Numerous insect species exhibiting positive phototaxis are strongly attracted to ultraviolet (UV) light. However, several heteropteran stink bugs, including Nezara viridula (L.) and its congener Nezara antennata Scott, show stronger attraction to traps combining UV and green light than to monochromatic UV light traps. To examine the role of visible light wavelengths in enhancing UV attraction, we evaluated the attractiveness of blue (469 nm), green (523 nm), orange (613 nm), and red (632 nm) light in combination with UV light (396–400 nm), as well as a monochromatic UV light source, under field conditions targeting Nezara bugs. Traps combining UV and blue light captured nearly three times more Nezara bugs than UV-only light traps. Conversely, traps combining orange or red and UV light captured equal to or fewer bugs than monochromatic UV light traps, indicating no enhancement in attraction with these color combinations. Furthermore, monochromatic blue light alone showed very weak attractiveness, indicating that blue light synergistically enhanced the attractiveness of UV light to bugs. Strong attractiveness to traps combining UV and green light was confirmed in the lepidopteran moth Pleuroptya ruralis (Scopoli), suggesting that multiwavelength light sources may be effective in attracting insect species beyond Heteroptera. These findings highlight the value of multiwavelength light traps, particularly traps combining UV and blue light, for improving stink bug monitoring and pest management.

To estimate the damage risk and select control methods for the soybean pod borer, Leguminivora glycinivorella(Matsumura)(Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), over 200 soybean fields cultivated by farmers and treated with insecticides 0–2 times for the borer were surveyed in Niigata and Nagano Prefectures from 2015 to 2018. A decision tree analysis was performed on the non-treated data. The tree-model had four terminal nodes and was split by three factors: soybean continuous cropping year, damage rate in the previous year, and distance to the nearest field where soybeans were cropped in the previous year. The four terminal nodes were ordered from low to high according to the damage level of the fields classified to each node. The order of nodes did not differ between the modeling data and test data, which were data from other uncontrolled fields. As the number of insecticide treatments increased, the ratio of low-damage-level fields increased to >90% in all terminal nodes except the highest-damage-level node. These results indicate that the order of the four terminal nodes may represent the order of damage risk. The tree-model may enable rational selection of the number of insecticide treatments or rotation of soybean to rice before planting.

The aggregation pheromone (a mixture of three components) of Riptortus clavatus (Heteroptera : Pentatomidae) attracted nymphs and both sexes of adults of Piezodorus hybneri (Heteroptera : Alydidae). Large numbers of P hybneri were caught in a pheromone trap placed in a soybean field, compared with very few in a trap placed in grassland 120 m away from the soybean field, but equal numbers of R. clavatus were caught in both traps. Among three components of the pheromone. (E) -2-hexenyl (E) -2-hexanoate (E2HE2H) showed the attractiveness to P. hybneri. and its activity was almost equal to that of the aggregation pheromone. Since E2HE2H is the major component (ca. 71%) of the pheromone and the other components did not show attractiveness, we consider E2HE2H to be the component that attracted P hybneri. P hybneri seems to use this component of the pheromone of R. clavatus, which has a similar host range. as a kairomone to search for food plants.

We investigated the occurrence of Spodoptera litura and three major stink bugs, Riptortus clavatus, Piezodorus hybneri and Megacopta punctatissimum, on three soybean cultivars/line-Kyukei 279 (line resistant to S. litura selected through laboratory tests), Fukuyutaka (standard cultivar) and Himeshirazu (resistant to S. litura)-in a field in Kumamoto, Western Japan, in 2001. The density of S. litura larvae was significantly lower on Kyukei 279 and Himeshirazu than on Fukuyutaka. The number of leaves damaged by colonies of newly hatched larvae was also lower on Kyukei 279 than on Fukuyutaka, suggesting that fewer egg masses were laid on Kyukei 279, and thus that S. litura females had less oviposition preference for Kyukei 279 than for Fukuyutaka. These results indicate that Kyukei 279 shows intermediate resistance to S. litura under field conditions. The larval and adult densities of the three stink bug species and the rates of bean damage by the bugs did not differ among the three cultivars/line. This suggests that none of the cultivars/line have resistance to the stink bugs. However, Kyukei 279 and Himeshirazu may have the tolerance with a higher compensation capability for stink bug attack than Fukuyutaka, since they are characterized by many pods with small beans.

Insects gather around artificial light sources is a familiar phenomenon which thought to be based on positive-phototaxis. Three earlier hypotheses of insect phototaxis known as the compass, Mach band and open space theories, support a limited number of phototactic behavioural reactions of several specific species, but fall short in explaining all phototactic reactions. In this study, the trajectories and arrival points of several phototactic insects were observed precisely, and the results clearly showed that the insects always headed to the boundary between a light source and its black background. Contrary to the three earlier hypotheses, we revealed that insects are attracted by the visual edges of luminance, colour and polarization contrasts in the positive-phototaxis.
