    <p>This paper investigates, from an anthropological perspective, representation of migrants' identity with reference to tombs built by Koreans (particularly first generation) who have migrated and settled in Japan. That is the plurality of identity which also includes ethnicity. The tombs which are dealt with in this paper stand in private cemeteries for Koreans in Japan (namely, an exclusive one for the Kyoangsan Kim family association and a communal one at Korai-ji, a Korean temple). Most families involved in building them could be described as active participants in the Korean community in Japan. Tombs in such cemeteries do not differ in their shape from other Japanese tombs. However, the contents of the inscription on the tombstones are original and very distinct from their Japanese counterparts. The deceased's real name in Korean is inscribed in front of the tombstone, and in the Confucianist manner, kani (government position) and bonkyan (family origin) are also added. Even those which have adopted Japanese style inscriptions such as "so-and-so family (or ancestral) tomb," can be differentiated from Japanese tombs as they bear the first names of first generation individuals beside the surnames. This can be seen as a representation of the first generation individual as the "starting point" for the family in Japan. Also, many other headings are often included in inscriptions such as the genealogy of the original ancestor, paso, or iptocho, personal history with a migration diary, profession, and achievement, or a final message or teaching, poems and writings. Next, the paper focuses on family and individual and evaluates two very interesting cases. One of them is the tomb of the S family at the Korai-ji, which possesses the size and decorations matching royal tombs. Its burial master is the Kyoangsan Kim family, though it was not built in their private cemetery. The deceased's family has been working on various sources to classify the tomb as the "Japan ancestor" for the Kyoangsan Kim family. However, from the results of my research and analysis, this huge tomb has been regarded as the starting ancestor and the symbol of family rise in Japan for the S family only, rather than as the "Japan ancestor" for Kyoangsan Kim family. Another example is Mr. P, who is still alive, and who has built his family tomb at Korai-ji. The tomb holds a specially ordered family album and genealogy of present relatives sealed and placed where their ashes are supposed to be laid, for the forthcoming (though it is not known specifically which generation) descendants who might be searching for their own and their ancestor's roots. The album shows photos of the Korean hometown, ancestral tombs, and group photos of all present relatives in Japan and Korea. Each photo bears explanations written by Mr. P himself. Mr. P, who has built his own tomb specifying each small detail himself, is not a special case among those who have their tombs in this cemetery. From unconstructed interviews, it could be said that this phenomenon is the result of worry among the first generation who could not expect the tomb they require from the second generation, their sons, who have a different sense of values. From all tomb inscriptions in these two private cemeteries and the cases of P and S families, it can be considered that it is compatriots in Japan rather than Japanese society in general, of which the individuals and the families who build the tombs are conscious. In other words, individual tombstones are, in the first instance, media for private self-representation, in individual or family units, to other Koreans in Japan. An individual tombstone is a mechanism by which individuality is expressed to comrades in Japan who have their tombs in the same cemetery, the difference (individuality) and the status within the group are expressed, and these expressed</p><p>(View PDF for the rest of the abstract.)</p>

    This study repeatedly interviewed the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake about their life histories before the disaster and the process of rebuilding their lives afterward. It individually and concretely traced the dynamics of how the victims maintained, regenerated and reorganised their social ties in the course of their lives after the tsunami, which uprooted their previous livelihoods and forced them to relocate several times. The study also identified several typical patterns or typologies in these dynamic processes.

    We made studies on the intermarried couples and their children. In what we call cross-cultural families, we attempted to grasp the profiles of families, and shed light on what is the necessary support for them.We focused on the intermarriages between Japanese men and Chinese, Filipino, and Korean women.Also, we made studies about Korean support programs for these families for the comparison purposes. Individual as well as collaborative researches have been done. In the third year, we held a symposium on intermarriages and the related supports. To conclude the research, we compiles a report book (paged 166) that includes intermarried couples, their children, Korean cases, and the Japanese policies. We hope to publish our findings as a book.

