Abstract Preceding a core-collapse supernova (CCSN), various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande (SK) via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova (pre-SN) neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming CCSN can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and SK, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-SN neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and SK on pre-SN neutrino detection. A pre-SN alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the SK detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-SN neutrino signal from a 15 M star within 510 pc of the Earth at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. For a Betelgeuse-like model with optimistic parameters, it can provide early warnings up to 12 hr in advance.

Abstract We have established a method to measure picograms-per-gram (pg g−1) levels of 238U and 232Th in scintillation films by combining the dry ashing method and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Trace amounts of 238U and 232Th were measured in up to 2 g of scintillation film with almost 100% collection efficiency. This paper details the experimental procedure, including the pretreatment of the samples and labware, detection limit of the method, collection efficiencies of 238U and 232Th, and measurement of 238U and 232Th in a polyethylene naphthalate film. This method is also applicable to 238U and 232Th measurements in other low-background organic materials for rare-event search experiments.

Abstract A new ultra-low background high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector has been installed at the Kamioka underground experimental site. The background count rate in the energy range from 40 keV to 2700 keV is about 25% lower than that of the first HPGe detector installed in 2016, which has the same detector specification and similar shielding geometry. This paper describes the shielding configuration, including the cleaning of the material surface, the comparison of calibration data and simulation, the time variation of the background spectra, the sample measurement procedure, and some results of the radioactivity in the selected samples.

Abstract This paper reports the development and detailed properties of about 13 metric tons of gadolinium sulfate octahydrate, $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$, which has been dissolved into Super-Kamiokande (SK) in the summer of 2020. We evaluate the impact of radioactive impurities in $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ on diffuse supernova neutrino background searches and solar neutrino observation and confirm the need to reduce radioactive and fluorescent impurities by about three orders of magnitude from commercially available high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$. In order to produce ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$, we have developed a method to remove impurities from gadolinium oxide, Gd2O3, consisting of acid dissolution, solvent extraction, and pH control processes, followed by a high-purity sulfation process. All of the produced ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ is assayed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and high-purity germanium detectors to evaluate its quality. Because of the long measurement time of high-purity germanium detectors, we have employed several underground laboratories for making parallel measurements including the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc in Spain, Boulby in the UK, and Kamioka in Japan. In the first half of production, the measured batch purities were found to be consistent with the specifications. However, in the latter half, the $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ contained one order of magnitude more 228Ra than the budgeted mean contamination. This was correlated with the corresponding characteristics of the raw material Gd2O3, in which an intrinsically large contamination was present. Based on their modest impact on SK physics, they were nevertheless introduced into the detector. To reduce 228Ra for the next stage of gadolinium loading to SK, a new process has been successfully established.

Kinetic Inductance Detector (KID) is an exciting device that promises high sensitivity to photons from submillimeter waves to gamma-rays with large format arrays. The KID consists of a superconductor thin film microwave resonator combined with a transmission line. When energy accumulates, Cooper pairs in the superconductor films are broken. Then quasiparticles are produced. This change increases the kinetic inductance in the resonant circuits and can be monitored by the transmission line. We propose that Lumped Element KID (LEKID) is implemented on Calcium Fluoride (CaF2) substrate for next-generation astroparticle experiments. 48Ca is one of the double-beta decay nuclei, and 19F is sensitive to spin-dependent elastic scattering with dark matter. The LEKID on CaF2 can be cooled to 15mK using a dilution refrigerator. At this stage, the quality factors of the LEKID are about 500×103, and measurement for particle detection using 241Am particle irradiation is also demonstrated at this low temperature.

Abstract The decay of the primordial isotopes 238U, 235U, 232Th, and 40K has contributed to the terrestrial heat budget throughout the Earth's history. Hence, the individual abundance of those isotopes are key parameters in reconstructing contemporary Earth models. The geoneutrinos produced by the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium have been observed with the Kamioka Liquid‐Scintillator Antineutrino Detector (KamLAND). Those measurements have been improved with more than 18‐year observation time, and improvement in detector background levels mainly with an 8‐year nearly reactor‐free period, which now permit spectroscopy with geoneutrinos. Our results yield the first constraint on both uranium and thorium heat contributions. The KamLAND result is consistent with geochemical estimations based on elemental abundances of chondritic meteorites and mantle peridotites. The High‐Q model is disfavored at 99.76% C.L. and a fully radiogenic model is excluded at 5.2σ assuming a homogeneous heat producing element distribution in the mantle.

