    This study presents a new scaling law for evaluating the liquid film thickness of a Taylor bubble in capillary tubes. Numerous studies have investigated the estimation of the liquid film thickness and have expressed this thickness as a polynomial function of the capillary and Reynolds numbers. Herein, we assumed Reynolds number effects on enhancing viscous forces within the liquid film for accurately reproducing the film thickness compared with the conventional correlation and providing a clearer physical meaning. Moreover, the detailed inertial effects on Taylor bubbles were explored through numerical simulations. The liquid film thickness was calculated under turbulent conditions, revealing a correlation between the film thickness and turbulent viscosity. Correcting the capillary number with the turbulent viscosity unified the effects of inertia, viscosity, and surface tension on liquid film thickness. After modifying Taylor's law using the corrected capillary number and expressing the turbulent viscosity as a power function of Reynolds number, the inertia-induced increase in liquid film thickness was found to be represented by the original form of Taylor's law. The results of the modified model well matched the experimental results. Finally, the limiting effect of the velocity boundary layer on the liquid film thickness was investigated. Based on Prandtl's law, the transition Reynolds number at which the film thickness decreases was shown to be a function of the capillary number.

    Abstract To understand the generation process of airborne droplets during exhalation, this study investigates the mechanism of bimodal characteristics of the size distribution of droplets generated in a condensed spray flow. The phase change process in the condensed spray flow was estimated based on the droplet size distribution measured by a phase Doppler particle analyzer and the temperature distribution measured by a thermistor. On the central axis, the size distribution was unimodal in the spray interior. In contrast, bimodality of the size distribution at the outer edge of the spray flow was observed. At the edge of the spray flow, a large temperature gradient was formed. This indicates that condensation actively occurred at the outer edge. For the same reason as outlined above, condensation did not progress at the spray center because of the consumption of water vapor at the outer edge by the condensation, and the droplet diameter did not change significantly. Hence, owing to the difference in the local phase change process between the center and outer edge of the spray, large and small droplets can exist simultaneously in the middle region. As a result, the size distribution of the condensation spray is bimodal.

    Abstract The occurrence and growth of cavitation are suppressed in cryogenic fluids used as propellants for liquid rockets, and this phenomenon is called the thermodynamic suppression effect of cavitation. This effect is attributed to the temperature drop around the cavity caused by the latent heat of evaporation. Further, a method to suppress oscillation phenomena called cavitation instabilities by cutting off a part of the inducer blade (referred to as a slit inducer) has been proposed by the authors. Although the suitability effect was confirmed for suppressing the cavitation oscillation, there is a need to demonstrate that the slit does not inhibit the thermodynamic suppression effect of cavitation even when it is installed in the inducer of the liquid rocket turbopump. In this study, the thermodynamic suppression effect of cavitation is examined in an experiment with a NACA0009 hydrofoil with and without a slit in a hot-water cavitation tunnel as a preliminary step in the investigation of a slit inducer. The temperature drops and the distribution inside the cavity were measured by our direct temperature measurement method with unsteady temperature estimation method under T∞ = 90 °C to investigate the small difference in the thermodynamic suppression effect that does not appear in the cavity length. The expanded uncertainty of the temperature probe using thermistor is 17 mK. As a result, it was found that the cavity suppression amount in the region downstream of the slit inside the cavity increased under the condition of unsteady cavitation in the hydrofoil with a slit.

    Olfactory dysfunction is associated with aging and the earliest stages of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases; it is thought to be an early biomarker of cognitive decline. In marmosets, a small non-human primate model used in brain research, olfactory pathway activity during olfactory stimulation has not been well studied because of the difficulty in clearly switching olfactory stimuli inside a narrow MRI. Here, we developed an olfactory-stimulated fMRI system using a small-aperture MRI machine. The olfactory presentation system consisted of two tubes, one for supply and one for suction of olfactory stimulants and a balloon valve. A balloon valve installed in the air supply tube controlled the presentation of the olfactory stimulant, which enabled sharp olfactory stimulation within MRI, such as 30 s of stimulation repeated five times at five-minute intervals. The olfactory stimulation system was validated in vivo and in a simulated system. fMRI analysis showed a rapid increase in signal values within 30 s of olfactory stimulation in eight regions related to the sense of smell. As these regions include those associated with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, olfactory stimulation fMRI may be useful in clarifying the relationship between olfactory dysfunction and dementia in non-human primates.

