    Root and leaf traits are expected to converge on the plant economics spectrum (PES). Some studies have focused on correlation between specific root length (SRL) and specific leaf area (SLA), which reflect resource acquisition per invested mass in root and leaf, respectively. However, the results have been inconsistent among previous studies. We hypothesized that this discrepancy was due to overlooked variations in root traits depending on mycorrhizal types because SRL can be influenced by not only PES but also mycorrhizal types. To assess how mycorrhizal type inherently mediates the coordination of root and leaf traits, we determined the leaf and root traits of current-year seedlings of 33 species encompassing different leaf habits and mycorrhizal types, AM (arbuscular mycorrhizal) and ECM (ectomycorrhizal) species, grown under a common condition. Root and leaf traits correlated with the first axis of the principal component analysis, and this axis represented PES. Root diameter (RD) also correlated with the second axis, which differed between mycorrhizal types. SRL and SLA were correlated positively to each other, but ECM species had higher SRL than AM species when compared at the same SLA. This was because (1) SRL is negatively related to root tissue density (RTD) and RD, (2) RTD was negatively correlated with SLA, and (3) RD was smaller in ECM. Leaf and root traits are tightly coordinated with each other across species, but the relationship shifts between the mycorrhizal types.

    Abstract The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) is a normalized reflectance index that is expected to be useful for estimating photosynthetic activity based on remote-sensing images. Experimental and theoretical studies have examined how the PRI is related to photosynthesis, but they have been based on observations under steady-state light conditions. Photosynthetic systems display differential temporal responsiveness when exposed to variation in light intensity. Here, we examined the responses of the CO2 assimilation rate (A), quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (ФP), nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ), and the PRI in two poplar species, one being a hybrid that does not close stomata in the dark (nonclosing type). When dark-adapted leaves were exposed to strong light (induction phase), the response time was ФP = NPQ < PRI < A for the normal type and ФP = NPQ < PRI = A for the nonclosing type. Consequently, the PRI–NPQ and the PRI–A relationships differed between the steady-state and induction phase. On the other hand, when the light-adapted leaves were transferred from dark to light, the time response was similar among ФP, NPQ, and the PRI. Therefore, the PRI can be used to assess ФP and NPQ even under dynamic light conditions if light-adapted leaves are used. Our results imply that, following sudden increases in light intensity, CO2 assimilation in the normal type poplar is limited by stomatal conductance, and that PSII-related parameters, including the PRI, are temporally decoupled from A. Estimates of A based on the PRI would be overestimates under dynamic conditions, which needs to be taken into account when interpreting remote-sensing data.

    Tropical forests are primary global sources of isoprene, a reactive volatile organic compound (VOC) influencing atmospheric chemistry and climate. Southeast Asian tropical forests, characterized by the dominance of dipterocarp species, play a significant role in regional emissions. However, a mechanistic understanding of how these unique forest ecosystems regulate emissions remains limited due to a scarcity of species-specific isoprene emission data. This data gap is crucial as these distinct ecosystems face increasing threats from disturbances. Such disturbances can alter microenvironments, notably light environments, leading to shifts in species composition that potentially modify regional VOC fluxes and complicate emission predictions. To address this knowledge gap, we measured leaf-level isoprene emissions from 10 ecologically important tree saplings in a lowland dipterocarp forest (Pasoh Forest Reserve). Our selection prioritized species inhabiting diverse light environments to explore relationships between emission capacity, photosynthetic traits, and in situ light conditions. Only 2 light-demanding Macaranga species (M. gigantea and M. hypoleuca) at disturbed forest edges consistently emitted isoprene. The remaining 8 species, including 2 canopy-dominant dipterocarps (Shorea leprosula and Neobalanocarpus heimii), showed no detectable emissions, a finding may help explain the relatively low regional isoprene fluxes previously observed at this site. The identification of these Macaranga species as isoprene emitters is relevant given that disturbances often create favorable light environments for such pioneers. Our case study, using historical tree survey data from a fire-disturbed area, suggests that Macaranga dominance following such disturbances could transiently create hot spots of elevated isoprene emissions. This further implies the importance of species-specific emission data, particularly for ecologically dominant or disturbance-responsive pioneer species, in assessing how forest composition and its shifts influence regional isoprene fluxes and atmospheric chemistry.