    In this study, in order to clarify how people's life rebuilding and regional reconstruction proceeds in the afflicted area of the Tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake, we conducted a long-standing cultural anthropological survey at several research sites and recorded in detail changes of the lifestyle accompanying the movements, changes in the social environment surrounding the affected people, and the regeneration and transformation that occurred in their communities. The process of rebuilding and reconstruction is not uniform and linear. Although it develops diversely and complicatedly due to various factors such as degree of the suffering, the influence of administrative measures, various conditions inherent in families and communities before the disaster, how to engage with volunteers from outside, etc. but we was able to accumulate data to describe the whole aspect of it in our ethnography.

    The present research examined the actual condition of ordinary people in North Korea based on the information by refugees in South Korea, through describing their official mode of social life controlled by the government, sustained difficulties caused by the shortage of food and necessaries, then unofficial domain of practices they explored to cope with the critical difficulties. As the result, social system of national government still functions highly effective in regulating the people, however, planned system of economy has obviously decayed loosing the basis for people, who have been forced to survive, exploring anti-socialistic illegal domain in pursuit for private earnings, and without the reform and opening policy by the central government, deviant behaviors from Socialism have proliferated among the marginalized people and nowadays spreaded through every part and level of life in North Korea, incorporated with the official political principle.

    The objective of the research was to analyze the social mobility of “newcomers" or foreign migrants who arrived in Japan after the late 1980s. To this aim, we collected large-scale data on foreign migrants based on both qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative data were derived from in-depth interviews with 130 foreign migrants (Year 1), while quantitative data were obtained through an Internet-based survey (Year 2 and 3). We have found so far that social mobility patterns vary significantly among the major nationality groups and that they depend more on migrants' region of origin rather than on class origins.

    Recently, we revisited North Korean defectors living in Japan and Korea. Most of these interviewees are North Koreans who are living in the Reeducation-institution (Hana-won) far North Korean or those of 150 who are living in Japan. Due to the fact that most of them want to keep their origin secret, we could not reveal their identity in this report protect our informant's privacy and safety. From these interviews, we found that North Korean defectors were not satisfied with where they live looking far safer place to live. More than half of them said to us that they wanted to migrate to the countries other than Japan or South Korea. One of the reasons was that it was difficult for them to live as North Korean defectors in the two countries, especially those who are living in Japan. Unite States has become the most preferred third country. It is mostly due to the fact that the United states started accepting North Korean defectors as asylum seeker. On Sept. 2004, The Law of Human Rights for North Korea was enacted, this legislation enabled many North Korean defectors in South Korea and Japan to seek "American Dream". It is, therefore, our future important subject to clarify how the North Korean people, who had an opportunity far defecting and going for study to USA, create the network and how they change the relation with their own families, who are living in Korea, Japan, or China. Surprisingly, half of interviewees living in Japan said to us that, if not punished, they want to go back to North Korea. They said it was too difficult far them to settle down in Japan. This is why they are engaged in endless networking activities with their connections in China or other third countries looking for a "Safe Haven". It has been our pleasure to share these findings with you. We will make every effort to exchange the research findings with the North Korean Defectors Research Association. Through this we hope to share these findings with other researchers and practitioners who wants to understand North Korean defector families living in Japan. I wish this interdisciplinary effort will be very instructive for inquiring into our next theme : "How to support the North Korean defectors to their self-support".

  8. Multicultural Calendars : A Focus on Japan

    In the fiscal year of 2004 the focus was put on the collection of multicultural calendars in Japan and their related information. The calendars acquired include Brazilian, Korean, Chinese, Philippine ones used by the respective people living in Japan. Islamic and Orthodox calendars printed in Japan were also collected. We also tried to obtain "lunar calendars" or "older calendars" still used in Amami and Okinawa. In the second year some members were engaged in the supplementary researches in Japan. Most of the members, however, went abroad to compare the previous findings in the global context. The countries visited include Taiwan, U.S.A., Brazil, Iran, Bosnia and Finland. The collected calendars were kept in the office of the representative and the work of making list was initiated. Calendars will be deposited in the National Museum of Ethnology and the data will be opened to the general public through website. The findings were tentatively published as five essays in the Minpaku Tsuushin (vol.109, National Museum of Ethnology, 2005), in which the uses of multicultural calendars among the ethnic minorities in Japan were focused.