    Abstract Despite the observation of change in the cavitation regime on a heated surface, the specific section of the wall surface that plays a more dominant role in this transition phenomenon remains unknown. This study experimentally investigated the effect of surface temperature of different regions on the cavitating flow in terms of the cavitation regime. The experiments were conducted using a convergent–divergent Venturi nozzle comprising two parts that could be heated independently. The Venturi nozzle could be fully or selectively heated at either the front, where the leading edge of the cavity sheet was located, or the rear, where the cavity sheet developed. The cavitation behavior under different heating conditions was investigated using high-speed visualization and fluctuating pressure measurements. Compared with the nonheated case, which exhibited sheet-cloud cavitation, the cavitation regime on the fully heated Venturi nozzle exhibited transient cavitation. The same transition phenomenon was also observed when only the front part of the Venturi nozzle was heated. In contrast, heating the rear part alone did not induce a change in the cavitation regime. Therefore, it appeared that the transition of the cavitation regime on a heated surface was mainly influenced by the temperature increase at the leading edge of the cavity sheet.

    Abstract An experimental study of cavitating flow on a heated NACA0015 hydrofoil was conducted in a cavitation tunnel to investigate the influence of the hydrofoil surface temperature on the cavitating flow. The cavitation behavior under different heating conditions was examined using high-speed video, and an image processing method was used to obtain the periodic characteristics of the cavitating flow. The results revealed that attached sheet cavitation and supercavitation occurred on both heated and unheated hydrofoils. However, sheet-cloud cavitation was observed only on the unheated hydrofoil, whereas transient cavitation was observed only on the heated hydrofoil. Transient cavitation also exhibited periodic growth/collapse behavior; however, there was no shedding of a large vapor cloud. Moreover, with a further increase in the hydrofoil surface temperature, transient cavitation turned into open-type cavitation. The cavitating flow exhibited a quasi-steady cavity length with an open cavity closure. It was considered that the surface temperature promoted vapor generation at the cavity leading edge, which enlarged the vapor-filled fore part of the sheet cavity. This enlarged sheet cavity prevented the reentrant flow from moving upstream and thus turned the cavity closure into an open type. Once the cavity closure turned into an open type, the local disturbance led to a smaller adverse pressure gradient, which was not sufficiently strong to create a reentrant flow. In this case, if the vapor generation at the cavity leading edge was sufficiently large to reach a balance with vapor condensation at the open cavity closure, the cavity would be steady.

    In our previous study, we successfully detected a difference in the effective thermal conductivity between an invasive melanoma lesion and healthy skin, through clinical experiments conducted on melanoma patients. We found that the effective thermal conductivity of the lesions correlated with the tumor thickness, suggesting that it may be correlated with the prognostic risk of melanoma. However, the bioheat transfer mechanisms of the correlation remained unknown. The aim of this study was to numerically investigate the effects of the bioheat transfer characteristics of malignant melanoma on thermal conductivity measurements and explore the cause of the difference in the effective thermal conductivity between lesions and healthy skin. We used two different bioheat transfer models, the Pennes model and local thermal nonequilibrium model, and investigated the cause of the aforementioned differences by varying the bioheat transfer parameters associated with the thermophysical properties and blood flow of a tumor. The calculation results indicated that the contribution of the blood flow can be dominant in a measurement comprising the use of a guard-heated thermistor probe.     <p>To evaluate the frictional heating effect during ski gliding by temperature measurement, a temperature measurement system was developed and evaluated numerically and experimentally. The portable temperature measurement system with high temperature resolution and accuracy consisted of thermistors and a portable logger with a 24-bit A–D convertor. The thermistors were inserted in a hole in the ski board with thermal conductive adhesive. By using numerical simulation, the difference between the interface temperature and the averaged temperature in the sensing region was evaluated. The temperature difference was proportional to the value of frictional heat generation, and the maximum difference in the experimental range in this study was 0.17 K. To test the developed system, a gliding experiment was conducted at Shinjo Cryospheric Environment Laboratory. Three thermistors were installed in the ski board, and a moving object was constructed on the ski. By pulling the moving object with a guide wire, the moving object was glided, and the interfacial temperature was recorded. In the case of a total weight of 54 kg, which was near the optimal weight, the thermistor installed near the heel position had a large increment of temperature. In addition, similar temperature increments were observed during the acceleration phase of the moving object. After the acceleration phase, the gradient of the temperature increment changed. It was inferred that the variation of gradient was affected by the variation of the force balance on the moving object. This suggests that the local contact condition and friction might be estimated through temperature measurement.</p>

    The objective of this work is to experimentally and numerically evaluate small-scale cryosurgery using an ultrafine cryoprobe. The outer diameter (OD) of the cryoprobe was 550 μm. The cooling performance of the cryoprobe was tested with a freezing experiment using hydrogel at 37 °C. As a result of 1 min of cooling, the surface temperature of the cryoprobe reached −35 °C and the radius of the frozen region was 2 mm. To evaluate the temperature distribution, a numerical simulation was conducted. The temperature distribution in the frozen region and the heat transfer coefficient was discussed.

