Abstract A current key challenge in 2D materials is the realization of emergent quantum phenomena in hetero structures via controlling the moiré potential created by the periodicity mismatch between adjacent layers, as highlighted by the discovery of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene. Generally, the lattice structure of the original host material remains unchanged even after the moiré superlattice is formed. However, much less attention is paid for the possibility that the moiré potential can also modify the original crystal structure itself. Here, it is demonstrated that octahedral MoTe2 which is unstable in bulk is stabilized in a commensurate MoTe2/graphene hetero‐bilayer due to the moiré potential created between the two layers. It is found that the reconstruction of electronic states via the moiré potential is responsible for this stabilization, as evidenced by the energy‐gap opening at the Fermi level observed by angle‐resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopies. The present results provide a fresh approach to realize novel 2D quantum phases by utilizing the moiré potential.

Abstract Fermi-surface (FS) nesting originating from Peierls’ idea of electronic instabilities in one-dimensional materials is a key concept to stabilize charge-density wave (CDW), whereas its applicability to two-dimensional (2D) materials is under intensive debate. Here we report unusual CDW associated with the higher-order FS nesting in monolayer 2D VS2. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy uncovered stripe CDW with $$\sqrt {21} R10.9^\circ \times \sqrt 3 R30^\circ$$ periodicity together with an energy-gap opening on the entire FS. We suggest that this CDW involves the higher-order FS-nesting vector 2q twice larger than that of the normal one (q), as supported by the anomalies in the calculated phonon dispersion and electronic susceptibility. The present results suggest that the cooperation of q and 2q nesting leads to the fully gapped CDW state unlike the case of conventional single q nesting which produces a partial gap, pointing to an intriguing mechanism of CDW transition.

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs), exhibiting magnetic bistability and a large energy barrier to the magnetization relaxation, are attractive candidates for realizing efficient spintronic devices such as ultra-high-density memories and quantum computers. Here, we demonstrate robust spin-polarization of a quintessential SMM, the double-decker bis(phthalocyaninato)terbium(III) (TbPc2) molecules, adsorbed on the bilayer Co islands on Au(111) using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, visualizing the switching of the SMM spin with submolecular resolution. Our results reveal that molecular spins of TbPc2 are antiferromagnetically coupled to the magnetization of the Co island, irrespective of the bonding configuration of the molecule. Stable spin-polarization is inferred from the substantial hysteresis observed in the magnetization curves measured over the molecules. This is in contrast to the reports of near-zero remanence for the bulk TbPc2 crystals and the TbPc2 molecules on a nonmagnetic substrate. The observation of a significant hysteretic opening can be attributed to the large magnetic anisotropy barrier of the molecule and the suppression of the quantum tunneling process. We anticipate that our approach of using the substrate to control and enhance the properties of a TbPc2 SMM will accelerate further research toward realization of SMM-based functional spintronic devices.

An outstanding challenging in nanomagnetism is the quantitative understanding of magnetization reversal process of nanostructures. We investigate the magnetization reversal of individual Co islands on Cu(111). We measure switching fields <i>H</i>SW of single Co islands using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy at 8 K. The switching field changes with island size. The switching field increases with size and reaches a maximum value of 2.4 T at a size of 5500 atoms, and decreases for larger islands. To discuss magnetization reversal processes, we extract the energy barrier &Delta;<i>E</i> for magnetization reversal as a function of island size. Our analysis reveals a crossover of the magnetization reversal from an exchange-spring behavior to domain wall formation with increasing size at around 7500 atoms.

When electrons are confined to nanostructures, quantum interference takes place due to their wave-particle duality. Using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, we studied the influence of quantum interference of electrons on the spatial distribution of the spin polarization within a single magnetic nanostructure. We find changes in both the magnitude and sign of the spin polarization on a subnanometer scale. We compare our experimental results with <I>ab initio</I> calculations of the spin-resolved local density of states (LDOS). We find that the modulation of the spin-polarization at a given energy can be ascribed to the different magnitudes of spatially modulated majority states and non-modulated minority states contributing to the total LDOS.

Phys. Lett.

Phys.