Abstract We present the results of a search for core-collapse supernova neutrinos, using long-term KamLAND data from 2002 March 9 to 2020 April 25. We focus on the electron antineutrinos emitted from supernovae in the energy range of 1.8–111 MeV. Supernovae will make a neutrino event cluster with the duration of ∼10 s in the KamLAND data. We find no neutrino clusters and give the upper limit on the supernova rate to be 0.15 yr−1 with a 90% confidence level. The detectable range, which corresponds to a >95% detection probability, is 40–59 kpc and 65–81 kpc for core-collapse supernovae and failed core-collapse supernovae, respectively. This paper proposes to convert the supernova rate obtained by the neutrino observation to the Galactic star formation rate. Assuming a modified Salpeter-type initial mass function, the upper limit on the Galactic star formation rate is <(17.5–22.7) M yr−1 with a 90% confidence level.

Abstract A search for neutrinos produced in coincidence with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) was conducted with the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector. Between December 2008 and March 2017, the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network recorded 2208 GRBs that occurred during normal SK operation. Several time windows around each GRB were used to search for coincident neutrino events. No statistically significant signal in excess of the estimated backgrounds was detected. The $\bar\nu_e$ fluence in the range from 8 MeV to 100 MeV in positron total energy for $\bar\nu_e+p\rightarrow e^{+}+n$ was found to be less than $\rm 5.07\times10^5$ cm$^{-2}$ per GRB at a 90% confidence level. For all GRBs, upper bounds were obtained on the fluence as a function of neutrino energy. Additionally, for GRBs at known distances, upper limits were set for the neutrino energy emission at the GRB.

<title>Abstract</title> Chemical extraction using a molecular recognition resin named “Empore Radium Rad Disk” was developed to improve sensitivity for the low concentration of radium (Ra). Compared with the previous method, the extraction process speed was improved by a factor of three and the recovery rate for $^{226}$Ra was also improved from $81\pm4\%$ to $&amp;gt;99.9\%$. The sensitivity on the $10^{-1}$ mBq level was achieved using a high-purity germanium detector. This improved method was applied to determine $^{226}$Ra in Gd$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3{\cdot}$8H$_2$O which will be used in the Super-Kamiokande Gadolinium project. The improvement and measurement results are reported in this paper.

International collaboration among world underground laboratories has been developed aiming at the large synergies of sharing the common technologies. Concerning the search for dark matter in which international unification is occurring, Japanese team decided to join the foreign project bringing the technologies developed in this innovative area. Concerning the directional measurement of dark matter, Kamioka underground laboratory serves as a world-wide hub of its developmental efforts. As for the future innovative technology of scintillating bolometers, scintillation crystal technology in our area and bolometer technology in Korea can be combined and cooperative development has been started. These cooperative work on the basis of common technologies will secure the continuous leadership in the field of underground particle and nuclear research.

In this activity, the experimental projects located at Kamioka underground have cooperated on the common basis of ultra-low radioactivity techniques and science among them has been bridged by particle cosmology theories aiming at revealing the history of the universe. We have successfully promoted varieties of close collaborations through the frequent operational/executive meetings. At the same time, the newly defined our science area, originally spread in diverse fields, has organized common technologies and interests. Consequently, mobility and career path of young researchers have been increased. We have held many domestic/international conferences with new events such as tutorial and panel discussion and we developed many collaborations and interdisciplinary researches within/beyond our innovative area.

We know that there exists unknown matter in the universe called dark matter that amounts 5 to 6 times more than the ordinary matter. However, we do not know what they are. There are varieties of candidates for dark matter. Some interact with the ordinary matter and kick out the nucleus and some emit gamma rays when they hit the target material of the detector. Our detector, using 835 kg of liquid xenon as a target material has a characteristics of having very low energy threshold and the ability to detect e/gamma events as well as nuclear recoils. Therefore we are able to make high sensitive searches for low mass dark matter and a new type of dark matter that emits gamma rays. After the observation lasted more than one year, we could not find dark matter, but set very stringent limits for those candidates. We have also demonstrated that we are able to make the detector bigger and be able to achieve much higher sensitive searches in future.

R&D studies on a new type of liquid scintillator with nano-particles. We selected four type of nano-compounds made of CaCO3, which contains Ca and used as target substance for future double neutrino experiments. It was found that none of the nano-compounds are stably suspended in liquid scintillator which is pseudo-cumene base. Surface treatment is crucial for nano-compounds to be stably suspended, so it is important to study about this context.

We have succeeded to construct the world largest liquid Xenon detector in order to make an observation of Dark Matter in the laboratory experiment. By the calibration data to understand the detector revealed that we have large light yields which shows the high sensitivity for the dark matter search. We have also succeeded to reduce the most serious background of Kr to the level of 2. 7 ppt which is the world lowest background level achieved. The most of the source of backgrounds are identified and we are ready to make an observation.
