Abstract In this study, a clear-air turbulence event was reproduced using a high-resolution (250 m) large-eddy simulation in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model, and the resulting wind field was used in a flight simulation to estimate the vertical acceleration changes experienced by an aircraft. Conditions were simulated for 16 December 2014 when many intense turbulence encounters (and one accident) associated with an extratropical cyclone were reported over the Tokyo area. Based on observations and the WRF simulation, the turbulence was attributed to shear-layer instability near the jet stream axis. Simulation results confirmed the existence of the instability, which led to horizontal vortices with an amplitude of vertical velocity from +20 to −12 m s−1. The maximum eddy dissipation rate was estimated to be over 0.7, which suggested that the model reproduced turbulence conditions likely to cause strong shaking in large-size aircraft. A flight simulator based on aircraft equations of motion estimated vertical acceleration changes of +1.57 to +0.08 G on a Boeing 777-class aircraft. Although the simulated amplitudes of the vertical acceleration changes were smaller than those reported in the accident (+1.8 to −0.88 G), the model successfully reproduced aircraft motion using a combination of atmospheric and flight simulations.

We have conducted large-eddy simulations of laminar separation control by the DBD plasma actuator over NACA0015 airfoil. The control effects are investigated for the case of the single plasma actuator and the case of the multiple plasma actuator. Reynolds number based on the chord length is 63,000 and the angle of attack is 16 degs. For the case of the single plasma actuator, the reattached flow separates again near the trailing edge. On the other hand, separation control by the multiple plasma actuator can suppress the re-separation near the trailing edge. This suppression leads to improvement of the lift coefficient compared to the case of single plasma actuator.

Aerodynamics of horizontal axis wind turbine blades of a simple experimental model with an active flow control using a DBD plasma actuator has been studied by large-eddy simulations based on a high-order accurate and resolution computational method. Large-scale parallel computations have been conducted using message passing interfaces and 18,800 cores of the K computer. Results correspond to first revolution after the DBD plasma actuator starts have been presented. The impacts of the DBD plasma actuator on flow fields around the blades have been shown. Up to a 20% increase in revolution-averaged torque generation has been attained. Moreover, this improvement of torque generation due to the DBD plasma actuator has been similar to those reported in the experiment.

We have conducted large-eddy simulations of the turbulent separation control by the DBD plasma actuator over NACA0015 airfoil. Reynolds number based on the chord length is 1,600,000 and the angle of attack is 20.1 degs. The location and operating conditions of the plasma actuator are changed as the numerical parameter. It is clarified that the effective mechanism for the turbulent-separation control by the burst mode is to induce the pairing of the large-scale vortex shed from the turbulent-separation shear-layer. The large-scale vortex results in the not only the momentum induction from freestream to the boundary layer but also the lift improvement through its convection. In addition to this control mechanism, various control effects can be achieved depending on the settings of the DBD plasma actuator.

This paper studied control of separated flow over an NACA0015 airfoil by a single dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator installed at the leading edge using large-eddy simulations with high-order accurate and high-resolution numerical scheme. A chord-based Reynolds number of 260,000 and an angle of attack of 18.8 degrees were considered. A phenomenological DBD plasma-actuator model was employed to provide the spatial body force distribution. The unsteady operation so-called a burst mode actuation was introduced and two burst frequencies of 1 and 6 with constant burst ratio of 0.1 were analyzed. Effects of the burst frequency on flow control performance were discussed in detail. Results showed DBD plasma actuator with burst frequency of 6 provided better control authority in comparison with the burst frequency of 1.

Large-eddy simulations of a separated flow over NACA0006, NACA0012 and NACA0015 airfoils, which are controlled by a DBD plasma actuator, are conducted to investigate the effect of an airfoil configuration on separation control. Reynolds number is 63,000 for all cases. In these simulations, the position and operation conditions of a DBD plasma actuator are varied as the simulation parameters. The most effective position for separation suppression is near the separation point for all airfoils. The burst frequency with 6 is more effective than 1 to increase the lift-drag ratio in present conditions. The effect of separation control becomes smaller for the cases with larger reverse flow region, and the development of this region significantly influence on the control. Strouhal number based on the momentum thickness is almost the same value in each airfoil case. These values of the burst frequency 6 cases are similar to effective Strouhal number suggested in the past study.

Results showed that the DBD plasma actuator could change dynamic behavior of shear layer separated from the leading edge and lead to reattachment near the leading edge when the actuation with burst frequency of 6. However, it was not able to lead to fully attached flow on the upper surface of the wing due to the adverse pressure gradient. Lastly improvement of time-averaged aerodynamic performance attained by flow control was also discussed.

In these simulations, position and operation conditions of a DBD plasma actuator, such as the burst frequency, the degree of induced flow, are varied as simulation parameters. I attempted to theoretically elucidate the multi-scale interaction of the flow by performing a global stability analysis of the fluid for a non-stationary and non-uniform flow field. Focusing on the energy transient amplification in the non-orthogonal mode, we succeeded in acquiring some new findings on the drag reduction of the spanwise wall oscillation and the transition delay of the boundary layer. In the spanwise wall oscillation, oblique streaks grow and the original streak weakens, which is consistent with the result of maximum transient amplification of energy. And, it was confirmed that a small oblique flow structure existed near the wall in the boundary layer, which also coincided with the maximum transient amplification mode of energy. In addition, new discoveries and proposals were made regarding the transition of the three-dimensional boundary layer of the aircraft swept wing and the transition delay effect of micro distributed roughness.

This research is targeting flow field in an oscillating channel or around a two-dimensional hill. That is non-equilibrium turbulent under acceleration and deceleration of the mainstream, in which turbulence production and dissipation are not balanced. We studied a mechanism to explain and control turbulence coherent structure such as low speed streak and streamwise vortex generated near the wall surface. In particular, we developed a program code to compute transient growth of non-modal stability of the flow, and analyzed the stability on the base flow that changed in spatiotemporal. Turbulence structure by direct numerical simulation was compared with that by the linear analysis and we obtained useful knowledge for constructing a smart flow control strategy.
