    Abstract Unconventional magnetism is key to advancement in a variety of spintronic applications and thus needs to be explored in new materials. Here, we report the in-depth magnetic studies of noncentrosymmetric Nd3Te4 and findings support the existence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in addition to symmetric exchange interaction among the moments. The large magnetic irreversibility with negative magnetization in M(T) data and associated first-order magnetic transition in isothermal magnetization data suggest the competing interactions resulting in multiple magnetic phases. The gradual evolution of magnetic texture has been probed by changes in the magnetization entropy having interesting characteristics like the inverse magnetocaloric effect. Most importantly, we have probed the existing nontrivial magnetic phase under a low applied magnetic field by ac-χ(T, H) and dc magnetization (M − H) data, having the same critical field in both measurements. The existence of multiple magnetic phases which are interconnected through first-order field-induced magnetic phase transitions have been probed at low field. The transition from paramagnetic to field-induced state for larger applied fields follows a second-order.

    Magnetic and specific heat measurements of Ce5Pb3 compound with a Mn5Si3-type structure have been carried out. The magnetic susceptibility shows two peaks at 3.5 and 20.5 K due to the magnetic transitions. The paramagnetic Curie tempertature and the effective magnetic moment obtained from the magnetic susceptibility are -8.2 K and 2.6μB, respectively. These results indicate that 4 f electrons are localized in high temperatures and the ground state is antiferromagnetic. The electronic specific heat coefficient, γ, is about 120 mJ/Ce-mol K2, and the Debye temperature, θD, is estimated to be 150 K. From these results, it is concluded that Ce5Pb3 is an antiferromagnetic heavy-fermion compound. The Néel temperature TN of Ce5Pb3 compound is higher than that of other Ce-Pb compounds, which is related to the two kinds of Ce sites.

    Temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity of (Ce1-xLax)Pb2 compounds have been investigated in order to study the effect of substituting La for Ce in a heavy fermion system. The effective magnetic moment estimated from the Curie-Weiss law agrees with that of the theoretical trivalent Ce-ion and independent of the La concentration in high temperatures. The temperature dependence of the magnetic contribution to the electrical resistivity continuously changes from a dense to dilute Kondo regime with increasing La concentration. This behavior would be correlated to a reduction of the Kondo temperature by the substitution of La for Ce.

    In this review, on the basis of our recent theoretical and experimental studies, we discuss the magnetic and electrical properties of γ-phase and L10-type antiferromagnetic Mn alloys. The point we wish to stress is that the calculated electronic properties are consistent with the experimental magnetic and electrical resistivity data. Especially, the spin structures and the pseudo-gap at the Fermi level are closely correlated with the antiferromagnetic stability. Our mechanism of the exchange bias-field well describes the biasing properties under the conditions with various spin structures. From the practical viewpoint for spintronic devices, the magnetovolume and elastic properties are also discussed.

    磁性体が磁場を感じると伸縮する性質は「磁歪」と呼ばれる。大部分の磁性体が磁場印加方向に伸長して印加と垂直方向が収縮し(正の磁歪定数)、その結果全体として体積は保存される。しかしながら、中には磁場印加方向に収縮して垂直方向が伸長する磁性体もある(負の磁歪定数)。電子軌道の縮退がスピンー軌道相互作用によって分裂し、その分裂した軌道とフェルミ面との位置関係によって磁歪定数の符号が変わる、と古くから解釈されている。科学技術の進展により電子軌道の直接観測が可能になってきている。本研究課題では、3dの電子軌道を直接観測し、磁歪現象の電子論的解釈を根本的に見直すことを最終目標としている。 当初は組成によって磁歪定数が正から負に変わるFe-Ge系の試料合成ならびに磁歪評価を目的としていたが、超磁歪材料として知られているFe-Ga合金が希土類元素の一部置換による格子膨張がさらなる磁歪増大をもたらすという理論計算結果が報告されていることから、その実験的検証から研究を始めることとした。 Fe-Ga二元系合金において最大磁歪が報告されているFe82Ga18合金に1at.%の希土類元素(Y, La, Ce, Pr)を含むFeGa合金の試料合成を試みた。FeGa超磁歪材料は単結晶において磁歪に結晶異方性があることが知られており、配向試料を作製する目的で急冷凝固メルトスパンリボンの作製も行った。現時点においてバルク体とメルトスパンリボン薄帯の試料を作製し、組織観察、構造解析、磁化測定等の基本物性調査を行った。

    Recently, in the CoCrGaSi Hesler alloy system, an anomalous martensitic transformation (AMT), where the L10 martensite phase transforms again to L21 parent phase on cooling, have been found. Moreover, cooling-induced shape memory effect has first been reported by using the thermoelastic AMT. In this study, for the CoCrGaSi Hesler alloys, basic physical and superelastic properties were examined in order to clarify the origin of the abnormal phenomenon. Through this project, it has been suggested that its origin may be due to magnetic transformations in both the parent and martensite phases.

    Recently, some anomalies of martensitic transformations (MTs), such as strain glass in the NiTi alloy, thermal-transformation arrest phenomenon and heating-induced MT in NiCoMnIn alloys, have been found at very low temperatures. In this study, for the NiTi, NiCoMnIn, and CuAlMn alloys, basic physical and superelastic properties in the temperature region from 10 to 200 K were examined in order to clarify the origin and the universality of the abnormal properties. Through this project, the origins of them have almost been clarified and a candidate for superelastic materials, which can be operated at cryogenic temperatures, has been found in the CuAlMn alloy system.