    In order to develop the fish place around Okinotori-Shima, it has been required that the fertilization of ocean by the nutrient-rich deep seawater. In this proposal, the upwelling method by perpetual salt fountain has been investigated. When the upwelling pipe is moored at the bottom of the ocean, it has a possibility of gradient of the upwelling of pipe. In this study, to moor the upwelling pipe at Okinotori-Shima, the method which spread the streamline upwelling pipe by using container is proposed. To establish this method, the spreading condition of upwelling upwelling pipe was designed and the availability of spreading method of pipe using container was evaluated. The gradient of pipe was modeled with drag coefficient measured by drag force measurement experiment and the buoyancy of the buoy to moor the streamline upwelling pipe at the bottom of the ocean was calculated. And also, the experiment of spreading of the 25 m upwelling pipe was conducted and the spreading of the pipe and the movement of dropping of container were observed. Using this experimental result, dropping movement of container at Okinotori-shima was evaluated.

    A novel method for measurement of thermal conductivity of soft materials and liquids with the polyimide film by utilizing a point contact method has been developed to solve several problems when it was applied to soft materials and liquids. Numerical simulation was carried out to evaluate the effect of the polyimide film. In addition, water, agar, fat and muscle of pig were selected as soft materials and liquids and their thermal conductivity were measured. As a result, the repeatability of measurement was improved by using the polyimide film, but there were differences between determined and literature value of thermal conductivities. A method in this study has a possibility to measure the thermal conductivity of soft materials and liquids by application of sample calibration correcting the bias.

    &lt;p&gt;We have been developed a pulmonary circulatory assist device for pediatric patients to promote hemodynamics of Fontan circulation. In this study, in order to develop the cooling system for a pulmonary circulatory assist device by heat pipes, we examined heat transfer response of the device, and we also designed basically heat transfer system by using heat pipes. In the animal experimental model, hot spot of during device contraction was around 45 degree Celsius in the rigid support sheath area. Whereas, there were no thermal elevation in extra cardiac conduit. From the temperature difference between the maximum device temperature and the blood temperature, we considered to be selecting the sealed gas and the filling pressure for heat pipe design. In the future prospects, we are due to develop prototype cooling system by waste heat to the blood vessel with heat pipe.&lt;/p&gt;

    This research focused on the proposal of high-quality crystallization method for proteins by active control of protein mass transfer in liquid phase. Applying a special membrane which has micro-structured pores, a hindered diffusion field in the vicinity of membrane was experimentally visualized and the possibility of its active control was evaluated. Numerical simulation of transient diffusion field was also performed, and quantitative evaluation of mass diffusion process was done. Through the results from experiment and numerical simulations, the key factor for actively controlling protein mass transfer was evaluated.

    本研究では,気液界面近傍における二酸化炭素吸収分離過程の革新的促進化を目的としている.気液界面に生じるマランゴニ対流を利用したこれまでにない高吸収能を有する二酸化炭素吸収分離法の実現のため,二酸化炭素吸収過程を伝熱工学的かつ流体力学的見地から測定し,濃度場情報と流れ場情報の関連性を精緻に捉え評価する.研究二年目は,前年度に構築した高精度計測システムを用いて,三次元流れ場と二酸化炭素吸収による非定常濃度場の同時計測を行った.前年度に引き続き,吸収剤として水および第二級・三級アミン溶液を用い,アミン溶液の種類による違いを定性的に評価した.これらの可視化実験の結果を用いて,吸収開始からの各時刻における二酸化炭素吸収量を定量評価し,二酸化炭素吸収のための吸収剤の選定には,溶液の有する吸収能の他に,溶液の粘度や表面張力等の諸物性値も検討しなければならないことを示した.これは二酸化炭素吸収過程における流動場と濃度場の同時計測を行うことによって,はじめて定量的な評価が可能となったものである. また,吸収過程促進のキーとなる対流による物質輸送過程を定量的に評価するために,吸収界面におけるマランゴニ対流の影響も実験的に明らかにした.これまでは故意にマランゴニ対流を生じさせない条件下での実験を行い,吸収開始後にしばらくして生じ始める濃度差マランゴニ対流も自然対流の一部とみなして評価を行ってきたが,今年度は特殊な装置を用いて気液界面に温度勾配を生じさせ,温度差マランゴニ対流をパラメトリックに変えることで吸収量の評価を行った.その結果,マランゴニ対流は吸収量促進に影響は及ぼすものの,マランゴニ対流の生じる位置や向きによって吸収量が大きく異なることが明らかとなった.この関係性はまだ定量的には評価できていなく,次年度まで研究期間を延長して評価していくこととした.