    Since photosynthesis is highly sensitive to salinity stress, remote sensing of photosynthetic status is useful for detecting salinity stress during the selection and breeding of salinity-tolerant plants. To do so, photochemical reflectance index (PRI) is a potential measure to detect conversion of the xanthophyll cycle in photosystem II. Raphanus sativus var. raphanistroides is a wild radish species closely related to domesticated radish, and is distributed throughout the coastal regions of Japan, where it is thought to be salt tolerant. In this study, we raised wild and domesticated radishes under various salt conditions and assessed growth, photosynthetic status, and PRI. When grown at mild salt stress (50 mM NaCl), wild radish leaves showed photosynthetic activity levels comparable to control plants, whereas the photosynthetic activity of domesticated radish was suppressed. This result suggests that wild radishes are more salt-tolerant than domesticated radishes. Although photosynthetic rate and the photochemical quantum yield were significantly correlated with PRI in both species, the PRI resolution was insufficient to distinguish differences in salt tolerance between wild and domesticated radish. Wild radish had a lower maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) when grown under moderate salt stress (200 mM NaCl), suggesting chronic photoinhibition. The relationship between non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and PRI was significant when leaves with chronic photoinhibition were eliminated but this relationship was not significant when they were included. In contrast, the relationship between photosynthesis and PRI was significant regardless of whether leaves displayed chronic photoinhibition or not. We conclude that PRI is useful to detect relatively large reductions in photosynthetic rate under salinity stress, and that care should be taken to evaluate NPQ from PRI.

    It has long been held that tree species/leaves from shaded environments show faster rate of photosynthetic induction than species/leaves from sunlit environments. But the evidence so far is conflicting and the underlying mechanisms are still under debate. To address the debate, we compiled a dataset for 87 tree species and compared the initial increasing slope during the first 2-minute induction (SA) and stomatal and biochemical characteristics between sun and shade species from the same study, and those between sun and shade leaves within the same species. In 77% of between-species comparisons, the species with high steady-state photosynthetic rate in the high light (Af) exhibited a larger SA than the species with low Af. In 67% within-species comparisons, the sun leaves exhibited a larger SA than the shade leaves. However, in only a few instances did the sun species/leaves more rapidly achieve 50% of full induction, with an even smaller SA, than the shade species/leaves. At both the species and leaf level, SA increased with increasing initial stomatal conductance before induction (gsi). Despite exhibiting reduced intrinsic water use efficiency in low light, a large SA proportionally enhances photosynthetic carbon gain during the first 2-minute induction in the sun species and leaves. Thus, in terms of the increase in absolute rate of photosynthesis, tree species/leaves from sunlit environments display faster photosynthetic induction responses than those from shaded environments. Our results call for re-consideration of contrasting photosynthetic strategies in photosynthetic adaption/acclimation to dynamic light environments across species.

    It has long been debated whether tree leaves from shady environments exhibit higher photosynthetic induction efficiency (IE) than those from sunny environments and how the shade tolerance of tree species and the light environment of leaves contribute to the dynamics of photosynthesis. To address these questions, we investigated leaf photosynthetic responses to simulated changes of light intensity in seedlings of six tree species with differential shade tolerance. The seedlings were growing under different light environments in a lowland tropical forest. We proposed an index of relative shade tolerance (RST) to assess species-specific capacity to tolerate shade, and we quantified the light environment of individual leaves by the index of daily light integral (DLI), the averaged daily total light intensity. We obtained the following results. Photosynthetic IE, which is the ratio of the achieved carbon gain to the expected carbon gain, was significantly higher for species with a higher RST than for that with a lower RST. The impacts of light environment on the IE of individual leaves within the same species varied largely among different species. In the three species with relatively low RST, the IE of individual leaves decreased at higher DLIs when DLI < 10 mol m-2 d-1. Seedlings with high initial stomatal conductance before induction (gs50) possessed a higher IE than those with low gs50 from the same species. A trade-off existed between IE and steady-state photosynthetic rates. These results suggest a complex interaction between the shade tolerance of species and the light environments of individual leaves for photosynthetic induction and provide new insights into the adaptation strategy for understory seedlings under sunfleck environments.

    To clarify the effects of grazing on green herbage mass in Zoysia-dominated grassland, seasonal changes of green herbage mass over 15 years were related to variation in grazing practices. Several factors influencing green herbage mass during grazing periods were analyzed using a linear mixed-effects model. The results of this long-term study showed that the effect of grazing on green herbage mass varied with grazing procedures annually and with grazing history. The linear mixed-effects model determined quantitatively the effect of each factor on green herbage mass. With less than 1200 kg BW ha-1 of grazing pressure, green herbage mass decreased with increasing grazing pressure; it was negatively affected by plant diversity and season and positively affected by green herbage mass at the start of the grazing period. With more than 1200 kg BW ha-1 of grazing pressure, green herbage mass remained low regardless of grazing pressure; it was negatively affected by season and positively affected by green herbage mass at the start of the grazing period.