    In this project, a rare-earth metal-free magnet is aimed to be developed in the Mn-Ga based alloy systems. Mn-Ga binary and Mn-Ga-X (X : Ni, Co, Cu)ternary phase diagrams have experimentally been determined in the beginning. It was found that the hcp phase suppressing appearance of the ferromagnetic D0_<22> phase exists at high temperatures in the wide composition range and that the situation is not improved by addition of the elements X. On the other hand, a Mn-Ga-Cu alloy showing a large coercivity of about 10kOe has been found.

  1. Phase Diagrams and Physical Properties of Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Heusler Alloys

    CIMTEC2016:5th International Conference Smart and Multifunctional Materials Structures & SystemsにてInvited lecture の講演者として候補に挙がったことで、 “Phase Diagrams and Physical Properties of Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Heusler Alloys” の題目にてアブストラクトを提出し、6月5日に講演を行うことが決定した。Ni-Mn-Z (Z = In, Sn, Sb)系合金にて発現する、マルテンサイト構造相変態は、ある特定の組成領域において磁気相転移も同時に生じることから、変態時に磁化や電気抵抗などの諸物性が大きく変化する。一般的な形状記憶合金は、温度と応力によって変態の制御が可能であるが、これらのメタ磁性形状記憶合金は、磁場も変態を制御しうる外場として加わることから、応用面においても注目されている。この、特異な相変態の起源を探るためには、強磁性母相と弱磁性マルテンサイト相の両相の性質を把握することが非常に重要である。本講演では、Ni-Mn-Sn系合金に注目し、幅広い組成領域で、メスバウワー、中性子回折、交流磁化測定等、様々な手法で詳細に磁気特性を調べた結果を紹介する。

  2. 機能性材料のドメイン構造解析と電歪・磁歪特性制御

    環境発電(エネルギーハーベスティング)技術は、身の回りの微少なエネルギーから電力を作り出す要素技術であり、なかでも、振動エネルギーをエネルギー源とする発電は「振動発電」と呼ばれ、有望な環境発電技術の一つである。振動のエネルギーを電力に変換する方法として、 圧電素子(電歪材料)を用いた発電、磁歪材料の逆磁歪効果を利用した発電などが挙げられる。本研究課題では、圧電素子としてBaTiO3、磁歪材料としてFe-Ga, およびNi-Co-Mn-In合金に着眼し、これらの材料の微視的な格子歪と磁気的・電気的ドメイン構造の関連性、そして微視的なドメイン壁の移動に起因する巨視的な電歪・磁歪効果の発現機構を解明し、微小な振動を電力エネルギーに最大限変換するための材料最適化の指針を確立することを目的としている。また、これらの材料の欠点を補うべく、コンポジット材の開発までをも視野に入れている。 BaTiO3は代表的な強誘電体材料であり、複雑な構造相変態に伴い自発分極の方向が異なることで電歪特性を発現するが、実際には秩序―無秩序型相転移も複雑に絡むことが知られ、相変態の起源は明らかにはされていない。Fe-Gaも磁歪材料として高いポテンシャルを有することが知られているが、外部応力下における磁区構造を詳細に調べ、さらなる特性向上のための組織制御が次なる課題とされている。Ni-Co-Mn-Inは応力によって相変態が誘起される際に非常に大きな磁化変化を示すことから、磁歪材料として高い機能を有していると考えられているものの、物質自体の歴史が浅く、磁歪材料としての研究がほとんどなされていない。 このような状況を踏まえ、この3種の候補物質の専門家に加えて、原理解明の鍵となる微細構造観察、電場・磁場印加中におけるドメイン壁の移動を直接観測するローレンツ顕微鏡観察の専門家、そしてドメイン構造やドメイン壁移動のシミュレーションを行う理論家が集結し、このような学際的組織のもと、本研究課題を遂行することは、学術的側面だけでなく、振動発電の技術発展という意味合いにおいて応用的にも非常に意義深い。国内における「振動発電」に関する研究は、電歪・磁歪材料そのものを研究する材料系、もしくは電力エネルギーを取り出すシステムを研究する機械系の各分野に留まるケースが多いように見受けられる。本研究課題では、電歪・磁歪効果発現の原理究明を第一と考え、その目的遂行のために微細構造解析、ドメイン磁壁の直接観測、という最先端の技術を取り入れるべく組織を構築し、さらに理論による検討を加える、という点で非常に独自性が高い。廃エネルギーを有用な電気エネルギーに変換する技術は地球規模における全世界共通の課題である。学理に立脚した本研究課題を遂行することで、エネルギー問題解決の一助に繋がることが、最大の研究目的である。

    高度情報化社会に向けて高速・大容量・低消費電力デバイスの開発が強く望まれており、スピントロニクスという分野では実用温度で安定な高スピン偏極材料の発見が待たれています。本研究では、今までにない合金系でその新規高スピン偏極材料の探索を行うと同時に、物質の原子配列を制御し、理想的な電子状態を有限温度においていかに実現させるかに着目し、材料の性能を最大限に引き出す革新的なデバイスの創製を目指します。