    In this study, to develop the cooling mechanism for electronic devices with high power density and micro-refrigerator for medical applications, the expansion of vapor bubbles in the microchannel and the liquid film formation process was clarified and the mechanism of high heat flux cooling was investigated. To understand the liquid film formation by vapor bubbles in a microchannel, an appropriate condition of numerical simulation was considered and two-phase flow of FC-72 was analyzed. The results of the numerical analysis showed that (1) the film thickness near the head of the bubble was comparable to the existing empirical correlations, (2) when the superheat of the liquid phase is large, the migration speed of the bubble tip increases and the liquid film becomes thicker. As a result, the contribution of liquid film evaporation in overall heat transfer is reduced.

    (1)皮膚がん計測プローブの開発について:本研究期間では,熱伝導率定量測定プローブを用い,皮膚がんの熱伝導率の臨床測定を行った.臨床研究の結果,皮膚がんの進行度に応じて熱伝導率が変動することが明らかとなった.これまで数値解析実験から熱伝導率が皮膚がんの進行度に応じて変動することは明らかとなっていたが,本研究期間において臨床研究の観点から世界で初めて実証することができた.また本熱伝導率の変化は癌による新規血管形成に応じた皮膚がん付近の血液流量の変化によるものであることが示唆された.本研究の新規展開として,表皮皮膚がんの熱伝導率測定を可能にするダブル温度パルスが発振型測定プローブの設計案を考案し,今後の研究計画を新たに立案した. (2)レーザー加熱療法に関する研究について:本研究期間ではレーザー加熱療法における高温場領域が生体組織の光学物性で計測可能かを評価するために,数値解析を用いた数値解析実験を行った.解析では散乱係数,吸収係数を変化させ,これら物性値が温度場に与える影響を評価した.解析の結果,散乱係数および吸収係数を制御すれば1mm-2mm程度でレーザー加熱による高温部分を制御できることが明らかとなった.レーザー加熱療法に必要となる事項を考慮した実験システムを構築した.またレーザー加熱療法における内部温度分布の測定に必要な非接触温度場可視化システムの測定システムを構築しその有用性も評価した.

    To realize a high heat flux air cooling system for the electronics cooling, low temperature supersonic flow, which was generated by an adiabatic expansion, and micro-channel were applied to micro-heat exchanger. The boundary layer thickness, which is related with an amount of heat transfer, is decreasing with the downscale. At first, the flow field and heat transfer in the micronozzle which has the suitable shape for manufacturing were evaluated by numerical simulation. Furthermore, the heat sink with micronozzle was manufactured and its cooling performance was evaluated by experiment. The effectiveness of micronozzle was clarified by the comparing experiment with heat sink without micronozzle. The heat sink with micronozzle showed the cooling performance of 0.761MW/m2 in the condition of 0.3MPaG of inlet pressure and 80 degree C of heat transfer surface.

    The objectives of this study is to clarify the phase change thermal flow of vapor bubble in microchannel by numerical simulation. Additionally, to investigate the evaporation of liquid film on the solid surface, near-wall evaporation phenomena in convective boiling was evaluated by using contact line evaporation model. The numerical simulation of expansion process of vapor bubble in isothermal microchannel was conducted. By calculating the shape of liquid-vapor interface and heat flux distribution on the isothermal wall, the length of heat flux distribution was shorter than the length of vapor bubble. Additionally, the numerical simulation on convective boiling heat transfer with contact line evaporation model was also conducted. In a single bubble growth in convective boiling, the contributions of contact line evaporation and convective heat transfer were different in the front and back side of vapor bubble.

