    Abstract Deviation from the spherical electron distribution of atoms in liquid cyclohexane has been determined through the difference interference term between the observed x-ray intermolecular interference term and the sum of the intermolecular partial structure factors weighted by x-ray atomic scattering factors. The difference distribution function indicates a broadened negative peak at r ∼ 3.7 Å, suggesting that the electron density decreases in the radial distance that corresponds to the intermolecular distances of neighboring cyclohexane molecules.

    Abstract Phonon dynamics in organic–inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) exhibit inherent complexity driven by the intricate interactions between rotatable organic cations and dynamically disordered inorganic octahedra, mediated by hydrogen bonding. This study aims to address this complexity by investigating the thermal transport behavior of MAPbCl3 as a gateway to the OIHPs family. The results reveal that the ultralow thermal conductivity of MAPbCl3 arises from a synergistic interplay of exceptionally low phonon velocities, short phonon lifetimes, and phonon mean free paths approaching the Regel‐Ioffe limit. Additionally, the thermal conductivity of MAPbCl3 approaches its theoretical amorphous limit across a broad temperature range, with its thermal transport behavior transitioning from crystal‐like to more liquid‐like during the orthorhombic‐to‐cubic phase transitions. Furthermore, a phonon drag effect is observed at 17 K, with Umklapp scattering serving as the predominant phonon resistive mechanism in the orthorhombic phase. In contrast, dynamic lattice distortions caused by the jumping rotation of MA+ cations become the primary factors influencing thermal transport in the cubic phase.

    Abstract Pyrochlore magnets have attracted interest as systems for realizing critical phenomena, rich magnetic structures, associated topological band structures, and nontrivial quantum phases. Na3Co(CO3)2Cl is a pseudospin-1/2 antiferromagnet in which the Co2+ ions form a pyrochlore network. Its structural and magnetic properties were investigated using magnetization, heat capacity, ESR, single-crystal x-ray diffraction, powder neutron diffraction and powder inelastic neutron scattering. Magnetization and heat capacity measurements indicated a ground-state doublet, which is regarded as pseudospin 1/2, dominated the magnetic properties at low temperatures, with a magnetic exchange of 9.6 K. As the temperature decreases, a magnetic transition is observed at 1.6 K, which is confirmed to be an all-in-all-out magnetic order. The crystal field excitations observed by inelastic neutron scattering experiments indicated the Ising nature of the ground-state doublet. This thorough study revealed that Na3Co(CO3)2Cl can be regarded as a pseudospin-1/2 pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet with dominant Ising-type interactions.

    Abstract A polymorph of Cu2OSeO3 with the distorted kagome lattice is successfully obtained using the high‐pressure synthesis technique (Cu2OSeO3‐HP). The structural analysis using X‐ray and neutron powder diffraction suggests that the tetrahedral Cu2+ clusters [similar to those in Cu2OSeO3 ambient‐pressure phase (Cu2OSeO3‐AP)] exist in Cu2OSeO3‐HP but with three symmetry inequivalent sites. No structural change is observed between 1.5 K and the room temperature. The complex magnetic H‐T phase diagram is established based on the temperature‐ and field‐dependent magnetization data, indicating two distinct antiferromagnetic phases at low and intermediate temperatures, in addition to the higher‐temperature spin‐glass‐like phase. The low temperature phase is identified by neutron powder diffraction refinements as a canted noncollinear antiferromagnetic order with a weak ferromagnetic component along the b‐axis. Size of the refined ordered moment is ≈1.00(4) µB in Cu2OSeO3‐HP, indicating a large enhancement compared to that of Cu2OSeO3‐AP (≈0.61 µB). By applying a uniaxial stress, finite enhancement of weak ferromagnetic component in the noncollinear antiferromagnetic phase in Cu2OSeO3‐HP is observed, which is the clear evidence of the piezomagnetic effect. Interestingly, the sign of the induced magnetization changes on heating from the low‐temperature to the intermediate‐temperature phases, indicating a novel piezomagnetic switching effect in this compound.

    Abstract The microscopic structure of 10 mol% NaFSA [FSA: bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide]-propylene carbonate (PC) solution has been investigated by means of X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques. The solvation structure of Na+ has been determined from least-squares fitting analysis of X-ray intermolecular difference interference terms observed for 10 mol% NaFSA-PC solution and pure liquid PC. In the present solution, onaverage, 6(1) PC molecules are involved in the first solvation shell of Na+ with intermolecular distance rNaO = 2.26(7) Å, and bond angle ∠Na+…O = C = 169(9)°. Intermolecular correlation between neighboring PC molecules in the solution has been derived from simultaneous least-squares fitting analysis of observed H–H, H–X, and X–X (X: atoms except for H) intermolecular partial structure factors determined from neutron diffraction data for H/D isotopically-substituted sample solutions. An indication of anti-parallel configuration of the nearest neighbor PC molecules has been suggested.

    Abstract A magnetic order of the quasicrystal approximant Au70Al16Tb14 was investigated via single crystalline neutron diffraction experiments. In spite of some differences in the macroscopic magnetic properties compared with Au72Al14Tb14, the whirling antiferromagnetic structure similar to Au72Al14Tb14 was found. The robustness of the magnetic structure suggests the orientation of the magnetic moment dominated by easy-axis anisotropy of Tb. In addition, the critical exponent β indicates a mean field nature of the magnetic transition.
