Recent developments have shown that not only are AI and robotics growing more sophisticated, but also these fields are evolving together. The applications that emerge from this trend will break current limitations and ensure that robotic decision making and functionality are more autonomous, connected, and interactive in a way which will support people in their daily lives. However, in areas such as healthcare robotics, legal and ethical concerns will arise as increasingly advanced intelligence functions are incorporated into robotic systems. Using a case study, this paper proposes a unique design-centered approach which tackles the issue of data protection and privacy risk in human-robot interaction.

<title>Abstract</title>The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into human society mandates that their decision-making process is explicable to users, as exemplified in Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics. Such human interpretability calls for explainable AI (XAI), of which this paper cites various models. However, the transaction between computable accuracy and human interpretability can be a trade-off, requiring answers to questions about the negotiable conditions and the degrees of AI prediction accuracy that may be sacrificed to enable user-interpretability. The extant research has focussed on technical issues, but it is also desirable to apply a branch of ethics to deal with the trade-off problem. This scholarly domain is labelled coarse ethics in this study, which discusses two issues vis-à-vis AI prediction as a type of evaluation. First, which formal conditions would allow trade-offs? The study posits two minimal requisites: adequately high coverage and order-preservation. The second issue concerns conditions that could justify the trade-off between computable accuracy and human interpretability, to which the study suggests two justification methods: impracticability and adjustment of perspective from machine-computable to human-interpretable. This study contributes by connecting ethics to autonomous systems for future regulation by formally assessing the adequacy of AI rationales.

The aim of this chapter is to offer a fundamental framework for a legal system focused on safety issues involving New Generation Robots (NGRs). This framework is offered in response to the lack of clarity regarding robot safety guidelines despite the impending development and release of tens of thousands of robots into workplaces and homes around the world. The authors propose a Safety Intelligence (SI) concept for NGRs that addresses issues tied to open texture risk for robots that will have a relatively high level of autonomy in interactions with humans. We express doubt that Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics model will be a suitable foundation for creating an artificial moral agency for ensuring robot safety. Instead, we will offer an alternative Legal Machine Language (LML) model that utilizes non-verbal information from robot sensors and actuators to protect both humans and robots. To implement an LML model, robotists must design a biomorphic nerve reflex system, and legal scholars must define safety content for robots having a certain degree of “self-awareness

The field of artificial intelligence (AI) has made tremendous advances in the last two decades, but as smart as AI is now, it is getting smarter and becoming more autonomous. This raises a host of challenges to current legal doctrine, including whether AI/algorithms should count as ‘speech’, whether AI should be regulated under antitrust and criminal law statutes, and whether AI should be considered as an agent under agency law or be held responsible for injuries under tort law. This book contains chapters from US and international law scholars on the role of law in an age of increasingly smart AI, addressing these and other issues that are critical to the evolution of the field.

One of the reasons that future robots will enhance their intelligence and actions in an unstructured environment is because of their “networked” feature. Current robot designs have difficulty in understanding unstructured environments due to the inherent diversity and unpredictability of phenomena in the real world. However, new developments such as ubiquitous computing, cloud computing, the Internet of things and next-generation internet technologies will make it easier for networked robots to obtain structured information about their physical environment. The formation of cloud-enabled robotics by advanced technology will be tightly integrated into the virtual and real world, and this will strengthen the impact of cyberspace to the real world. Although these developments may help reduce Open-Texture Risk from the networked robots, risk will be transferred from the physical world into the virtual world. In this paper, we will try to address some of the resulting legal implications. This paper is divided into four parts, the first part defines the meaning of cloud-enabled robotics; the second part analyzes how the Collective Dynamics derived from virtual and real world with autonomous behaviors by intelligent robots affect Open-Texture Risk to expand a Larger Range and bring a Deeper Impact; the third part explains the dispute of legal issues in future technology of cloud-enabled robotics; the final part analyzes the Safety Intelligence of cloud-enabled robotics in a long-term perspective, and the theoretical control framework that we propose in solving Open-Texture Risk.