    Irradiation of near-infrared laser light to the gold nanorods (GNRs) induces the surface plasmon resonance heating. To develop a minimally invasive therapy for the metastatic lymph node (LN) of oral cancer, photothermal therapy by using the surface plasmon resonance heating was tested. In this study, we used MXH10/Mo/lpr mice whose LNs enlarged to about 10 mm in diameter as a model for LN metastasis. When the GNRs were injected into the metastatic LN of the mouse model, and then a near-infrared laser light were irradiated to the LN, anti-cancer effect was observed. However, burn of skin on the LN was induced by the irradiation of a near-infrared laser light. To overcome the side effect, we developed cooling system using circulation of cold water to suppress increasing temperature of the skin during the irradiation. Under the control of skin temperature by using this cooling system, burn of the skin after the laser irradiation was completely suppressed.

    To achieve an air cooling system high heat flux for the electronics cooling, the supersonic air flow with low temperature, which was generated by an adiabatic expansion, and micro-channel were applied to micro-heat exchanger. By using a microchannel, the boundary layer thickness decreases and convective heat transfer coefficient is improved. The density distributions of the supersonic air flow inside the micro-channel, which was impossible to measure by conventional technique, were visualized and measured by using phase-shifting interferometer. From the comparison between the results of experimental and calculated, the cooling performance was evaluated. Then, it was evaluated as 1.5 MW/m2 despite the sir cooling.

    In order to achieve highly sensitive and high-speed measurement, a novel interferometry system was developed. A novel phase-shifting Koester prism was developed to acquire the phase shifted data with high sampling rate. In order to build the interferometer in the wind tunnel, the large-size quasi common path interferometer was developed with the concave mirror and three dimensional quasi common path. Next, the forced convection field around heated cylinder was observed and the turbulent transition of the boundary layer was estimated by using the tripping wire. Finally, the developing of the thermal boundary layer on the flat plate was measured quantitatively. Furthermore, the velocity distribution in the boundary layer was estimated.

    In order to achieve the high heat flux cooling for the electrical devices, the theoretical analysis of phase change heat transfer in microchannel and the investigation of the cooling system were conducted. By using the relationship of the liquid film thickness foamed in the single bubble flow in the tube, the condition which only evaporation occurs in the tube was analyzed. By introducing the analytical solution of the equation on the onset of heterogeneous nucleate boiling, the dimensionless form of the proposed analysis was presented. Additionally, the solver for the two-phase flow in microchannel was developed by using VOF method. The temperature and velocity field of single bubble flow in microchannel was solved and its cooling performance was evaluated.

    The objective of this study is establishment of high efficient hydrogen production by quantum cavity effect of thermal radiation. Thermal radiation is resonated at microcavity in porous media and reforming reaction rate is improved by non-equilibrium state by resonated radiation. In order to develop well-controlled microstructure, colloid crystal template method and TiO2 wetting methods were compared. As a result, pore size control was achieved and suitable microstructures were developed with enough strength. Furthermore, steam-reforming experiments were conducted with developed microstructure.

    本年度は本研究の目的である極細クライオプローブを用いた微小凍結手術の実現のために1.極細クライオプローブの性能予測と設計手法の検討,2.実用化に向けた冷媒循環システムの開発と評価を行った.また,極細クライオプローブ内の相変化伝熱の基礎的知見を得るため,マイクロチャネル内の相変化伝熱の基礎理論の構築も行った. 1.極細クライオプローブの性能予測と設計手法の検討 本研究で考案された極細クライオプローブ内の冷媒の状態変化の計算プログラムを利用し,クライオプローブを構成する管の径および長さと冷媒の状態量の関係を導き,冷却性能の最適化を行った.また,3種類のクライオプローブを製作し,計算プログラムの妥当性を評価し,断熱状態でのクライオプローブ温度を予測できることを示した. 2.実用化に向けた冷媒循環システムの開発と評価 冷媒に利用した代替フロンの排出を抑えるため,冷媒を繰り返し利用できるシステムを構築し,極細クライオプローブへ応用した.このシステムの特徴は,ポンプなどの動力を利用することなく,液体窒素で冷却したタンクを凝縮器として用いた.また,凍結領域を制御するためのバルブの操作方法を新たに考案した. 3.マイクロチャネル内の相変化伝熱の基礎理論の構築 エネルギー保存則に基づき,マイクロチャネル内での気泡の膨張過程を理論的に計算した.その際に核沸騰開始条件との比較を行うことにより,核沸騰限界熱流束以上の熱流束下でも蒸発伝熱による冷却が可能なマイクロチャネル径が存在することを示した.