    In an effort to appropriately manage and preserve grasslands, the application of species–area curves using the randomized-order method was examined for species diversity measurements. First, surveyed orders were permuted using repeated random number generation and, on average, a typical species–area relationship was generated. A power function model was then fit to the curves and three diversity indices were compared: minimal area ( Aa), species richness (Sa), and the appearance pattern (z) resulting from the model. We investigated Zoysia–dominated pastures to test simulations using several treatments and to compare methods. The results indicated that the randomized-order method produced highly precise species–area curves and that the effects of survey and stand area on the curves and indices were minimal. This method offers an improvement over species–area relationships generated from surveyed orders and over other species diversity indices, and is thus useful for evaluating species diversity in grasslands.

    In semi-natural grassland, the vegetation changes seasonally and annually. Therefore, to examine problems related to long-term vegetation change, we must understand the influence of study season on the vegetation diagnosis. This study investigated the phenological characteristics of Miscanthus (M)- and Zoysia (Z)-dominated grasslands. We established twenty 100×100cm quadrats in each grassland. In each quadrat, we identified all of the species, determined coverage and maximum height for each species, and vegetation cover and canopy height in spring, summer, and autumn. We calculated species diversity indices and vegetation similarity for each season. In both M- and Z-grasslands, the extended summed dominance ratios (E-SDR_2) of the dominant species changed seasonally. The number of species and vegetation height increased with the season in M-grassland, but not in Z-grassland. The vegetation similarity among seasons was lower in M-grassland. Therefore, the seasonal change in vegetation in M-grassland was greater than in Z-grassland. By contrast, the Shannon index (H') and Simpson index (D) differed little among seasons in each grassland, suggesting that the diversity index can be used to evaluate the grassland condition with long-term vegetation succession.

    A factor that strongly influences the residual error (e_i) of the linear regression equation of top mass on the rising plate meter (RPM) value was detected using a partition analysis, and the points to be considered when we presume plant mass using the RPM were examined. We obtained the newly linear regression equation, and the influence level that the excluded factor gave the regression was verified by the comparison with former equation. The ratio of dead plant matter mass to the total above ground mass was the factor that most strongly influenced the et of the live mass ; therefore, study in early spring, when there is a high proportion of dead plant matter mass to the total mass, should be avoided for calibration. Furthermore, the RPM value dichotomized at 8.4. When the RPM value was less than 8.4, a highly accurate linear regression equation was obtained for the live mass. Conversely, when the RPM value exceeded 8.4, no usable linear regression equation was obtained for the live mass. The e_i of the total mass strongly depended on the e_i of the dead mass. It was difficult to identify factors influencing the e_i of the dead mass based on the variables examined in this study. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the measurement accuracy of dead plant parts to improve the total mass estimation using the RPM.

    A comparison of land use in the 1990s between the northern, central and southern regions of Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, was performed based on aerial photograph analysis. It was clarified that the northern region was a mountainous agricultural area whereas the southern region was a city area. The central region had a land use characteristic intermediate or somewhat close to that of the northern region. Compared with the vegetation map that was published by the local government of Ibaraki Prefecture in 1980, in the northern region the area of deciduous forest increased and the cultivated area decreased in the 1990s. In the central region, a tendency similar to that of the northern region was found between the 1980s and 1990s. On the other hand, in the southern region the area of deciduous forest had markedly decreased and the city area had greatly increased since 1980. In this region, changes not only in area but also area heterogeneity were found between the 1980s and 1990s, that is, large city area blocks had developed since the 1980s, and deciduous forest tended to have become more fragmented. These facts reveal the marked effect of changes in social and industrial (including agricultural) structure between the 1980s and 1990s on land use in these regions of Ibaraki Prefecture. To analyze land use in these regions, we used the beta-binomial distribution model. The present results indicate that this model is useful for analyzing substantial spatial and temporal changes in land use.

    Natural light environment has very heterogeneity of temporally and spatially. In this study, we investigated the effects of light irradiation pattern on plant functional traits during plants growth. We found that the individual growth rate and flowering period are promoted as the light irradiation interval is longer even if accumulated photon flux density a day is the same. We suggested that these effects of light irradiation patterns are also affected by the stomatal opening by cultivation experiments using mutants always stomata open.