    本年度は、従前の調査に引き続いて韓国や日本に定着している元在日コリアンの脱北者のインタビュー調査と関連資料の収集を行った。一昨年から始まった日本に定着している脱北者の調査からは、家族単位で日本に来た人と単身での脱北者の生活適応に大きく差があることが明らかになり、その実態を調べることが出来た。日本や韓国定着に成功した脱北者は、北朝鮮に残してきた家族や親戚に金銭や荷物(古着や医薬品など換金可能な)を送っている。それは、ロシア、中国、韓国、日本など、定着した国を問わず行われている。あたかも北朝鮮の経済危機が生み出した膨大な出稼ぎ民のようである。家族単位で脱北した人たちは、比較的早期に日本や韓国での生活に適応し、北朝鮮への援助を実現しているケースが多い。彼らの援助行為が北朝鮮にいる家族や親戚の生命線になっていると同時に、脱北者自身の新天地での安定を促す要因にもなっていることは興味深い。しかし、家族単位の脱北者に比べ単身での脱北者が、様々な理由から不利な立場に立たされていることは深刻な問題である。 2年間の調査で何より問題として浮かび上がったのは、学齢にある子供の教育の難しさである。新たな体制の社会にいきなり組み込まれ、劣悪な状況で援助もなく、学ぶものを的確に指導する大人が回りにいない脱北者の若者は、適切な教育を受けることなく年齢を重ねていく。脱北者の子供の教育問題は、日本社会のより調和的な未来のためにも社会的関心と援助の対象とされるべきであろう。 本年度の調査や研究では、脱北者の北朝鮮に残された家族への援助や日本や韓国への定着の過程を通して、彼らの「家族」のあり方や移住者の「安住」への模索を見ることが出来た。しかし、日本滞在の脱北者のほとんどは自分の出自を隠して生活する人が多いため、公表が難しい。インフォーマントのプライバシーの保護を優先することで、研究発表には時間を要する結果になる。

    50年代末以降の北朝鮮帰国運動により8万を越える在日コリアンが北朝鮮に集団渡航した。その結果、在日社会から多くの人材が流出すると同時に、故郷の親族から切り離されていた在日家族に新たな離散状況がもたらされた。本研究はそうした「帰国者」が在日社会で果たしていた役割を跡づけるとともに、帰国運動が生み出した在日家族の離散と交流の動向を実証的に明らかにしていくことを目指している。 本年度は、まず帰国運動の実態を少しでも明らかにするため当時の運動推進団体への取材を行い始めたが、国交回復や拉致問題などの余波で調査の中断を余儀なくされた。その代わり、最初の帰国者たちを受け入れた北朝鮮の担当責任者であった脱北者に会うことができ、当時喧伝されていた「地上の楽園」を北朝鮮は始めから用意するつもりがなかったことや、帰国者の到着直後からの扱われ方の実態に関して詳細に聞き取りをすることができた。 また、在日コリアンの戦後史の中に帰国者の姿を探るための作業も、少しずつだが資料の収集を進めることができた。同時に、本年度も帰国者を親族に持つ在日へのインタビューを重ねていったのだが、ここのところの北朝鮮をめぐる情勢の急変に伴い、よりいっそうの援助を北朝鮮の親族に送ろうとする人々と、身内に帰国者がいることをこれまで以上に隠そうとする人々とに、在日社会の両極分解が進んでいくのが、その過程で見て取れた。極東アジアの政治情勢は、帰国者と在日家族の間にまたもや新たな離散状況をもたらそうとしている。 さらに、脱北者と脱北帰国者へのインタビュー調査も昨年度に引き続き行うことができ、北朝鮮での暮らし向き、「故郷」に関する意識の在り方、自分の子どもたちが受ける教育をめぐる悩みなど、物心両面にわたって、脱北者と脱北帰国者との異同を比較しながら明らかにしていくことができた。

    The aims of this study is to research the existing ghost marriage and shamanism among the Korean in Japan. The fieldwork was basically conducted in Osaka (Ikoma), Hyogo (Takarazuka), Nagoya (Kasugai) and Tokyo (Arakawa) from July 1998 to February 1999. As a result it has been verified that the shaman-based marriage (ghost marriage) has been inherited from Peninsula to Japan by Korean emigrants to Japan.
