    Abstract Bottom-up nanomaterials are attractive as constituents of molecular-scale devices. In particular, 1D coordination nanochains based on bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) complexes are promising candidates for molecular photonic wires, as they can deliver photogenerated excitons along their straight chain structure efficiently. Moreover, the coordination polymers can be dispersed in organic solvents. This feature allows the preparation of a thin film on an electrode surface, which can serve as an active layer of photoelectric conversion systems. Hybridization of multiple photoactive chromophores in single-molecular materials may enhance their photophysical properties. Porphyrins and dipyrrin–metal complexes are well-studied pigments that convert the absorbed light energy into photofunctions such as photoluminescence and photoelectric conversion. Here, by expanding the design of the coordination nanowires, we present the preparation of a 1D coordination polymer bearing 2 efficient photo-absorbing chromophores: bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) and porphyrinatozinc(II). The bulky substituents on the porphyrin units allow the coordination polymer to be exfoliated into single-molecular wires with a height of 2.5 ± 1.0 nm and a length of 1.8 ± 0.3 μm. The coordination polymer exhibited photoluminescence and photoelectric conversion properties derived from the electronic interaction between the 2 moieties. Therefore, the design flexibility of bottom-up coordination nanochains can enrich the photofunctionality and broaden their potential applications in molecular devices.

    Coupled motion is ubiquitous in Nature as it forms the base for the direction, amplification, propagation, and synchronization of movement. Herein, we present experimental proof for the coupling of the rocking motion of a dihydroanthracene stator moiety with the light-induced rotational movement of an overcrowded alkene-based molecular motor. The motor was desymmetrized, introducing two different alkyl substituents to the stator part of the molecular scaffold, resulting in the formation of two diastereomers with opposite axial chirality. The structure of the two isomers is determined with nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy NMR and single-crystal X-ray analysis. The desymmetrization enables the study of the coupled motion, that is, rotation and oscillation, by 1H NMR, findings that are further supported by density functional theory calculations. A new handle to regulate the rotational speed of the motor through functionalization in the bottom half was also introduced, as the thermal barrier for thermal helix inversion is found to be largely dependent on the alkyl substituents and its orientation toward the upper half of the motor scaffold. In addition to the commonly observed successive photochemical and thermal steps driving the rotation of the motor, we find that the motor undergoes photochemically driven rotation in three of the four steps of the rotation cycle. Hence, this result extends the scope of molecular motors capable of photon-only rotary behavior.

    DNAを用いて人工的に構築するナノスケールの機能性材料が近年注目を集めています。本研究では、光照射によって単一方向に回転する分子モーターを用いることでDNA鎖のトポロジーを制御し、準安定状態である超らせん構造を自在に作り出すことを目指します。人工分子と天然材料を複合する技術を確立するとともに、DNA超らせんをツールとして既存の技術では獲得できないDNA材料群を創出します。

    Combination of multiple photofunctional compounds can yield higher-performance molecular systems. In this research, a novel molecular machine was synthesized by hybridizing a metal complex that efficiently harvests light with a molecular motor that undergoes unidirectional rotational motion upon light irradiation. Then the photophysical properties of this molecular machine was evaluated in organic solvents and we noticed that excitation at the metal complex moiety induces an asymmetric electronic state and this state can contribute to the enhanced efficiency of the rotational motion of the motor. This work provides design guidelines for development of advanced molecular machines, particularly those integrating light harvesting and mechanical functions.

    今年度はジピリン金属錯体ナノワイヤの合成とその物性調査を行った。単核錯体の研究からジピリン亜鉛錯体は強い蛍光を示すなど興味深い光物性を持つことが知られており、今回は金属イオンとして亜鉛イオンを採用することでジピリンナノワイヤの光機能化を中心に研究を進めた。 分子ワイヤの調製すなわちジピリン金属錯体のポリマー化はジピリン架橋配位子の金属イオンへの配位により進行する。溶液中でこれらの原料を混合することで粉末状の生成物を得た。これを分散媒中で超音波処理し、平滑基板上に塗布することで原子間力顕微鏡観察を行った。観察された像と分子構造計算の結果から、調製した分子ワイヤは分子鎖一本一本に単離できることが確認された。さらに、ジピリン架橋配位子の構造を変化させることでそれに応じた分子ワイヤの太さの違いを大気下で観察するなど、分子デザインによりナノワイヤの構造を調整できることを見出している。 また、これらの分子構造に関する情報と紫外可視吸光分析や蛍光測定などの光物性測定結果を複合的に考察し、分子ワイヤの構造によって光機能性をコントロールできることを明らかにした。例えば、キラリティを組み込んだナノワイヤを合成することで円偏光特性の強度が単核錯体に比べて増強することを報告した。さらに、別の分子構造を採用したジピリンナノワイヤについては、分子ワイヤの発光効率を向上させることに成功している。加えて、光照射によって生成した励起子が分子鎖中を移動していることを明らかにした。この現象は一次元的な構造異方性を持つ分子ワイヤが光エネルギーを伝達することを示しており、光導波路としての利用が期待できる。
