in Japan.

We have worked on the functional advancement of complex hydrides as solid electrolyte and development of new electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. It was found that the ion substitution for Li+ and [BH4]. complex anion is effective to improve the ionic conductivity of LiBH4. As a result, we succeeded in synthesizing new complex hydrides such as Li_3N_2IH_4 and Na_2BNH_6 with fast ionic conductivities. We also confirmed the lithium deintercalation of Li_xBC, a potential candidate for high-capacity electrode materials, from x=1 to x approximate to 0. 5.

Functional advancement of aluminum-based hydrogen storage materials was studied. Synthesis conditions of aluminum hydrides, AlH_3, were optimized, and the crystal and surface structures, the thermodynamic stabilities, the hydrogen desorption properties and their correlations were investigated. We confirmed that the presence of amorphous Al_2O_3 andχ-Al_2O_3 on the surface may prevent the hydrogen desorption reaction of AlH_3, which can be promoted by milling process under the atmosphere control.
